Think I might finally get around to filling in the MCU gaps before Thanos unleashes hell this summer.
Trying to get excited about JCVJ, but just can’t seem to conjure up enough strength to make it out of the pilot.
Waiting for MITHC-3 to drop, God only knows when.
Rewatching Future Man with the wife. She doesn’t know it yet, but if I keep the volume at 11 after bedtime, I figure she won’t have much of a choice. That’s how I got her hooked on Rick and Morty. Guess that makes me something like a Hulu crack dealer.

I'll queue it up. Haven't really gotten into Amazon's stuff for awhile. Patiently awaiting season three of Man in the High Castle. Looks like season four of Mozart in the Jungle is coming sooner. Not even sure I'll watch it; the first season was great, last two just did nothing for me.

For other really good British comedies take a look at White Gold if you haven't seen it yet. Only one season so far but it was pretty good. Features some of the cast from The Inbetweeners if you've ever seen that.

Seriously, very well done and entertaining. Worth a look, especially if old Jewish people humor (OJPH)* works for you. Not at all preachy or “anti-men” as some have described (not here...some of my coworkers, etc. who probably haven’t seen it themselves).
OJPH is like British comedy... you either get it or you don’t. And if you don’t, don’t try... you’ll only frustrate yourself.

Finished watching S3 of Man in the High Castle for the second time. Had to watch it again since I felt extremely underwhelmed the first time. At least I picked up on a few things I missed the first time through, but I can easily say I was disappointed.
I get why writers and directors interweave contemporary issues from today's society into TV and movies to draw attention (and boost their Emmy/Oscar hopes), but good lord baby Moses, did we really need two separate story lines about what homosexual relationships faced under the Reich in the 60's? (hint: not a hell of a lot different from our universe where the Allies won).
At least the new season of South Park is showing promise.

Currently watching Atypical S2 on Netflix. Fantastic show that I'm shocked doesn't get more buzz. Also the new OITNB season. After a few down years, I'm enjoying S6 more.
Recently watched Jack Ryan. John Krasinski is so freaking good. I'm amazed the MCU hasn't yet thrown a pile of money at him to play something (Reed Richards?). Also, GLOW is really good. Very much looking forward to Daredevil S3 this week.

What I read about it wasnt great. Which is validating as I have no interest in watching it, despite consuming most everything on HBO. Besides not being able to stand Lena Dunham, Girls went from a decently funny show to self indulgent trash as Dunham's ego and status grew. Hard pass.

Sci-Fi on the major networks: LOST. The "you have to watch it for the water-cooler and online talk": LOST. No other show has ever captivated viewers with recurring "mysteries" and compelling characters like LOST did, until maybe Game of Thrones.
Sure, seasons 4-6 weren't so great, but seasons 1-3 are probably my favorite television series.

Once again, maybe I should give it a shot. I actually started last a few years ago, but only made it in about 6-8 episodes. Funny thing is, I actually liked it. But I just don't ever really get a chance to seriously binge, so shows that are more than a couple of seasons are really hard for me to stick with because I figure I'll never finish them. It only makes it worse when I constantly hear that the ending sucked.
I've managed to stay relatively un-spoiled on lost, aside from hearing that ending wasn't satisfying. Maybe I'll pick it back up. Honestly, I'd probably have to restart from the beginning.

I really, really enjoyed it and got my family hooked as well. It's an easy binge show because there are only two past seasons, and only 13 half-hour episodes per season. So, you can blow through 5 episodes in a couple hours.
I'm still not entirely sold on S3.

That's because they are written initially to be short series, but networks become afraid to drop them when they bring in good ratings. So the story ends up plodding along.

I think I mostly don't like the over-sized roles that the various hormone monsters and Coach Steve are having in Big Mouth S2. I just find them beyond stupid. I do like the closer looks at the kids and the topics that matter to them.

Was very pleasantly surprised with S1 of Atypical because, as you say, it has gotten pretty much zero buzz. Haven't gotten around to S2 yet but I will. Looking forward to it more now, brew, so thanks.

Hmm ... I'm not sure how one defines "recurring mysteries," but I'd say Dallas, for one, captivated viewers WAY more than Lost did. I think the "Who Shot JR?" episode -- which became an international sensation -- is still one of the most watched programs in TV history.
Plenty of other shows did plenty of "captivating" before Lost existed, too. But sure, it does have its place in our culture, and you might be right about it starting some trends. I tried watching the first couple of episodes and just couldn't get into it; doesn't mean it was a bad show by any stretch.

I could name a dozen LOST-clones that started ok but turned bad really quickly. The problem was
a) not creating compelling characters that you can root for, a la Hurley or Charlie
b) giving away too much of the mystery too soon. I fully expect Manifest to reveal why the plane disappeared in the first dozen episodes. On LOST that took like 5 seasons.

If you go in expecting all of the answers, you will be disappointed. If you go in looking for awesome character arcs, you will be very pleased.

I'm 2 1/2 episodes into S3, and I told my wife last night that i was thinking of bailing. This helps confirm that feeling.
Even though S2 suffered from losing Spotnitz (showrunner) halfway through, between Stephen Root's appearance and Julia's "defection" early on, there was enough of a hook, and just enough twists throughout, to keep audiences engaged through to the climatic Volkshalle scene in E10.
I don't want to spoil anything, but I felt that E10 this time around was very anti-climatic, and the whole season was just too predictable... in fact, I felt like all of the major plot twists were already revealed in the various trailers [travelers, an early machination of Rick's portal gun, someone's alive, someone's dead, J Edgar Hoover is right at home being a Nazi, etc.] I won't go so far as to say they've jumped the shark, but it definitely felt contrived to the point where you immediately say to yourself, "I could have come up with something better than that" and then you go back and watch it again just to make sure that you're right.
That said, I think a lot of people were turned off from the first two seasons because they found themselves (and felt guilty about) sympathizing with certain Nazi characters... the good news is that there's none of that in S3; the Nazis - all of them - are clearly the villains again.
Unfortunately, S3 just strikes me as a setup for S4 in that it doesn't stand on its own like the first two seasons do... I was really hoping for more development on the Smith character (e.g. what happened to him in Cincinnati, how did he transition from Army to SS, how did he gain the confidence of Berlin, what happened to his American ideals, just how much does his family know about his job, etc.) Unfortunately, all of that is probably revealed in S4, which makes S3 a necessary evil.

I would add that this is a show that you should go back to Netflix and watch it from the beginning and in order. Sometimes, for sitcoms that's not important. For this one, I think it is. Honestly, I'd flipped by it a couple of times when it was being broadcast, but it didn't pull me in. After hearing some good things about it I decided to watch it from the beginning this summer. I was hooked within the first few minutes of the pilot. I loved the setup (which I didn't know at all when I'd flipped by), and the Doug Forcett thing in the opening minutes just really matched my sense of humor.

