Title: "Your" Championship teams during your lifetime
Post by: HouWarrior on July 31, 2018, 05:10:37 PM
My fan life began quickly and successfully, but has included decades in the desert, too. How about you?

When I was young I thought celebrating championships of my local teams was going to be a frequent joy.
By age 21 I already had celebrated 5 championships of "my" teams:

Packers:
1965, 1966, 1967
Bucks:
1971
Marquette BB:
1977

Then the drought....from spring 1977 to spring 2017....the next 40 years of my life....I had only 2 more championships:

Rockets:
1994,1995

When the Rockets won in 95, my then 8 yr old nephew thought I was weird for telling him to cherish the specialness of the moment, as they occur so infrequently...well ...over 23 years later ....my now 31 year old nephew cried with me  as we watched  the Astros clinch their first WS championship ever....in fall of 2017

62 years.... only 8 championships...of my teams....how many do you have??
How long are your droughts?

BTW, For me, Non-Qualifiers...

I do not include the Pack in 96 or 10, as although I was still a fan and shareholder, I was no longer local to WI and I also rooted for local Texans...

I cant bring myself to bootstrap in here 4 Houston Comets WNBA titles, or the Houston Dynamo's MLS crown...I never followed either team...

and my near misses....NCAA final 4 (UH-82,83,84) (MU -03), WS (Twins 65)(Astros-05), NBA finals(Rockets-81 86) and Super Bowl appearances(Texans-0)....without winning...are not championships

Cubs - 2016
Bulls - 91, 92, 93, 96, 97, 98
Packers - 97, 11
Blackhawks - 10, 13, 17

In order of importance.

Waiting on Marquette, you got about 51 years left until I pass at the ripe, perfect age of 83.

I’m a Boston sports fan born in 1995. Winning 10 championships in a 16 year span (2001-2017) with at least one in every major sport is pretty ridiculous

Born in 1989
Packers in 1997
Packers in 2011

I'm a Red Wings fan so the 4 stanley cups were cool but hockey is easily the Big 4 sport I care about the least. I couldn't even tell you what years they won it but I'm pretty sure the two Packer super bowls bookend them.

Born '83:

Orioles (83)
Skins SB (83)
Skins SB (88)
Skins SB (92)

Unfortunately all of the titles got front-loaded in my early childhood. I have but one memory of watching the Skins beat Buffalo in the '92 Super Bowl. A team of mine might win another title some day, but given the state of DC sports (I'm not much of a Caps fan) and Marquette hoops, that day won't be soon.

As an impressionable kid, I glommed on to winners, so I had a couple right out of the chute: 1972 and 1973 Dolphins and 1972-73 Knicks.

I was a Yankees fan when they won in 1977 and 1978 but had stopped rooting for any professional teams due to my occupation long before they won it again in 1996.

Near misses for the 1984 Dolphins and the 2015 Panthers.

I wasn't a diehard Marquette fan until the year after they won the title. I was a senior in high school the following year, and about a month after I decided to attend, they effen lost to Effen Miami of Effen Ohio ... and I caught shyte from my friends for months!

In reality, my biggest championships were those I got to participate in: the two conference titles for the middle school hoops team I coached (there was no state title or national title, so the conference titles were as far as I could go, and they were the first two in school history), and the two league championships for the softball team I played on. Yep ... whup-de-doo on both ... but those coaching and softball titles were incredibly exhilarating and fun.

The year we went on to win the first basketball title was the year the Panthers went to the Super Bowl. That December, my son asked me, "If you could only have one, would you choose your basketball team winning the title or the Panthers winning the Super Bowl?"

It was an easy choice. As much as I like the Panthers, and even say "we" when I talk about them, I'm not part of the Panthers and I don't mean squat to them. I put a lot of work, sweat and tears into the team I coached; we were a family; I loved those kids. Total no-brainer.

I'd choose Marquette over the Panthers, too. I was (and still am) a Warrior!

I can’t imagine a Packers/Brewers fan being a Bulls fan. Or Packers/Bucks fan being a Cubs fan.

Only the Packers for me.

