Title: The AL on Friday night
Post by: geagles10 on December 17, 2014, 07:04:42 PM
What do you guys think the environment will be like?   Anybody know if it's sold out?  Should be fun on campus prior with all of the bars likely packed.

Tickets were still available at end of last week.  That is concerning.  Since it wasn't part of the season ticket package, it took a little more effort to gain tix and initially you were limited to just 2 even if you had more than 2 season tickets.  That limitation appeared to have backfired but they wanted every one to have a chance at attending in a downsized facility.

Having said that, I can't wait.  Especially if the Luke show continues.

Yeah I think it will be fun. Even though it may not be sold out, I believe it is close.

I know several lower bowl season ticket holders who were not going to pay for one more cupcake regardless of the venue. For those who maybe going to the Al for the first time they will be pleasantly surprised how close you are to the action.

Tickets are still available on TicketMaster & StubHub.

On TicketMaster it shows only one endzone was reserved for student tickets.  This game is on campus for crying out loud, fill it up with kids!  Any unsold tickets should be made available to the students, asap.

Really too bad that for one game, not part of the season ticket package, MU couldn't offer courtside seats to the kids.   >:(

I actually just got text from that new ReplyBuy ticket service that marquette started using, offering 200 level tickets, in the last rows, for $10 each ($30 regular).

Still not sold out. Can buy up to 20 seats together now. Upper Rows. Hopefully it is a packed venue with a good atmosphere. I'm pretty excited about an otherwise lackluster non-con game. Think it will be a unique experience.

Wow, I sure hope it sells out. I get that the students mostly aren't on campus, but, still, people ought to be interested in being at the Al for the first ever regular season game.

If my drive wasn't 14 hours, I'd be there.

Road trip?

I am one of those people who has been clamoring for a game at the Al. I hate that I am stuck in Texas. Should be a raucous atmosphere. Wish that we could do one of these for a BEast game (but understand why we cannot)

Title: Re: The AL on Friday night

The environment is going to be similar to a destination tournament with two major differences:

1) The crowd will be 99% MU
2) We don't have to wait for the fans from the previous game to leave to get in our seats.

In other words, a damn near perfect basketball environment.  The only thing that could be better is the opponent, but I'll take it.

Can't wait for Friday!!!!!

That's the spirit!! Good for you and the Mrs.!

On a far-reaching note, if the turnout for this game is strong (i.e., sellout) might the admin consider having an early non-conference buy game at the Al in the future? I hope so. And, if so, might that influence the replace-the-BMO negotiations? If, suddenly, MU decides it has a decent place to house a decent number of games (a la Villanova), does that give MU a stronger position?

I think part of the problem was the price point. After fees it was $42/ticket for lower section seats. Pretty crazy for Alabama A&M. They could've priced a bit more competitively. That being said, I'll be at the game.

Finals are over, its almost Christmas. Most undergraduate students are gone. Dorms are a literal ghost town. Plus did you see the student section at the BC on Tuesday? They might not fill that endzone.

MU doesn't travel well even it is mile away from its regular home.  Comeon folks, fork up a couple of pesos and have a Little fun and support these guys.not like you all have kids playing high school ball.  You can miss one fish fry this year.

Mr and a couple alumni will be there. Though my tickets actually have a seat number so I don't know if they have a student section because there may not be enough.

When I bought my tickets they had one baseline reserved for students. Judging by previous years student attendance at the BC during winter break I'm weary if they will be able to fill it.

Agreed.  Marquette madness even basically sells out in the AL, although the obvious difference is the price.  No reason it should not sell out.

As I said in another thread, student season ticket holders were just offered a free ticket for the asking last night.

Seriously, if you haven't been back directly on campus in a few years, it'll be a great night.  Great shot at a Sobelmen's burger or some Real Chili.  Great chance to post game at one of the area watering holes.  See you there I hope.

Cirque du Soleil has the BC booked. They had a waiver from the NCAA not to count it in the official numbers.

Have they petitioned the NCAA not to count our games against teams from Omaha as well? Be nice to wipe three losses off the register.

The attendance is going to suck for those games. Embarrassingly so.

Wisconsinites have repeatedly shown little desire to attend a "late" game that tips at 8 PM local time on a weeknight, even if a worthwhile opponent is in the house. So I'd expect around 6-8,000 real people for NoDak. Regarding Morgan, no shot anyone is there. Same time as a Packers game where they may lose the division title on last day of regular season? I'd peg it at 4-6,000 real people.