Not sure if this was sarcasm, but no.
Online episode recaps have been around since internet message boards existed, including decades old series where people would publish recaps of each episode. So not new at all.
But the conceptual idea is as old as television. Finding the "one-armed man" was leading evening news for the finale of The Fugitive. Twin Peaks was on the major news repeatedly. Format changed with internet, but the concept has been around forever.
The Mystery Premise...see Twin Peaks...and Lynch didn't invent that concept either.

Unfortunately, I kind of expected that as soon as they announced there'd be a S4 before S3 was even out.

Agreed on all counts. Not sure having them out in the world and potentially separated is the best thing. Had some apprehension early in S2, though, and that turned out OK, so I will trust them to get it right.

I was out in NYC visiting a cousin in December 2016 and the day we lost to UW was very cold out there so we stayed in and she wanted to start watching The Good Place. Watched probably the first 5 or so episodes. On my flight home a few days later there were TVs over every few rows of seats so you couldn’t change the channel and The Good Place was on. Have kept up with it since because why not, it’s like 23 minute episodes. Don’t think it’s amazing but good enough to keep me watching Kristen Bell...

Just finished Atypical Season 2 on Netflix. I cannot stress enough how good this show is. Great acting, great characters, and an absolutely brilliant lead character. It is, by far, the best sitcom I've seen in a generation, and only amplified by how deftly they mix comedy with realistic drama. I would advise anyone to stop watching any other show and binge Atypical. Television truly does not get better than this.

Watched "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" the other night. I'm a big Coen brothers fan, but even that one tested me a little. It's made of of six short stories, a couple of which were very good. A couple were pretty dull.

Check out Patriot on Amazon. Season 2 dropped about 2 weeks ago. I absolutely LOVE this show. I like stuff that's a bit different though. A fascinating mix of somber, sweet, funny and dark. Well acted, beautifully shot. It's got an odd pace to it that feels a little different, kinda European. One of my favorite binges in a long time.

I highly recommend the "Explained" series on Netflix, if you haven't seen it already.
Each episode covers a topic that many people don't know a lot about, and the topics vary widely, from K-pop, to the water crisis, to cricket, to wealth inequality.
The subjects that could be considered political are treated fairly and even-handedly. In the episode on the gender gap in wages, for example, there was a clip of Hilary Clinton acknowledging (without prompting) that a significant amount of it is due to choices women make to focus on their families as opposed to their careers. It also talks about the affect of institutionalized gender discrimination.

Wife and I just binge watched End of the Fxxxing World. It is deliciously dark and nihilistic. If you enjoy eating at Arby's, you will like this show.

Besides finding Gosnell guilty, the jury was quite critical of the Pennsylvania state health authorities for overlooking the "clinics" many violations even after an abortion rights group reported them to the state.

When the last one ended, Mrs. 82 said, "That's 8 hours we're never getting back."
It wasn't just disappointing, it was bad TV. We recognized that during the first episode, but we wanted to see how they resolved everything. Big mistake, one I'll try not to make again.

If you like roast/insult comedy, "Bumping Mics with Jeffrey Ross and Dave Atell" on Netflix is pretty darn funny. Lots of celebrity guest stars, too.

2.5 episodes into S2 of Mrs. Maisel, and so far it's shaping up to be every bit as good as S1 (if not better). The B-plots have essentially taken over the story completely, especially with the respective parents' arcs... which really makes the A-plot pop.
Fans of Archer and Arrested Development will appreciate the use of twisted echo cut.

Regardless, it’s not a Millennial thing... the whole distribution model for both movies and TV is being turned upside-down as a result of technology that has - until recently - primarily been consumed, but not driven, by Millennials.

Agree that it's an interesting list. Like you, I thought Llewyn Davis was underrated but most of my friends who saw it were lukewarm. I might also have put Raising Arizona a bit higher. Hard to argue with the top 4, though I might have reversed their order.

It was daddy-daughter night tonight for the finale. When I explained no more episodes until next year, the only explanation I could conjure was, “Eleanor needs to finish Frozen 2 before they can make more episodes.” That either totally worked or she’s now as confused as ever.

I enjoyed the Jack Ryan show as well though there is just something about Abbie Cornish that makes me feel like she is a terrible actress, I've never liked her in any role she's been in. Worst part of the whole show but still overall a very good show.

We're in the process of looking at changing. My understanding is that we're paying a little over $200/mo for UVerse. We got something in the mail from Cox, and it looked like we could cut our costs a lot. Their fairly basic package is only like $90, so that looked great. But then I realized it is pretty short on the ESPN channels (only flagship and 2), so I got started thinking about the next package up. Then I saw that if I want a WiFi modem I'll either have to buy one or pay $10.99 a month. DVR? That's $12.99/mo for the basic level one, or $19.99/mo for the one I'd want. Multiple TVs? That's an extra $30/mo for three more TVs (but I can do that one for less if I want a "minibox" for one or more of the others -- it would definitely work on one of them).
So, when it's all said and done, not much savings at all -- although it does look like we'd be getting more channels and probably better WiFi than what we have now.

To me, Schitts Creek is just a time killer. OK but nothing special.

first 3 seasons-excellent, season 4-good/excellent, then started to trail off. keri russell worth the watch alone. if i were in the way of the russians, keri russell lures me in first episode and i'm done-what a way to go though, eyn'a? new meaning to downward facing dog ;) the ending, just as ozark was a fizzle imho. both definitely worth the watch though
i thought stan character and "john-boy" as frank gaad(god,really?) were mis-cast. noah emmerich was kinda douchy. so many others coulda done better, but probably a money thing

Americans noticeably trailed off the last two seasons. I think they did a poor job of developing characters with both kids and Stan. Sometimes these series are better to be two or three seasons then extending them longer, but what are you going to do?
Good news is Season 4 of Fargo is apparently going to be airing in 2020. With Chris Rock as the lead? Well OK. I was skeptical of Ted Danson in Season 2, but his character was awesome.

I’m not a fan of straight-up horror but mix in some comedy and good acting, and it’s serviceable entertainment. My wife is a big Drew Barrymore fan, so she’s more into that I am (even though I’m a couple episodes ahead).
I watched a few episodes and liked it enough - but it wasn’t enough to hook me. Drew is really good. I started watching for Olyphant after watching Justified and Deadwood. Love him. It is a strange part for him and he is fine.

I watched a few episodes and liked it enough - but it wasn’t enough to hook me. Drew is really good. I started watching for Olyphant after watching Justified and Deadwood. Love him. It is a strange part for him and he is fine.
Chemistry gets much better later on. That’s probably what’s kept me around.

Generally a very good show, although as is often the case it's better in the earlier seasons.

We’ve been using Amazon Prime for HBO and happy with that side benefit (we would use Prime even w/o HBO, so it really is a plus and means we don’t have to get HBO the old fashioned way)
When I bring up GOT on Prime, it says that you have to pay $14.99 additional per month if you don't have a subscription elsewhere.

You got that right about the trio. In an era where there are few "supernights" for TV, that was something.
My wife and I just started watching Chernobyl. Only saw episode 1 so far. Once we got past the British accents, we thought it looked like it will be worth watching another couple episodes to see if it's something we'll stick with.

