Could go either way.

If we weren't so sloppy we could be rolling.

But also with how bad everyone outside Rowsey is right now, being up 3 is remarkable as well

Sam terrible. That’s two passes to St John’s players leading to baskets.

Too many blocked layups, losing 50/50 balls, turnovers.

Calm down....Rowsey playing great, but don’t want the hero ball stuff, which he is doing now.  Play as team and just stop the dumb turnovers.

We are doing good at getting 1 stop every time we get up 4.

Avoiding giving them a huge run so far is key

Cain dribbles with his left hand, usually 2-3 dribbles.   If there is a lane, he goes to the rack.   If not, he pulls up.

We also need to hit our open shots.  Howard is 0-3 on wide open looks.

Also need to draw fouls.  St. John's fouls more than any other team, we have only drawn 4 fouls so far.
Title: Re: St. John's game thread
Post by: nyg on February 10, 2018, 11:39:21 AM
And the fouls start, knew it was too good to be true.  They have fouled on four out of last five possessions.  Now Sacar and Heldt in trouble.

No Wojo timeout after 8-0 run surprised me, they needed it.

Offense brutal, running clock down and then chuck up a shot with second to go.

Wide open 3, dribbling to the left.  Rowsey shoots about 60% on that shot, that is an eFG% of 90%.  That would be the equivalent of 2.7 ppp.

100% of coaches in America would scream at him if he passed that up.

Wojo has got to devise a way to get the little guys open.  Pick n pop has been scouted.  3 man weave up top is stale.  Ball movement is hectic and inefficient.  Coach needs to earn his salary in 2nd half.

Well, we knew before hand had to stop Ponds.  He has 17 of STJ 34 points.

Two fouls on Simon and Owens, need to get them 3 early, very early.

Rowsey has taken 13 of MU's 29 shots, he is 5 for 13 and has 19 of MU's 32.  A lot of bad shots though and one miracle.   MU 4 for 13 from three

MU up 26-19 and Cain makes a dumb travel, went downhill from there with STJ on 15-6 run, with MU fouling, turnovers, etc.  Stated earlier, thought Wojo should have called timeout.

MU seems to be letting clock run down and then shooting with seconds on clock, don't get it.

A lot of time, get them in foul trouble and please stop the dumb turnovers

You clearly are not paying attention. Pick left him wide open dribbling left, shot it from about 24 feet.  They design the offense for shots just like that.

Announcers did not call it a bad shot, called it "off the mark" and his first "bad miss" meaning it wasn't in and out.

Coach didn't pull him for that, it was part of a planned substitution at under 4.

Rewatched it, it is 100% as I remembered and stated.

Hahahahhahahahaha please stop.

He literally pulled him and took him aside.

The announcers called the shot bad the moment he took it.

And for you to say that's the shot you want EVERY SINGLE time in a game is psychotic.

Any team loses by 30 every game if they only take that shot with 40% shooters
Title: Re: St. John's game thread
Post by: forgetful on February 10, 2018, 11:59:58 AM
We just need to make shots.  We left 10-12 point on the board simply by missing shots we should, and normally do make.

My guess is we shoot better than 31% from 3, and better than 35% from the floor the rest of the way.  If we do, we should win.

As much as l love shooters, Wojo needs to place defense at priority #1 from a recruiting standpoint. Never in my life have I found the phrase “offense wins games, defense wins championships” more true. Sure it’s been fun to see 52 point performances and lots of 30 + point performances. But none of it means a thing when you can’t make the tourney.

Why did the jump ball go to SJU? They got the ball to start the half. Did I miss a jump call?

Inadvertent whistle for some reason changes possession. Which is dumb as unnatural carnal knowledge.

No we don't.

If we want to make the tournament without winning the Big East Tourney we do.  If we go 9-9 and get the Chamionship game we are still sweating it out on selection Sunday

No, they are young, remember.  The ref conspiracy.

Reality, no defense for Ponds.  The guy is on unreal tear and they did it with Owens on bench for almost entire second half.  MU did not play like a team, bad turnovers.  Just have to go 4-1 rest of way.

