Been wanting to check out Sneaky Pete, but not had time. Have Taboo on DVR, but haven't watched it yet. Not that much is really getting my attention. Looking forward to Iron Fist, but not much else right now.

Not a new show, but I watched the pilot for Outnumbered on Hulu yesterday.  Wife and I are big fans of British comedy, and we have three kids, so this seemed like a no-brainer that should pretty much absorb our TV watching time for the next month or two.

My wife and I are in the same boat.  Intrigued, but frustrated with difficulties in understanding what people are saying much of the time, and really have no idea where this show is intending on going.

So far that recipe has us keeping on tuning in, hoping we can figure out the ultimate long term plot.

What's a "DVD Screener"?  Is it different than the actual movie that the public sees?

The Academy distributes DVDs to its members so that they can view the nominated flicks in the comfort of their homes before voting. Somehow these are uploaded every year at places like the Pirate Bay or Demonoid etc. These are the same movie that the public sees just some studios might flash a message at the beginning stating it is a screener and not to be sold/distributed.

So I'm guessing that since most of the nominee class has already been released in some form, the draw here is simply for "economical" reasons?

I'm two in. My Tom Hardy mancrush will keep me going.

It's good, I think. Worth keeping on. Something has to be coming. The payment scene was fun.

Remember, True Detective 1 was rough through 3 episodes.

This x 100. I had mentioned it in the 2016 thread, but with the third (and final) season starting in April, errbody that isn't caught up should start their binge soon.

First season is entertaining and lays good character groundwork, but the second season is bold and surreal and the type of TV that you sit back and say "that was awesome, but I'm surprised it got made." Even if it isn't your bag, you won't feel like you wasted the time.

If you like Downton Abbey or The Crown you will like this one too.  In fact some of the actors from The Crown are in it.  They even delve into the servants quarters like Downton Abbey.

The Bachelor.

I've actually never watched the Bachelor/Bachelorette, but I got a text from a friend who watches it with his fiance and apparently one of the contestants was roommates with a friend of ours while they were at MU Law together, and the girl was just named as the next Bachelorette...despite apparently still being alive on the Bachelor.  Well done there with the spoiler, ABC!

I guess the Bachelor is from around Milwaukee, so that makes back to back Bachelor/Bachelorette with a Milwaukee connection.  What a great feat for the city!

What I really watch?  Chicago Fire and Chicago PD.  Never got into Chicago Med.  Will probably watch Chicago Justice when it starts.  Certainly not the best shows I've seen, but there aren't a ton out there right now that catch my interest.  Mostly just watch basketball.

I have been watching "APB", which hasn't gotten much buzz. It's on Fox on Monday nights.

It's about a smartass Elon Musk - type billionaire whose childhood friend is murdered in Chicago.  He pays the Rahm Emmanuel lookalike mayor $100 million to take over a precinct of the CPD and load it up with high-tech equipment like phone apps that can get a cop to your location in 30 seconds, drones that can follow perps, stun guns that can shoot someone at a distance, and super souped-up cop cars.

Entertaining stuff.

Yep on OA, but be careful- I got sucked in too. It gets more than a little ridiculous about halfway in, maybe more.  The end was a surprise and kinda redeemed itself, but not sure it got me all the way back.  You'll know what I mean when you get there, but the "movement" stuff was a bridge too far for me.

Taboo is the only new show.

I'm through 3 episodes at this point and I am still unsure if I like the show cause it's good or because I think it could be good. The East India Company stuff is awesome and the visuals are awesome, but this whole linkage between his time in Africa and his NA? mother and the current day is confusing.

And I really hope he and his sister did what I think the show is hinting they did, because if not I'm checking myself into a mental ward for being an awful human being.

Fun show, but not surprised. Would've been better off on CW. Be interesting to see what happens if and when Damage Control ever makes it to production. It's a Marvel show with a somewhat similar concept that ABC had in the works.

I was legitmately crying after this:

"Y'all have the same crappy fast food restaurants, the same empty main streets lined with boarded-up store fronts. They're scraped-out husks, victims of the unbridled capitalism that made a lie out of the American dream. So let's not make baseball out to be any more important than it really is. It's just a diversion that keeps us from pondering our own personal hells. So what do you say, folks? How about we kill another 3 hours on our slow and painful march to the grave? All right, top of the 1st. Should have a good one here this afternoon."

Is it worth starting?

Have it on DVR, going to watch the first episode tonight and I'll let you know.

Ozark is pretty solid.  They may be trying too hard to have multiple sub plots (character motivations?) going but it's definitely entertaining and twisty.

and bonus for anyone who has been to the Lake of the Ozarks......it totally captures the scene down there.

Im a big fan of the zombie genre and thought it got an awesome refresh with iZombie, so naturally I tried to get into The Santa Clarita Diet. But man, is that show absolutely grim. From a comedic standpoint its pretty funny but some of the scenes are just absolutely gruesome and hard to stomach.

iZombie is a blast. Rose McIver is brilliant at shifting her personalities. Agreed that Santa Clarita is grim. My wife loves it, I thought it was funny but at times a bit much.

