Title: I place this all on Wojo.
Post by: Ellenson Guerrero on February 17, 2018, 11:21:58 PM
Down.  On the road.  Season on the line. Makes the adjustments needed at halftime.  Team overcomes double digit deficit with leading scorer injured.  Gets the job done.

Wojo is responsible.

Damn.

I was looking forward to reading how the team quit on Wojo and how he isn't fit to coach a biddy-ball team.

Because like a small but vocal minority, I would rather the team lose so I can be miserable and say, "I told you so!"

A potentially season saving win!

Unfortunately, the injury allowed MU to get back in this game.  This is a blowout loss if Markus does not get injured.

Obviously, we need Markus back ASAP.  But, it has never been more obvious that Markus and Rowsey CANNOT be on the floor together.

Should Howard return this season, the coaching staff needs to figure this out!

He challenged their manhood a few times tonight, and they responded.  The Technical, lighting them up in the huddles, probably at halftime. Made the adjustments, they kept their poise when they took the lead and lost it.  Great win.  The doubters - shame shame shame.

Incredible game!  Forced into not playing midget ball, and sticking with zone made all he difference in the world. Ironic the winning formulat emanates from an injury to our leading scorer.

Length of Cain in zone was huge. More energy for the guys on Offensive end due to not chasing all over the floor.

Good for Wojo for sticking with zone the whole 2nd half.

Hopefully, but I'd probably argue that one. Howard is not even in the same realm of a ball handler as Rowsey.  I think Greg will run the point next year and all will be ok

BS.  When everything goes wrong it's all Wojo's fault, whether he's responsible or not.   When everything goes right it's all Wojo, whether he's responsible or not.  Everything is Wojo all the time.

This is true, of course.

And when the team loses, it's true, too.

But it's very difficult to reason with people who think it's all the coach all the time when the team struggles. So those of us who choose not to rip Wojo every time the opponent scores a basket get to give him a thumbs-up when good things happen - and also get to call out the haters.

This is my biggest concern. Was discussing on Twitter in the first half how our defensive scheme, between the midgets (who can't play zone together) and the switches (left Rowsey 1-on-1 with Hegner in the post and our bigs trying to keep up with their slashers) it was an abject failure. If Howard is available for 40 minutes, do we win this game? I don't think so. It was the defensive change that happened because we had more effective personnel to run a zone.

I will watch the last 12 or so minutes tomorrow. Missed the end, but I do think having only one midget out there helped. I also think going zone helped. Will Wojo be willing to consider zone as a long-term option? I'm skeptical, but I think going forward, we would be better off next year with a zone than all this switching we've been doing.

Next year's team should be longer and more athletic, so we'll have more options. I'm hoping we'll have the zone in our back pocket if we need to change things up mid-game, but I think we'll be able to match up better with Morrow, Joey, and Bailey in the lineup.

It won't work if we're continuing this switching plan. Markus will get isolated in the post by a 6'10" guy the same way Rowsey did tonight. The Hausers, Heldt, John, and Froling will still be too slow when switched onto slashers on the perimeter.

The occasional switch can provide a mismatch, but what we were trying to do in the first half and in recent games is untenable unless you have five guys with 6'8"+ wingspans and the athleticism and strength to defend 1-5.

Yeah we can't switch until we have quick 5s and bigger guards. Gotta assume the hope for next year is that Theo will be better and Morrow and him can excel with the hedging. Heldt and Froling are far too slow to do what's being asked. Rowsey and Howard are far too small.

Elliott, Cain, Hauser, Anim are actually all solid defenders.

Great win, gutsy performance by the guys on the road with their backs to the wall. Let's try to string two together.

That said, it takes a (game - let's hope nothing more) ending injury to show to Wojo what the collective wisdom of this board has been saying for months - the midgets' playing time together should be limited to the greatest extent possible. IMHO a coach getting paid 7 figures probably should have figured that out prior to one of his studs going down.

I think the difference was the Howard injury. If Howard and Rowsey are out there together, the zone likely doesn't work as well. To run it effectively, we need the additional quickness and length we get from guys like Elliott and Cain. It'll be interesting to see how we run it going forward depending on health.