Woj comes in with a gameplan and once the opponent adjusts to it we’re toast.
I don't know how you let the one guy who can beat you just get whatever he wants. Other than a few possessions of zone, we made no adjustments to stop Ponds. Nothing. No doubles or traps off their pick and roll, nothing. I am just dumbfounded that we had no answer to try anything to stop their one guy who could beat us pretty much all by himself.

Inexcusable to have Ponds hit 3 3's in Sam's face in about a 5 minute span. There's no coaching going on at all.

So what did you want,Sam to play tight and have Ponds blow by him?

St. JOHN'S has become a tough team to beat. They are not a fluke.

Yes, giving up 2 points is better than 3, is it not?  That wasn't even my complaint, there's no good reason why Sam was switched onto Ponds, fight through a F'n screen and stick on your guy.

He is a great player, and is in an unbelievable zone right now.

Usually you do exactly what Hauser did with him.  Let him shoot 3's. He shoots 24% on the season, and 31% for his career from 3.  On a tear lately.

You play the odds.  Odds say Ponds misses those 3's.  Today he made them.

Fully agree. Try our best big, give up the 24% 3 point shooting and stop the lay-ups that no one else has been able to do in three games. It didn't work but a correct call.

We just aren't good.

This.  Basically, our opponents will try to run our main three guys off the 3 pt line, and never leave them to help.  Unfortunately, ALL our other guys are easily handled by a remotely competent single defender (and those defenders are free to help our main three).  Makes it much tougher for our main guys to score, as they do not have Ponds' quickness and/or strength.  Couple that with our sieve-like defense, and we are not that good.

Cute. I would love to have that job.

It's very simple. Make somebody else beat you. Trap him hard off the screen instead of just rolling over and switching a slow big onto him.  Make him give up the ball.

Do SOMETHING to disrupt his rhythm and make one of their less capable guys initiate the offense.

We did nothing to make him uncomfortable. Nothing.

We doubled and helped on him for a two minute stretch and had success, then we stopped.  I disagree 100% that we defend him properly.  They scored every single time down the floor for about 10 minutes, often with and 1s or 3s.  Literally having 5 guys stand at the three point line with their hands up so they only got two points each time and we didn't foul would have been better.

Here's the thing.  Ponds misses those 3's like he usually does.  And he misses some of the tough contested shots and people on here are talking about how great the D on Ponds was.

Butler played Ponds the same way we did.  He went 0-12 in that game.

Was it a good design from them? but a Bad design from us?

The difference in the two game plans is that Ponds is on fire right now, and was ice cold against them.

Could we have executed the game plan better, absolutely.  Too many defensive lapses when he drove the paint.  But there was nothing intrinsically wrong with the game plan.

Sometimes a player is better than the plan.

You want to run double teams at a guy who shoots 37% from 3?  I mean, he only went 4/7 from deep, so let's not pretend that he killed MU by his outside shooting.  He was 12/16 from 2 and 8/9 from the line.  He was beating guys off the dribble regularly.

MU handed the ball six times to STJ players leading to 13 points.  Never seen anything like that.

Sacar threw ball into the stands.

Froling came into game and three seconds later, just plowed a guy offensively, then of course his layup.

Sacar had I believe four layups blocked and one shot under the basket that almost went over it.

Rowsey and Howard probably had four airballs.

Held back to planet earth. 2 points and 5 fouls.

Hauser gets hot and Rowsey starts chuckin  He went 11 for 26 and Markus 6 for 19.

Heldt, Cain, Sacar, Froling and Elliott just not there at all.  Brutal day.

STJ shoots 60%, MU 40%

MU fouls 23 times, STJ had 15 with Owens with 4, sitting almost entire second half.

The three pointers didn't bother me.  No help until way too late when he beat his primary defender (which was every single time he wanted to) bothered me. .  You need another defender to spy him or trap him.  Just make him give up the ball.

It hurt that we could not take advantage of Owens absence.  Our interior guys not the kind that make you pay when your interior defender is out.

