Title: do we really need to go here?
Post by: rocket surgeon on January 14, 2018, 04:15:49 PM
this is what happens when one has a little too much time on their hands-university of south florida public

health "expert", ellen daly Ph.D. says dentists should be asking their patients about their "diving" habits.

sorry, but i have a funny feeling this ain't gonna end well.  with today's sexually charged environment, the

last thing we need is a bunch of dr. weinsteins out there trying to go that extra oral healthcare mile...if it

just saves one...no thank you-not in my pay grade.  oh, but don't be shocked ::)

My dentist only asks me questions that give him a chance to sell me something,   like a mouth guard or a CPAP machine.

Look, if you don't think dentists should get involved with these types of questions, I understand.  (I disagree however.)

But why are you degrading her credentials?

whatever happened to "don't ask, don't tell"?

so if the patient grows protuberances on their tonsils, they can sue us cuz we didn't tell them NOT to duck for the oyster or dig for the clam?  patient needs to get a thorough health history-enn'na?

Dentists are doctors, they are expected to advise a patient on their oral health.  This is an important aspect of ones health.  If you are uncomfortable "going there" because of the topic...you went into the wrong profession.

If you feel uncomfortable "going there," and do not because it is awkward, you are opening the door for a malpractice lawsuit, and if one of your patients unfortunately succumbed to throat cancer, you should lose that malpractice suit.

ya know forget, you can spare the lecture-you know how i take care of things that are out of my realm yet continue to deliver the "standard of care"?  i refer them to someone who can better treat the malady in question.  i have been doing this for over 31 years WITHOUT incident.  that's not by accident.

i am not going to start asking patients about their sex lives or foreplay, afterplay, during play, how many partners, what gender, 3-ways, 4 ways, swinging, swapping...if they've got an abnormality, wart(s) what have you, in a place in their mouth that isn't normally where they are typically seen, they are going to a specialist.  i am not going to ask them how it got there-kinda late ein'a?
i am not going to open a conversation with a 20-something by telling them slobber bobbers et.al are not good for their health.  i have a funny feeling that ain't going to end well.  speakin of malpractice...

You do realize that there are all sorts of health screening questions asked whenever you go to a doctor right?  How is this any different?

In fairness, you can present the benefits of oral sex, too.  In fact, the male gender is requesting you provide complete information and not simply the risks.  :D  There are health benefits.

An anti-depressant
Sleep aid
Lowers blood pressure
Reduced risk of prostate cancer for men

Funny, my doctor advised me that dentists are indeed the front line against the type of throat cancer that has reached near-epidemic proportion in men (see, e.g., https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/silent-epidemic-cancer-spreading-among-men-n811466). This is because there's no way to screen for that type of throat cancer that's become so ubiquitous, which is caused by HPV -- often contracted unknowingly during oral sex, sometimes decades ago. So the best way to "screen" is for dentists to identify early signs of it. By opting out of those conversations, which are completely relevant to screening for this type of throat cancer that's become so common, you're putting your patients at risk.

i have no problem identifying early signs of anything, but we've been screening for oral cancer for years.  the terrible triad just became the quagmire quadraplex-drinking, smoking gum disease and now cunninglingus from both sides of the plate.

what's next?  bestiality ain't good for the tonsils?

I'm with rocket on this one.  I'm perfectly comfortable with my dentist looking for signs of cancer and referring me to a specialist if there he/she sees anything concerning.   Perhaps I'm wrong, but I suspect a lot of people will feel the same way that I feel, and would be extremely uncomfortable discussing such issues with their dentists -- even if it is a good idea medically.  I would feel more comfortable talking about such issues with a "real" doctor (no offense to my dentist friends and family members).

I'm pretty sure I'd feel the same way even if my dentist wasn't sitting across the table from me at Thanksgiving.

Not a dentist, but this misconception is a problem.  Dentists undergo the same training, in terms of coursework and knowledge as a medical doctor.  The reason dentistry is its own separate field, despite it being a medical profession and same training is a fascinating bit of history.

While I believe that your statement is somewhat overstated (although I am very open to being educated), I understand your point and was making the statement in jest.  I really do hope it wasn't offensive to the dentists on the board.  That said, I stand by my point that even though it might be unreasonable and imprudent, most people would be more comfortable speaking with such things with their primary care physician or a specialist.

Edited to add:  I really hope that nothing I've said in this thread is interpreted to denigrate the academic or professional work of dentists.  As I said, I have dentists in my family (perhaps the reason for what I intended as a good-natured jest), and I think very highly of what they do.  Just because I've suggested that I think your comment is overstated (i.e., I don't think they undergo all the same training or coursework as MDs) does not mean that I think one is more rigorous than the other.  Perhaps I'm completely misinformed.  I'd think there is significant overlap, but then they move into their own specialized curriculum.

absolutely no offense taken here.  thanks for your support and clarification of the issue from a "regular joe's" pov.  what us guys usually do in situations where we need a 2nd opinion on something noted as to be "not within normal limits" or more specific to this topic, an abnormal growth, sometimes cauliflower-like appearance, pedunculated, etc we refer to an oral surgeon.  i would feel very comfortable putting them closer to the medical field than just us general dentists ;D even though we do perform some pretty juicy stuff on occasion.  some of these oral surgeons, however can actually take a mouth apart and put it back together, i.e. orthognathic surgery
