This is HUGE...considering who Shaka turned down previously....and that he obviously feels MU is a place he can win big at...and he's got the credibility with the Final Four under his belt already, 4 strong seasons in a row at VCU...and a ton of cred with young recruits.

Pretty much IWB tweeted earlier today that Marquette and Smart had a deal. Then someone else tweeted about a news conference at 5 PM which IWB said wasn't happening not that fast. Then IWB tweeted again saying the deal was in fact done but there isn't a confirmation when the press conference is to my knowledge

So far Marquette has countered speculation/rumors on a potential investigation, released a statement that there was no imminent announcement, and then they shared on Facebook the AP article where Cords essentially says there is strong interest, but they are following the process. Do you expect them to respond to each individual tweet? I'm glad Marquette is working to get a coach and not wasting time responding to all the craziness here.
Furthermore perhaps Marquette is holding their cards so Shaka can be the one to inform his team so the players do not learn from ESPN and thus offend all MUScoopers that Shaka did not follow the proper process for leaving and therefore we must be disgusted before he even arrives on campus.

Do you have any confirmation or sources? At the end of the day, he may or he may not come to MU. Frankly I think most of us would be just as happy with Howland. That said, why did you come here and post? I suspect you're actually nervous and are just trying to make yourself feel better.

Mike Hopkins is the coach in waiting at Cuse. That spot is filled.
Roy at UNC has a decade or more left. Ditto Donovan, Self and Calipari as the are all young.
So, you're right he would be a good candidate for one of those jobs, but they are not opening anytime soon, maybe not for a decade.

I'm hearing from reliable sources that if Shaka comes to marquette, hill stays, if not, then he's going to Va Tech..makes sense in the fact that he hasn't asked for his release yet. That's all I am hearing down this way in Augusta and the info is from reliable sources. I'll update again if I hear anything else.

You claim to have been through this several times as a fanbase. Imagine dealing with annoying Illinois trolls for days as their local media said Shaka was definitely going to Champaign. Multiply that with Maryland, NC St, UCLA, Va Tech and all their fans- once or twice every year.
It's a sense of annoyance, not entitlement. Could he go to MU? Sure. Do I trust those VCU sources who confirm he's not? Yes, because they've never been wrong on Shaka before.
I'm sure some on here are well tuned to MU's AD, and I'm sure the department is doing everything possible to woo him, feeling confident. I'll trust those sources who've dealt with Shaka before. Plus he was just in the Fan late afternoon/early evening here in Richmond.

Frankly, we've been through this before with Buzz too. After he turned down SMU and Oklahoma we were lulled into believing he wasn't going anywhere and many of us, including me, laughed at the notion that he would suddenly bolt for a program like Virginia Tech, just like the posters at the VCU board are doing now. Then, boom - Buzz was gone. You just can't rely on past behavior to predict what any coach is going to do. Every new offer is different. And every coach will move on at some point. Let's just hope Shaka's ties to Wisconsin are the deciding factor that makes this situation different from his previous offers.

You don't have to tell me the benefits of the Marquette job. I'm a life-long fan. I've slurped the gold & blue kool-aid for many years. I'll go to bat for the program any day of the week, as I have done over on the VCU forum many times.
Duke and UNC aren't the only options though. Who knows what his ultimate goal is. In an ideal world, he'd jump to Marquette. There are so many other factors at play here though. I don't think his preferred career progression has to necessarily include a stop in Milwaukee.
In regards to the Chicago recruiting, this bit came out after he turned down the Illinois job:

VCU's coach in waiting Mike Rhodes, is an assistant coach on staff. When Shaka leaves, VCU has raised Rhodes salary repeatedly to keep him around for eventually taking over the reigns.
So VCU telling their assistant coaches to clear out, would be pretty idiotic, and alienate many players and recruits in the VCU pipeline. Safe to say you reading a football board, to learn about this situation, is akin to me watching the E! Network for reliable updates on the situation in Crimea.

It's how routine you make it seem that these bottom feeder programs like Illinois, Minnesota, UCLA, and Marquette come in every year and tray to swoon your coach away, but pssssht there's no chance in hell he'd go to one of those piss ant schools. Basically, yes. It is that routine for them. They deal with "Shaka to ____" probably on average twice an offseason. If Buzz had turned down UCLA and nothing else changed since then I'd be confident that he would have stayed at MU too.

Anyway, your argument is a fallacious one. Using terms such as "bottom feeder" and "piss ant" that no one in particular have ever stated. And yes, there is no chance he would go to any of those schools because he turned all of them down. I still fail to see your point in that regard. When the right opportunity comes along, Shaka will leave. No one is denying it. They will probably be upset and act accordingly though, just like fans on this forum or any other sports board. This whole mess disgusts me. Either MU is botching this whole thing and it will blow up in their faces or Smart is playing all sides and giving the decision makers at MU false hope. How in the hell does all this false info get leaked to reliable sources, (not talking about the trolls).

