1. Is it cheap?
2. Can I get a beer with that?
I'm pretty sure if I had an Angelo's pizza now, I'd be on the crapper within 20 minutes.

I used to love Rocky's as a kid. Got a nostalgic slice a couple years ago hoping it would take me back. The only place it took me was the bathroom. Absolutely terrible pizza. Sauce is way too overpowering, mushy crust, and just as bad coming out as going in. How they stay in business is beyond me.

Pizza Joe's was opened for a minute when I was on campus... then became A Taste of Philly, which was SLAMMIN!!!!!
All I remember about Pizza Joe's is **someone, a freshman** puking there, in a cup, while seating with friends at a table. It overflowed.

Original Tombstones were pretty good as far as my college budget was concerned.

By far the biggest game changer to drunk food on campus is when BroYo decided to open late on weekends.

I'm pretty sure their frozen pizza isn't the same stuff they serve at the restaurant. But that aside, I'm particularly fond of Bernatello's Brew Pub/Lotzza Motzza lineup.

I seem to recall that in the 83 or 84 timeframe, Wales opened up a slice place, I think next door. It was only there for a bit before I left, and did not get much traffic. The food at the regular Wales was much better.

Interesting. Palos Heights always hosts a ton of club volleyball tournaments each season so we were always staying in hotels around there when I was playing/coaching. There was a HRI restaurant near there that we tried one time and enjoyed enough that when we saw their frozen pizza in the store we gave it a shot. Definitely the best frozen pizza I've had. I believe, but am not sure, that Gino's and HRI teamed up to make a deep dish frozen pizza? I've had a deep dish frozen that is good given that it's frozen pizza, but can't remember what brand it was.
I was down visiting my former MU roommate at his place in Chicago last summer and he had some friends from Chicago over. All of a sudden he asks me and the 2 other Milwaukee friends with me, "Have any of you ever heard of Home Run Inn Pizza?" I said yeah and he asked what I thought of it. Luckily I enjoyed it and said so (as apparently some of his friends hate it and have also said so...) and one of the girls reached into her purse and pulled out a coupon for a free frozen pizza for each of us. When I told her that my mom loves their frozen pizza she gave me another one. Turns out her parents are the owners and it's a family business. I talked to my old roommate about it more and he said they have a couple restaurants but put more interest in their frozen pizzas because they can separate themselves from the pack there but the restaurant side is pretty competitive.

Angelo' s was terrible, but the only place there. Then came Ski's deep dish (poor man's Chi style). NY Joe's went in next to Suburpia, and was a significant step up. Wales on Wells didn't have pizza, but did a solid burger. My favorite burger was the Gym on a hungover Saturday.

Believe it or not, you can get an outstanding Mexican breakfast in MN at the Woodbury Cafe . Manager is Mexicano. Chilaquilles are outstanding. Huevos rancheros is great.
Some of the best Mexican breakfast I've had was in Dallas. Eggs and I. Huevos Rancheros.... Near Gleneagles, I believe, near Addison.

Marquette Special: $6.99 for a 14" MSO pizza, quart of pop and breadsticks.
They delivered. And they took freakin' checks. Even my checks.
Never tried it sober, but second to a chimi from Amigo's for me (Chili, of course, is in a different, unnecessary to rate class) for post-bar food. Third would be the Ham 'n' Egger.

Angelos closed after my freshman year and sobelmans opened summer going into my junior year so not sure that your list makes sense unless you were only on campus for a year. I'd also add Starbucks to that list, I know it's not unique but I spent wayyy too much money on food there my freshman year.

My buddy (though not my roommate) did that once at Campus Town. Entire hallway of the fourth floor was eff'd. He fell asleep on the couch. 4 guys sleeping upstairs (nh) never woke up until morning.

There's a pic of the Wales pizza place in the '85 yearbook. Ate at Wales about once a week but only tried the pizza one time.

Mentioned both Amigos (specifically the chimi) and Ham 'n' Egger in my post! Favorite memory of Amigos was Farley flopping his junk on some guys chips, the guy walking away disgusted, and Chris sitting down to enjoy the bounty.

Lalli's is my personal favorite, followed by Barbiere's.
Balistreri's and Zaffiro's are solid, I was a fan of Pizza Man but I think I've had it too often. Mama Mia's is okay. Cranky Al's is pretty good. Crossroads Pizza in New Berlin is good. I find Marty's to be overrated. Others?

That said, if you ever make it to Fish Creek, I really like Wild Tomato. Given that I am surrounded by Chicago pizza (which is glorious), this is a fun change given how fresh all the ingredients are and the elaborate designs for their donation creations.