Marquette would be the one I would want most by far, then another Packers SB, then Bucks, then Brewers.

1984 Tigers.
The Pistons Bad Boys.
The Russian 5 Red Wings.

Just celebrated a 19-2 season and a district championship with my son's little league team that I coached.    All got together for pizza and a celebration of a magical season.    3 years ago, the core of this team was getting mercied every single game.    Good kids and hard work. A team with no drama, no superstars, just a bunch of good players who put the ball in play, ran the bases with reckless abandon, threw strikes and caught the ball.   A coach's dream.

So this one will always be on my championship team list.

The younger half of my dads siblings were raised in Elkhown, WI not south side of Chicago so most my cousins and aunts and uncles were all excited and I got caught up in it being a 6yr old. Then they went to the Super Bowl the following year again and it was sealed.

That being said I care about football the least of any sport I follow and that includes non big 4 sports as well

Born in  the 1950s

Packers:  1961, 1962, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1996, 2010 Near misses in 1997.

Cardinals  1964, 1967, 1982, 2008, 2011; Near misses in 1968, 1985, 1987, 2004 (sort of), 2013.

Marquette 1977. Near misses in 1974 and 2003.

I'm a Bears season ticket holder and have seen one Super Bowl team since I obtained tickets in 1995. I've been going long enough to remember the 1985 Bears, but I was not a season ticket holder then.

P.S. -- 1985 did not turn out the way we hoped but that home run by Ozzie was something special.

I grew up in Rockford in the 70's. We were able to get WGN on tv so I watched the Cubs starting when I was about 6-7.  My uncle was a Packers fan and brainwashed me.  Neither the Packers nor the Bears were any good at that time so it didn't really matter...until 1985, which was my worst year of high school.  That freaking Super Bowl shuffle every freaking time you turned on the radio!!  Bear fans coming out of the woodwork!! Insufferable!

This is complicated.  As a kid, I lived in Connecticut, so I was big Red Sox and UConn fan.  My mom was from Wisconsin so she raised me a Packer fan though.   I moved to Illinois in 2000, but I count the early 2000s wins for the Red Sox and Huskies as mine.  Once I started at MU in 2007, I switched college allegiances (duh) but also got really into the Brewers and Bucks.  I also sorta cheer for the Blackhawks, but I only follow hockey in playoffs and I just bandwagon.

So here’s my list

Packers 1996 and 2011
Red Sox 2004 and 2007 (and only sorta 2013)
UConn 1999 and 2004 (but not 2009 or 2011)

Great topic for the off season! Born in 1983

Michigan Basketball - 1989 (the team that made me fall in love with the game of basketball)
Michigan Football - 1997
Packers - 1996 & 2010

Near misses: Fab 5 teams, Packers '97

The Packer ones were extra special for me as I had lost my grandmother way too young to cancer in December of '96, and then lost my younger sister to suicide January of '11.  Those victories were a welcome reason to celebrate and a very nice break from reality.

Order now of who I want to see win next, MU, Brewers, Bucks, Packers, Michigan Football

It's been surprising to see how many people on here have favorite teams each from a variety of cities and how many adopted a team now considered to be their "own" based on where they moved. Not saying it's good, bad or otherwise (although, there are clearly some bandwagoners on here  ;)).

My family is from Illinois, mostly the Chicago area so I have always cheered for Chicago teams. Admittedly, if MU had won a title prior to 1998, I wouldn't count it either since I wasn't a fan before becoming a student. Having lived in Milwaukee for basically 20 years, I've become fond of the Bucks but would never count a Bucks championship as one of "my team's" championships. I'd probably root for the Brewers as well if they were still in the AL (i.e. fans wouldn't have the obnoxious hatred of all things Cubs) but I could NEVER root for the Packers.

Packers Two SB wins

Have to add the '82 Brewers were as much fun as I ever had watching a team. The last six weeks of the season postseason were a blast. I was a perfect age, 21y MU student, with ZERO responsibilities. I lived every minute of that run. Only wish they had won it all.

I love how many fans there are here of the '94 and '95 Rockets.  I count those two in my championship teams along with the  '91, '92, '09, '16 and '17 Penguins (though I was really young for the Lemieux championship years.

