Title: ANY CHANCE OF NEW UNIFORMS NEXT YEAR?
Post by: mu72warrior on March 11, 2018, 05:57:01 PM
In 50yrs of following MU, these unis are in my top 5 for really uninspiring, they look like they should be worn by Greco-Roman. wrestlers

Put me in the camp of people who love our current uniforms. I honestly think all are great except the navy blues, which just feel average to me.

Wasn't sold on them at first. Thought the cut looked weird, but they have grown on me. I am partial to the thicker side stripes of the Buzz era and wish they wouldn't have just slapped it on the waistband, but I like the incorporation of all the different designs from the past 100 years.

Not sure when they would look to make a change. I mean if they wanted to be "new and cutting edge" they could all ditch the shorts and go straight sweatpants!  8-)

I also like this year's uniforms.

Back in the day, Al was a pioneer in many ways...and one was his getting MU to change uniform styles frequently.  These days, teams change their uniforms all the time, so another change would just make us one of the crowd.

The only problem I have with the current uniforms is the cut of them.  The design is outstanding.  But the cut is what all Nike uniforms have gone to.  Just like when they all went to the super baggy shorts with the super tight tops like 5-10 years ago.  The cut will change soon enough.

Wouldn't mind if we took "AL" and the US Flag off.  They feel too NASCARy right now.  Otherwise I like the design.   Though if we switched, I would be OK because I think that's our brand.  Our tradition is no tradition.

Man, they need a focus group, because the feedback is all over the map here.

I agree with Lens that it feels hodge-podgey. We tried really hard to borrow from our history, but it ended up feeling thrown together.

I think the Buzz-area stripes really aged once everyone did it - I appreciate that they tried to do something different. That said, the stripes are TOO thin now that unless you are in person, it looks more or less like a solid block, which lends to them feeling a bit bland.

I think the cut is great for what the kids are looking for, though it automatically takes us out of contention with the Ox body types.

I don't mind the "Al" on the neckline but the flag has to go.  Hoping for a redesign, I don't like the "Marquette" below the number, it looks tacky, and the cut looks like a swimsuit Abe Simpson would wear. I do like that the "Marquette" is not in the wordmark and instead in block letters, that was a great decision.

These uniforms are anything but bland and boring. The stodgy B1G has a plethora of bland, boring coaches and unis. Since you're apparently big on incendiary coaching demeanor, what do you suggest for a design? How about a hologram-ish
Oz-like Bob Knight emerging from flames?...complete with his mocking "game face" directly under the school name.....would that do it for ya?

I hated them at first. Until I realized, as you state, how they perfectly pay homage and tie-in to 100 years of our MU hoops. I actually really like them now. I can't think of one era of our unis that I didn't like. Yes, though, very hard to top our Buzz era threads. Every year I thought I should be tiring of them...but never did.

Given our history of cutting-edge design, I'd be shocked if we didn't usher in the new arena with another new uniform.

While I like the uniforms, it is interesting that men's basketball jerseys are completely unique and different in style than every other uniform set at the school.  Men's Basketball is the only one that does not utilize its current word marks or imagery.

In addition, the jerseys in comparison to the court design are not aligned.  The court has royal blue out-of-bounds lines and a darker wood within the paint.  With our old court design and jersey combination, they were very much partnered together.

I like the jerseys for their uniqueness.  I am not a fan in regards to the way the current uniforms matchup to the branding and identity of the school's current logos.

You make a good point about matching the court.  I think there is a higher chance we get a court redesign for the new arena than we get new unis

Its better than what we had in CUSA, but other than adding the stripes on the sideline by the opponents bench and diagonal across we haven't done much since joining the Beast.  I like the MU at center, mostly because I think the alternative would be the screaming chicken, but if these NIT rules go into effect for all NCAA games, we'd need a new court regardless, and not at least looking at a new design would be a missed opportunity IMO.

Whatever we do with uniforms, they must emphasize two colors: GOLD and BABY BLUE.

So much of the rest of our league wears blue and white (Georgetown, Nova, Xavier, Creighton, Butler), but no one else uses anything close to the baby blue shade we do.  The gold/yellow is completely unique in the conference.

Along with St. Johns and DePaul, we're holding up the rest of the conference when it comes to being visually striking.  Other leagues (ACC- Cuse, UNC, Miami, etc or Big Ten- Michigan/St, Bucky, Illinois, etc) have a huge variety of colors.

I, too like the current court.  The lighting is weird on TV, a little darker/yellowish or something compared to other courts.  Or maybe I just have a brain tumor or something.

Don't like the current unis all that much.  Seem a little bland to me, which is not traditionally MU's style.

Taking a step back, I really love our current MU branding.  It has a classic feel, despite being relatively new, and it incorporates our colors from a variety of periods - no easy feat.  The Golden Eagle alternate logo is very cartoonish, but that is why it is an alternate and not the main logo.  I believe our former set of uniforms perfectly represented that brand, as well as our court design.  Our new uniforms are obviously representative of multiple eras, so it is hard for them to fully be representing of our current branding.

