I don’t think either MU or Crean wanted the match up. Now it makes sense.

IU should be very good next year. I would think they will be favored going into that game.

Michigan State, once again, not part of the games.  That's a shame.  It's also bad that Rutgers/Penn State/Nebraska all get scheduled in the same year.  Thankfully, DePaul got one of them, but still...

At IU I would guess that we would be a slight underdog. 3 or 4 points. Should be a good game. This early in the season we might be able to catch them as they will have a lot of new players learning to play with each other. Not sure who steps up to be their PG either.

This is also assuming that Juwan Morgan doesn't go pro. I believe he is still testing the waters. If he goes, I don't see them as a tournament team next season.

Pretty good matchup work by the Gavitt games this year. Only two games where I think one side is significantly favored (Michigan at Nova and Hall at Nebraska), I'd expect the home teams to win pretty easily. All the other games seem like toss ups on paper.

Wait. We're lucky to be catching them early before they have learned to play together. Yet we'll be a 3 or 4 point dog (so a pick 'em on a neutral court).

So you're saying we'll be IU's equal to begin the season but later (when they've had time to jell) they'll be the better team.

But if one of their players leaves early they won't even make the tournament.

I confess to being confused.

I'll give you some numbers to help explain.

Marquette looks like the 20th to 25th best team in the country to me.

Indiana looks like the 30th to 35th best team in the country to me.

I see us as the better team... But we'll be playing in their house. As a result,  I would expect them to be favored by 3 to 4 points.

Juwan Morgan is Indianas best player.  He is currently testing the NBA waters. If he returns,  Value add says that he will be the best college basketball player in the country next season. With him,  Indiana is a top 35 team IMHO. Without him,  Indiana is maybe top 60 IMHO...which would leave them out of the tournament.

Yep. If Morgan returns, Indiana will have the two best players on the floor in Morgan and Langford. But I'm not as impressed with the rest of their team. Could be wrong of course!

Unless they have said they just don't want to participate given they usually load up on their non-conference schedule anyway.

Agreed, plus the Big10 is down this year so they should rack up wins against mediocre competition

Think you might have last year confused with next year.

Big 10 should be very deep next season. No truly elite teams at the top, but very good from top to bottom. I see the B1G getting 9 teams into the tournament next season, with teams 10, 11, and 12 still being pretty good. Even Rutgers look like they could finish inside the top 100....barely.

Is our schedule too tough?  ;)

The Big East is losing a ton of good players this year, most teams are in the re-tooling mode.  Even Villy will look a lot different then in the
past, so these games will be resume games.  Indy will be better next year but so will MU, a lot better.  Time for Wojo to step up his game and
coach against better teams then cupcakes.  Glad to see it.  This year might be the toughest schedule MU has had in years, so what.  Let's see
how they play early season, play tough games,  which will make the Big East games seem easier.  I know that Sam if healthy and Markus are
2 of the best returning players in the conference, so that is a start.

Hey, what's up guys? IU fan here. I figured I'd give my thoughts on the game and then come back in November around gameday. I'm very happy with this matchup. A solid top 25 caliber Big East team coming into Assembly Hall. I've always liked Marquette. You guys tried to warn us about Tom Crean. We're very glad he's gone.

Anyways, about the matchup. It could be a toss up. I'll say this. Assembly Hall is a hard place to win if we are even decent. Their is a lot of hype right now especially with the addition of Romeo Langford. I live in his hometown. He is special. He'll win games just by himself. We expect Juwan Morgan back as well. We brought in a outstanding recruiting class and added a bunch of much needed size. Rob Phinisee is a clone of Dominic James. We expect Jerome Hunter to be another impact freshman. Of the returners, Justin Smith is a future NBA player and he'll start at the 3 for us. We also added a Grad Transfer from St Marys that can play as a stretch 4 or 5. Devonte Green is another good guard that we have that is a good 2 way player. We love coach Miller compared to coach Crean. He has a good scheme on offense and defense and we play much more disciplined basketball.

Should be a great game. I expect IU to win the Big Ten and at least 25 wins. I also expect Marquette at the top of the Big East. Markus Howard is a stud. I like Sam Hauser too.

This match-up reminds me a lot of our 15-16 Gavitt game, just with the roles reversed.  A second year coach with a young team, highlighted by a super star freshman hosts an experienced, old, and very good three point shooting team.  If we can even come close to replicating what Iowa did to us that game, I think we'll be very happy.

What is the ticket situation for games there? Is everything sold out ahead of time? How active is secondary market? TIA.

This one sort of falls into the sports bucket list for me, for a regular season game, outside of a tournament, it doesn't get much better.

Nah someone named btownqb, was saying we aren't a relevant program and haven't been since Al. I pointed out that we've had very comparable success to IU since 2000 and the guy essentially said that because they're a blue blood they're still much more relevant and that kids aren't thinking about us. At one point compared us to Loyola Chicago... Would've argued about recruits but it's another teams forum so didn't wanna be that guy.

I'm guessing a few of us were there in 1985 when Marquette finished with 4 players on the court.
36 fouls tends to do that.
MU with 8 FT's made. IU with 45 attempts.

And how can one forget The General grabbing the PA mic during the game?

