Ouch that hurts. I didn't know Goergetown was in It. Good for you being ahead of the curb.

Oh I didn't see that thank you so much.

I admire your classy responses to what were pretty much unnecessary condescending posts.

And for what it's worth - your post does add some value - as some were speculating it was simply between us and Cal...and there were originally 6 schools on his list. Baylor has been eliminated...and it escapes me right now the other school that didn't make the cut.

It would have helped if you had mentioned the new twitter post before your fourth post, and why start a new thread?  I believe that those were the cause of the way your thread was received.

I stopped reading the thread on Haanif when it had nothing to do with Haanif.
Thanks Johnny.

Admittedly there was some great information about shoes in it.

Has there been any reports of how the visit went? Usually someone writes and article about such things

Yeah because scoop has been SO busy lately. It's gonna be really hard to find all of the pertinent information on the front page now...all because of this thread.

One of my buddies is a manager for the team and I talked to him yesterday.
He said typical protocol for visits like that is that the entire team (coaches, managers, players) plus the recruit and his family go to Wojo's house for lunch the day after the recruit sees campus, the Al, the Bradley Center.

As for Haanif, my buddy said he was really reserved (pretty typical for a recruit in a setting he's not familiar with) but that he seemed to really enjoy the visit in general and hit it off with the current guys on the team as the visit went on. Haanif commended MU for being very "family-oriented" in terms of close relationships and get-togethers like that at Wojo's place with everyone on the team involved. (Honestly, super refreshing to hear that because I was a student manager my freshman year under Buzz and that wasn't an impression any recruit would be under. Wojo has gone above and beyond to make every person in the program feel valuable. An actual quote from the guy who now works for Wojo as a manger: "I actually enjoy coming into work now. Wojo has changed pretty much everything")

In regards to Henry, and I know people here have sources that have indicated similar things, and Mark Miller tweeting positive things has been great as well, but my buddy said the staff is really confident in landing Henry. Not only because of Wally, but because of the familiarity with others too (Nick, being close to home, etc.) and his relationship with Wojo being maybe the biggest thing. So who knows, just wanted to pass along some things I'd heard. Both encouraging, and let's really hope these two guys commit. Couldn't ask for a better first few months if we land them. In Wojo We Trust.

The irony of this is that Bert made his humble origins as a student manager the foundational bedrock of his personal narrative. Looks like it is just so much more bull sh!t from another con artist. I hope that f ucking phony crashes and burns at VPI.

This feeling is not reserved only for the managers, it is universal over there.  Not many people sad to see Bert and his act go bye bye (nor were they sad to see the previous guy go, either).  I said that a few months ago when he left, as there was a giant collective sigh and internal celebration.  More happy to hear you confirm about Wojo, as that has also been consistent with what I have heard.  Hopefully that continues.  It's easy to be that way before your first season, the stress can change people.

I agree with everything you write here, but it is also important to remember that treating everyone nice doesn't correlate with winning.  I have worked with a couple very successful coaches who are attention-seeking, needy, and drive everyone crazy.  No doubt if they left a lot of people would be relieved on some level.  But if the successor doesn't win, everyone would want those guys back.

I have also worked with coaches who are both.  Hopefully Wojo can be one of those guys.

But..... the tape does show good shooting form and a quick 1st step.

Not to just be a contrarian, but there were several instances in that video where he finished with his right hand.  And had great ballhandling coming out of a spin move with his right hand.  Were there tons of right hand finishes, certainly not, but how many times do you expect to see a right handed player finish with his left hand in a mix-tape...

If you watch this video and then listen to the interview(posted in other thread) it gives a very clear indication that this young man knows exactly what he is doing on the floor. He would be a very good recruit for us.  Would be nice to get one that Georgetown wants.

Would like Jay bee's take on this.

I see no way we are #2 if we get cheatum and Ellenson. Probably top 5, but we won't beat Arizona, Louisville, or Duke. And we all know Kentucky always get their players.

I'm pretty sure it just means we would have the #2 class as of right now if they both committed. I think this potential class will end up being in the 5-10 range when all is said and done.

That's what I figured, but I think we'd be #4 now - not #2. And Kentucky will be ahead of us at the end as well.

I just used the class calculator on 247sports because I was curious and we would be #2 with 50.03 points, only behind Arizona. I fully expect that Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, etc, would pass us. Looking at the past few years, 50.03 points would put us right about #9 at the end.

