Title: Single Malt Scotch
Post by: NYWarrior on April 22, 2014, 04:08:30 PM
OK, the Bourbon thread is fun --- so let's talk about go-to single malt Scotch selections here.  While I do enjoy Bourbon, there's nothing like a fine single malt (I drink mine neat w/ only a few drops of water to bring out the bouquet -- sometimes with stones to cool it a bit)

Anyway, I'm a freak for Highland Park products, particularly their extraordinary 18 year (their 12 year might be the best on the market within that category).  Their Valhalla series is quite innovative too, I recently picked up a bottle of the Freya which has a rather limited distribution.

Absent Highland Park, a stand-by is the Balvenie 15 because it's easy to find on most restaurant menus -- it has a wonderful finish.

Drink up.

I'm right there with you on the Highland Park 18.Thats my go to at home.  When I'm out and don't feel like making a car payment I go for The Macallan 12. I prefer it to the 16 but do like the 25. Recently had some Macallan 1982. That was a powerful glass!. Whatever I am drinking its always neat with a water back and I agree that a wee drop of water brings out the spectacular in Uisce Beatha.

More of an Irish whiskey drinker but just had an 18yr laphroaig that was great with the cigar I was smoking.

Glenfiddich 15 or Glenlivet 18. If I don't want to drop a ton of dough, I'll settle for the fiddich 12 - also usually more available.

No whiskey stones - science says they're a bad decision. Instead, I opt for 1 big ice cube - helps cool slightly, while also having the same effect as the added water above.

For a friend that is a Scotch drinker, what is a good Scotch to get him under $100 a bottle.  Thanks.

Hey GOO, can we be friends?

There are quite a few options under $100, a lot would depend on what type of scotch he prefers.

I'm not nearly the expert that some on here are, but I'll second this.  I've enjoyed cheap (relatively) blended scotch for years.  I was convinced that I didn't like single malt because I really didn't like the only two I had ever tried (one was Glenfiddich 12 and I don't recall the other).  After reading another Scoop thread on this subject, I decided to continue experimenting.  Because it is widely available, I tried The Macallan 12 and liked it.  It tastes nothing like the other single malt's I had tried.  So, I'll agree with Tyrion...it's really hard to say because there is so much variation.  It's kind of like asking what bottle of wine you should buy someone without knowing if he likes reds, whites, etc.

We actually had pretty big single malt discussion in the beer thread.

Glenfiddich 12 is my go to. Best single malt for under $40

I enjoy a Laphroaig, or another Islay, from time to time.

Just went to a Macallan tasting. We did 10, 12, 16 and 18 year tastings. They were all excellent.

Always neat.

Unless you are getting really rare or aged stuff, every single brand of Scotch has a variety that can be had for under $100

A rock solid safe choice is the Balvenie Doublewood 12 for around $50. A superb Speyside that should appeal to any palate.

I'll third this. Never really was into scotch until I had this last year. Really good.

Thanks for all of the comments, I appreciate it.  I didn't realize that Scotch was such a personal choice (or a vice, depending upon one's outlook, I guess).

Anyway, I'll see if I can find some of the Balvenie Doublewood 12 near me.

Thanks again.

You won't regret the Balvenie. It's a nice portal but do explore for there is tremendous variety in single malt. You'll eventually settle on a couple styles that suit your palate and moods.
