Title: Best cheese curds and mozza sticks near Milwaukee
Post by: wadesworld on March 24, 2017, 10:20:04 AM
Duane's sub sandwich thread in Hangin' at the Al had a few places that had cheese curds and it got me thinking about the best cheese curds, as I friggin love cheese curds.  So what are some of the best cheese curds, and mozza sticks, that you've had near Milwaukee?  Or anywhere for that matter.

For me it's Leff's Lucky Town.  A&W actually has great curds, Cousin's subs has solid curds, and Oscar's (frozen custard, not pub) has outstanding curds.  Jake's Burger's curds were pretty good but they weren't very big and the portion was pretty small.  Culver's is overrated and Gille's is just bad.

Mozza sticks it's obviously Slim's/Saz's.

For curds in Madison, it's gotta be the Old Fashioned. Paprika ranch dipping sauce: Yum!

I hate to say it, but I think A&W are the best curds I've found in Milwaukee... just not a fan of the heavy breading found just about everywhere, and I like my cheese curds - fresh and fried - with a noticeable (but not offending) amount of sodium.  (Pretty sure A&W uses mozzarella cheese which typically has a higher salt content than the traditional cheddar.)

Can't remember where I got the mozzarella sticks, but the things were twice the length of a normal mozzarella stick and had something of a pastry shell around them.

We are in agreement on the type of curds that we like.  Check out Leff's curds if you're ever there.  Similar to A&W's but a bit smaller and higher quality.  They are somewhat expensive (something like &7.50) but it's a huge portion.  Oscar's custard are basically the exact same as A&W's.

And that sounds like a Saz's/Slim's mozza stick.  Egg roll style, but bigger.  Basically take a full string cheese and wrap it in a mini tortilla and fry it.

I was always a fan of Gold Rush's (the chicken place) fried cheese curds.

I have no idea if Gold Rush is still around, but there was one on the South Side and another in Bay View.

Gold Rush is alive and well!

I dig Stubby's cheese curds. Super fresh, and served with a bacon parmesan peppercorn sauce.

Revere's in Delafield has some pretty good curds as well, thin breading and mixture of cheddar and mozza if I remember correctly.

Revere's is owned by Chris Leffler.....who owns Leff's.

Best mozzarella sticks I've ever had were a place I worked years ago that has since closed. We made them in house. Get a block of mozzarella and cut into rectangle wedges (or just use string cheese). Take an egg roll wrapper and egg wash the edges. Roll like a burrito and fry. Cooks quickly and comes out nice and crisp on the outside.

It's pretty easy to make cheese curds at home too. Make a tempura batter and dip the curds. Spread them out on a baking sheet and freeze them before frying. Delicious.

The cheese curds at Miss Katie's on campus are fantastic. They're not on the menu but they always have them on game day. Light, fluffy, and delicious.

Who's On Third on Old World Third Street has phenomenal curds. Tempura battered and insanely gooey. Goes great with their house ranch.

I'll tell you who doesn't:

http://thecowandthecurd.com/

I live in Philly and people here LOVE this cheese curd food truck.  It shows up to major events, tweets out its location, etc., and there are always super-long lines.

But let me tell you.  It's a travesty to cheese curds.  Way too much air in the curds.

Let me further tell you.  There is a market out here that is ripe for the taking.  Some Scooper out there could come out to Philly and give these dudes a run for their money, competition a la Pat's and Geno's style.

Edit: It's not "near" Milwaukee, but it is a truck, so who knows, it could be near it at any time.

I think I've actually heard of this.... are these the guys who deep fry a cheesy-flavored dough instead of actual cheese?  Basically a hush puppy overloaded with cheese?

It's been quite some time, but IIRC, it was actual cheese.  However, the air-to-curd ratio of of their curds was astronomical.  Way higher than, say, Gold Rush (place that I mentioned above ITT).

Had lunch today with a guy from Philly.  Introduced him to his first cheese curds.  He's hooked.

Solely from an emotional standpoint due to my college years, I will never put any cheese curds above the Dogg Haus cheese curds on Wells.
From a pure quality standpoint, the Mozzarella Marinara at Calderone Club (dinner menu only) is fantastic.

If by "just a bit outside of Milwaukee" you mean a 2.5 hour drive, then yes, it's just a bit.  I do agree that Renard's has top shelf curds.

Since we were talking about Milwaukee, I figured throwing in a little Ueckerism would bring Door a little closer....
