Title: Replace "I believe" with ...
Post by: HelixAir6 on February 27, 2014, 10:42:42 AM
Ok, I know there has been some debate about this...  I like the idea of the student section starting the game with a chant like this, I don't like the idea of ripping off some other crappy's school's rendition.  I don't mean for this to turn into a bashing of the student section, etc.   I would like to add, that I, unfortunately, haven't been a student for almost 8 years, so I don't know who organizes this stuff, but I applaud the efforts that they have made with the intro handclap, freethrow disruptions (for the opposing team), and adopting the idea of such a chant.

So, I propose the following... if it is lame (I don't care), it's just a thought and perhaps something to spur the students to come up with something other than Utah State's chant...

Starters: WE
Repeaters: WE

Starters: We ARE
Repeaters: We ARE

Starters: We are MARQUETTE
Repeaters: We are MARQUETTE

Starters: We are MARQUETTE (a little faster)
Repeaters: We are MARQUETTE

Starters: We are MARQUETTE (faster)
Repeaters: We are MARQUETTE

ALL: WE ARE MARQUETTE! WE ARE MARQUETTE! WE ARE MARQUETTE! (getting faster and faster) ....

For some reason, when I think about the students going nuts and jumping around to "We are Marquette" in the beginning of the game, it get's me pumped up...

Something to think about for next season?  Either way, let's finish strong, GO MARQUETTE!

That's actually not bad. Of course it requires students to actually be in the building.

New 'Grey's Anatomy' and 'Elementary'.    Could suppress the turnout in the student section.

Yes actually. Midterms, are this week and next week. Just sayin. In reference to the OP I really do appreciate your opinion and thank you for actually giving us an idea rather then our friend Sultan here. I think the only thing I would change is in between the "are" and "marquette" we could do the two claps.

Beat me to it.  Well, not new but returning from the Olympic break.  As far as the original idea, a Community-inspired response:

No way. I say we use a Gregorian-style chant version of "Warriors, come out to play-e-ay." Slow and loud, a la "Rock chalk Jayhawk," only without the cheering in between that ruins it (in my opinion). Just the chant would be eerie and unique.

The "YES" chant is simple.  Might even get the old folks who are too fashionable to wear gold to join it.

I'm sorry, but this is a pet peeve of mine.  Why is this copying UW?  We (along with every other professional sports venue) were playing that song long before it became popular at Camp Randall.

The fact Madison dwellers think people are ripping them off shows how sheltered they are.  If jumping around to a song called "Jump Around" is somehow their tradition, it also shows how unoriginal they are.  They don't "own" that song any more than some other arena "owns" playing Rock and Roll Part 2.

The "I believe" chant gets ruined half of the time when someone scores before the chant can really get going or there is a break in action.

It takes almost a minute until the whole section is chanting it and by then someone has either scored, thrown the ball out of bounce, fouled, etc. The momentum of it goes away before it even starts. Personally, I'm not a fan.

Sorry esard... part of the reason that I did not post this suggestion sooner is for fear that it would turn into a student section bash (though I think that has been somewhat limited in this thread)... I didn't want that to happen...

There are people that have opinions, let them have 'em...  At the end of the day, the students have control over the "cheerleading."  Again, I appreciate the students and fans that get their early, get their seats, set up the cheers etc. (I used to be one of them).  Unfortunately, I can't do that anymore...  Just wanted to provide a suggestion, as you (or somebody else) requested in the past.  Have fun!

Love this idea for many reasons.

1. Incorporates the late great nickname
2. References an excellent 80s movie
3. Would sound awesome in an arena

I doubt we will ever see this happen because I'm pretty sure most of the current students aren't too familiar with the movie.

All true, but they have really made it their own.  Everyone who has gone to a game at Camp Randall talks about it.  It's like people associating "All Along the Watchtower" with Jimi Hendrix - it's Bob Dylan's song, but Hendrix took it to another level and became the one known for it.  I would just rather we do something different from them.

I don't really buy the accounting exam excuse. Maybe it's because I was a science major, or maybe the fact that I took Accounting as a Junior/Senior as part of a minor played a role, but I always found the accounting exams to be a joke. I got 95+% on every one of those exams without any real studying. Compared to o-chem and p-chem exams (among others) they are a piece of cake.

The only thing remotely intimidating about them were the fact that they ran them like a boot camp.

Spot on. It does bother me that UW fans think the song originated in Camp Randall, but it's theirs now. We should just let them keep it.

That would be awesome, but I think all we'd need to pull this off is the right couple of kids getting on board. They organized I Believe, so this could be done. And the whole crowd could join in once it catches on.

I was an accounting major and tutored intro to accounting. While some kids may not have been as bright as you, it was astounding how many kids came in complaining the night before the test that they did not get it after admitting they hadn't completed the 15 mins of simple hw a night.
Put in that minimum amount of time and maybe four hours the night before/morning of and you have a solid BC if you truly struggle with the subject.

I am a CPA, and I can tell you that accounting is something that you either "get" immediately or you don't, and if you don't, it's hard.  My kid is taking accounting this semester and he is struggling with it.  It's not that he's not smart; he had a composite ACT in the 30's.  He does all the homework and studies hard.  His brain is simply not wired that way.

