Title: The difference.
Post by: mattyv1908 on February 12, 2017, 03:16:47 AM
If Wojo was a salesman he'd be the guy you meet in the very beginning stages of your purchasing decision.  The product knowledge guy.  You appreciate his sincerity and enthusiasm and yet he evokes no compelling reason to act.

In contrast, Buzz is the guy you buy from when you know you're getting hosed because you've decided what you want yet need a compelling nudge.

Say what you want, but Buzz's players bought in.  Wojo's three seasons, however limited, have shown a reluctance to bite whatever it is he's selling.  I think his system is sound and when things are operating under optimal conditions it shows it's ideals.  Unfortunately when the uncontrolled variables of Big East conference play comes into play, very rarely do optimal conditions present themselves.  In these moments the teams show their intangibles, and thus far Wojo's teams have been sorely lacking.

And Crean's the guy who repulses you because his ego is still inflated from the year he had a decade ago.

That said, if they do pull it together and make the tournament I'm breaking out the autographed Jimmy Butler jersey in gold.  It's been too long.

I thought wojo was the closer. After all, there was the power point

So considering our fate on the bubble is very similar to an upstart ACC team as 9-10 seeds we both currently sit, what occurred in Blacksburg is especially ironic.

Especially against the #1 defensive team in the country.

They're not the best defensive team in the country. One of my big-time pet peeves. They allow the fewest points per game in large part because they play the second-slowest pace in the country.

My biggest pet peeve with this team is that when their shots don't fall they just continue to shoot, take it to the hoop and get fouled. We shoot 77% as a team that is solid

True, but they are the third best per KP. Not too far off

The issue is, we don't have guys on the team who can take it to the hoop.  How many times have you seen Markus take it to the hoop only to get rejected? He barely ever gets fouled when taking it in.  JJJ often gets stripped of the ball when going to the hoop, travels, or sometimes makes a really nice bucket at the hole.  Same with Cheatham, he often travels, gets the ball taken away, or gets blocked, with a few times of making a nice play at the bucket.   Don't know if I've really seen Sam drive all that often, Rowsey has a nice tear drop, but doesn't go inside all too often, and KR is really too slow to drive.

This is probably the biggest area in which Cheatham has regressed.  Last year he was great at driving and finishing, but this year he's missing wide-open lay-ups.

Because 9/10 times, the defender takes away his left, and HC either forces it that way anyway, or tries to go right, often unsuccessfully.  The book is out.  He'll adjust at some point, but clearly its messed with his confidence in the meantime.

Perhaps MU has a coach who is trying to execute a version of Duke-style basketball without Duke-level talent because that is all he knows.

We have to get those 50/50 balls

This team is a HUGH upgrade from where we were two years ago and from where we were when Wojo took over.  I couldn't stand team after team without a decent point guard and without any shooters. It was not fun to watch and I'd even call it painful.  On defense the current team is painful to watch, but it is clear the lack of height and athleticism is an issue.  Do you think Carter would have been our four year point guard under the previous coach... you bet he would have been... no one better would have been brought in to address this position even when it was obvious that is was a dire need. Offense matters at this position, not just defense.

I can wee where we are going, and I like it.  But we are still two years away, in my opinion to making that jump that we all want to see.  I think it will be a big jump in 2018-19.  Not incremental.  A leap.  Keys are getting next years class a year and not losing key players to transfer.

For anyone paying attention, it was made clear early by Who that this is a process.  Not a quick reload with questionable students or character. It is a remaking of the culture.  Not a quick scramble to reload each year.  Respect the process is key number one.

It is a process that we are in the middle of... yet there has been great improvement.  We are missing a couple of pieces especially on defense, yet key players have been added.  Players with skill that we have not seen around MU in a while.

A little patience and understanding of what is trying to be achieved is in order.  If you look at the players coming in next year, you'll notice size and an uptick in athleticism.  That will help on the defensive end, but don't expect immediate impact on the defensive end year one. Next year will be incremental.

The Trolls and troll feeders and impatient types, may want to jump off the ship for two years.. and then see what we look like on the floor.   I suspect we will have Wojo's a team that represents the school well on and off the court.

Finally, for Cheatham, give it a break.  He will be okay.  For those of us who have followed college balls for decades, for every player or two that makes a jump their sophomore year, there is a player who regresses but makes a leap as a Junior.  Confidence is a tricky thing when dealing with any players, but when dealing with teenagers and younger players, it is even more tricky.  They have not been through the battles and ups and downs.  They tend to get panicky and press and try to do more instead of slowing down and picking areas to focus on.

At the B&G Action this year, they had Wojo's punched white board being raffled off.  The entry wound was more karate chop than full fisted punch.

So here I am, driving 10 mph over the speed limit in the left lane.  Bet you'd still be tailgating.

If you're only doing 10 mph over and in the left lane, you don't belong in the left lane.

I think the sign says 'slower traffic keep right'. If you are in the left lane---going whatever speed you are going and I'm behind you going 2 mph faster.......you should move to your right.......because you are slower than me.......just like the sign say (regardless if you are going 10, 20, or 30 mph over the speed limit).

How much did it auction for? And when will the bidding start on Wojo's interview power point? That should be interesting.

There are generals who won't allow power-point at their briefings.
I'm sure we have people around here who make a living doing power-point.

This. Why is it so difficult for people to understand that the left lane is for passing? Does not matter how fast you are going. Slower traffic keep right.

So, anything slower than the speed of sound?  If I'm traveling at 10 mph over the legal limit and that's too slow for you, just go around...  and get off my lawn, too, while I'm thinking about it!