Not close to #2 when all said and done. But good enough players to make us #2 or #1 in the nation in due time!

10-15? Maybe even a little better? Sure.

Not close to #2 when all said and done. But good enough players to make us #2 or #1 in the nation in due time!

10-15? Maybe even a little better? Sure.

Classes that are in that range based on ESPN:

#14 2009: Cadougan #76, Maymon #79, Williams #95, Mbao, Buycks and DJO

#17 2010: Blue #31, Jones #53, Smith, Crowder, Gardner

#12 2013: Johnson #27, Wilson #53, Burtion #39, Dawson, and McKay

Now maybe it's just me but Heldt, #49 Noskowiak, #78Cheatham, and #5 Ellenson seem like they'd be loads better than all of those.

We got S-16, S-16, E8 out of those first two classes.   May we land them both and Wojo be as successful.

I hope we get more than Haanif and Cheathum.

Even if we get those 2, MU will have 13 scholarship players.  Considering MU would have 4 Frosh, 3 Sophs (1 transfer, 1 redshirt), 5 juniors ( 2 who are transfers), I do not see any transfers except maybe one (Cohen), and why think him, from Wisconsin.  So I see no one leaving at all.  Signs those 2 and says good-night to the others he is tracking.  I wonder the following year
when he only has 1 scholarship available and he already has Sam Hauser in his sight.  All I know in 3 years a line-up of:

Fisher
Ellenson
Burton
Wilson
Cheatham or JJJ

Throw in some good back-ups, they should be really good.  Now they all have to pan out and think about there rankings in High School but there improvement in College.  Hope they can
play D, lots of offensive talent.  Can they play together as well??  Big question marks.

Interesting that the best two players in this class turned out to be the ones who weren't ranked coming out of high school.

We are also assuming that Haanif and Henry would be it. We are in on a couple of other top 100 players. Wojo may elect to oversign or players could decide to transfer or go pro.
Wouldn't that be somewhat of a bad idea due to the fact that if WOJO over signs hes basically telling someone they got to go. Is that bad or does it not really matter.

often times those top rankings go to the larger classes.  with a 4 man class of those 4 players i couldnot care less where the class is ranked.  falling behind a 7 player class with say 3 top 100 kids is an abberation of the system

Well, maybe I gave Gardner the slight edge over Blue because he was at Marquette for 4 years and had a really nice senior season while Vander was off not playing in the NBA. But I wouldn't argue with anybody who would rank Blue ahead of Gardner.

Really?  Blue was a better college player in his 3 years, than was Gardner through 3 years..or even 4?  Blue was awful as a freshman.  Not much better as a sophomore.  Improved mightily as a junior - yet side by side Junior year to Junior year - I'm hard pressed to say Vander Blue was a better player.  Vander had some big moments as a junior for sure, yet given that he was so bad as a freshman/sophomore - it made his junior year seem better than it really was. As has been pointed out numerous times - his junior year was really no better than was Todd Mayo's last year.  Here's Gardner and Blue side by side as Juniors:

You are completely ignoring the defensive side of the court again.

Regardless, I think it is pretty hard to compare the two of them.  You have a defensive oriented perimeter player who had to improve a ton just to get to "decent" on the offensive end, versus a offensive oriented post player who was a weak defender.

I loved Gardner. He was a unique and highly efficient offensive specialist. But for most of his career he could only play limited minutes because he was so out of shape. And he was a bad defensive player, in part due to lack of quickness/athleticism/jumping ability, in part because he was so gassed he took time off on the defensive end. He had some games (he was awesome against Syracuse his junior year) where he was our MVP.

Blue wasn't ready for prime time as a freshman and our expectations of him were much too high. His sophomore season was uneven. But in his junior year he was the best player on BOTH ends of the court and undisputed MVP of a team that shared the Big East regular season championship and reached the Elite 8. And in the biggest games (St Johns, Davidson, Butler, etc.) he put us on his back and dragged us across the finish line.

Blue led us to our second best season in 37 years. Gardner was a very good offensive player who played limited minutes. No contest, IMO.

If we land Haanif and Henry to add to Heldt and NN and I think we end up around 5 or 6 in the class rankings. Throw in Levin and big bro Ellenson and the class is as good as all but maybe Arizona and Kentucky and considering both those schools will lose guys to the NBA after one season, our group is potentially better long term.