I have a friend whose kid says in his head, he hears rock music when he does accounting. Mine hears a funeral dirge.

I have a friend whose kid says in his head, he hears rock music when he does accounting. Mine hears a funeral dirge.

It's not your kid's fault... the education model that's been forced on millennials has wired them to memorize facts, definitions, processes, events, theorems, etc.

It used to be the case that we wired kids how to learn... you could cut your study time by 50% or more simply by going to class.  I have a good friend who tells the story about how as a 2L he sold back all but one of his textbooks at the end of the year in their original shrink-wrap, yet finished the year in the top 10% of the class; however, this was back in the mid-80s before attendance and classroom participation were part of your grade because you could absorb everything you needed during lectures and labs.

I agree. I have a big vendetta against the high school and college system. I hate GPA, it absolutely estrys students because you cant get into a good college or grad school if you dont have the grades. All schools do now a days is train you to do well for the tests. Its brutal. Honestly, this is one of the reasons I HATE school. I despise GPA and all that it stands for. It bases kids on a number, nothing about themselves. I easily learned the most in the classes ive gotten the worst grades in.

This is where you lost me.

As to the post, based on this year's meme, I propose we shorted it to "WE SLURP!" I mean, no one else has it, right? What's not to like?

So, do away with grades and give everyone a trophy? Your argument makes no sense.

Actually it makes a whole lot of sense. Do away with the grade system and just go pass/fail. If you truly want kids to learn. I just study to memorize. I work the system, which isnt learning.

Thought I would bump this back up with the recent Student Section name discussion and the Marquette Pride posts that have showed up in the last couple of weeks...

I agree that no coach is bigger than the program... I like the Wojo hire... so let's get something in the student section chant at the beginning of the game to remind college basketball that WE ARE MARQUETTE and we aren't going anywhere!

The only pre-game chant back in the day was "The 'Lanche or Hegarty's?" as people walked down Wells to the Arena. And the "Give 'em hell, AL!" guy.

Frankly, that still ranks as the greatest pre-game chant ever. A darkened Arena. 11,000 people standing in silence. The last notes of the Star Spangled Banner giving way to four words that captured the Zeitgeist of Marquette. The essence of an outlook, a temperament, a demeanor, a spirit, and an ethos. There will never be anyone to rival Al  and nothing to compare with that invocation. Nothing.

true that, Goose..., the arena was the perfect setting for bball with the 'center stage' lighting and the dark seating area.  Hell, you can read a book during a game in the BC.  Not a bad seat in the arena.  Smallish, but would have been a good investment for MU to buy- save a ton of $$ on rent, play in Marquette Arena, blue and gold neon running around the building, loud as hell during a game, more comfortable seating, rent it out when off-season.  I think it would have paid for itself and been a true asset to the school.  I can hear the drums now...

I currently work at a school with very lame yells (we don't cheer because that's for cheerleaders). Here is one of ours:

Farmers fight!
Farmers fight!
Fight! Fight!
Farmers farmers fight!
Eh Whoop!

Pretty lame looking at it on paper. What makes it awesome is that literally everyone in Kyle Field, alumni and all, are screaming it at the top of their lungs. The words don't matter, it's the fact that is done in unison. If people got over the "this wasn't what Marquette did when I was a student" mentality, we could create a really awesome tradition.

Here are the rest of our yells, just to show you how lame they look on paper. But go to an Aggie football game, they will blow you away.

http://yell.tamu.edu/yells

To see what it sounds like when everyone participates: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DBjchjo5A8

And that video is from the "Midnight yell practice" the night before the game. It's even louder during the actual game. And if you look closely, you can actually spot TAMU Eagle in the crowd!

Fair enough... it's one thing to play a popular song to pump up the crowd (which isn't really under the control of the students), it's another to blatantly rip off a unique cheer and make it your own...  I understand the WE ARE thing isn't unique, and actually I thought it was a bit ridiculous the first couple of games that I went to as a freshman, but obviously that cheer isn't going anywhere...

on a related note, Wisconsin claiming that Jump Around is "theirs" is the dumbest thing I have ever heard (or any school claiming that a popular song is "theirs")... no matter where you play "jump around," people are going to "jump around," whether that is in Kamp Randall, the Bradley Center, or I don't know... ANY OTHER STADIUM/ARENA IN THE WORLD!

Nahhh, im just sick of defending it from sweater vest wearers like people on this site. Still haven't heard any better ideas.

No need to defend it, it is a great idea to get a cheer going at the start of the game... you repeatedly have asked for some suggestions, that was the purpose of this thread, and the purpose of bumping it... if you or your group of students don't change it, it doesn't matter to me... I just was trying to provide some suggestions that you frequently would request when trying to defend the cheer to the alums...

Obviously, like you said, it is pointless to have such discussions on this board because it inevitably turns into student/alum bashing... So, screw it, either way, GO MARQUETTE!  Let's just keep it coming with the new/old stuff

You said it yourself. There isn't a cheer that is unique.

I don't know where in there I said that there isn't a cheer that is unique... I said playing a popular song isn't unique, but that's pretty obvious from the use of "popular song"... I also so the We Are isn't unique... so that must mean that "no cheer is unique"... I should get you a "jump to conclusions" mat