I've got a random assortment of of teams - Dolphins, Brewers, Rockets (though Bucks are probably right there too - I'm a crappy NBA fan) Penguins.

To echo Goose's point on the '82 Brewers, I had more fun with the 2011 Brewers than probably any of the championship teams.

1973 - Notre Dame (sorry...)
1977 - Marquette (although truth be told, MU wasn't even on my radar at this point)
1977 - Notre Dame
1985 - KC Royals
1988 - Notre Dame
1998 - Denver Broncos
1999 - Denver Broncos
2015 - KC Royals (still sentimental even though I've been more of an Indians fan since moving here in 1991)
2016 - Denver Broncos
2016 - Cleveland Cavaliers

My first was technically Marquette's 1977 win, though I was only 35 days old at the time. Ordered by how they mattered to me at the time.

Chicago Cubs: 2016
Chicago Blackhawks: 2010, 2013, 2015
Chicago Bulls: 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998
Arrowhead HS Football: 1993, 1994, 1996, 2007, 2012, 2013
Chicago Bears: 1985
USA Soccer (Gold Cup): 1991, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2013, 2017
Marquette Basketball: 1977

There are two that I hope to see in my lifetime. Marquette basketball winning another title and USA Soccer winning the World Cup. I figured I would never get the Cubs, so that one was the most special. The run by the Bulls was amazing and as a teenager at the time, I don't think I fully appreciated how amazing it was. The Blackhawks ones were really special too because there were a lot of lean years between when I started cheering for them in the early 1990s and when they finally won it.

Bulls - 91, 92, 93, 96, 97, 98
Packers - 97, 11
Blackhawks - 10, 13, 17

One of these is not like the other three. If this was an ACT test, I'd pick C.

I stopped caring about what my high school did in sports the day I left the place.

Regardless there are a few minor ones, but the only ones that I truly care about and remember are the Packers and the Warriors.

Out of curiosity why is that? Did you spend extensively more time at MU than HS? Is it because society frowns on those who still are fans of their HS? Just curious as while I don't care nearly as much as MU I still try to make the OPRF vs Fenwick basketball game annually and support my alma mater.

MU: 1970 NIT and 1977 NCAA
Mets: 1969, 1986
Jets: 1969
Giants: 1956, 1986, 1991 and 2008
Knicks: 1x
Rangers: 2x

I guess I could have thrown in the Islanders and Devils, but have been a New York fan most of my life. I root for the Mets and Jets except when they play the Yanks or the Giants respectively.

This is like saying "Next to Marquette my favorite college basketball team is the Badgers."

I think a lot of things make a person care more about their college than your HS.

You personally have a lot more input, if not all the input, on where you are going to college, where as HS you have little to none.
In the real world people ask what college you went to, re-enforcing that connection
College Sports makes it much easier to stay connected to your University if you move away, especially areas with alumni groups.
On your resume you are not listing HS classes, GPA, and achievements

I'm not saying having a connection to your HS is a bad thing and you shouldn't go back, there are just more permanent connections to your college and if you don't move back to your hometown there are very few connections to your HS.

It's been surprising to see how many people on here have favorite teams each from a variety of cities and how many adopted a team now considered to be their "own" based on where they moved. Not saying it's good, bad or otherwise (although, there are clearly some bandwagoners on here  ;)).

My picking of teams weren't based too much on geography.
I grew up in southwestern CT which is mostly NY but some Boston in terms of fandom.  I decided on the Red Sox as a 7 year old (despite my Dad and both older brothers being Yankees fans) and the Jets (my Dad was a Lions fan and my brothers are Browns and Cowboys fans) and the Lakers (Dad didn't follow basketball and my brothers were Lakers fans).  I have stuck with those teams since 1969 or so except I gave up on the Lakers because there was something about rooting for Kobe Bryant I couldn't abide.  When Shaq joined Wade in Miami I just naturally found myself rooting for them.  Now I don't really have an NBA team but hope for the best for the Marquette guys.  I wouldn't call an NBA champion "mine" anymore.