St. Patrick's day, 1985.  Came back from spring  break.  Watched the game on the 7th floor of the beer can.  Got seriously angry and proceeded to get the drunkest I have ever been.

I remember watching Pat Foley go up for a rebound against Uwe Blab, get cleared out by the center, end up on his back at the top of the key, and get called for the foul.   Even sultan would have gotten angry at the officiating.

no time on the clock when that call was made.  I think they reset to 1 second and Blab made the FT to send it to OT.   Majerus had to be held back on not only the call but on the adding time to allow the FT.

I was on the same floor but different room from Tower; it was our freshman year and we were in McCormick. I went to high school in Indy, grew up appreciating IU but more of a Purdue fan. I too recall being seriously angry at the call against Foley, ended up totally disappointed by the result (and almost look back on it now as the true beginning of the descent into the lowest years of MU b-ball (which--F**K--coincide with my student years!)).

I was too drunk to know if it was the drunkest I've ever been. So, it must've been close.

Drinking with Joe Burke frequently ended up badly. I'm sure I hit all the bars after the game. As I always did.

No, they never should have been in that situation to being with—and refs have never influenced the outcome of a game.😉

I'm guessing a few of us were there in 1985 when Marquette finished with 4 players on the court.
36 fouls tends to do that.
MU with 8 FT's made. IU with 45 attempts.

And how can one forget The General grabbing the PA mic during the game?
I was there. I had to drive home to go to work the next day. Going into two overtimes and losing made it a really tough drive.

I have hated Indiana forever because I hated Bobby Knight, but you are right, Goose ... Assembly Hall is one of the great college basketball venues and everybody should experience it at least once.

Been there twice, 1970's dump if you ask me.  Heard some renovations might have been put in place since last attended.

Agreed, plus the Big10 is down this year so they should rack up wins against mediocre competition

The Big Ten this year should be a top 3 conference.  They did not lose the talent that other conferences lost this past year.

Have you been?  What is it like?  On my bucket list to see it and Cameron. Heard both are amazing. I've been to UCLA's Pauly Pavillion, nothing special but that could be because the crowd was not in it.  If you get a chance, Hinkle is great and the Palestra in Philadelphia also wonderful.  Also underrated is the Pit in Albuquerque.

I went to Cameron two years ago, and Phog Allen this past season. I really enjoyed Phog Allen, but Cameron Indoor was like seeing the Sistine Chapel. That was the best basketball experience I’ve ever had, can’t recommend it enough.

Lose a lot at the top. Gain a lot at the bottom. Likes like a good old fashioned cluster

I've been to Phog a number of times and it's cool but not worth heading out to Lawrence just for that.  I may be turned off by the "isn't this just the greatest environment?  It's really special!  Unlike anything else" multiple times a visit if a) you don't openly fawn about it or b) you tell someone you didn't go to KU.

Your connection to the program probably afforded you a different experience than mine.  I'm dropping my kid off there for hoops camp in a couple of weeks, maybe his experience will endear me more to the facility/program.

I was at Phog for a December (during break) game against Binghamton. It was packed and loud. I was very impressed.

At many schools (not just Marquette), a winter-break game against a crap opponent leads to half-full (at best) buildings and middling excitement.

I know they have nothing else there in Lawrence, but it still was impressive to me.

Agreed, I/we love college hoops, so Phog is a cool experience, but I don't feel the need to go back. Getting to Lawrence is a pain, I liked the campus and the town, but it's not a "gotta get back there" again place for me.

I'd encourage people if they have the means to go to a Duke game, even if you hate Duke as a program, it's campus is unreal, the building is unassuming when you get to it on campus, and the walk from the "concourse" to getting into the seating area and seeing the court/hearing the sounds still gives me goosebumps. Probably like baseball fans that walk up the concourse steps at Wrigley for the first time and then see the field.

Although IMHO nothing beats the horn at the Phog.

Bucket list of college hoops arenas I'd like to see a game in someday:

The Silk Exotic Chaluparena  ;)
Cameron Indoor
Hinkle Fieldhouse
Allen Fieldhouse
The Palestra
Pauley Pavilion

I know Pauley isn't in the same ballpark as the others in terms of age/atmosphere - even a friend who went to UCLA admits it's nothing special - but I grew up watching MU in the Arena and remember hearing about those UCLA teams playing at Pauley all those years. Seems like it'd be fun to check it out...hopefully as an MU road trip.

I could make that argument about pretty much any stadium under those circumstances.

Unless the BC was filled to the corners with 19,000+ it was difficult to make so much noise that it intimidated the opponents.  Now, the MECCA - that place rocked and vibrated and shook with 12,O00.  Ah rah?  Hope the new place rocks

I generally agree with you except that it doesn't apply to many college basketball venues.

I was at the Phog for a Xmas break game against Binghamton. It was sold out and rocking.

Assembly Hall and Cameron are always sold out and rocking, regardless of when the game is played and who the opponent is.

But yes, these and a select few other places are exceptions and not the rule.

Now, the MECCA - that place rocked and vibrated and shook with 12,O00.  Ah rah?  Hope the new place rocks

It was always sold out and rocking when I was there - and that was the start of the Hank Era.