- Marquette showed its Warrior spirit. Its best player out of the game and they come back to win on the road. Mentally tough.
- Why can’t we handle the zone?
- MF disappeared in the second half.

Yes, but this was the first time he stuck with it.

This is incorrect.

As TAMU pointed out in another thread, the zone helped us beat Nova last year. Wojo stuck with it over the next 5 games, and we went 1-4. And that was with JJJ to be a ballhawk. Wojo went back to man against X and we won, starting the 4-1 stretch that clinched our NCAA berth.

This is great.  Yet - what Synergy cannot account for:

1) How long did we stay in zone for?  I'm a firm believer that you execute better with repetition and consistency.  I don't recall 1 instance in the last few years where we went EXCLUSIVELY zone for an entire half.

2) The personnel used in a zone make a HUGE difference in a zone defense's effectiveness.  Cuse always has long athletes.  Playing a zone with both Markus and Rowsey in it, is going to yield worse results than subbing out one of them and adding uber long and athletic Cain.

Got to say I've grown sour on wojo - mostly because he's just so freaking boring & shows zero emotion. But, I got to give credit where credit is due, every player he's brought in plays to win every night which is truly a joy to watch. Elliot, Cain, John, Anim have all shown exceptional toughness all season long. It's a strong point for Wojo, the players play hard for him. Even though I'd like a little more from the coach as long as the players are responding to his teaching of gritty play it doesn't matter if wojo doesn't get as fired up on the sideline or shows even an ounce of personality in post game pressers. I'm such a fan of the way the freshman and Sacar have approached the game this year. We knew what rowsey, howard and hauser would bring but the others playing the way they do speaks volumes to wojo as a leader and is very promising as these kids continue to fill out and improve their game in the big east.

I was kinda waiting for this to pop up and it's something that I think hasn't been discussed much since Saturday.  Watch Wojo and the team closely in all the time following the M2N injury.  I think the demeanor and body language speak volumes.  Immediately after the injury, Wojo is literally pounding the chests of Heldt and Theo.  And he's clearly challenging each and every player to stand up like men if they want this.  Moments later he takes his T, not because he's mad about a particular call it seemed to me, but in a classic 'wake the eff up' approach.  In the second half, we actually hear him talking about winning the last 4 minute segment and telling his players it's zero/zero now.  With 90 seconds to go, he draws up an effective iso play for Sacar.  'I'll make it coach.'  And one last thing.  In the very last timeout with 6 seconds, Wojo steps aside with all his coaches for several seconds and the entire team gathers around Rowsey.  And you can clearly tell AR is reminding everyone about their assignments and to r-e-l-a-x and not do something stupid.  He had 100% attention.

I think I saw a coach and a team grow up a little.  Now it may not salvage the season but I liked every moment of that.

I also think that Rowsey has grown into some what of a player coach/ senior leader role that we'd all hope he'd take.  There's still a little, talk smack with Ben Simmons from the bench in him, but there's no go getting a stupid T after being baited by the other teams walk on that we saw in Madison.

I may have missed this, but were you at the game? Or was all this evident from the TV broadcast? If the latter, I need to go back and rewatch.

It was all on TV.....especially the last timeout.....Rowsey talking to the other players....everybody fully engaged.....Elliott asking questions and talking.

I love how engaged Elliott was during that timeout.  Not typical of a freshman by any means.

Little easier when you're drinking and pacing around the room.

The entire scene at the end in Omaha was a huge endorsement of why Big East basketball is on an up trend. The large crowd going crazy and both teams fight and scrapping hard to the end.

Just on TV.  We had considered going earlier in the year but opted out.  I would have never picked it up had I watched the game live.  But we knew the result as we watched on Sunday and were therefore able to 'scout'.

Ageed.  Loved how he interacted with everyone including retrieving Rowsey when he walked back on the court as the officials were checking the clock and there was a delay.  He also knew when it was time to be quiet and listen to the Senior.  All good.

You don't think it's a huge endorsement of wojo? Shocking!  ::)