I have lowered expectations after this media circus. I honestly don't think marquette has done anything wrong. Yet, at least. They have been quiet and are hopefully sealing the deal with a coach whether it is smart or Howland, or whoever.

My guess is that the source is some booster or relation of a board member. If the source doesn't work out IWB can always throw him under the bus or say negotiations fell apart later on. It's probably the same source miller and van vooren talked to.
Odds are some trigger event happened yesterday ranging from the boosters making Shaka the top target to sending a contract to his lawyers. Remember there was rumbling of buzz going to VT as early as Monday and nothing was certain until Friday. I don't think we will wait that long to find out but it's not going to be right away

I figured the news would leak from commits and their families, as they aren't on campus and easier to let information slip.
I saw several posters on here wanted to gloat on VCU boards after Shaka came to MU. I'm leaving this board, unless VCU becomes a target for expansion in the BE again.
Good luck on your search, I hope you find the right candidate. I'm sure many will say that they didn't even want Shaka after this is all said and done (happened on my other teams site, Gopher Hole).
Marquette has a lot to offer, and shouldn't be sweating it out. Basketball only schools need to stick together.

we Marquette should be embarrassed or become a laughingstock. You search for a coach; you make your inquiries; select a target; make a pitch; get a decision and go from there. The fans are the ones who created the frenzy and it was fun to participate in. Move on to the next one and repeat.

Just as a free piece of advice....don't make the same mistake we've made in the past especially with Buzz. We laughed at rumors of Buzz going to places such as SMU, Auburn, and Virginia Tech....turns out he absolutely was flirting with those teams but for whatever reason didn't pull the trigger until VaTech.
There is something to this story, doesn't mean Smart is leaving VCU this time, but there is enough smoke here to indicate Smart is talking to MU. At some point there will be a rumor you casually dismiss that will turn out to be true. Some little Philly's going to break your heart.

Serious question: could iwb be correct? And marquette and Shaka wanted to do it the right way behind the scenes with all players(schools, players, lawyers, etc) involved and set a certain timetable for those things along with an announcement without him actually playing more than one side?
I have no idea. This is what I'm hoping for and that various media outlets are just jumping the fun before marquette and Shaka wanted them to.
If he was serious about coming here and this gets botched by marquette, that would be disturbing. Either way, I'm not getting my hopes up for him. I do hope he is our next head coach. Howland would be fine as well but after all of this, I sure as hell hope he is our coach.

That information trickled down to Marquette employees and spread from there. The information was specific enough that there was a rough timetable as to when things were (maybe still are) to unfold.
If it doesn't happen, that doesn't mean that many, many people at Marquette were not lead to believe otherwise. The person I talked to is super smart, super decent, and very modest. If they said the timetable was what they knew, then that's what it was.
THAT is one thing I will never back down on, and all the VCU fans in the world can never convince me otherwise. If they want to believe that this was all a bunch of Cheeseheads in Milwaukeee making things up, then they certainly don't understand Marquette University and its alumni. This is the double edged sword that is the Internet.

There are a couple of leaks that can be easily explained via human nature, I don't see a vast MU AD leak conspiracy. I think all and all this is more a reflection of the media culture we live in than of anything MU did or did not do.

Agreed. I'm guilty for believing the hype. The real problem is the guy who leaked the story from the inside. He needs to be let go immediately. Created too much bad hype for Marquette and we need all the wins we can get at this point. I stuck up for IWB in the past but this is the second time he burnt me with a big story. See you loser. Try finding a career you can do well at and have some pride in. Running around acting like a know it all and spreading false rumors doesn't benefit anybody. I'm done.

Sounds like a Bob Knight to UW moment....let's see if these guys can contain themselves or does it hit the media, social, etc.
I hope it happens, but I honestly don't get what the benefit was to put any of this stuff out there in absolute terms like DONE DEAL....trying to scoop someone? I don't think there is anything beneficial whatsoever by anyone with any knowledge especially a Milwaukee media outlet tweeting that it is a done deal.
I was just asking the questions because I have no idea what is going on. The "right way" would to do it quietly without making a big fuss about it beforehand which is the opposite of what has been happening. I hope he still come here. Of he does not, we will get bother great coach to lead our team.

