Negative trends for FOX Sports 1, Big East in 2015
There were plenty of theories about what caused the poor Big East ratings on FOX Sports 1 in 2014. Among the most prominent were: No one knows where to find the channel. It takes time to build a loyal base. The product wasn’t great. The results for 2015 are in, and the prognosis isn’t any […]<img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=painttouches.com&blog=28348875&post=13358&subd=painttouches&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" />

Could the big drop in March be due to the Uverse dispute. Only reason I think that would cause the drop during tourny season.
Also, Fox screwed up big on channel placement. If they want to be ESPN, have it with ESPN. Don't put it with the speciality sport channels and expect anything. Best thing would of been start fresh than rebranding Speed channel. No one watched that or knew what channel it was.

The ratings are ugly, but I personally love the deal with FS1/2. Sure, it'd be nice to have the games on ESPN, but they're not, and it is two pages down on the guide from ESPN.
I have zero problem with it...my guess is ratings will improve some, but bottom line is the BE is full of small private schools. They're never going to draw the eyeballs that big state schools or national programs like Duke do. It is what it is...just happy I can watch every game, and frankly, that's all I give a rip about.

Keep in mind, with the data coming in....it was a steal of a deal for the Big East....next time the contract is up, the Big East doesn't get nearly the same contract if the numbers don't improve. Means a decreased revenue stream for Marquette.
It's at least cause for concern.

This. The hard part is early numbers are rough for FS1 overall as it's new and coming into a pretty established market. They need to get things going for the BEast telecasts though. This is bad.
-
Ratings are fine, will help in 2017 if FOX can land some of the Big Ten. Need more college sports programming. Things are going well with Nascar and UFC.
As usual, most college basketball telecasts attracted very few viewers. Of the 979 games on CBS, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, FOX, FS1, FS2 and NBCSN, only 25 had a rating of 1.5 or higher. More than half of the games had 0.0 or 0.1 rating, and more than a quarter finished in the 0.2-0.5 range.

Gotta win. Bottom line. No BE storyline in the tourney. 1 team left. Nobody talking about the conference.

Sure, but the BE might get bumped in favor of other programs as they acquire more content. Right now the BE is not doing itself any favors in Fox Sports eyes.
"The December 2 Mount St. Mary’s/Seton Hall game on Fox Sports 2 was the least-watched of the season, with just 1,000 viewers. Fox Sports 2 aired the 10 of the 11 least-watched games during the regular season, with a Big East team involved in each of the ten."

College basketball in general draws bad ratings.
But, networks are paying big money to broadcast it. Why?
I suspect that traditional "ratings" aren't really telling the story on profitability for these networks.

The BE was extremely fortunate that things happened the way they did. They got a better deal than they should have. Sure the deal could end up being less valuable the next go around - but that's ten years from now. I have no clue what I will be doing ten years from now. There is plenty of time to worry about that.
I wonder how expansion might play into this?
I think adding more product to its line up would help greatly. Really the only realistic option is B10 games.

You mean by sending 60% of the league to the ncaa tourney. Big East is more than holding it's own. The BE will get bumped, but ESPN and CBSSN can have tons of league on their network. Doesn't add up.

Need to get the BTN and PAC 12 on board for some Big East/league challenges on FS1. There's some good cross over (wasnt fox pushing for a pac 12 one? And who is hosting the Gavitt games?)

Considering the Big East and Fox are two years into a twelve-year contract, this story is nothing more than Chicken Little proclaiming how the sky is falling. What were ESPN's ratings for college hoops on all their networks (ESPN, ESPN2 & ESPNU) this year? If Fox can add the B1G, that will help.

I completely forgot it was a 12 year contract....I take everything back....we good

Except that no sports television deal has ever gone down...much less more than a decade later. Was it too much? Maybe. But considering the ungodly television deals every major conference football school is getting (going to be what $30 million soon?), me thinks our $4 million a year is nothing.
-
Of course the ratings are bad - every school is a smaller, private school and only one owns it's city (Creighton) and only 1.5 have national fan bases (Georgetown / Nova). FOX waaaaaaay over paid but they needed content. We were in the right spot. Let's hope there are no opts outs.

I'm no longer worried about the Big East in this regard right now....but it does make things interesting in general for the market. Look at Ammo's post....college basketball ratings are historically low and the contract associated with them don't seem to be anchored to the ratings
How is that a sustainable business model? I still continue to argue that live sports content is the next bubble to pop and within 10 years it will get very, very ugly.

Well, seeing as neither chick or I get a paycheck as professional athletes.......

Thought it'd be interesting to see how each team stacked up. Eek.

The trend may have been down this year, but how was everyone else's trend, e.g., ESPN? In other words, was the trend down because it's Fox Sports or was the trend down because the trend of all college basketball/sports/television is down. Put yet another way, the trend could be down and yet Fox Sports 1 could have still gained on ESPN (the latter trended down even more than FS1 did)
-
None of the BTN games are included in this, nor are any games on regional networks. Should the BE be looked down upon because a game that would be on a regional network in another conference is a secondary national tv game for this conference? These were the only national games for Albany, Texas A&M CC, Loyola (MD), etc.
-
Winning has very little bearing on ratings if you can't even access/find the channel/s.
-

I'd like to know the subscriber numbers for FS2. I'm on a comcast package with sports package that gets FS1, CBS Sports, ESPN, ESPN2, BTN....and no FS2

Bingo. Plus Fox sold many games to CBS SportsNet. Have to give the TV deal a flat tire so far.
-
Apparently FS2 gets to 45,393,000 households.
Compared to....
53,000,000 for CBS Sports Network
73,594,000 for ESPNU
84,836,000 for FS1
94,379,000 for ESPN2
94,396,000 for ESPN
No wonder it has the lowest viewership numbers.
-
Plus, the FS2 games are cupcake state at big east school, of course the ratings are going to be bad.
-

Next deal is up in 2026.

Nope, contract won't allow for it.
-
Not that this would really make the numbers jump much more, but FS1 is barely on any TVs in hotels. I travel quite often for work and was constantly watching the game through my computer or phone through FoxSportsGo. If there was a non-MU Big East game, I would have liked to have watched it casually through the TV, but I'm not going to stream it through my phone or computer.