Again with the "Vander is awful" crap? Ugh.

We saw the definition of awful guards last season. Vander? He made a difference defensively and had some moments offensively his first two years.

He was poor offensively most of his freshman year, but that is pretty common. To say he didn't get much better as a sophomore is wrong. He improved his shooting percentages across the board to go along with 4.5 rebounds, more than a steal a game and usually defending the opponent's best perimeter player. He played 26 minutes per game for a Sweet 16 team - and thank goodness because your boy Mayo was a selfish jerk.

A whole lot of teams would take Blue's sophomore year. And we know what Vander did as a junior - he worked hard to become a much better offensive player on a team that had numerous options and he carried us to our biggest wins.

I don't know why you have such a "hate woody" (as willie would say) for Vander. His body of work for us was good. Not great, but good. A three-year starter on a team that went S16-S16-E8 and a player who worked hard to get better every year.

We should be lucky enough to have lots of "awful" players like Vander Blue.

BTW, unlike you, who rants against Blue constantly, this was my first strong defense of Vander. And I won't repeat it 500 times because that's not how I roll. You go ahead and keep calling him "awful," though.

He said he was "awful" as a freshman. And he was. Put me in the camp that Gardner was a better player than Vander. And I say that while thanking Blue for his heroic shots vs. St. John's and Davidson (games in which he played poorly) and his epic game against Butler.

Oh come on.  Davante Gardner a better basketball player than Vander Blue?  Sorry, but that's silly.

He was a better low-post scorer (duh, he had 5 inches and 100 lbs on Vander).  He could be a talented passer.  He couldn't move, jump, rebound (unless it came right to him), run up and down the court or play even a lick of defense unless his guy had the ball and was trying to back him down.  If he wasn't scoring, he let it affect the rest of his game and he wasn't doing much of anything else.

Davante was pretty much a one trick-pony...good thing for him that his one trick happens to align with what fans equate with being a good basketball player.

Vander was/was becoming very good at just about everything you can do in the game of basketball.

Vander will probably make an NBA roster again and hopefully will stick this time.  Gardner I would say has no chance...watching him in Summer League made that pretty obvious.

He had 2 inches and a hundred pounds on Vander, not 5.   Gardner was a one-trick pony.   We was a very efficient low block scorer.   And there is nothing wrong with that.   But he was not great on both ends, he was not a great rebounder (a fair % of his boards came off of his own miss), and he wasn't a leader.   Blue played both ends of the floor, led, and wanted the ball at crunch time.

Gardner was an elite caliber offensive player at the college level.  Vander Blue was not an elite defender, nor an elite offensive player at any point in his career.  Finding an elite offensive player at this level is a hell of a lot harder than finding a really good defender.  Yes, Blue was a better defender.  Vander made great strides his Junior year and turned into a very good player.

I never said Vander was an awful player - other than his freshman year - he was given AMPLE opportunity to play - 20 minutes a game - and his production was poor.   And his defense as a freshman?  Okay, average maybe?  Certainly not Jerel McNeal good.  Here's Gardner and Blue as freshman.

Blue really only had one good year at MU, his freshman and soph year were below average for the ranking he came out of high school with.  Then again most of these kids are over-hyped and
do not live up to there press clippings, ie.  Brian Butch, McD's All-American.  Blue made a couple big shots his junior year and had a few outstanding games, he needed another year in college.  His improvement was impressive, but had a long way to go.  Gardner offensively was very good, no D, no rebounding and seemed a little lazy.  Wes Unseld body but not his game.
Worked on Offensive skills but did not want to rebound.  Wes was a rebounding savant, like Dennis Rodman.  Cheatham will be nice addition to the program, but needs to put on some weight
like Sandy Cohen.  Will get a chance to play a little as a freshman but competition will be there.  Will have time to grow into the program.

First of all, I liked Gardner and I actually said that, based on his 4 years in the program (to Vander's 3), he probably was the "better" player. I don't want to slam Davante, but when your center pretty much only gets rebounds by accident, can't block a shot, can't defend 1-on-1 and can't make a dunk, we're not talking about an all-around player.

Second, in this comment, you say: "I never said Vander was an awful player - other than his freshman year ... "

Just a few comments earlier, however, you said: "Blue was awful as a freshman. Not much better as a sophomore."