As a season ticket holder, who has not missed a game this year, I am just taking this one off.  Buying a ticket for a random opponent on top of all the games I already go too is not that enticing.  I think that is part of the problem getting full sellout as I am not the only one with this view.

Yep, that's my thinking too.  I've been to the Al to watch many Fish Fry scrimmages .. it's interesting, sure.  Would like to see a whole 40 game there, with a packed crowd.   But no thanks.

I'm half irked the game wasn't included in the SEASON ticket package, and half pleased that I can decide not to spend $80 on the umpteenth cupcake I've had to eat over the past decade.

I'm in the exact same boat.  Not that this is some crazy amount of money, but I'm not in any hurry to shell out more to watch another low level D-1 program, regardless of venue.

Topper, you're smarter than that.  The Al holds 3,700 folks.  MU's season ticket base exceeds 12,000.  So you include it exactly how?  While I agree that MU Athletics made a mistake in retrospect by limiting season ticket holders to two seats initially, I'm growing fatigued by the lame excuses folks are coming up with for not going.  There are now multiple ways to make this roughly the cost of going to a movie.  And for the students in the MKE area, you can go for free.

By the way, all staff, students etc were given the code PACKTHEAL a few days ago to be used when purchasing tickets on gomarquette dot com discounted to $10.  I suspect it'll work for each and every one of you.  If Bill Scholl gets po'ed, tough.

At that price I am assuming they would be losing money after paying the opponent. I am not sure they are making money at $42 per ticket.

They should have done this at the time of the season ticket invoice.  By that I mean, when we were initially invoiced ask people to check if they are interested in adding the "game at the AL" and note that not all orders would not be granted.  Then for those with priority, that wanted tickets, the cost just gets added to the overall invoice and most of us just go about our day.

At this point I personally would rather put $80 towards the start of a decent dinner than go to another MU game.  I'm not saying in any way that others shouldn't feel completely the opposite, it is just the idea of going to the wallet vs. it all being taken at the start of the year.

Given MU practices in the AL, it should be their best played game. There has to be a greater team comfort level at the AL than BMO Harris. The home court advantage must be at least 10 points, if the home court advantage at BMO Harris is 4.

Certainly a thought but not sure about the timing of our season ticket package vs. the announcement of the Alabama A&M game.

Look everyone, Marquette made a few mistakes here.  We can all agree.  But this is our school and our team playing a game in a unique venue that'll be broadcast on FS1 on a Friday night.  You can make an evening of it around campus.  Chick and I plan to.  I'll even let you buy her a beer.  You guys are starting to sound like a lame student who can't carve out 2 hours because he has a paper due in 7 days.  And I just told you how to get this done for the price of a movie.  By the way, The Interview is cancelled so scratch that.

See you Friday.

I'll be in Tampa this weekend, returning Tuesday, so I'm missing the North Dakota game. I'm hoping they flex the Packers-Lions to 3:00 PM so I can go to the MU game and DVR the Packers while only missing the first 10 minutes.

Realistically there could be three games that get flexed to SNF. Packers-Lions. Bengals-Steelers. Panthers-Falcons. Going to depend on what happens this week, but as of now all three of those games are at noon and I would bet that one of them ends up at 3:25 and one ends up on SNF

I believe in the last week of the season that two of these could be flexed to the 3:20 start time cause both CBS and Fox run double headers.

I think that GB v. Detroit will be a lot more interesting for NBC than the Falcons v. Panthers.  Probably more than Pittsburgh v. Cincy.

I would guess that if all three of those games mean something, two will be in the late afternoon and one at night. Regardless, the chance that Det-GB gets flexed is high

I'm not sure if you've mathed or not. But have you seen the Al compared to the BC? They couldn't put it in everyone's season tickets.

Too bad Murphys and cafs are the only two options. I was talking to someone my mom teaches with yesterday and she's a Marquette grad who talked about naked beer slides at the Lanche. Wish I was around for those days.

Splinters Chitown, splinters.

Those took place, for the most part, after BOTTLES of $.50 RWB were banned at the Lanche.

Um, they were actually 3 for a buck, as I recall.  Good times.

Called the ticket office looking for a ticket to the game.
They said they were available for $32.
While I think it would be cool to go, IMHO seems like a lot.