FWIW, I don't know how good SJU is as a defensive team.  I know they're a poor rebounding team.  But like Providence, a they have a lot of rangy athletic guys, and that gives us a hard time on offense and on the boards, particularly without Theo.  They were able to stick with Rowsey and Howard through the multitude of screens we set.

Asking Heldt or Froling to D up on a guys with some size and quickness who can go to 15 feet and put the ball on the floor is a tough ask, as it is not in their tool kit.  Our team should be better able to handle that with the influx of guys next year.

I guess we'll get over this one.  I remember they way SJU dismantled us last year in NY it seemed like we could never beat that team and yet we had no trouble with them in Milwaukee.

When a team has scouted you offense to the point where they can beat you to the spot, its time to call another play. the SJU players didn't even run by the double screen, they took a short cut across the lane and waited for Marcus to get there.

They ran plays.  Distinctly remember plays run for Sam.  But again, when you are unbalanced you don't have many choices.  You can beat players to spots because they have no fear someone is going to beat them.

I agree.  Against Providence Theo did some things to keep them a little honest and against Seton Hall Heldt and Anim did.  SJU had no trouble dealing with our satellite players with single players who also were able to provide help.   The only way to get around our issues is for some of the other guys to become serious threats.  No evidence that we can count on that.

I feel like this years squad's youth shows at some point in everygame.  I know I am sick of that excuse, but it's true.  We really missed Theo's physicality today.  When he is engaged in the game, he just makes us tougher.  Harry doesn't bring that.  I was worried about this game with him in the lineup!  I knew Ponds was going to get every call.  Right now he is the NCAA darling, right up there with OU' s Young.  That is where my pregame concern came from.  When a scorer gets going, and continues to get confidence at the free throw line, they can become unstoppable.  The refs gave this guy uncontested shot again and again at the charity stripe, and his confidence continued to grow. From there GAME OVER!  He is too good once he gets rolling!

The refs didn't give him anything.  MU fouled him and others, no question.  Refs can't continue to be excuses every game, MU just tends to foul, a lot.  Probably last in BE play and bottom 20% in NCAA.

Ponds is just a great player, who really couldn't shoot threes, but lately he has and man is he quick.  No match for any MU player.

After coming out in man in the second half, which SJU abused, we switched to zone.  It was initially successful, but then SJU started getting inside with ease.  I think they scored on 3-4 straight possessions at some point.

I would’ve stayed in it - the isolation on Rowsey and attacking of ponds could’ve been reduced in the 2/3. Take your chances they beat you in another way.

Tough game for MU.  Ponds in a zone.  Mullin did a good job of getting Ponds into switch situations that left Hauser to guard.  St. John's plays hard AF.  Thought we did too.  But, St. John's is simply more athletic.  They basically played a 5 man rotation today.

We applied full court pressure maybe 4 possessions?  Should have picked them up full court all game..using Cain and Elliott much more.  Should have put a couple of hard fouls on Ponds going to the basket.  We missed Theo.

At this rate, not sure I'd put Wojo ahead of Mullin in Big East coaching ranks.

Not much has worked for Wojo lately.

I heard he just saved a lot of money on car insurance....

So the "and 1" on Sacar was a foul? I can bring up at least 4 more instances from this game.  The Big East has the worst officials in all of college basketball.  Ask any Creighton or Xavier fan after their game today.  I have seen Junior Varsity crews who are head and shoulders above any Big East crew!

We blame our bigs all the time, you think they are doing what they are told to do by screening out high all the time. We have such small guards its hard for them to even see a wide open big if he is standing wide open and they really don't have much desire of getting it inside.

Who should we be getting it inside to?

That’s my point we really don’t try

My point is that there is no consistent insider scorer.

Why do you think that is it’s not really part of our offense it’s pretty much 3 pointers or a guard driving all the way

Because MU doesn't have players who can post or drive with any consistency.

My point is that there is no consistent insider scorer.

Heldt has no offensive confidence right now. He gets the ball near the hoop and is looking to kick out for the 3.

Harry is basically looking to back people down over his left shoulder whichever St. John’s was overplaying.
