Title: Enberg's "McGuire"
Post by: Slick on February 28, 2017, 12:21:37 PM
Just drove hundreds of miles to see the McGuire Play at the REP. Very well done. Crivello really looks like Al. Do any of you "Locals" know if any of the current coaching staff has seen it?

Several players from late 60's and early 70's saw it our Alumni weekend and loved it. Crivello knocked it out of the park.

Haha. Haven't seen that acronym for a long time.
It is fabulous!!!  Eerie how much Crivello looks like Al.  Captures an incident that very few know about and I have not seen in books about Al.  He got arrested in Detroit after a game with Vitale's Detroit game!!!!  Couple of different versions---the in the play is that he inadvertently elbowed a police officer during a fracas while trying to protect/extricate one of his players.  Another version was that he clocked a police officer while swinging back at a Detroit fan that had swung at him and the timing of the officers intervention was quite unfortunate!!!  Wadesworld's grandfather got him out of jail that night (long story!!!)  Three days later, the charges are dropped.  I always wondered if the cop got a check!!!

'bout time you joined this message board.  If'n it's who I think it 'tis--your honor.

And if I'm not mistaken (I haven't seen it yet--tix have been purchased) Crivello was a cheerleader during the '73-74 season.

He was.  Told a hilarious story about how it happened after the performance.

I bought my ticket a couple weeks ago and they were down to singles. Couldn't take the wife unless we wanted to sit across the room from each other, so she's staying home. I'll be well dressed. Wouldn't surprise me if every show is now sold out.

Tickets are sold out on the website, but my fiancé knew I wanted to go so badly she called.

The deal is you can get tickets but they're bad seats. "Pole in the way, etc"

We still purchased.  Do what you have to do.

They're doing a summer run of it as well for anyone that couldn't get tickets.  I got a chance to go last week and it was great, well worth your time.

Saw it last night.  This is a must see play for Marquette fans.  We went with two other couples that included Badger leaning folk, and they were equally enthusiastic about it (perhaps because they were hearing some of the tales for the first time).

As others have mentioned, Crivello truly has you believing that he's Al.  Only one thing surprised me a bit:  in one segment concerning Al as sinner vs. saint there is a clear inference that he wandered off the marital ranch.  I had never heard any talk of Al catting around.  Not judging, not shocked--just was news to me.

But go see it when it returns in June.  I'd see it again.

Heading up to see it Wednesday afternoon - only had bar seating left though, which is not good.  But Crivello was in the first logic class I taught at MU - will be great to see him again..... great career he has had so far.

I'm going to hang out in bar area after the 1:30 show.   If Tony has time he might pop out to say hi after the show he told me.  Hope to meet you there!

I put on MU gear.  Didn't see many others wearing the pride.  Tony came out and chatted a bit.  My guess is that he does it after each performance.

why would this be ending if it's sold out and seems like many would like to still see it, including me?  couldn't they video it and turn it into a movie?  i mean the play.  i understand a movie would lose something, but a video of the play.  i also understand that seeing it live is 3/4's of the experience, but...play it again baby

“McGuire” set to return March 23-April 18, 2021 at the Quadracci Powerhouse theater.  Seating limited to 35% capacity, face masks required.  Will also be offered virtually.  Don’t see details on how that part would work.

I’ve gotten to see it twice. As a 2011 alum who has read a lot about Al McGuire, it was so cool to see him come to life. I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews of the actor and his ability to capture Al.

Also, I was a bit surprised to see an event in March 2021 already planning for 35% capacity.

Because they want to sell tickets NOW.  I am sure if things significantly improve in the next six months, more seats will open up.

Yep, that part was just doing today's small bit to crush any hope I have of things getting better.

Da Judge:

The Detroit story is recounted in my book "You Can Call Me Al: The Colorful Journey of College Basketball's Original Flower Child Al McGure" (Centennial Edition).

That and at least one other story where Al was accused of being involved in on-floor melees are included.

After one of the fracases Al said, "If I were a university I wouldn't hire me."

Go Warriors!

P.S. The original "Al" in Dick Enberg's one-man show was actor Cotter Smith. Anthony Crivello picked up where he left off. The fact that Anthony was able to watch Al up close and personal as an MU cheerleader, gives him a great perspective on Al.

It was an eye popping experience
I was late grade school as I remember
My dad was the chief judge in Milwaukee
They were refusing to set bail and Al was going to spend the night in the Wayne County jail
First Father Raynor calls the house; than Sam Sauceda; then a lawyer (Boyle maybe or could have been Tom Duffey who was really close to Al but did not do criminal law)
Dad had to beg the Wayne County Sheriff to have their chief judge call him
Bail got set;Al got out; my guess is the injured cop got a check; charges weren’t issued.
Think I have the book and will check it out
Also think I have 2 user names
Daduv7 and dajudge

MU lost to Detroit in overtime 94-92. A Detroit fan came out of the stands after the game and started yelling at Pat Smith. Pat proceeded to knock the guy down. The police grabbed Pat. Al tried to get the cop off Pat Smith.

Al was charged with assaulting the policeman. The accusation was that Al slugged the cop and loosened one of his teeth. Al insisted that he did not hit anyone. His explanation was that he saw two guys with blue hats on top of Pat. Al thought they were ushers.

The policeman backed off from his charge and said that he was mistaken. It was someone else who had hit him, not Al. Al was released on a $27.50 bond.

An embarrassed McGuire said afterward: "If I were a university, I wouldn't hire me."

The entire escapade is detailed in my book.

It will be 20 years this January that Al had a soft landing in the dancing lights.

Thank you.

Getting a chance to talk to Coach Al, Hank, Rick and even guys like Pat Smith, Hughie McMahon, Bo, and even a number of the old coaches like Wooden, Dean Smith, Lou Carnesecca, Red Auerbach, Dave Gavitt, John Kundla, Ray and Joey Meyer and many others is even more important to me today since almost all of them are gone. I was fortunate to interview them when I had the chance.

All told, I interviewed 140 people who had either grown up with Al, played for him at Dartmouth, Belmont Abbey and Marquette, coaches back then and some of Al's family members.

As I note in one of the blogs ("When Al McGuire Said Yes") on my website (www.jdmpress.net), Al could have told me to get out of his life any number of times, but he did not. I was fortunate as an MU grad that he gave me the green light to write his story.

Go Warriors!

I've heard so many good things about this play...wish they would get a performance of it professionally filmed and produced and then make it available online/streaming (on Amazon Prime, YouTube, etc.).

That hasn't been done for this one, has it?