I have never done more of a 180 on an actor than I have on Bill Hader in Barry. Truly great performance. Also Noho Hank might be my favorite supporting character of any show in a long time.

She said authorities just burst in the school and forced everyone to take iodine pills with no explanation. She said it was a tough winter because later on everyone was told they could not eat the food from their gardens because they were likely contaminated from radiation. Poles are meticulous on their gardens and this was unthinkable.

I'm not a big Twitter guy but this thread is fascinating as he basically talks about everything the series is getting right. For example, he noted that in one shot the thermos on a desk was actually made in the Soviet Union (he mostly does screenshots then analyzes them for accuracy and historical context). Amazing attention to detail in the show, similar to Mad Men.
In reality, it was the Chernobyl disaster that killed the USSR. The financial costs bankrupted the country more than the arms race ever did.
And, if you want to balance out the depressing feelings you get from watching Chernobyl, my wife and I just finished "Dead to Me" on Netflix. Kelly Bundy has aged well.

Interesting statement. Not sure I agree or disagree. I enjoyed Dr. Farmer’s Soviet Poli Sci class at MU and wish he was still around to opine on that. Chernobyl has been interesting to watch, even with the large latitudes the director has taken with the story (for example, the female scientist interviewing the victims in the hospital is an imaginary character). The costs to clean up were enormous and remain so, but their economy was already in tatters for a number of other reasons. Maybe it was the final straw to break the back of the camel?

I do the Amazon 7-Day Trial every couple of months. Started on Friday, got caught up on Chernobyl and through most of Barry season 2. I'll hopefully complete those two and the last season of Crashing before cancelling on Friday.

Previous post got me thinking, I now have what I think is a fun little challenge/game for those in this thread.
My wife is scheduled to have our second kid on the 12th (if the woman is cool with it, scheduled C-Sections are the best) and I will have two weeks of paternity (will have two more weeks later in the year but more on that in a bit) to do the parenting thing while not working. Our son will be in daycare M-F as is typical to keep things as normal for him as possible, plus let us figure out this new born thing all over again.
So having said all that, we'll have 7 days while we're both off that we can watch whatever during the day when our son is at daycare. So what should be on the binge list? Here are the perimeters: Has to be on Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Hulu with Ads. It can't be too Sci-fi cause my wife won't go for it. Can't be some huge morality narrative because I don't care, just want to be entertained not preached at.
Already on the list is Season 5 of Breaking Bad (I know, I know). Might advocate for something like Deadwood. Going to try to talk the wife into Catch-22 on Hulu. I'd welcome any other thoughts.
Side challenge, in September I'll have another two weeks off when my wife goes back to work where I'll hang with the daughter. Deadwood is one of the more unique great shows HBO has ever aired. As Lloyds alluded to, there is a Shakespearean poetry feel to much (if not most) of the dialogue. It also is extremely profanity-filled and violent, and sexual abuse is prevalent. Aside from the cursing, most of the bad stuff is central to the plot lines and therefore not gratuitous IMHO, but these are reasons many have not liked the show.
The very talented Ian McShane as Swearengen is one of the great characters in TV history, IMHO, and there are many more fine acting performances, too. But again, it's not for everybody.
If you do decide to give it a try, watch at least 3 episodes before you decide if it is or isn't for you.

Agree about her, LL. I guess they put her in there mainly so Trixie can deliver the message to her that she did, but otherwise there wasn't much use for her character.
A lot of air time for Trixie, BTW. Her outstanding work in Ray Donovan and some other projects no doubt lifted her profile in the eyes of Milch and HBO. She was very good, as always.

If you're finishing Breaking Bad I would suggest Better Call Saul. I am a big fan of the show.

Try Animal Kingdom on Amazon. Very entertaining crime/family dynamics show.
3rd season just came out so there is enough to last for a week or so bingeing.

It was more than the cost too. It was the straw that broke the camel’s back in terms of the public finally realizing they couldn’t trust their government with the Politboro’s response to the danger to the public. Gorbachev mention Chernobyl as bring the biggest contributor to the fall.

No one thing brought down the Soviet Union. Chernobyl certainly exposed the propagandist nature of the Politburo and allowed exposure of the dire fiscal state of the empire. A fiscal state arrived thanks to things like the space race, the arms race, and Chernobyl

I believe that in the postscript they showed after the final scene, it said that she represented all of the nuclear physicists who rallied to get the USSR to make their nuclear plants safer, not just the females.

Barry S2 - incredible. There’s three brilliant episodes, the rest are good. NoHo Hank cannot be understated enough, Winkler acted his ass off. Hader directed those three episodes as well, even better.

I'm 3/4 of the way through "When They See Us." I'd seen Ken Burns' documentary in 2012 so I had significant knowledge of the case but this does more to focus on the families of the wrongly accused young men. Very well done show.

This is one of my all-time favorite shows, so I'm a little sad to see it go. However, I've been saying since the first season that I hope that the network will allow the writers to "finish" the show, and not just cancel it at some point with no real conclusion. So, despite being disappointed, I am very happy that the show's creators have opted to wrap things up rather than just pumping out new episodes until they get cancelled.

Agreed, trying to drag that show along would betray exactly what it is. Some of the smartest TV writing I've seen. The Trolley problem episode is one of my favorite episodes of TV period.

I haven't kept up on this thread so apologies if any of these are repeats. I watched "When They See Us." Pretty powerful, at times hard to watch. I thought the actor who played Korey was great.
I watch America's Got Talent ever year. Always pretty good.
Was just searching through Hulu and came upon "The Looming Tower" about events that led to 9/11 and the rift between the CIA and the FBI. I'm about half way through it and have found it very interesting and well done.

I haven't kept up on this thread so apologies if any of these are repeats. I watched "When They See Us." Pretty powerful, at times hard to watch. I thought the actor who played Korey was great.
I watch America's Got Talent ever year. Always pretty good.
Was just searching through Hulu and came upon "The Looming Tower" about events that led to 9/11 and the rift between the CIA and the FBI. I'm about half way through it and have found it very interesting and well done.
I watch AGT as well, but it is wearing thin with me. It's not enough that people are talented. They also have to be poor, disabled, orphaned, or some combo of the above.
Also, I am getting a little tired of the obvious ringers. If anyone comes on that show that has a foreign accent, I can guarantee you that they are either a winner or high finisher on another country's version of the show. I wouldn't even mind if they were up front about it, but they all show up acting like they have never performed in front of an audience before, when you can search YouTube and find them in a clip from "Bulgaria's Got Talent".

animal kingdom, 4th season. but i wait until it's on amazon prime(free) i f' ing hate commercials. the acting isn't always the best, but the storyline kinda grabs ya and pulls ya in. one thing that really got my attention was how graphic the sex was. yeah right, well, what i mean is, this isn't hbo. this is on regular tv(tnt) it's essentially softcore porn. now before ya'll think i'm being too virtuous, i haven't watched one milli-second of game of thrones. i'm not complaining, but just in awe of how far they've been able to push the envelope

As previously mentioned, Mrs. 82 and I have been enjoying season 3 of Stranger Things.
We can't help but laugh that they show a warning at the start of each episode that the strobe lights might cause seizures, but that there is absolutely no warning about the grisly, gruesome, bodies literally exploding violence in each episode.

