Title: Wojo has deepest, biggest, strongest roster yet
Post by: Marcus92 on June 07, 2018, 05:10:23 PM
An overall look at Marquette's roster makeup over the past 4 seasons:

2015-16
10 available scholarship players
Average height: 6-6.0
Average weight: 205.0

2016-17
9 available scholarship players (not counting Traci Carter)
Average height: 6-4.8
Average weight: 207.8

2017-18
9 available scholarship players (not counting Haanif Cheatham)
Average height: 6-5.7
Average weight: 209.4

2018-19
12 available scholarship players
Average height: 6-6.4
Average weight: 211.3

Plenty of caveats here. Someone could transfer mid-season. Listed heights and weights can vary widely. And measurements alone don't equal strength. But from the eye test standpoint, Wojo will have his most versatile and Big East ready lineup yet, with a combination of both size and depth.

Can't wait for the season to start.

What is the correlation of avg team height & weight to being a good team (ie off & def eff)?

No Matta, eyner?

We haven't won a tournament game since 2013, we're coming off an NI f'n T.  Can we please, please, please stop talking about how deep we are, how Wojo will have a tough time managing our talent, etc.

Can we save those type post until we at least go 1-1 in Brooklyn?  please!

Well they are deep.  And Wojo may have some juggling to do if players don't separate themselves from one another early on.  But I think a rotation will develop and minutes will sort themselves out.

Wow, quite prescient! Tennessee's season played out almost exactly as predicted.

"Last season the Volunteers’ adjusted defensive efficiency was 97.5. Add an additional inch to everyone on the roster and that figure drops to 94.3; the Vols would have improved from 55th nationally to 24th. Give the squad another inch, and it would have jumped into the top 10."

Final Adjusted defensive efficiency: #6

"The benefits of increased height are more profound on defense, but they exist for the offense as well. Adding a couple of inches to the Volunteers last season would have turned their 73rd-ranked offense into a top 30 unit. Put it all together, and suddenly Tennessee is comfortably a top 20 team."

Final offensive efficiency: #36

Final combined rank: #13

Effing nailed it! This KenPom guy knows a thing or 2 about college hoops.

Love this last sentence:

"An extra inch or two can transform a bubble team into a title contender."

We were a bubble team with added skill + added size.
This kind of stuff plus Auburn's projections has me feeling great about this upcoming season.

LeDaryll was a very nice addition. That said, your original post made more sense to me. At this time, I am not worried that Wojo has too much talent to manage. Actually, I am more worried that Wojo can coach up the talent. I am looking forward to the day that too much talent is on campus.

I would say we are concentrated, but not deep. We have a lot of players to use at the forward spots. 4 true guards, if you include Anim. Only one true point guard. Only one 6'10"player, who as far as I can remember has never won a jump ball.

As far as team height the roster is skewed with forwards. I suspect the normal roster has six guards. Replace two of our forwards with two 6'2" guards and our average height and weight drops. Of course, if needed Sam and Cain could play guard. However, I would not like to have to play a backcourt of Cain and Sam.

Disagree. I like the way our program has progressed. Almost a mirror image of Tony Bennett's progression at Virginia. This season and next, barring serious injuries or some other kind of calamity, will tell us if Wojo can or can't coach.

I'm optimistic -- partly because I do believe he will show he can coach, and partly because being optimistic is more productive and calming than being pessimistic.

I would say his results have been average so far based on what preseason expectations were compared to how he actually finished.

Year 1: Met expectations of being terrible
Year 2: Fell short of expectations of being an NITish type team
Year 3: Exceeded expectations of no national writers having us in the tournament preseason
Year 4: Met expectations of being an NIT team. In fact, KenPom said we would finish 50th and we finished 53rd.

I am cautiously optimistic. I do have a healthy skepticism which, as you know, is very different than pessimism. The epistemology on Wojo's potential does not support unbridled optimism.

I have a similar cautious optimism for the football program of another alma mater. In that case, there is no question the man can coach. The issue is whether or not he can overcome the coaching excellence of a rival who has established an impeccable record of sustained distinction.

At the end of the day, college sports takes a distant back seat to the laughter of an infant, the love of a good woman, or the brilliance of a colleague. Perspective matters.

I cannot find fault with what you have written. But life is funny in that what is desired is often very different than what is possible.

For me, given Marquette's commitment to its hoops program, I wish for better results than what we have experienced and what I think could have been possible.

Let's do a comparison. Buzz Williams inherited a far worse situation at VPU. And he plays in the toughest conference in college basketball. In the same amount of time he is posting winning records in the ACC and is now getting his team into the NCAA consistently.

Frankly, VPU's stature and profile is now higher than Marquette's.

Coaching matters. I am not convinced Wojo has the right stuff but I really do want to be proven wrong.

I trust your insight on this. And I hope we establish a sustained level of excellence. Vander Blue said the best thing about Buzz' teams was that opponents would mutter, 'sh1t, we gotta play those guys again...'

I want nothing more than for Marquette to make every game competitive again as it was under Tanned Tommy and, especially, Buzz.

As for BallIsLife, while I love Marquette hoops I have never thought about buying a couple bottles of Dom then asking Wojo and the boys to spend a long weekend with me at Alderwood on the Hood Canal...

I don't think many here would dispute that Buzz is a better coach right now than Wojo.  However with Buzz there were certain strings attached that the administration wanted to move away from.  I do think Buzz peaked while at MU (I don't think he will get an E8 at VT, he may if he moves on somewhere else).  Also to many, including some on this board, the only thing that matter is post season success, and Buzz and Wojo have the same number the NCAA tourney wins.

Well like I said, Wojo is average. I'm fine with an average coach in his first few years doing the job  but the expectation is that he grows from average to good and eventually to great. Buzz is an above average coach and shows in his work at VPI. If Wojo continues to be average then I for one will be hoping for a replacement.

Speak for yourself, bruh. BallIsLife

Gonna be a fun ride this year. May lose some early ones with a number of very challenging games... this would cause many to b1tch & moan... but by the end of the season, ppl will understand what a special group we have

The group may be special which is a credit to the coaching staff/recruiting.  The question comes down to, do we have anything more than an average, in-game coach?  I've yet to see anything in Wojo that leads me to believe he can coax/squeeze a few more wins out of his teams by being a savvy tactician.

That aside, I can live with a team that is an NCAA tourney team, back of Top 25 - and Wojo seems to have us there at least from a talent/depth perspective now in Year 5.

You’ve been on point on this for a while.

I have the same expectation this year that I did last year. We will be top 3 in the Big East and make it to the second weekend of the tournament. Last year we missed the top 3 in the Big East by one game and made it to the second weekend equivalent of the wrong tournament.

Although our schedule is tougher this year, I am figuring in the new arena  with its better lower bowl configuration, may give us more of home court advantage. We may be back to the time with Buzz where we had a very formidable record at home.

We agree.

Bullish on the program. Bullish on Wojo. Very bullish on this season.