My son's sense of humor as a little 5 year old kid was to get my goat so he liked to root against my teams because he thought it was funny.  The Indians were playing the Red Sox in the ALDS around then so he started rooting for the Indians and the Broncos played the Jets in the AFC championship around the same time.  To his credit he has stuck with those teams and he is now in his 20s.  He likes basketball, but doesn't have a favorite team, though he roots for Marquette despite going to college elsewhere.

Marquette - 1977
White Sox - 2005
Bears - 1985 (wasn't a Bear's fan when they won in 1963)
Bulls and Blackhawks whenever

In order of importance.

same, but I can't include MU though I loved that team.  I was a (erp) DePaul fan in the late 70's.

Almost foorgot:  plus the Cardinals in '82 (over the Harvey's Wallbangers) and '85

I certainly fall into this category.

I grew up in SW Colorado, so I was a Broncos fan.  At the time, there was no baseball team in Colorado, so I was technically "teamless."  But, I was a huge baseball fan.  In the late 70s I had a paper route where I delivered papers in the local hospital.  One of the nurses was from KC, and was a huge Royals fan.  Every day we'd look at the Royals box score and it just stuck with me.  I didn't really care much about basketball at the time, so never cared about the Nuggets.

Then I went to Marquette and became a basketball fan.  After Marquette, I moved to Cleveland, and I've been here 27 years.  In that time, I've pretty much adopted the local teams, but still have sentimental affection for my childhood favorites.

For obvious reasons, football has presented a bit of a special case.  I was starting to warm up to the Browns...and then they left.  The first two Broncos championships happened right around that time.  Then, after the Browns returned, I started to warm up to them again.  I don't remember the year (looking at historical schedules, probably 2006 or 2008) but during one game between the Browns and Broncos I realized that I was rooting for the Browns.  I surprised myself.  But, it's been really hard to root for the Browns lately (although I do), so I'm still holding on to the Broncos.  If that makes me a bandwagoner...well, I guess I'm guilty as charged.

I think its easier now to stay a fan after you move, what with national broadcasts and everything streaming online, but theres just something about being around other fans of your team that helps.  I was a huge Red Sox fan as a kid and in my teens, but the longer I spent out of New England, the more attached I grew to the teams I got to see everyday and the more distant I became from the teams I cheered for as a kid.

Kids these days though have minimal "regional" loyalty.  I am amazed by how few kids (and adults) where I teach cheer for the local teams.  There's a good Chicago influence in Racine so there are Bulls and Cubs fans to go with the Packer, Brewer, and Bucks fans, but there are a ton of kids whose favorites are the Falcons or Cowboys or Warriors.  It's mostly the big name teams that are on national tv a lot or those that get a lot of play on social media, but its still surprising.  The most common excuse I hear is "they were good when I started watching, so they became my team."

PS...forgot one on my list earlier: 2000 Hartford Wolf Pack Calder Cup.  Those were my guys.  Game 1 of the championship series is up there with seeing the Brewers clinch (twice) and a Packer playoff game for my favorite in person sports memories.

Class of 1995. The first two state titles were my junior and senior years. I don't get back often, so when I do, I'm amazed how that campus has grown. We always had the student base but now the facilities really do look like a small college.

I know being a Cardinal nauseates people (too bad), but it happened because I grew up in Tennessee in an era before the Braves moved to Atlanta. The Cardinals were  up and down in the 1960s and the players were interesting people to follow and learn about. After the Braves left Milwaukee, there was no way I could ever be a Braves fan. Ever.

I've been to Atlanta many times but only been to a Braves game once -- in 1982. What the Braves did to Milwaukee was disgusting. And, as for being a Cub fan, like my Dad, NO WAY NO HOW! NO! Never, ever, never.

The rest -- the Packers and Marquette -- happened because my family is from Wisconsin. My father liked the Packers probably because they were a link to home and Marquette occurred because my Dad was an MU Engineering grad. When Marquette was on television in the 1960s and early 1970s, nothing else happened. Heck, the TV was even left on during dinner a few times if Marquette was on while dinner was being served (to the chagrin of my Mom). My Dad, my brothers and I or my Dad and Mom would travel to Marquette games when they were nearby. That's how that happened, long before I ever got to Marquette.

