Title: Best Voices in Music
Post by: wadesworld on May 16, 2017, 10:52:10 PM
Not asking what your favorite bands or musicians are, just who you think has the best voice in music?

Male - David Gray
Female - Adele

Always did love Amy Lee's voice.

But gotta go w/ Adele on this one.

Gimme Josh Groban for male

all-time or current?

all-time ... consider Freddy Mercury

Worst voice all-time, Bob Dylan

(also I assume we are talking pop/rock so opera stars like Maria Callas, Renee Flemming Enrico Caruso and Luciano Pavarotti are not under consideration ... or are they?)

Lady Gaga when she is just playing piano is fantastic and underrated.  Won't say the best, but a top one in today's era.  Google some of Howard Stern performances.

Her album with Tony Bennett is pretty good too.  Tony Bennett has to be in the conversation for best male voice.

Adele is best female voice but Beyoncé deserves mention too.

Lady Gaga is an easy choice for female.

Going to go with Thom Yorke for male, but Bowie is right there.

Wow, is this a tough thing to determine. I think people are going to gravitate toward the most powerful voice or the one that can generate the most flourishes. Not saying that's the wrong way to look at it, but it can't be in a vacuum IMO it has  to account for what they did with it to generate music. My brother has perfect picture and a strong voice but he ain't done $hit with it so he doesn't count...nawwhatimsayin?

I'm put someone like Otis Redding up there along with Freddie Mercury on the male side.

On the female side, if it's current, I say Gaga simply because she has way more stylistic range than someone like Beyonce or Adele. All time though would be someone like Aretha Franklin or Whitney Houston (pre-coke)

I always thought Burton Cummings (The Guess Who) had a cool voice.

For the ladies, my first thought was Aretha. Alicia Keys is another good one I don't think anyone has mentioned yet.

You mean Whitney before Bobby got her hooked on crack. If you have seen any clips of her trying to sing in her last couple of years, it is really tragic.

Obviously.  Michael Jordan played for the Wizards but his time with the Bulls is what everyone talks about when discussing his greatness.

Linda Ronstadt was first female name that popped into my head.  Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey have/had great voices, but Linda Ronstadt sang the damn song instead of doing the vocal Olympics.  I think Christina Aguilera (another vocal gymnast) may have the best current voice, but I'm not a fan of most of her music.

I like Rob Thomas' voice. Roger Daltrey back in the day was great.  Agree with those who said Roy Orbison.

Thom Yorke and Aaron Lewis (sadly, most of his music is bad, but GD that voice of his) on the male side.

On the women's side, Adele and Polly Jean Harvey.

I really like Adele's voice, so she is the first one that comes to mind of current singers.  I also like Sia, and was a little surprised to not see her here.  In my mind, pre-crack Whitney Houston was in a different league.

Freddy Mercury was the first guy that came to mind.

Freddy is up there, but I gotta put in a vote for Steve Perry in his prime.  It was so sad that he could not sing on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame show.

I feel somewhat responsible for Chris's death. About 20 years ago I was at the NFL hall of fame and told my friend to pretend to kiss Ray Nitschke's bust while I took a picture. The next morning we found out he had died.

For God's sake will someone check on Carrie Underwood!

STONGLY agree with your disagreement.

Soundgarden was instamental in changing music.  They were both shockingly 'in your face' loud and extremely heartfelt/real.  RATM was an absolute force who's message may be more salient today than it was 20 years ago.  Audioslave let Rage's musical talents shine with a more personal message.

Audioslave worked great just like Velvet Revolver worked great.  The band was able to showcase their talents behind a frontman that was as good as the original but very different.

TAMU is correct. It is a fact. Haha, referring to some other threads. I liked Audioslave, I thought they did a good job of updating the "Grunge" thing while still being true to the original sound. Regarding Cornell's suicide, I feel deeply sorry for him. There was a time in my life when I would have.called him a coward. With a little age, I have come to understand how life can beat you down, throw in some mental illness and the wrong circumstances and it might seem like a reasonable course of action. I feel sorry for him but more so for the family he left behind.

Audioslave was very underwhelming, yes.

1. Morello was supposed to be the featured instrument in this setup. Cornell was supposed to compliment Morello when they talked about the supergroup, but instead Cornell and the group had continued musical disgareements. Cornell dominated a lot of the tracks which leads into...
2. I'm not a Chris Cornell fan, I think he's talented and is a good singer, but his voice isn't for me. Never really did it. I know this is an unpopular opinion.
3. Cornell's vocals seemed much more whiny with Audioslave than Soundgarden/TOTD
4. Audioslave was too sterile, too radio and frankly got as watered down. Paralleling RHCP
5. It wasn't RATM, so I'll have that jealously forever.

Freddie Mercury is a very solid choice. Didn't pop into my head when I first saw the question but he definitely belongs at or near the top

Mercury instantly popped into my head. Amazing, amazing voice.

Amy Winehouse ... first time I heard her I was like, "Wow, she is awesome." And I didn't even like the song! But yes, hard to top a younger Aretha.

Neil Young, now THERE'S a voice for you!

Actually, my first impression of him was the same as anybody's first impression of him, but Neil is so brilliant that I became a fan of his music and realized he did a tremendous job of writing for his voice. As he has grown older, his voice has smoothed out and I now find it "expressive."

Here's a great example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtzKliO3cQg

Whenever I listen to this song, I think about my daughter (now 30 and getting married next year), and I tear up. Seriously.

Nads, I hear you. The bond between a daddy and his little girl can be incredibly strong, especially if they live far apart. I vowed I wouldn't cry at my daughter's wedding and I didn't. But, I let the flood gates wild open about a week prior to the event. It's ok and all good.

Oh, I'm a weeper from way back. Not the least bit ashamed. Cried when my son got engaged, too!

I feel like I have to give Cat Stevens and Sam Cooke at least get a mention.

But really, for my money, it doesn't get any better than when Michael Bolton sings when a man loves a woman.

A couple of great Chris Cornell moments that really display his range, not only vocally but also stylistically.

https://youtu.be/IuUDRU9-HRk

^Nothing Compares 2 U -- Sinead O'Connor cover

https://youtu.be/uPsvqhH4wiQ

https://youtu.be/g5SZVmsFxxY

^ Both Redemption Song covers, the first is on stage with his daughter

https://youtu.be/6bXhfDGv8xA

^And I Will Always Love You -- Whitney Houston

When you contrast these with how he rips through Rusty Cage or Bleed Together, wow, to me, he could just do it all.  Damn.

Both versions are dynamite.  When i heard yesterday that this is a Prince song i had a "did i know that?  i feel like i should've known that.....holy crap Prince was talented" moment.

As an honorable mention in the female category:  Annie Lennox needs a shout out, she can rip into a tune.

Yep. It's a  Prince song. So is the Bangles song "Manic Monday".

And Annie Lennox rocks. I attended a Euryrthmics concert in the late 80's and it was great.

Not really.  I just can't believe that people think Bolton has a good voice.  He completely over-sings everything.

This is a gag from the movie Office Space.  If your boss didn't say he needs you to come in tomorrow you should watch the movie.

I've always thought his singing sounds too whiny.  His popularity was always a mystery to me.

My first business was Ludwig Van Ear in Milwaukee many many years ago and I've listened to lots of music. For me,

Johnette Napolitano of concrete blonde, Adele and Barbara Streisand.

Nat King Cole, Freddie Mercury and Elvis

He's great in elevators, though. He was born for that gig.

Why anyone other than a lonely, bored single woman would compliment him is beyond me

Alison Moyet.  (Yaz).  For one album.  I keep trying to do better than Freddy Mercury and I can't.