Not sure if I mentioned it, but the best specialty pizza I've had anywhere is whatever the Alfredo Pretzel Crust Pizza is at St. Francis Brewery. One of the best foods I've had ever. I think they market it as an appetizer, but it's freaking amazing. Pretzel crust, alfredo sauce, spinach and artichoke, it's like the best spinach and artichoke you've had times ten. Just awesome.

Yes, was going to mention their garlic bread. I had almost forgot how good Barbiere's was until work got it catered in last year. Have gone a couple times since and it is very good. Their sausage is outstanding.
Forgot to mention Tomaso's out in Cedarburg is awesome, plus that area in general is really nice.

Pizza Joe's / Pizza Pi's closed down because the staff was taken over by the rugby team and more free pizza was going out the door than paid pizza.
I believe Jerry Cohen of Major Goolsby's (and other MKE haunts) owned it and just pulled the plug realizing college kids, late night and a cash business are tough combination for success.

Your post surprised me. I never went to a Barnaby's in Wisconsin - maybe they were great - but, without a doubt Barnaby's in Schaumburg, Illinois is the worst pizza I've ever had in a restaurant.
I just doubled checked on the internet and saw that Barnaby's in Schaumburg is now closed. The people seem to be voting Barnaby's out. There are still four in Chicago's north/northwest suburbs, though.

I've never been, but it's still there - one of four left in existence - the others are in Des Plaines, Northbrook and the original one in Niles. Founded as a chain in the sixties, the founder sold them off one by one in the seventies/eighties. Different owners must have resulted in differing quality of food leading some to close, others to have their admirers. I was quite fond of the Northbrook one when I was in high school in the seventies.

Barnaby's still has the place on Rand Road in Arlington Heights. I haven't been there in ages but I do recall it was pretty good very similar in menu and quality to another local chain known as Jake's. We frequented the one in Palatine in the late 70's when they had $1 pitcher of beer nights. Until the last time when we found cockroach remnants embedded in the cheese.

Yep Northbrook, was good. But I spend most of the time at the Villa Park ( Off Roosevelt RD at Summit) one. When you joined their club, pitchers were at a great reduce price and you received a big dark brown ceramic Barnaby's Mug. Great after Softball games.

The first problem with a barnabys is the name. Who in the gosh darn heck would associate pizza with something named barnabys? Would you go to a place for lox n bagels named gunthers? If you're gonna serve pizza, ya gotta have the name Marios or something, hein'er hey?

Barnabys has that distinctive crust. They dust the pan in corn meal. Good toppings, decent suace, and a distinct crust.
It's not a world beater pizza, buts it's the pizza some grew up on, and it's pretty darned good and consistent. If you are are pizza snob, don't bother. If you like neighborhood pizza, it's for you.

A couple renovations later, it is much less recognizable as a former Army munitions storage unit, but still has the arched roof. The pizza was legendary at one time. It recently changed ownership, but still rates highly as some of the best thin crust pizza in Chicagoland.

You could watch the dudes making your stuff behind a glass window, best chicken and mojos and pizza in the world. I think my parents loved it b/c the bill was considerably less than the others too. The organ piper pizza place was popular too, but it was a distant #2 to our shakeys

That must be a newer place. The sterlingworth was infamous for its Friday fish fries with its corn fritters and syrup. It burned down like twice. Not sure if they ever rebuilt after 2nd one. The cook(s) went to evergreen golf course and brought with them the the fish fry and fritters and if you didn't t get there early, you went hungry...bowbowbow

Had pizza at Caserta in Providence again last night. Place never disappoints. It's also just a couple of blocks away from the Dunkin Donuts Center if you are ever in town for a marquette game. And federal hill is a great neighborhood in general to check out with a bunch of great Italian restaurant options

Angelo' s was terrible, but the only place there. Then came Ski's deep dish (poor man's Chi style). NY Joe's went in next to Suburpia, and was a significant step up. Wales on Wells didn't have pizza, but did a solid burger. My favorite burger was the Gym on a hungover Saturday.
Thank you. I've been reading this thread from the top and was trying to figure out the new York style pizza by the slice - NY Joe's is it! Was pretty good as I recall, but then again......broke college student.

Definitely not new, my dads family had one of the first cabins up there in the early 70s and he tells stories of going there. It was called kileys cove till the mid 80s. Played at evergreen a couple weeks ago, love that place.
They do a nice job. Nice operation from top to bottom.
