Great stuff. Thanks so much for sharing! Might be worth a pin at the top of the board given how often d, o and tempo are discussed and referenced.

As Wojo get his own guys our "O" improves and our "D" slips. No surprise there.

True. I wonder how the tempo correlates, if at all. Tempo changed between 17 and 18, while O and D remained steady

AdjT went down from 70.1 to 69.7... (2016-17 to 2017-18 thus far).. not a huge difference. The change in college basketball overall is larger and going to the opposite direction, however... from 68.1 to 68.6..thus the 'ranking' change.

Avg poss length of offense was 16.3 last year, this year it's 17.0.. both years were elite offense with lots of 3's... I'm OK with this uptick which is the reason for the slower tempo.

Defensively, it's been the opposite. From 17.6 down to 17.3.

Conference play only.. last year 69.3.. UP to 71.8 this year. (frequent crap defense causing some of this, I believe).

Rambling.. point is.. gotta look carefully to make conclusions..

Great to see the AdjT of 305 when Buzz had the midgets. I still have mixed feelings about him but I have to say I thought that year showed that the guy can coach. He adjusted the game to suit his personnel.

The way they moved the ball, it sure didn't feel slow.

Careful how you utilize the rankings in your analysis, they are not absolute, they are relative to the other teams in that given season. For a non-controversial example, our tempo could pick up but if NCAA basketball increased tempo as well our ranking wouldn't change much. It's the statistic to look at across seasons, not the ranking.

A lot of discussion has been made about Wojo's shortcomings on defense (for good reason). This discussion has branched out into comparing to prior MU teams. Here's a little recap of the past few years (caption, record, top 6 in minutes in order, stat (ranking)):

2013
  • Buzz's Elite eight team.
  • 26-9.
  • Vander. Junior. Trent. Jamil. Davante. Otule. (Davante didn't start a single game)
  • KenPom AdjO 113.2 (24)
  • KenPom AdjD 94.9 (45)
  • KenPom AdjT 63.3 (230)

2014
  • Buzz's last hurrah.
  • 17-15.
  • Derrick. Jake. Jamil. Davante. Todd. Otule. (Todd didn't start a single game)
  • KenPom AdjO 109.7 (97)
  • KenPom AdjD 98.6 (60)
  • KenPom AdjT 68.4 (186)

2015
  • Wojo's beginning.
  • 13-19.
  • Carlino. Derrick. Fischer. Juan. Duane. STJr/JJJ (essentially a tie)
  • KenPom AdjO 105.3 (154)
  • KenPom AdjD 98.5 (69)
  • KenPom AdjT 63.7 (205)

2016
  • The Ellenson Era begins.. (and ends).
  • 20-13.
  • Henry. Haanif. Duane. Fischer. JJJ/Sandy/Traci (essentially a 3-way tie)
  • KenPom AdjO 108.0 (116)
  • KenPom AdjD 100.1 (88)
  • KenPom AdjT 70.1 (83)

2017
  • Wojo's first NCAA bid.
  • 19-13.
  • Sam. JJJ. Katin. Haanif. Fischer. Markus. (Katin only started 4 games)
  • KenPom AdjO 120.8 (8)
  • KenPom AdjD 104.2 (165)
  • KenPom AdjT 70.1 (75)

2018 (to date)
  • Wojo's 3 amigos.
  • 19-13.
  • Sam. Markus. Rowsey. Sacar. Matt. Greg.
  • KenPom AdjO 119.5 (13)
  • KenPom AdjD 105.7 (176)
  • KenPom AdjT 69.3 (119)

*Just from the above, I noticed in MPG that Buzz relied very heavily on 1-4. Wojo spreads minutes out more on 1-7.

Others:

2003
  • Crean's final four
  • 27-6.
  • Wade. Jackson. Diener. Merritt. Novak. Townsend (not in order)
  • KenPom AdjO 120.5 (2)
  • KenPom AdjD 99.2 (109)
  • KenPom AdjT 65.7 (219)

2009
  • Arguably the best year of the 3 amigos (Buzz as HC).
  • 25-10.
  • Jerel. Wes. Lazar. DJames. Butler/Burke (essentially a tie)
  • KenPom AdjO 117.1 (9)
  • KenPom AdjD 96.1 (52)
  • KenPom AdjT 67.5 (78)

2010
  • Buzz's midgets/Lazar.
  • 22-12.
  • Jimmy. Lazar. Cubillan. DJO. Mo Acker. Buycks.
  • KenPom AdjO 115.1 (21)
  • KenPom AdjD 95.5 (55)
  • KenPom AdjT 62.3 (305)

I still remember MU going on an 8-0 run in 2014, and the announcer said something like, "now for some teams a big 8-0 run might be a minute or two blitz, but for Marquette and 8-0 run takes 6 minutes of them just not letting you score and scoring occasionally."

It always strikes me how mediocre the team defense was during Wade's Final Four season.

It always strikes me how mediocre the team defense was during Wade's Final Four season.

The half court defense was okay.  My god that team was awful at transition defense.  The amount of layups teams got off of non-turnovers was really bad for a Final Four caliber team.