Good first episode of Stranger Things. Will probably take us 2-3 weeks to get through it all.
Fleabag was great. Just watched it all and Phoebe Waller-Bridge is fantastic. Her mannerisms, the expressiveness of her face, I can't exactly place what it is about her but she's an incredibly charming, engaging actress. Would love to see her in more stuff.

Pete's walk away down the beach at the end can mean the end of the series...
(I just looked it up; series cancelled.) Also, the reason all the characters wound up in CA was a $9million tax credit!
Finally, the Ricky Jay tribute is not particularly well done (though it was a nice touch to have Mark Singer in there- he wrote the 1993 profile of Jay in The New Yorker--I remember reading that at the time and becoming somewhat obsessed with him; lots of good stuff on YouTube). I did notice that he must have died before the last episode--you never see his face, only the back of his head from a distance. His death resulted in some serious re-writing of the last con scene.

I am halfway through. Riveting but yes, not easy to watch.
My favorite line so far was in Ep. 2: "Sometimes you gotta ask yourself, 'When is the white man gonna get a break in this country?'"

Barry S2 - incredible. There’s three brilliant episodes, the rest are good. NoHo Hank cannot be understated enough, Winkler acted his ass off. Hader directed those three episodes as well, even better.
Made my way through the first season last week, and have a few more of S2 to go.
NoHo Hank might be my favorite character on any show right now.

I'm not finished with season three yet (four more to go) but I have loved the increased spotlight on other characters. Nancy, Steve, Robin, the acting for those three characters has been phenomenal.

Not always easy to watch, but a story well told. The four 1-hour episodes go quickly.

I wouldn't presume that someone to even have a heart to fill with hate.
For those of us who were coming of age in the NYC metro when the Central Park 5 situation occurred it's always a touchstone for your life experiences. But projects like this one on Netflix (and the Ken Burns documentary) are important since they expand the awareness bubble at such a high rate. Society needs to be better informed.

I saw the documentary in a theatre. At the end people just sat around and started discussing the movie. It’s that powerful. The Netflix is also powerful and will anger you.
Just finished episode 2 of Last Chance U. Doing my best to avoid anything online to indicate how things turn out. I will say that I didn’t think there would be a bigger a-hole than Buddy Stephens but Jason Brown proved me wrong.

I'm finally back home and started watching last night - 1st 2 episodes. Absolutely riveting. Didn't start watching until almost midnight and it was hard to turn if off at 2 am after 2 episodes.
Sadly, this kind of thing goes on all of the time for minorities.

I agree with this, if someone watched the first two episodes and gave up or wasn't interested, I totally get it. This show builds up and then goes from 0-60 by episode four of season one.

They are all reality shows, I'd probably pick for the general masses one of the Below Decks, simply because you get a mix of worker folks + stupid rich people + beautiful scenery + yachting spiciness.
Vanderpump is probably the most satisfying show for me but it'd be a tough to jump in now because there is like 7 years of insanity that gets referenced all the time and it'd be hard to follow
Southern Charm might be interesting for you because it really captures some of the culture mismatch that is Charleston(southern) high society versus your typical person and it's an easy watch. I love it in part because Charleston is a top 5 place for me to visit in the continental US(been at least a dozen times).

My 16 year old just this week made my wife and I watch Derry Girls with her on Netflix. I must say I found my self burst out laughing multiple times. Very funny. 6-episode seasons and they are like 1/2 hour long episodes.

There has been serious conjecture that the show "16 and Pregnant" was a factor in the decline in the teen birth rate. It shows how much being a teenage mother really sucks: missing prom, not being able to go away to college, having a baby daddy who is a mouth-breathing loser who cheats on you and doesn't help with the baby, financially or otherwise, etc.
The "Teen Mom" shows, on the other hand, are trash. A bunch of 23-year-olds that are getting $250k+/year for appearing on the show and doing nothing with their lives except making more babies and buying sports cars and pets that crap all over their nice houses.

Over the decades (centuries? millennia?) So many things have been declared to be the "ruination of society." But yes, agree, reality TV is the ruination of society!

My wife and I just finished the final season of Orange Is The New Black.
Overall, I thought the series was OK. At its best moments, it was very good, but it was uneven IMHO. So many of the scenes and situations were so over the top dopey that it sometimes made it difficult to believe the more serious points the show was trying to make. My wife liked the show, and she sometimes watches programs I like more than she does, so I took one for the team.
The final season also was OK. The theme was extremely political, focused mostly on the immigration issue. The writers and director definitely had an agenda. Those on one side of the aisle probably liked it more than those on the other.
What the show often had were some outstanding individual acting performances, and this final season was no different. I thought the two who really stood out were Danielle Brooks as Tasha "Taystee" Jefferson and a newcomer, Karina Arroyave, who played undocumented immigrant Karla Cordova.
The latter actress was especially impressive. It was not an easy role, and she played it courageously. I'm not ashamed to admit that the scene in which she tells her sons goodbye via telephone actually brought a tear to my eye. Several tears, in fact.

Has anybody seen “Top Boy:Summerhouse” on Netflix? Think of it as the BBC’s version of the Wire. There are only two seasons (and for the BBC each season is only 4 to 6 shows).
Pretty sure the two season originally aired around 2012/2013.
Definitely binge worthy.
I read that the response was so positive Netflix actually renewed it for a third season that will debut this fall.

Just finished Season 2. Last half focused on the Atlanta Child murders. As someone who lived relatively close to Atlanta at the time, it was very interesting.

Wu Assassins on Netflix is decent. Love Iko Uwais in the Raid movies, Headshot, The Night Comes for Us, but this was just okay. Confusing plot, solid action, but slow at times.

It's interesting to see the commentary around Dave Chappelle and his latest stand-ups. He's seemingly turning the outrage culture on it's head a little bit and his focus seems to be re-establishing that comedians by design are envelope pushers and that means in all directions not just the "accepted" directions.

Dave Chappelle is fearless. His Blind White Supremacist sketch was on of the most brilliant comedy pieces I have ever seen. And I am not sure it could play on basic cable these days.

Strictly on his portrayals of both Clayton Bigsby and Prince, I do hope Chappelle is some day universally recognized for the comedic genius he is.

Binged Succession up to date. Really, really good show. Two complaints, first being the piano theme music is totally overplayed during the show. Second, the lack of framing the series in a sense of time.
Righteous Gemstones is good, but it seems like every episode is building into something great then falls short of really delivering.

The whole thing with the child murders was very well done. I'm interested to see where season three goes and if there's more emphasis on BTK. My favorite part of season one was the inmate interviews. The Son of Sam one was brilliant this season. I just hope season three doesn't take two years to be released.

