Title: Real change is coming....to the NBA which should benefit college hoops
Post by: ChicosBailBonds on April 18, 2014, 02:06:38 PM
We can talk ad nauseum about unionization, and how to better than 0.5% out of the 450,000 student athletes and their horrible existence they go through now.

On the reform front, however, real change is coming.  The NBA is pushing hard for age 20 requirement.  Wait until the unfair cackles start from the high school kids on that one.  It's going to be fun to watch.  Right now the players association doesn't have a leader, but they will elect one and certainly will oppose this in some fashion.  Changes to the NBADL will also have to be made, which I'm entirely for.  If a kid doesn't want to go to school but has to wait until 20 for the NBA draft, then if the NBA wants to create a broader D League then by all means, do it.  That shouldn't be on the NCAA as that isn't the NCAAs purpose.  Then for those that don't value a great benefit in an education and all that comes with it....fine, choose something else.

Enjoying Adam Silver's reign thus far.  Worked with him a number of years ago and though he appears quiet and straight laced, one of the funnier people you will run into.  Hoping he gets this through.

There you go again with the pointless love it or leave it argument. You may want the NCAA to take that approach, but the schools are too addicted to the money. We'll see how much they love those 400,000 amateur athletes in sports like gymnastics and swimming when protecting them will cost the schools the athletes that make them millions.

The schools need funding for their athletic departments, so from that stand point they love the money just like any other operation.  They are required to have 14 sports to remain D1, it requires money.

I don't think the players association will be as opposed as you think. I won't be surprised of they are pushing for it. If there are fewer players eligible that means salaries go up and teams take less flyers on players. In addition, the veterans will benefit because they can stay on as the last guy on the bench versus a 19 yr who is getting league minimum.

Yup, which is exactly why they won't position themselves on the moral high ground in order to protect swimmers and gymnasts. They will make changes to accommodate football and bball players, because the market demands it.

If you a $10M athletic budget and 16 teams, you are already running in the red and you now add another $1M to $2M in cost, what's going to happen?

They're going to drop some teams.  You're right, they are going to protect the revenue streams and guess what happens to the other opportunities....bye bye.  In the end, more kids will lose opportunities to go to school on athletic scholarship to accommodate the very few.  It's pure economics.  I agree they are going to make that decision and that's the sad part, a lot of kids will pay the price as a result.