Brother Bagpiping Hurler, I don't think that's true. While I'll acknowledge it's kinda weird, school districts spend inordinate amounts of tax dollars so that a community can show its superiority over its neighbors by being able to more freely control a small piece of oblong shaped leather across a large grass field.

It's as if we're better than you and we can prove it because our football team beat you last week.

Go to Texas. They spend $100 million on high school football stadiums and equip them with skyboxes. Yeup, that's high school. Obscene.

In the community in which I grew up, I went to the only Roman Catholic High School in an overwhelmingly Protestant city. In those days, consistently whipping Protestant a*s on a football field was a mark of courage, of religious superiority and living proof that God herself really, really, really is Catholic. Every Catholic in town was duty bound under the threat of Mortal Sin and eternal damnation to attend our Friday night football games. They sort of did! At one point, our high school was so good we were playing in college stadiums and drawing 20,000 to 30,000 persons, some of whom may even have gone to heaven!

Of course, the day I set foot on the Marquette campus, I stopped caring one iota about my high school. Haven't cared since about its athletic teams. Two of my classmates are coaches there and I want them to do well, but that's their world, not mine.

I went to the same high school as Brother dgies. It has a pretty high percentage of folks (especially guys) who still follow their sports teams closely, but not alums wiho went to colleges with high D1 sports programs.  At our school, probably about 10 percent went to the University of Tennessee and half or more went to mid or low majors (Middle Tennessee, Tennessee Tech, Western Kentucky, etc.). This one spurred a fun memory.  Back in 1989, I had a client, Guardian Industries, a glass manufacturer based in Detroit, that was owned by Bill Davidson, who also happened to own the Pistons and controlled the newly built Palace at Auburn Hills (I think he also owned the NHL Tampa Bay Lightning).

They flew me in from Houston for a visit, including a personal tour of a glass plant and of The Palace, with the Guardian CFO.  The Palace was new and had many state of art innovations...a very interesting visit. We concluded by relaxing  in the empty stands...and wow...the Pistons were beginning a practice prior to the Boston series.  Suddenly a whistle blows....everything stops...Chuck Daly called a guy over, whispered, and the guy hiked up to where we sat.  He says Coach Daly is fearful we might be Celtic spies.  We assuaged the concern, and I got a Daly smile and wave out of it.  The Bad Boys were special.

I forgot, my "real" favorite championships were my daughter winning three state championships in soccer and my son winning one in hockey. My son's was the school's first championship playing against all schools in the state. They had won a couple prior in private school division. Even better was a school of 250 beating three schools at state with over 2k in student body.

Everyone in Detroit was so jacked up for a Tigers/Cubs series. In fact, there was a "what if World Series" that aired on the radio a few months laster.  The Tigers and Cubs announcers alternated calling this fictional game 7 which the Tigers won on a walk-off.

Yes, Davidson also owned the Lighting (which is how Yzerman ended up the GM there).  Davidson and two others built the Palace with private funds - $90 million at the time. Probably one of the last NBA arenas to be completely privately funded.

Not that I have memory of all of this although I do certainly remember the Ice Bowl.

Packers:  1961, 1962, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1996, 2010

Bears: 1985 (Moved to Chicago in 1984 and they became my 'second' team.)

Bucks: 1971

Bulls: 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998  (I probably still cheer for the Bulls more than the Bucks.)

Hawks: 2010, 2013, 2015

Marquette: 1977

Sox: 2005 (Yeah, I actively cheered for them but would never over the Crew)

Cubs: I didn't cheer against them and was happy for all my friends but no, I can't claim that.

And one more:  The 1977 Thomas More Cavaliers football team.  Magical night at Titan Stadium.  When you're a teen and absolutely know you're the best it's pretty special.  Milwaukee Boys Tech?  We warmed up against those clowns in non-con earlier in the year like they were a November basketball buy game.  As to HS after one graduates, I agree with others here and don't follow my school at all.  I also think it's different if you're a student in the stands rather than one on the actual field.