Strictly on his portrayals of both Clayton Bigsby and Prince, I do hope Chappelle is some day universally recognized for the comedic genius he is.
I recently listened to Jim Gaffigan on Joe Rogan’s Podcast. The two of them spoke about Chappelle with awe. Both agreed that he is a rare genius. I’ve heard Rogan talk about a lot of comedians. I’ve never heard him speak about anyone in those terms.

Watched Rebellion on Netflix. Saw the first season when it was a mini-series on History Channel(Easter Uprising) and now there is a second season with some of the same characters involved centered on the action leading up to the peace treaty.....I'm guessing there will be a 3rd season that focuses on the Irish Civil War.
Very solid show that definitely had some twists and turns I didn't see coming.

He most certainly doesn’t appeal to cancel culture, which is the whole point of why I loved this special. How insane it has gotten. I worded it poorly. Let’s try it this way. In his shows he will talk about his disdain for certain people, shall we say, policy makers. He will also talk about his bromance with one particular person. That’s fine, his right. Many other supporters of those stances are on the cancel culture crusade....he is not. Hopefully that clears it up.

Started Carnival Row on Amazon Prime. So far I find the world interesting, but am not sold that I love it just yet. Bloom and Delavigne are fine...I don't know, I just don't get into her acting. She comes off as somewhat flat and not very charismatic to me...like ever. Maybe those are just the roles she gets. I'll finish the first season to see how the storyline pans out, but not as engaged as some other shows.
Also rewatching Breaking Bad now. The first season doesn't feel as slow-paced the second time through. I remember feeling like the guy in the basement, Walt in class, all those moments just seemed to drag. Second time through it feels faster-paced. Not sure why, I would think the opposite would've been true.

Watched the pilot for Euphoria. Don't think I'll continue. Very difficult to watch (with good acting and interesting direction and tone). While I don't *believe* it accurately depicts HS life in 98% of the country, just in case I am wrong I am glad that my kids are well past HS.

Yep, she was great in a limited role in Justified, that's for sure.

Watched the whole season. There were a couple of times I asked myself, out loud, Why are you still watching this? It was mostly depressing. But, as you say, the acting was good and it was strangely compelling to watch the various meltdowns.

I was happy to see Julia Garner win best supporting actress Emmy for her portrayal of Ruth on Ozark. Totally stole the show this past season.
She deserved it totally, and she probably was helped by the 4 GoT actresses splitting the vote.
I thought Ozark or Succession deserved best drama, but the fix was totally in for GoT.
Chernobyl and When They See Us were properly recognized IMHO. Two of the best things I saw on TV during the nomination period.

Agreed. Season two seemed to stretch itself a little thin trying to make every character have significant plot points when you only need 2-4 really strong ones, but she's always been really solid.

Five episodes into The Boys. So much fun. There was an absolute laugh-out-loud-even-though-I-was-alone scene in each of the past two episodes (4 and 5).
Obviously, it's superheroes, so a lot of it is ridiculous. But I LOVE the whole supes-gone-wrong idea for the series. Brilliant. Plus a lot of eff-yous to those who take extreme views on many things.

I'm surprised Billions didn't garner any Emmy attention at all. Honestly, I think it's because they don't know how to handle nominating Asia Kate Dillon, who is delivering one of the best performances on television. So rather than address their nomination, the Emmys just pretend the show doesn't exist.

Interesting. I "like" Sarah Snook's character (Shiv) a lot. I get a kick out of Kieran Culkin's (Roman) and Nicholas Braun's (Greg) characters. And I think the acting overall and writing are very good.
But I do get what you're saying, brewski, because there have been series I have felt that way about. It's a good thing for both of us that there are about 6 bajillion series to choose from!

Even better -- if you're watching on a tablet -- is the X-Ray trivia that comes up during that scene.
I finished the series last night... that was hands-down the best cliffhanger I've seen in recent memory. Not just the "what happens next" angle, but equally the "what the hell is going on" angle. I never read the comic, so maybe there's some canon that explains, but the three character arcs on-screen could go in at least a dozen different directions.

I'm a bit late to the party, but I discovered (and watched) "The Barkley Marathons" documentary on Prime this weekend (original release was 2014)... as a deposed, nationally-reputed Hash House Harrier RA living in self-exile, I have a keen interest in runners who don't take themselves seriously all the while making Olympic marathoners and Navy Seals look lazy and out-of-shape.
WARNING: If you can recite your last five Ironman, marathon, half-marathon and/or 10K finish times from memory, DO NOT WATCH this documentary as it will only act to deplete your perceived purpose in life and sense of self-being to absolute zero. I repeat, unless you are run for any purpose other than to find beer, watching The Barkley Marathons is roughly equivalent to a 5 year-old boy screening The Joker by himself in a dark theater.

Wow, CT. This sounds exactly like the post I was going to write. I never made it even half way through Chappelle. When you say "I also like Burr and while I didn't think his recent special was his best work", that is basically word for word what I was thinking.
The Great Depresh on HBO is head and shoulders over what Chappelle and Burr did.
Be funny, be clever, or be insightful. I thought Chappelle and Burr failed at all three.

Been watching Ray Donovan since it started. The situations get ridiculous sometimes, but in general we really like it. Very good acting overall, especially the Mickey and Bunchy characters. Liev overacts sometimes, but he's obviously talented.

Yeah, that’s some next level smart writing. When I saw Greg get on the helicopter with Kendall, I thought they were working together. The entire Greg/Kendall dynamic this season takes on an interesting meaning when you look back on the season now.
Add in that E9, all three kids hit home runs, then Shiv and Rome get soft (saving Tom and asking about being able to talk about things), Kendall was low key. I feel like we got robbed not getting to see Gregory's testimony, hoping that's a featurette one day.

I’ve handled the Showtime relationship for years, been in on both shows since the start along with Shameless and others. Had the fortune of meeting cast members. Fun people, great shows.

And frankly it was a total setup by Logan. He knows the only way the proxy vote is going his way is if he is gone. And the only way that is going to happen is if he sets it up, as he did. He knew/hoped Kendall had the gumption to do what he did. It was part of the reason he paid Kendall's gal no attention. He wanted to piss of Kendall. I think Logan has it all going on and drove the bus...the talk about not having the ability to go for the kill, etc....

This was my reaction, too. They really focused on Logan's face as the episode ended and Ken was finishing his statement. He certainly didn't look upset -- and we all know he could get freakin' upset -- and I thought I might have detected the slightest hint of a smile/smirk.
Just a really well-done series. I love Shiv, but most of the characters are great. Culkin, whom I had never before taken seriously as an actor, is quite good as Roman. Some of them are painful to watch, specifically Tom and Greg, but they are supposed to be painful to watch. Even the smaller, supporting characters are good.
I laughed out loud when Logan asked Roman how he was doing after he basically was held hostage at a hotel in Turkey, and Roman responded: "I've had worse experiences at hotels. I once stayed at a Marriott."

El Camino was fine. A nice long episode. Glad I watched. Didn’t need it.

