Title: Buycks turns down Clippers and Lakers invites to go Euro

Prior to making the decision to head overseas, second-year point guard Dwight Buycks turned down an offer from the Los Angeles Clippers to join them in training per David Pick of Eurobasket.com

Spending his collegiate years at Marquette, Buycks got his first taste of the NBA as a member of the Toronto Raptors. Appearing in 14 games, Buycks averaged 3.1 points and 1.6 rebounds during his rookie year.

The camp invite to Buycks gives fans some sense of direction in regards to what the Clippers may do with the finals roster spot. With a third point guard, the Clippers would be providing themselves point guard insurance. Last season, Chris Paul and the recently-signed Jordan Farmar missed a combined 61 games. Due to the two’s injury history, it’s difficult marking off the missed games as an anomaly, especially with Farmar whose injuries were of the recurring fashion.

With Buycks out of the picture, the leading guard candidate for a camp role has to be Delonte West. He’s familiar with Doc Rivers‘ system and is a veteran combo guard whose skills play off that of Paul and Farmar. In a recent interview, Doc Rivers made it clear he was unsure if West would be invited to camp, but it makes too much sense to bring West along for the ride.

There’s no true learning curve for West outside of him having to adjust to those surrounding him. He’s familiar with the NBA and know what it takes to be an effective player in the league. And if Paul or Farmar suffer an injury, West stepping into the lineup would allow for a seamless transition.

Peyton Siva, former Detroit Pistons point guard, could be another name the Clippers have their eyes on for a camp invite.

It's hard not to imagine Buycks would have made the Clippers roster pretty easily.

Doc and Buycks: would have been a nice run.

Is it more $ to star in Spain than to ride pine in the NBA?

(serious question; I know nothing about the finances of international bball)

His contract was not guaranteed for the upcoming season in Toronto, and he was waived before the guarantee for next season kicked in.

Last year he cleared about $750K with the Raptors.  Not sure about Spanish salaries but what a wonderful city to call home for season -- along with a guaranteed paycheck

The Spanish ACB is the top European league competition and salaries wise.  And Valencia is a Euroleague club which means they are one of the top teams with associated money (think Soccer clubs getting Champions League money to spend on expensive transfers, but on a smaller scale).  Given that most of the salaries are net income, once you factor that in, I would be that he will be making similar, if not maybe more given that he's an expected starter.

Why not just keep Buycks? Not like he was going to make that much $ this year.   ?-(

Raptors sign Will Cherry to two-year deal

The Raptors signed Will Cherry to a two-year deal.
It's at the minimum and for the second year in a row the Raptors sign a point guard who impressed at summer league. They already waived Dwight Buycks earlier this month, so Cherry essentially takes his place and could fall on the depth chart as the third point guard. He performed very well at summer league, averaging 12.8 points, 4.0 boards, 3.0 assists and 0.2 steals on 52.1 percent from the field.

Will Cherry: DOB 02/08/1991

Dwight Buycks: DOB 03/06/1989

I agree with you, but it's the nature of the NBA beast. They've had a year to see Buycks' game full time and assess his upside. Cherry is 2 years younger and will cost the same or less, with 2 more years of potential growth. I saw some article somewhere in which players' games grow at a much faster rate in the teens/early twenties and that rate of improvement slows down significantly around age 24/25. Two years doesn't seem like a lot, but in the early 20's for an NBA borderline player it's a huge difference in the value teams place on them.