After graduation, my dad had come up to move me back home. Took him to the 'lanche for the last night. Best memory watching him slam the RWBs and then smash it on the floor as was the tradition back then.

At that price I am assuming they would be losing money after paying the opponent. I am not sure they are making money at $42 per ticket.

It's no longer about ticket revenue.  It hasn't been in years.  Otherwise, Nova and StJ wouldn't be playing any games at the Pavillion and Carny.

Please understand that I do not intend to be condescending here by any stretch, but I'm curious as to whether those amongst the "no thanks" crowd have ever seen an MU game that wasn't played in a multipurpose arena (e.g. MECCA, BC, etc.... basically any place that can host Monster Jam)?

Seriously, if you have no interest in going to see MU play a regular season game at the Al, then do yourself a favor and go watch another team play a game at the Joyce, Hinkle, Pavilion, Gampel, Zoo, MAC, etc.... somewhere where the people on the opposite side of the arena can hear you yelling at them.  The atmosphere at games in small arenas can be unreal; conversely, basketball in the BC or MECCA is so sterile.  I don't care who the opponent is... if the game counts and MU is playing, you'd have to be dead to not feel some level of electricity as you walk into the Al tomorrow night.

It's like sex. It doesn't matter who your partner is... the real question is do you want a) the romantic partner who isn't afraid of intimacy and makes you feel like you're actually part of the action or b) the apathetic partner who doesn't say a word waiting for you to finish so she can go play with the monster trucks?

Benny, I agree with you here.  As many games as I've been to at the Bradley Center and how exciting many of those have been, I think my all time favorite was watching the Maui Invitational in that small gym.

And yeah, part of it may be because "I was in Hawaii".  But that environment was absolutely amazing.  Even when we lost on that buzzer beater to Butler in the first game, as disappointing as it was, it was still so, so awesome.

I've been clamoring for a game at the Al for years now, I am so disappointed that I will not be able to attend this one.  Really wishing it was one of the later games when I'll be back in the midwest for the holidays and within driving distance.

Cirque du Soleil has the BC booked. They had a waiver from the NCAA not to count it in the official numbers.

MU was also trying to schedule a higher level game that fell through late so it wasn't included in the season tickets.  They needed to cover the buy costs so they put a high face value on the ticket price, and then tried to put some lipstick on this pig by hosting at the Al.  8PM start, students off, Friday, bench seats for half.  Woof.  Woof

I never understood the argument for not going because its a weak opponent. If its a Marquette game, I want to be there.
Dam straight. However, its always nice to see  2 QUALITY teams playing instead of one vs a farmboy team.

Anyone know what time the doors open? I'm assuming it is first come first serve by section, right?

The next three games will build confidence and allow all 8 to work out some of kinks before BE play. May not be exciting to watch but it could not come at a better time for the team's development, particularly Cohen and Taylor.

Not so.  When I bought our seats, I was told that I got "Lower level, chairbacks".  However, when I actually printed out my tickets, they had section, row, and seat numbers.

Due to scheduling conflicts, the Marquette University men's basketball team will play its first-ever regular-season game at the Al McGuire Center against Alabama A&M on Dec. 19.
The Al McGuire Center is Marquette's on-campus facility with a seating capacity of 3,700. The women's basketball and women's volleyball teams play their home games there, while the men's basketball team uses the facility for practice.
In 2004, Marquette played Lewis University there in an exhibition game, which is the only other time the Golden Eagles have played a game a the Al McGuire Center.
Marquette does not anticipate a game at the Al McGuire Center becoming an annual event. Date conflicts with the BMO Harris Bradley Center (capacity of 18,850 for college basketball) and the need for a non-conference home game forced the move to the smaller facility.
"Playing in the Al provides our guys with a unique experience and our entire program is excited for the game," Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski said.  "We are looking forward to playing in a great environment in front of a sellout crowd of dedicated Marquette fans."
The game at the Al McGuire Center will not be included in the season ticket plan. Tickets will be available to season ticket holders during a pre-sale from Sept. 29 through Oct. 3. Due to the limited seating capacity, season ticket holders will be limited to purchasing two tickets.  Student ticket information will be released at a later date.

Two years ago chick and I road-tripped to Joyce.  Last year to Hinkle.  While MU lost both games, the crowd was electric.  Very fun despite the outcome.  Very much looking forward to tonight.

I am sure the upper seats at the AL would be like row 25 in the lower bowl at the BC. My point is there are no bad seats at the Al.