Also, RIP Robert Forster. Very underrated and underused actor. His scene in El Camino is terrific.

I'd agree with that. A little too much screen time for the Hormone Monsters for me. And way too much Coach Steve -- though so far in Season 3 (I haven't finished the season yet), he's had a lot less air time, which is good.
It's a clever show, and I do chuckle quite a lot. Which is why I keep watching even though I don't like it as much as I did. I felt kind of the same about Bojack Horseman -- really cracked me up first couple seasons, less so after that, but still liked it.

This was my reaction, too. They really focused on Logan's face as the episode ended and Ken was finishing his statement. He certainly didn't look upset -- and we all know he could get freakin' upset -- and I thought I might have detected the slightest hint of a smile/smirk.

My initial thought was the latter, based on Logan having told Ken, "You're not a killer," and Ken then delivering that classic kiss on the cheek.
But I don't dismiss the possibility that it was the former.
Either way, I hadn't expected it, and I love when something I watch produces a legit plot turn that isn't just a stupid, illogical, shock-value kind of thing.
Succession is just a very enjoyable series.

Very thorough (for the time allotted for each episode) look at a given topic and provides multiple perspectives without editorializing or pushing an agenda (especially refreshing for some of the politically-charged topics). Right now it's the middle of Season 2, so new episodes are being dropped every week.
I highly recommend the "Why Women are Paid Less" episode, especially for the new (and expecting) fathers out there (then you can watch "The Female Orgasm" episode). Other episodes I recommend: "Why Diets Fail," "Racial Wealth Gap," and "Cults."
After watching that last one, go over to Documentary Now (also Netflix) and watch the episode "Batsh|t Crazy."

Finally saw Joker a few days ago. For those interested in seeing it but haven't yet, I won't go into the many plot twists (and holes). What I will do is agree with most critics that Phoenix is absolutely amazing in pretty much every scene. I didn't love, love, love the movie, but I did like it.
Having seen it, and then having read more about it (I don't like to read about something I want to see because of unintentional spoilers that happen sometimes), I was intrigued to see Taxi Driver. Todd Phillips, who directed Joker, apparently was inspired by Scorsese in general and Taxi Driver in particular. And somehow, I had never seen Taxi Driver -- either when it hit the theaters in 1976 or in the bazillion times it has been shown on TV since.
So when my wife and I were flipping around Netflix looking for something to watch last night -- yep, another wild night at the 82 house! -- and I saw Taxi Driver available, I convinced her to watch it.
It was quite dated, but it was fun to see a very young DeNiro, as well as Cybill Shepherd, Harvey Keitel, Peter Boyle and Albert Brooks in supporting roles. DeNiro was brilliant (though not as much as Phoenix in Joker IMHO). Foster got nominated for an Oscar even though she wasn't on the screen much, I'm assuming because her role was controversial and was the most talked-about at the time.
It was heavy on the conversation and very light on much happening for long stretches, and the music was extremely annoying (even though it was nominated for an Oscar). Loved all the scenes of a very decadent mid-70s NYC.
There have been critics who have called it the best movie ever. When I mentioned that to my wife, she literally laughed out loud and said: "Really? It's not in my top 1,000." For sure IMHO it wasn't even the best Scorcese-DeNiro collaboration of that half-decade -- Raging Bull was far superior.
Oh ... and yes, I absolutely did see how Taxi Driver influenced Phillips' making of Joker.
So there you have it -- a review of a 1976 flick. Seriously, I thought that maybe some folks might have somehow missed it, as was the case with me, and might wonder if they should bother checking it out.

I watched the 1st episode. Not much to say yet as it was mainly just setting the story. I will probably wait til it is done and then binge.
I finally was home long enough this week to watch season 2 of Succession. It is simply the best show on TV.And the last couple episodes of each season are as good as TV gets. Ever.
GoT would have a few slow episodes every year while filling in background or laying groundwork for future episodes. Every single episode of Succession has been outstanding and each episode gets better.

Burrow, it's interesting that you mention Lindelof. When I saw he was involved, it dampened my enthusiasm. I lost interest in The Leftovers by the middle of season 2 and the way he paced the show had everything to do with it.
I watched the 1st episode of Watchmen and saw similarities right away. I will watch the rest of season 1 when I can binge it in a couple of months. Hoping I am not disappointed.

I strongly recommend reading the original. I think it makes the movie better because it was a fairly faithful adoration and it fills in many of the blanks. Having read it first decades ago, I've always felt it's the best piece of comic presentation I've ever read.

I taped all of "Country Music" and am working my way through it.
Like everything else Ken Burns has done, it is excellent. You don't even have to be a country music fan to find it interesting.
I have found one error so far, and it is my Milwaukee connection that allowed me to figure it out, not the fact that I grew up in Nashville. There are several mentions of a husband and wife songwriting team that is responsible for many hits, including most of the Everly Brothers'. They met when she worked at the Schroeder Hotel (it was later the Marc Plaza and the now the Hilton) and he was a guest, and the narrator pronounced "Schroeder" iwith a long "O", like the Peanuts character.

How's everyone feeling about the Midway "remake"? I say remake because they are acting like the Charleton Heston vehicle never existed ( it had Eric Estrada for god sake) despite at least a few shots being a direct lift from that movie (like Ensign Gay watching the Japanese carriers burn).
I really love WWII movies but I'm terrified that they are trying to jam the Pearly Harbor attack as well as the Doolittle raid into a movie that could be solely about Midway

Putting Mandalorian on the list seems forced... I inevitably end up watching anything in Star Wars canon but it's not always an in-the-theater must-see for me.
I'm really torn on Top Gun Maverick. On one hand, it was Top Gun that was the initial spark that inspired me to take the ASTB, not to mention the movie that sparked my interest in beach volleyball*, but the whole Tom Cruise/Scientology thing really weirds me out, so I'm not sure if that's going to be a theater or AppleTV purchase.
I've been a big fan of Ryan Reynolds since I declared he would be a big star someday after watching Van Wilder (a/k/a Ferris Bueller for Millennials)... I'm very proud of that prognostication, and even if it's a self-fulfilling prophecy, it hasn't yet steered me wrong. Hopefully Michael Bay doesn't miss the mark with this movie... that's the only thing that would make this suck.
* I never bought into the "homoerotic undertone" agenda that some people insist on pushing... however, when they remade that scene in the Hulu series Future Man (using two openly gay characters, one ambiguous, and one pansexual from the future), it was so well made that I honestly couldn't sit here today and tell you if it was parody or homage. Nevertheless, beach volleyball is awesome, and that should be the only takeaway here (other than perhaps "I should check out that Future Man series sometime").

I will say, if you want something he would probably enjoy and you wont want to pull your hair out, the Imagineering Story is awesome.

Season 1 of Parks & Rec is truly forgettable. Final season is fine but more enjoyable if you've watched all the way through (lots of callbacks to earlier episodes).