Big fan of Ozark. Jason Bateman was really good. It was reminiscent of Breaking Bad, but action wise like jumping into season 3.

Just watched Defenders after binging the five Netflix Marvel seasons beforehand. The 8 episode format was nice. Didn't get bogged down in the middle like Luke Cage and Iron First did. After further review, Jessica Jones was the best season. Krysten Ritter was perfectly sardonic and David Tennant was my favorite Marvel on screen villain in any format so far. Daredevil season 2 was next best, largely because of Frank Castle. Can't wait for Punisher.

Agreed that Daredevil Season 2 and Jessica Jones were the best seasons....though I love Fisk as a villain. They did a brilliant job interpreting him from the comics to the small screen. I liked Luke Cage a lot more than most people did but was just as disappointed by Iron Fist. Haven't watched Defenders yet but will be doing it soon.

D'Onofrio was excellent as Kingpin. Really hoping they are building to the Frank Miller Born Again storyline for DD Season 3. That would give us another look at Fisk at his diabolic worst.

As far as Defenders, Danny Rand was the most improved character. In his series, IF was so impetuous and immature. He grows a lot by the end of Defenders and I do think IF2 stands to be much better. Despite how disappointing it was I think there's a lot of upside going forward.

The Vietnam War: A film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick

So far a very well done documentary - unbiased presentation of motives and rationale on all sides/perspectives.  Watch it with an open mind and it's a good tool to use when viewing others with differing positions on todays issues (many of which are exactly the same as those 50 - 60 yrs ago).

Pickle Rick was probably one of the greatest animated feats any artist has ever accomplished.

Ricklantis Mixup is probably going to win an Emmy.

One of the more fun new offerings in years. My wife, who hates sci-fi, really loved it. The kids in it are so great, especially the girl who plays 011.

It might be a little intense for pre-teens who scare easily and there are a few cuss words and implied sex, but it really is a great show for just about anybody over 12 (and mature kids younger than that).

Had a hard time getting through Narcos, they don't portray the entire situation in Colombia during that time completely correct.

I know, I know, it's a TV show and it's supposed to be entertaining more than completely factual just one of those shows I know is supposed to be good but kinda irks me. Don't even know if that makes any sense.

Keep in mind: it is live, i.e. unedited, so there's inevitably going to be a dud every once in a while.  Which for the cops, I would think a TV dud makes for a good day at work.  But calling it Cops 2.0 would be like calling SportsCenter "Local news sports segment 2.0."

The fact that it is live, and unedited, is what makes it interesting for those of us who demand actual reality from Reality TV instead of taking hours of heavily-produced footage and distilling it into a 21-minute show posited as "reality."

In that case, your ignorance may be blinding you to an otherwise welcomed opportunity... these cops are responding to calls wherever they come from, whether it's a trailer park or gated community.  So what you see depends on where the calls are coming from that evening.  Sure, the odds on any given night are going to be against seeing Sloane throwing down with Ferris outside their estate in Highland Park, but when it happens, it will be solid gold.

serious question-who do you call when someone is violating you and/or your family and property?  your mommy?  if you do consider calling a cop, i'm sure you're going tell them of your distrust and hate for them...before they consider saving your sorry...

Finally got to it--holy crap.  I love slow moving, character developing drama.  This ain't it!    End to end action (but with full character development) and shocking moments.

As Andy Greenwald said--"I don't know if it's good...but I do know that it's GREAT!"

Last episode the scene with the preacher in the lake-not gonna spoil it, but I was like "no he won't...oh, jesus, they're going to do this...they f*ing cannot do this...oh god no ... nothing like this has ever been done on television...arrrghh ...."

During the MU-UW watching event in Charlotte, one of our fellow Warriors recommended Big Mouth to me. My wife and I watched the first episode last night.

Absolutely stupid and over-the-top vulgar ... and DEFINITELY not for the kiddies ... but we laughed several times, including a couple of big belly laughs. We'll watch it again.

We've also watched some Bojack Horseman. Also completely ridiculous and stupid, also makes us laugh quite a bit.

As for Ozark, we have seen the entire season except for the finale, which we'll probably watch tomorrow. It's not easy to watch but it is engrossing. Jason Bateman is better than I thought. Laura Linney always annoys me, but she often plays annoying characters. The supporting cast is excellent.

Glow jr. flipped on Big Mouth a couple of weeks ago when we were watching TV together.  Normally I don't feel uncomfortable watching R-rated stuff in the same room with him, but this was a little much.  If this is really how the mind of a teen-age boy works, I don't need to know.

82, I also love me some Bojack Horseman. Funny in a lot of different ways and some quality cultural commentary as well. Their episode on gun control had me rolling on the floor laughing.

If you thought the first episode of Big Mouth was over the top vulgar, buckle your seatbelts, you've only reached the tip of the iceberg. There's a scene with Garrison Keillor that is particularly terrible/awesome and oddly timely. I don't like vulgar humor for the sake of vulgar humor. But if its used smartly I love it. Big Mouth uses it smartly...most of the time.