The 85 Bears added to my loathing of Chicago teams.   Michael v the Bad Boys sealed it forever.
I understand not all of us Cub fans are the most hospitable.

As a Packer fan who lived in Illinois during the Super Bowl Shuffle Era I couldn't agree more about Bear fans.

But, Michael vs. the Bad Boys sealed it???  What the...??  Do you root for the Grinch against the Whos?  Do you for Drago vs Rocky?  You were rooting for the USSR vs the 1980 hockey team too, weren't you!

I was agnostic about the Cubbies ... until all of a sudden everybody was a Cubbie fan. It was nauseating.

Welcome to Cubfandom 101.

The real baseball fans in Illinois are loyal. They expect their team to win. And while the team does not always win every year, wanting to win is an important attribute of a good baseball fan. Getting restless when your team is .500 or worse is a sign of expectation.

Cub fans understand not word of this. Yeup, the Cubs are good right now and we, the real baseball fans of Illinois, can appreciate it and truly hate it at the same time. We know that you can put the Lakeview Little League on the field at Wrigley and draw 30,000 people. Most true Cub fans probably would not know the difference. Heck, half of yesterday's attendance at Wrigley probably doesn't know the difference between a baseball bat and an iPhone.

We real baseball fans in Illinois wear RED!

Google Cubs versus Brewers fan fights and all the top hits are at Miller Park, none at Wrigley.  Maybe that is because half the Wrigley Cubs are not really Cubs fans, thus no fights there?  <smh>

The Brewers have their share of fans who are also drunken knobs, bussed in from the Hinterlands to tailgate in the parking lot to enter the stadium in the third inning to showcase their machismo over FIBs. My personal favorite was some tool who was screaming and accosting twin 6 year old Cub fans getting ice cream by themselves...that they were going to grow up gay because they were Cubs fans. Of course, when I stepped in to tell this genius to take a hike, he wanted to fight me. Yes, the Brewers fans are classy too.

Good on you for stepping in. I had a similar experience at a Lions' game. It was the Thanksgiving game between the Packers and Lions with the infamous Suh stomp. Was cussed at, shoved, called homophobic things, and even had a beer dumped on me. I was in my 20s at the time so I was fine, but I went with my 9 year old cousin who caught all  the same abuse. The willingness of some people to attack other fans, even children, is truly the most despicable side of sport fandom.

Cubs fans would never verbally or physically attack any fans, ever!

Totally unrelated, what's the status on Steve Bartman?  Has he been able to come out of hiding yet?

Good deflection. Yes, only Cubs fans are obnoxious.

Also, thanks for also getting us back on topic:  Steve Bartman has a World Series ring.

I'm not the one claiming you only find videos of fans fighting in Miller Park, not at Wrigley.

Sorry, I was just curious about Bartman.  Had heard they were trying to invite him back to Wrigley but he had no interest in being back in the public eye?  Wasn't sure if he was able to go back outside again or not yet.  Glad he got a WS ring, big time contributor!  Don't think the Cubs get that elusive WS without Steve Bartman.

Well, I quoted a poster who claimed Cubs fans are the worst and it isn't even close.  My point is each team has their fair share of drunken idiots, including the Brewers.  As a Cubs and Brewers fan (still pissed at Selig for switching leagues) and a Brewers' season ticket holder, there are plenty of numb nuts at Miller Park not wearing Cubbie Blue.

That said, Cubs-Brewers is a peace march compared to Red Sox-Yankees.

You're not welcome here with your "open mindedness" and "gray area" talk. We only speak in extremes here my friend!  Everyone is either an angel or devil, nothing in between.

I forgot, my "real" favorite championships were my daughter winning three state championships in soccer and my son winning one in hockey. My son's was the school's first championship playing against all schools in the state. They had won a couple prior in private school division. Even better was a school of 250 beating three schools at state with over 2k in student body.
Likewise, I am pretty fond of the gold medal my daughter won last week in the National Junior Olympics.

Thanks.  Water polo, so team event.  But she was the only member of the team to play every minute in every game (because she is the goalie!).

I knew a number of people at MU who became Cubs fans because they wanted to be a part of them eventually winning the World Series. So annoying