If you've not yet seen Booksmart, do it. Watched it on a flight for the second time last week. Just hysterical.
Big fan of British tv. On Netflix, Man Like Mobeen is hysterical Only 2 seasons and a couple of episodes so you can work through it quickly. Guz Khan is a true comedic talent.
Top Boy, also on Netflix, fantastic if you liked the wire. Go back and watch original series from about 7-8 years ago, and then watch the new season released a month ago. Even more impressive given a lot of the main characters are prominent UK hip hop artists, not actors, which makes the performances all the more impressive.

Season 1 of Parks & Rec is truly forgettable. Final season is fine but more enjoyable if you've watched all the way through (lots of callbacks to earlier episodes).

I actually started watching Season 1 the summer before last. I only watched an episode or two before getting distracted. But my youngest is very persistent and she promised me it would get better. So I picked it up again and after getting past the first few, started enjoying it a lot more. Last night I saw "Sister City", "Kaboom" and "Grek Pikitis" (S2E5-7) and thought they were really good. So many people have told me that it picks up later in S2 that I'm really looking forward to it.

At my youngest daughter's persistent urging, my wife and I finally got around to starting Parks and Recreation a couple weeks ago. We're about 12 episodes in -- about 1/3 of they way through season 2. I watched three episodes last night and laughed out loud quite a few times. I'm enjoying it, and have heard that starting at the end of the second season it really starts picking up steam.
My 16 year old has probably watched the entire series multiple times.

Very interesting to see where the series goes and glad to hear they are already filming a season 2.....if the rest of the reason is as good as the first episode this will go a long way toward restoring my faith in Lucasfilm after the disaster that was TLJ.

Mrs. Fletcher on HBO ... what a weird show. I don't think I "hate" it yet, but I'm not sure if I "like" it, either. Have seen the first 2 episodes and will give it a shot by watching a couple more. Then we'll see.

Trust me, it was easy because it was chat. I went to all my meetings, etc, this was just in the background....9 total hours before the audible on chat came on, I was lucky to be by my computer. Spoke to friends at Disney today and they said it was an absolute shat show from the Customer service perspective.
That said, 10 million subs, stock up a bunch today to $144. I will be very curious to see their churn profile on this product. For kids it is great. For adults, the avail content will be burned through fairly quickly based on current offering.

Like every other Matt Groening creation, this one also gets exponentially better each time you watch it.

Half way through season 2 myself....I can see the rushed argument but I still think it's quality television. I would love this season to be twice as long and be a little more slow burn but I think it really does a good job of capturing Clancy's version of Jack Ryan. I do think some of the background info needs to be better articulated because I'm not sure that the general viewing public is well versed in who the KSK or BND are (as an example).
I wonder how many people read the Jack Ryan books versus just watching the show and where their hate/love falls.
Side note, I'm still patiently waiting for a movie and/or tv series adaptation of Red Storm Rising.

Isn't change the thing that is supposed to happen, especially as technology evolves? Eventually, Netflix will run its course. Same with Apple +.
When the automobile was invented replacing horses, there was not one company that established order. There were dozens. Eventually it was sorted out. After it was sorted out, the changes continued over the years up until now. The delivery systems for TV will continue to change as well. And that is a good thing.
Cable (with internet) cost me $225 a month just 2 years ago. With YTTV, Netflix, Prime, HULU, and HBO, the cost goes down to less than $120. I can watch all the channels I watched before at a little over 1/2 the price. And, I expect over the next few years, I will make more changes. It's the nature of the beast.
So, I would contest your statement that we are right back to where we were. With cable, we had only one option. Today we have many. In the future, some of those options will remain; others will be gone - replaced by newer options.
I realize that you know this and were just making a flippant statement. So, this isn't an attempt to start an argument.

Perhaps, but at least not under the previous model... frankly, I see this as forcing the cable companies into an a la carte structure over time that will allow people to assemble their own "custom" bundles rather than have to pick from a handful of "forced" bundle options.
Otherwise, someone is going to figure this out and basically set up shop as an aggregator - basically an independent insurance sales agent... tell them what you need, and they will go out and put together a couple options for you to choose from. You pay one bill to the aggregator who in turn pays the OTA's, so the consumer has one bill but multiple subscriptions.

The programmers mandate this. Disney owns Nat Geo, Disney Channel, Free Form, ESPN, etc Etc...they force that all be sold together. So the distributors are forced into an impossible situation of dropping them...lose subs...carry them all and everyone's rates go up to cover the costs.
So now you see DTC model, which is blissing customers off because they want it all in one place...but until the studios and programmers start selling it one by one, it will not happen. Part of it is political because some of these channels simply would not survive on their own. Try telling that to Congress when such and such channel that brings programming for such and such constituency cannot survive on its own...gets very messy quickly.

If so, that sets up perfectly to start from the beginning of S1-S3 on Netflix, and be able to watch (or record) S4 starting the week after next.
And if you decide to start watching this show, start with S1E1 and watch it in order.

Burrow, it's interesting that you mention Lindelof. When I saw he was involved, it dampened my enthusiasm. I lost interest in The Leftovers by the middle of season 2 and the way he paced the show had everything to do with it.
I watched the 1st episode of Watchmen and saw similarities right away. I will watch the rest of season 1 when I can binge it in a couple of months. Hoping I am not disappointed.
Quick bump on this - I'm biased in favor of wanting to like the Watchmen because I absolutely loved The Leftovers - probably one of my favorite pieces of TV ever. It definitely got pretty out there, but in a way I liked (and if I'm being honest, probably started feeling invested in liking).
That being said, I'm putting The Watchmen on hold and I'm going to crash-read the novel. I watched the first couple episodes, and between finding it hard to get invested in the universe and seeing all the commentary from other nerd-connoisseurs say that the added context of the novel helps a lot, I'm going to read it then binge the first season of the show.

Can't believe it's Riley. She's awful (well, for the most part). It looks like perhaps Brian gets on Riley and makes Court cry. That would be upsetting yet good for me (so I still have a shot with Court).

It's not a comedy, but give The Crown a try. Like you, I watch a lot of dark series and occasionally, I just need a break.
The Crown is as well written and acted as any show on TV. It really gives a different perspective on the kingin' and queenin' thing.

I love it. Closest thing they've put out in tone and scope of the OT since the OT.

I thought the first scene in episode one was damn close to perfect. I enjoyed the rest and the second episode, but couldn’t figure out why he just didn’t fly and land closer to his destination.
I like the grittiness of it, Rogue One is also my favorite Star Wars movie though, so I enjoy the non Skywalker focused stories.

Light might not be the right word, but it is a soap opera interpersonal relationship show. No violence; not raunchy (not that all women dislike watching violent and/or raunchy shows and visa versa). Potentially good couple viewing. I liked the first season twists and turns well enough. 2nd season IMO is simplistic and predictable.
But we now have the Crown again.