Finished Ozark yesterday - I enjoyed it. I haven't watched Bloodline yet.

In terms of the Marvel seasons, I'm on Luke Cage now.  I've read that Iron Fist is not very good. Is watching Iron Fist vital before starting the Defenders in terms of plot and storylines or is it safe to skip?

I'm working my way throw the Arrowverse (Arrow, The Flash, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl). Never watched any of them and I found a suggested viewing order on IMDB. It's decent so far. I like Arrow a lot, the Flash is hit or miss...side characters are solid but I don't like the lead and they seem to make up rules about his superpowers as they go. DC's Legends of Tomorrow has an interesting cast of characters and a classic but I believe untested premise. The entire show is basically exploring the question "If you could go back in time and kill baby Hitler, would you?" I just got to the part where Supergirl episodes start entering the rotation. Not loving it so far...like the Flash they seem to make up rules about her superpowers as they go but the supporting characters aren't as strong as the Flash's are. Dean Cain as Supergirl's dad is a nice touch though. The shows reference each other a lot with being overdependent on each other.

It's very uncomfortable, but compelling because it's so uncomfortable. And I can't binge watch it for that reason.

As for Big Mouth, I tried watching for 10 minutes and couldn't stick with it. I lived through adolescent boyhood once, thanks. Also a reminder that - as a new parent - to cherish my newborn son before he becomes an idiot throughout the 2nd decade of his life.

American Vandal is just fantastic.  One of the funniest things I have seen in years.

Finally got around to this one.  By the 5th episode, you’re so sucked in that you can forget it’s a mockumentary.  Very well done.  And hilarious.

My wife and I keep trying to watch The Man In The High Castle on Amazon Prime. We're through 7 episodes.

We like the premise of the show, and the imagery is really stunning: a swastika in the corner of the flag, Japanese names on what used to be U.S. government buildings, everybody greeting each other with "Heil Hitler." all the young kids in the Hitler youth, etc.

But once you get past the imagery, the plot just drags and drags and drags. I swear, I could edit each episode down to 25 minutes.

This is why we end up going a month or more between episodes while we watch other stuff.

Maybe American Vandal next!

Never watched Man in the High Castle.  Premise sounds great but have only heard negative reviews from friends.  My favorite review was a fridge who said it was MAGA porn.

Try Godless on Netflix.

No pun intended.  ;) One of the better Westerns I've seen in a while.

I made it through Man in the High Castle but my wife quit on me halfway through the 1st season.

My policy is "Never trust a talking appliance".

It has served me well.

Thanks. Godless does look interesting.

My wife only made it through one episode of Westworld, and I'm not exactly flying through the season, either. Not that Godless and Westworld are related or anything.

Echoing 82 a bit, I gave it a shot, had to quit on it. At the end of the day, its just a bad show shoehorned into a super cool premise. Not to get all avclub, my intuition is that it was just too ambitious for what Amazon was willing to put into it. To pull that show off, you need the budget to Nazify classic American imagery in a way that never stops stunning you, but also isn't the focus of the show. That takes a ton of $$, and you haven't even gotten to the writing, plot, acting, etc. There's a reason most of HBO's historical dramas (Rome, Deadwood) had short runs, and its not because they weren't good shows. Its just because the whole damn thing gets too expensive. Hell, FX got six seasons out of having Olyphant play the same damn character after Deadwood ended.

I was not impressed by Westworld, either.

After working hard to get through the 1st season of Man in the High Castle, the 2nd season was actually decent.

Legs, agree with everything you said. That season finale was the most dramatic/intense hour of television I have ever watched....and I loved it

Just finished Ozark, wow.

2nd season was to MITHC what the 3rd season was to Breaking Bad.

4 episodes and I love it.

Think my favorite character thus far is the daughter of the family that lives in the trailer park.

Absolutely.

On another note ...

Now almost finished with Season 1 of Transparent. One of the best shows I've seen in recent years.

I can see why Tambor keeps getting nominated for Emmies (and has won twice). I understand why he had to leave the series (yes, more sex charges against a Hollywood type), but it's hard to believe they can continue without him. Of course, I say this without having seen 80% of the series to date. So much outstanding TV, so little time!

The next seasons are just as good.

Some of the most fearless acting I have ever seen.

Thanks brand. Looking forward to watching the rest of Season 1 and then 2, 3 and 4.

My wife doesn't really like binge-watching much, but she loves Transparent, too.

Damn - that's it!

I knew I had seen her in another show I watched and I couldn't place it. Thanks!

Anyone watch NatGeo's "The Long Road Home" about the attack on Marines in Sadr City in 2004?

I thought it was very good.

Watched Bright, interesting mashup. Training Day with Orcs and Elves.

I'm not a middle Earth guy, I actually avoid that crap, but was entertained. Got campy at times, but a fast and fun 120 minute watch

Only reason I watched it was because it got killed critically, but fan ratings are coming in much higher and it's been watched 11 million times already.