I came across this court design online (it is not mine and would gladly give credit if I knew who did it), and I think it is very stylish.  It includes a nod to the MECCA court design, while having our colored stripes along the sidelines.  I would get rid of the Golden Eagle in the short corners, as they look out of place.  The MU should still remain on half court.

I love the court-skyline trend thats going around right now.  I think the new and improved Milwaukee skyline has the potential to be really striking on the court. Imagine the Calatrava at one end, then the two skyscrapers, city hall, Marquette Hall and Gesu, then Miller Park on the other end.

The level of detail that you can do with this would not do the Calatrava justice.  You would also run into some scaling problems

WOAT - Northwestern's court from a few years back

Looks like they simply got a bunch of gradeschoolers to fill in the space between the paint and the 3-point circle with magic marker.

Purple happens to be my favorite color, and Northwestern seems hell-bent on ruining it for me.  See also:  their purple football pants.

The stripes all the way down the sideline would be cool but those have been prohibited since the old Philly Spectrum court.  Sidelines have to be a solid color.

I like the huge MU in the middle but not with the Marquette banner.  I remember that eventually that was supposed to go away.  Having to put the name of the school in your logo is small time.  The MU is recognized now on its own.

I wouldn't mind a return to the 2002 and 2003 unis with the block lettering.  I like Nova and Xavier's simple 80's throwbacks that they've busted out.  Maybe add in the camo from the Doc Rivers days.

I like the nod to the old MECCA floor. Understated, but clearly recognizable.

Calling on bo Ellis!  As long as he ain’t coaching(presently in athletics admin. In Chicago) might as well ask him to reach into his inner creativity for us once again

I'd rather a silhouette of the one time Davante got all the way up for a dunk.

A davante silhouette with a bball in one hand and a beef n cheddar in the other.

Lock it topper.

With a smudge of Horsey Sauce on his silhouette lips to top it off.  I am quite sure that a Season Ticket Holder of the Game can make this happen.

A great marketing promotion would be to have Bo Ellis design our uniforms again. I am sure he would love to do it and it would definitely catch the attention of the media.

I like this idea.

Also, how about Bill Scholl and Joe True get on the phone with reps from Untuck It, the makers of custom-tailored untucked casual shirts, for an advertising partnership?

You guys have inspired me to give it a go at designing a new court (easier than unis because its 2d).

Credit to GoldenWarrior11 for the outside matching to our current unis.

Wanted to see a new logo at center, nothing wrong with the current one, just wanted to see something different and the only other alternative would be the screaming chicken, which I don't like.

Liked the MU logo enough to keep it but moved to replace the AL logo, and give Rowsey a spot to launch from.

Wanted to keep Al somewhere so I moved him to the paint and slid the Big East logo to the baseline.  Obviously couldn't go there because of the arc.

Not sold on the powder blue around the perimeter, but I wanted it on more than just center court, because I like the powder blue.

Also forgive the horrendous wood texture that I used, I threw this together kinda quickly.

Any feedback or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Tried to incorporate "We are Marquette" somewhere but no color shows up well on the bumblebee.

While the PC police most likely wouldn't allow an image of Gesu on the court, wouldn't Marquette Hall look cool at center court? Didn't Tom Crean-era BC have this image on the floor, or am I not remembering correctly? DUKE did this at one time with one of their academic buildings. I know I have a gold Crean-era MU Hoops tee with Marquette Hall positioned prominently.

I didn’t know this until recently, but gesu ain’t Marquette

On another note-how’s about the classic silhouette of al in the center or in each lane of both his hands raised in victory-bonus would be of the highs dad in front reinforcing that we are #1 with the double finger salute, enn’a enn’a?  👊

This year's uniforms are hideous, bland and boring.  Kinda match the demeanor of the coach.  Nothing flashy, utilitarian.

My thoughts exactly

For many years, i thought Marquette stuck out as having different and great looking uniforms compared to most other teams.

These current Nike ones are as bland as it gets. Like something you'd see on some random rural high school basketball team trying to pinch pennies.

Yawn

It was on the “watermark” on the back of the jerseys, right above Al’s victory pose.

I like the banner on the logo.

It's true - original design guidelines stated it would be dropped for the the MU wordmark. It was originally intended as a bridge to help people understand that the new MU was Marquette and not another university. For one reason or another they moved the banner logo to the primary athletics logo. You can read the full brand guidelines here: https://www.marquette.edu/omc/documents/MU%20Logo%20Standards.pdf (https://www.marquette.edu/omc/documents/MU%20Logo%20Standards.pdf)

I'm wondering if they eventually will just adapt the secondary logo.  It seems odd to have both in use.

Take 2 for anyone interested.

Threw on the MECCA shading and really like it

Center court is better, but still not convinced it would be an improvement over what we have now

Think the Big East logo pops better as gold instead of white, based off a quick google search the logo is white or blue for everybody, is this a rule? I would think that as long as you have the logo you can make it whatever color you want.

Put Marquette on the baseline per a suggestion, not sold.  Really hard to get letters to show up well on bumblebee

Played around briefly with putting a silhouette of Al somewhere, but it looked extremely cheesy however I set it up.

Keep the suggestions coming.

I like the banner on the logo.

It was part of the initial logo rollout.

We shouldn't have to remind everyone "hey, this 'MU' stands for Marquette."
