Wally is the best college jumper in the country that does not go to Texas Tech
1 Jacorian Duffield SR - Texas Tech 2.25m 7-4 ½
2 Bradley Adkins JR - Texas Tech 2.22m 7-3 ¼
3 Wally Ellenson JR - Marquette 2.18m 7-1 ¾

Right because he redshirted for basketball this year.

But, if he chooses, Wally can have a professional career as a track athlete. Unknown as a basketball player (at this point)

That's got to be frustrating for him.
He's still got potential to be a world-class jumper.
Good news is: Jacorian is done after this year!

Does the NCAA offer any kind of 6th year eligibility/exemption for a college hoops player that chooses to participate in the Olympics in another sport? I know the NCAA rule for most athletes is they have 5 years to use their 4 years of eligibility (5th as redshirt), but it would be logical (is NCAA ever logical?) for a unique exemption for next year to allow him to train.

They allow it for Mormon missions, so I think it would be a real possibilty if he missed a season because he was on the Olympic team.

That almost never happens. The Olympic trials are in June and the games are in August. The track season is completely over (ends in May) by the time the trials come around. No one takes off to train, rather the track season provides the perfect training.
Additionally to make the Olympic team, you have to finish in the top three at the trials. He can barely make the top three in college, and the trials we be loaded with professional jumpers.
Don't get me wrong, he is an outstanding world class jumper. It's just he is not quite in the top three (yet?).

Because of the weather the high jump was moved indoors. Not sure how their indoor jumping facility is, but that could have made a difference in how high everyone jumped.

I think Wally will peak at the NCAA Finals. He has a 7'-7"jump in him...
