Let's gauge the Scoop community's preference.

Whoever wins this poll should NOT be hired.

Shaka would be my 1

but Marshall and Howland are great too.

Maybe I should have left Shaka off (he seems pretty tied to VCU), that way we could see where the Shaka votes go.

Voted for Chew - and at least some measure of continuity.

Why isn't Doc on the poll?

Why isn't Doc on the poll?

He's coaching one of the great, young NBA teams?

Neck and neck.  Either would do quite well.

I voted Steve Mansielo. Before last night I would not have had a clue who he was. Howland is the safe choice, but we will likely be watching games in the 50's &  60's with him. Steve is a former Pitino assistant who had Manhatten playing the same style of ball as Louisville. Mahatten came real close to beating Louisville last night and while watching that game I was already thinking he would be a good replacement, if Buzz left. I would love Marshal or Shaka, but realistically they are not going to MU.

Need a write-in "other" .  I think we can hire Phil Jackson away from the Knicks.

Calhoun?

He's not going to win an NC at BC.  Might we rent him for an NC?

+1

I was really impressed with Manhattan last night. Loved their smothering of Louisville's ball handlers and if it wasn't for Russ Smith's ability to get through defenders without losing the ball, Manhattan wins that game.

A reserved vote for Howland. His indifference in "losing control at UCLA" is the only reason though. Great recruiting good coach.
Mansielo would also be interesting. As much as I hate Louisville (err, Pitino) I like the way they play.

How do you not vote for Shaka?  It would surprise me more than getting Stone, less than getting Ellenson.

This. Could Howland recruit kids to Milwaukee in the new Big East? I don't think Shaka is walking through the door. Probably same with Marshall.

This is where the new conference really hurts us - with recruiting young, hungry coaches. Those coaches can get players to play for Memphis in Conference USA or for one of the teams in today's AAC. But its tough to get those coaches to take a job in a non-BCS conference in the first place. Most would rather jump straight to Northwestern or USC or Minnesota. You know, the exact type of lower-level BCS job Buzz just took.

Just had that. I'd rather have a guy who can coach during a game and have a great recruiting assistant.

While the Manhattan-Louisville game was very entertaining, I don't think it's a good idea to hire a coach based on how his team played in one nationally televised game. I would also say Manhattan did as well as they did because of Masiello's knowledge of Louisville's playbook. Now, if they had performed that well against a top school they knew much less about, that would be much more impressive.

Ditto and ultimately the recruiting starts to take care of itself.

Great point. He is completely unknown to me aside from that game.  Any closet Jasper fans out there?

It was noted many times during the telecast that Masiello was calling out Lousiville's plays to his players when Louisville was bringing the ball up the court.

Nice advantage to have.

Did he call out the Porcini Drive to the Hole Play?

He couldn't call it out before it finished.

If I recall that play is for when there is less than 15 seconds on the clock

Well. neither Conference USA or the AAC is a BCS conference, so not sure what your point is then.

And is it trendy now to bash the Big East now based on Buzz' comments? And Marquette's going to go where that's better?

because I wanted my vote to have some amount of realism attached to it. Shaka Smart is not coming to MU.

I also forgot Autry, who was undefeated as a head coach in the Old Big East.

I know this is just a friendly poll, but I will say that I don't think there is even a remote chance of Shaka leaving. We go through a similar Hiroshima-esque process down here in Richmond every offseason but the difference is that Smart continually discusses his healthy relationship with university administration and fans. As a student and friend of a few individuals very close to the program (including one player I talk with occasionally), I can state confidently that he is 100% committed. The only programs that have ever been discussed, at least as far as I know, are Ohio State, Duke, UNC and Florida. I have been told that he enjoys the recruiting process, unlike Stevens, so I'm not sure about the NBA either.

On a side note, I was told that Shaka turned down Illinois in part because of the daunting Chicago recruiting challenge. I would presume the same applies here.

Howland and Masiello are the guys to go for, IMO.

Howland.  Proven recruiter, proven winner, young enough to give us 10+ years if both sides want it, old enough that he wouldn't constantly be looking for better offers.  And his name likely helps us keep most of the frosh and incoming commits.

Don't see another name on the list that gives us all that....