Has anyone seen 'What We Do in the Shadows' on Hulu? I haven't seen the movie but the show is very funny.
The show is funny. The movie is 100x better. Seriously one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Probably the absolute peak of the mockumentary format so far. Taika Waititi is a genius.
As far as The Mandalorian, I really wanted to wait and binge it once it was all out, but social media has made that impossible. Even trying to avoid them, it felt like there were spoilers everywhere. Really like the show two episodes in.

It's so good. So, so good. My wife discovered it on some 1 am movie channel and told me I had to watch it. It's brilliant.
I've been watching Watchmen on HBO. Cautiously at first, because I think of the original comic book series as gospel. I was skeptical they could pull it off, but I'm really impressed. Sister Knight and Looking Glass in particular are the kind of characters that fit perfectly into Alan Moore's world. I love the way they have mixed the original canon more and more into the framework of the new story. As someone that still reveres my first printings of the 1986 comics, I'm becoming steadily more pleased with the work Damon Lindelof and company have done.

Plenty of tie-ins and am curious how if any will tie-in with the new Star Wars release. Interesting that Disney is doing the one episode a week release thing rather than a whole series dump.
I think helps the pacing of this show in particular, and someone smarter than me probably thinks it helps on the marketing side to build more excitement and potentially new customers to sign on. As the show picks up steam, and without too many spoilers more folks I think are willing to sign up and check it out.
Plus, having an awesome weekly Star Wars show lead up to the release of Episode IX won’t hurt either ;D

I watched the first 3 episodes of The Mandalorian over the weekend. I did enjoy and am hungry for the next episodes. I think it's largely about building "water cooler" buzz that doesn't get generated with a Stranger Things binge. There are at least a handful of podcasts and websites that are pumping out content around an episode by episode discussion of the show that helps raise general visibility.

The Mandalorian is very, VERY good.
Jack Ryan Season 2 was fun.
Carnival Row (through episode 4) has been a fun fantasy ride.
I love the Challenge.
Next up is to finish Carnival Row and then on to Mindhunters. Plus, still gotta finish Ozark S2.

I liked the US/UK concept especially because I really have gotten to the point where I can't stand Cara Maria on the show but yeah the last couple of weeks got somewhat boring just because it was a numbers game and all the annoying people had the numbers.

Don't think I've seen a single episode since Battle of the Exes, and TBH the only reason I turned it on was because of TJ Lavin, dude does a great job. Show just became to cliche reality TV for me, more about the drama than the challenges (don't know if it has changed in the last 5 or so years). Last I heard anything about the show was that Sarah Rice had a miscarriage, and that Diem Brown passed away. Have really had no interest in returning since then.

They brought in some consultants (which included Eric Stein's from Big Brother 8's company) to help change the game play mechanics about 6 or 7 years ago and it really changed it for the better. You should give it a shot again as it's not about the drama as much and more about the game.

Not sure if anyone is interested, but the premium channels (e.g., HBO, Max, etc. -- basically the channels above 1802) are free on U-Verse this weekend. Not sure if they're free for other providers. They do this a couple times per year and I always record a bunch of movies.

Anyone that has HULU, check out Horace and Pete. Louis CK, Steve Buscemi, Edie Falco, Jessica Lange, Alan Alda, plus more.
This show challenges the boundaries on PC. We had discussions earlier about Chapelle and Burr and their challenging of the boundaries, but they seemed very safe in how they did it. This one pushed the boundaries farther.
The camera work is great as well as the show has a feeling of looking more like a play.

Just got finished watching "One Child Nation" on Amazon Prime. Horrific documentary about the One Child Policy in China produced by a woman who was a product of it.
I became interested after I watched "I am Another You" by the Chinese documentarian Nanfu Wang, which was a thought-provoking treatise on the family dynamic on mental illness in the U.S.

The change in movie pacing by decade is so stark when you go back. For me, most 60s and 70s movies, even ones I once loved, now feel unwatchable. The 80s and 90s are easier because I grew up on them, but they don't come close to modern films. I can't imagine what it will look like in another 20 years.

Season 4 of Mr. Robot has been outstanding, the last few episodes in particular.
Sunday night's episode felt like such a series finale I'm curious how they're going to fill 4 more hours.

Thanks for this recommendation. I have a personal connection to this story. My dad was navy at that time in San Diego. We actually lived in the same apartment complex as the gunman and we frequented that McDonald's. My mom says we weren't there at the time of the shooting because she had to change my diaper (i was 7 months old at the time of the shooting)

Never has been (a few scenes in Caddyshack and Vacation aside). Wasn't funny on SNL, and 90% of his movies are trash.
Sadly, I could not watch Community bc of him.

I did know that about about the Ep IV toy line.....but that was accidental versus intentional. GL tried to negotiate additional points on the box office and Fox wouldn't budge so he negotiated ownership of the merch rights which they gave him but because the agreement came so close to the release he didn't get a deal with Kenner until just before the opening. Another example of where GL had a horse shoe up his butt that paid off for him.
I hadn't thought about the Baby Yoda merch being deliberately withheld which actually makes a TON of sense from Disney. It absolutely would have leaked, not sure it would have impacted subscriptions but it is telling that Disney think a Baby Yoda leak out of context would have turned the fan community further against them. Shows me that they don't actually understand the fan community nor the basis of some of the revolts to date. It turns out that if you make true Star Wars content, that the Star Wars people eat it up because I think it's safe to say that The Mandalorian is universally revered at this point.

Then you missed Seasons 5 and 6 for nothing. At least go back and watch the cold open of "G.I. Jeff"... I can assure you there's no Chevy Chase, and the payoff is comedic genius on a level rarely seen... you could watch the payoff 100 times and still laugh hysterically every time (provided you ever watched Saturday morning TV in the 80's).

The toy companies are always the leaks, too many involved there. Makes total sense if they had to keep it a secret.

If Baby Yoda was a thing before the Mando launch, it would have been skewered. They would’ve been wrong, but nonetheless.

After one viewing- somewhere between Casino and the classics: mean streets, Good Fellows, Raging Bull, etc. Didn't like the anti-aging stuff. Liked the way Scorsese used the history of the mob (and the myth of the mob) to illustrate his view of the trajectory of American society from World War 11.
Loved Bobby Cannavale and Stephen Graham.

Wise choice. Often overlooked when discussing iconic HBO shows, but many critics consider it a top-5 show all-time for the network.
Acting outstanding across the board. I especially love Lauren Ambrose as Claire -- perfect portrayal of a late-teens girl. She has since gone on to be a Tony nominated Broadway star.

My oldest daughter got me started on this over the Christmas break. I'll be finishing Season 1 tonight. I'm glad to hear that the second season is still strong. After the first several episodes I was enjoying it, but I was concerned that it would be nothing but a series of "near misses" that would get boring. Then last night my middle daughter and I watched S1E5 (the one with the dinner scene) and then ended up watching E6 and E7 too. It's really a lot of fun. Both Comer and Oh are fantastic.

It's really good. Saw it two weeks ago in an early premier. The cinematography is hard to explain how amazing it is...as if the whole movie was shot with no break. There is only one scene that I recall where it feels like "an edit" was done. It's crazy cool how they shot it.