Leaks are going to happen, part of the world we live in. Where it goes to the next level is saying it with such conviction from several sources that are linked directly to the program but are not part of the program. I hope like hell they are right. It would be a great hire. If it isn't right, I can't help but think any leaking and definitive done deal statements were for the benefit of whom?
Interesting next 24 to 48 hours I suppose. Keeping fingers crossed that they are right.

Thanks...really fascinating stuff. At a certain point it just became a battle of "my source vs. your source" which isn't very productive. I would never say I have 100% confidence in anything involving coaching changes so I'll just play the waiting game from this point forward.

Thank you for posting this. Too many people keep writing "lol trolled so hard!!" or "we took the bait!". Well, what bait? Who's the troll? These are things that needed to be thought through. There's no troll here.
We know that a a trustworthy source within MU let this leak to Jim Ganzer. This is fact, otherwise he wouldn't have reported the deal was done. The MU Athletic Department isn't trolling the fanbase through Jim Ganzer.
We know that many other less credible (but often semi-credible) outlets reported on the story, including Jerry Meyer. It seems that the higher-ups may have let word slip to colleagues, perhaps out of exuberance.
We know that MU and Shaka Smart have had talks. Jeff Goodman said so this morning.
We know that some credible/semi-credible VCU sources deny that the deal is done. Most, perhaps all, claim that Shaka has not even had talks with MU, and that instead he was hard at work on campus yesterday. Jeff Goodman says otherwise.
No national media outlet has given a substantive update on the situation, despite some serious momentum behind rumors.

So what's going on here? Perhaps some bad reporting by a couple of otherwise trustworthy people. Perhaps some excessive confidence from high-level Marquette people and a deal was close, but not done. Perhaps a deal is signed and both sides have agreed to keep things officially quiet temporarily. Perhaps Shaka had agreed to a deal and backed off after the leak put his trust in MU's administration into question. Perhaps Shaka verbally agreed to gain leverage over VCU.

I just talked to someone close to the staff of VCU and yesterday some people were informing some family and friends about an imminent move to Milwaukee. When I talked to him again today, the source has gone quiet.
Obviously this means nothing, but FWIW this had some serious legs yesterday and his hit a wall today.

I just talked to someone close to the staff of VCU and yesterday some people were informing some family and friends about an imminent move to Milwaukee. When I talked to him again today, the source has gone quiet.
Obviously this means nothing, but FWIW this had some serious legs yesterday and his hit a wall today.

MU is a pretty premier job bud. If he stays props to smart because from what ive been hearing is that MU was planning to double his salary.

The conference smack talk from a team in a conference that had 2 of its marquee teams jump to the "watered down Big East" and still finished below the "watered down Big East", in the conference's best year ever, is pretty cute. If you guys keep Shaka, great, congratulations and I respect his loyalty but chill. Lets not forget that your Cinderella conference member in the Sweet Sixteen right now would kill its proverbial mother to get an invite to Marquette's watered down conference.

He says "some people were informing some family and friends" which does not mean there was a meeting with the entire team. I'm not saying it is true either, just that it makes it sound much more selective and couldn't necessarily be confirmed or denied by a player on the team if SS or someone else had a few private conversations.

Here is one thing I can say with absolute clarity and confidence: Shaka Smart indicated to high-level people at Marquette that he was going to take the job. That information trickled down to Marquette employees and spread from there. The information was specific enough that there was a rough timetable as to when things were (maybe still are) to unfold.
If it doesn't happen, that doesn't mean that many, many people at Marquette were not lead to believe otherwise. The person I talked to is super smart, super decent, and very modest. If they said the timetable was what they knew, then that's what it was.
THAT is one thing I will never back down on, and all the VCU fans in the world can never convince me otherwise. If they want to believe that this was all a bunch of Cheeseheads in Milwaukeee making things up, then they certainly don't understand Marquette University and its alumni. This is the double edged sword that is the Internet.
PS: I've said all that I know/heard. Out of respect for everything (and myself, I suppose) I'm refraining from saying anything further.
PPS: No matter what happens, I want to reiterate what I posted before about the very classy and decent and funny VCU fans. Good luck to you.

Trying my best. I might be coming off as a troll at this point but I'm just being honest. As I've said, if I legitimately thought there was a chance I would have stated it here. Way too many factors at play though. Still can't say it's completely out of the question, especially considering the insistence of a few that I trust but I view it as highly, highly doubtful.

It was the most entertaining 24-48 hours on chat boards for sure. I loved it! Made missing the tourney very entertaining. Shaka would have been awesome.
What's pathetic (and I'm guilty of it) is watching highlight videos and following rankings based of run and gun summer ball. Then projecting their careers at Marquette off them and ripping them if they don't fulfill.

VCU actually lost to SFA last year. They won their first game in 2012 and 2013 though.