I guess, technically, you "never" said Blue was awful, except as a freshman. But you did say he was "not much better" than awful as a sophomore, which of course isn't true.

I just don't understand what joy you get out of tearing down Blue at pretty much every opportunity. He was a valuable contributor to a S16-S16-E8 team, as was Davante. Is it impossible for you to make an argument for your case without completely trashing somebody?

Ners, you know I don't usually rip you. I do poke fun sometimes but I actually agree with you more times than not. I just wish you could find a way to make your points without being so over the top.

Vander wasn't awful as a freshman.  He was awful on the offensive side, but he was a better than average defender.  No he wasn't McNeal good then...but he was a better defender than Jerel by the time he was a junior.

But as I said earlier, it is hard to compare two players with opposite strengths and weaknesses that play opposite positions.  Marquette doesn't make last year's E8 without either one of them.

I'm also not a big fan of hypotheticals because there is no right or wrong answer but lots of folks think they know the right answer.

Having said all that ... last season's team had Gardner but no Blue. A lot more went into us biting the big one, but that fact is indisputable.

Getting to be a real soap opera, when a HS kid announcing his commitment to a college gets TV coverage.
Sort of like the Real Housewives of Anywhere.

It is a big event for the high school and the family. Technology makes a lot of things possible today. The kids at the school get to produce an event etc.

I can remember when I went to Earvin Johnsons press conference to announce where he would go to school. In those stone age times there were probably 100 press people and others in a high school auditorium and the local TV channels had their film teams there.  It was fun .

Gardner was an elite caliber offensive player at the college level.

Not even close to elite. He was a good offensive player.

What are there, 355 D1 teams? Ask those 355 coaches this question - if you were starting your program from scratch and your first pick had to be Blue or Gardner who would you take? The final score would be Blue 355, Gardner 0. No way any of them would take a one way, out of shape part time player over an all around guy who's a borderline NBA player. Not one.

I disagree. It is much more difficult to find a post player than it is an athletic guard. You are making it sound like Gardner was some scrub. How many game plans do you think revolved around stopping Blue...I would venture more teams were worried about stopping Gardner than Blue.

And yet when we have "elite" big men we miss the NCAA and NIT, and when we have elite guards we make runs into the 2nd weekend of NCAA Tournaments.  So I think the guard would go first.

I don't think that is accurate at all.  You have to evaluate character, maybe you want the kid for 4 years and not shorter, what does he provide on the defensive end, how much easier is it to find another guard that may not be as good but pretty close vs finding another post player that is pretty close.

Not even close to elite. He was a good offensive player.

I would say he had the potential to be an elite player. As everyone who has played basketball knows, when one person does better it makes it easier for everyone else.

Last season our offense was blatantly centered around feeding Gardner and when we had no perimeter pressure the other team's guards would rotate down and double him.
I honestly think Gardner would have had an amazing season for a team like UW last year. He would of feasted with all the shooters on that team. But, it is truly all hypothetical, I just found myself sympathizing for Davante when he got doubled and even triple teamed when no one on the roster could hit the wide open 3's.

I've got an idea... let's make mom jokes about a top 75 recruit who will be signing with us in two months.  Idiots.

What is God's name is that supposed to mean?   I squirm in my chair because of how Bert recruited, I have zero concerns about this young man.  Welcome to MU.

Please Wades...I like you, don't start bathing in what Lenny bathes in of late.

Haha relax, I didn't think teal was necessary.  I was just thinking about Heldt and how a year ago he would've been a better fit for Wisconsin than for Marquette, but this roster is changing.  The type of players we will see are much different than those that we have seen with Buzz.  Wojo has gotten Noskowiak, Heldt, Wally, Gabe, and Carlino to commit to playing for him, along with Cohen.  A lot of "traditionals" in that group of players.  I would argue Cheathum plays like a "traditional" as well.  I don't have a problem with it.

I imagine Chicos and most administrators are more concerned if they go to class and stay on the straight and narrow like "traditionals".

I figured it was a joke....should be an interesting team the next few years.  In my view, you are exactly right...a lot of traditionals....kids that can play basketball first, athletes second.  Shoot the ball, fundamental defense, etc, etc.  Looking forward to it.

Hey Mods...

Change this title from HANNIF to HAANIF!

I know we're getting used to it but let's master it now instead of later!
