Title: 2014 Old Spice Classic in Orlando
Post by: swoopem on August 12, 2013, 02:49:57 PM
My friend who went to Kansas just told me that KU and MU will both be in the 2014 Old Spice Classic but I haven't heard anything about this, anyone know if its true? Also who else is going to be there, thanks

He is correct.

"In 2014, Orlando’s Old Spice Classic will have marquee teams Kansas, Michigan State and Marquette, which may make that event the top in ’14."

I've lamented being the big dog in the conf (fine Georgetown trolls, the 2nd biggest name) but it has its benefits with deals like this.  We're not fighting with UConn, Cuse, Louisville, Pitt, ND for placement.  As long as rules state only 1 rep per conference, we're bound to be on the "A-List" rotation.  We always did well beforehand but I would imagine we'll continue to be included and always a 1st or 2nd option.

Ironically, I think Xavier is also in this tournament.  As with Creighton this fall, this stuff was put together prior to the NBE membership was finalized.

Kansas and Michigan State are probably the 2 teams I want to play most due to having friends go to both schools so I'm pumped. I'll definitely be going to this tournament.

I seem to recall MU announcing Orlando in '14 about the same time or perhaps before they announced Anaheim in '13.  I could be wrong about that, though.

Having painful memories of our choking against Florida state the last time we were in the old spice classic.

Was a horrible, ugly choke job.  The first two games were super exciting though.  We walked out of Disney feeling pretty good about a team that wasn't even supposed to make the NIT.  A really nice preseason tournament, will be nice to return.

The memorable Jimmy Butler rendition of Party in the USA at 1:00.  Tidbits of all four MU players to play in the NBA from that team...who'd have thunk it?

True but I remember sitting in my Brodonnel dorm thinking we were such hot stuff at half time and then my jaw dropping the entire second half. First of many choke jobs and unreal last minute shots that year.  I wouldn't have predicted jimmy that year to be honest but I was still new to CBB opposed to the NBA.

Izzo is going to need to do some serious reloading after this season. Harris will be gone, Payne will be gone, Dawson will be gone. His latest class was very weak. He's hunting big game in 2014 (Okafor, Jones, Towns Jr. etc) but I wouldn't be surprised to see him strike out. I think Michigan State has a down year.

Conversely, Kansas will be stacked next season. I think they have a good chance of retaining most of their players (-Wiggins) and will be a preseason favorite to win it all.

Can't wait for this tourney. I will start saving up now.

Appling could be gone as well.

But they'll be good. Down a bit? Sure. But they'll be good. Valentine, Trice, Schilling, Ellis... could use a nice 2014 class. We shall see. McD's AA's haven't been so rare for Michigan State the last few years.

(PS - Towns = Kentucky commit long ago, I do believe..)

Dammit.  I was tipped off to the GP about a month ago, and I was hoping they'd consider an alternative for the team hotel.  $300/night for a basic room is fine if you're going to Maui or Diamondhead, but there are decent resort properties that can be had for under $200/nt in Orlando that time of year.  Heck... the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress is only $150/nt., and - while I have not stayed there myself - I have been told it's every bit as good as the GP, just without a pirate ship.

Last time I was at the Old Spice Class, my hotel was $22 a night and very close to the arena.

Could have been had for less than double the $22, but I declined. With the off day during the tourney I went to my condo in Palm Beach for two nights. This year if I go I'll probably stay in Orlando for the duration... and get a better hotel.

Basic King or 2 Queen rooms at Gaylord Palms has dropped to $183/nt (with AAA membership)... if you're into the Disney thing, the official travel package isn't a bad deal right now.  For two adults, the cost of buying hotel, game tickets and theme park tickets ala carte is about the same as the package deal.  However, if you don't want to do the Disney thing, you can save yourself $500 off the package price.

Personally, I need a car regardless... with two kids in booster seats and one in an infant carrier, I much prefer the flexibility of a rental car to bus transportation.  Besides, rental cars in Orlando are pretty reasonable, so I don't see a heck of a lot of value in the package's inclusive ground transportation; that said, for people who use taxis and shuttles for everything when on vacation (which, I'll admit, is what I saw a lot of in Maui), it definitely makes the package an even better deal (not to mention you don't have to fork out an extra $20/day for parking).  At the very least, those booking the package are going to need airport transportation to the hotel, which is about 20 miles away from MCO; however, once you're at the hotel, there are shuttles to take you to the Disney theme parks, so unless you're going off (Disney) property, a rental car isn't necessary.

That said, I'm strongly considering a package deal right now... not sure how the pricing would work for 2A2C but if we paid the quad rate for the two adults and the child rate for the two kids (assuming no charge for the infant), we'd be at $2340 all in.  Ala carte, we're already at $1600 for hotel and tickets, and if we bought 2-day Disney passes, that's another $1000; however, the kids aren't to the age where the theme parks are going to do anything, so that's a throwaway IMO.  Rental car is already booked for $450, so it looks like a wash either way.  I don't know if the Disney passes have any resale value, but if I could scalp those passes, that might tip the scales in favor of the package.

My daughter was just at Disney. She stayed at a Disney hotel and everything incuding the park admission was on a wrist band, so you may not be able to resell the park passes.

The arena holds 5,000 and box scores from previous seasons indicate that they rarely get more than 3,000-4,000, even for the Championship games.  Our Championship game with FSU a few years back was listed at about 2,200.  The wild card is this field being particularly strong, with both KU and MSU.  I'd bet it won't be too bad.

I've worked media there before and they had some shared seats on press row (i.e., the team you're covering is playing, it's your seat, when team x is playing it's another guy's seat.. neither team is playing you can fight for it).. when I was just watching games, there were some that I went into the regular stands and spread out like no other. Had two rows to myself. Computer, food, bags, etc.. just a ton of space.

Thanksgiving makes it a hard sell, but some of the teams in this year's tourney have some strong and odd fanbases who might make this year an outlier.

The question of the day is... who do you want in the quarterfinals? We may find out in a few days who it is. GT?

Just my two cents, but with KU and MSU playing, I'd bet the 4-5k tickets sell pretty well.  It won't be like years past.  MU's following is also not bad.

I am leaning heavily (only way I can lean) to being there. There's some inexpensive hotel options VERY near the Gaylord. That's what I'm about - inexpensive hotels. Wifi, free breakfast and I'm good.

Watching MU beat GT, MSU and then RI in the championship game will be a delight.

What are we doing on Saturday? Sleeping, probably. But I do want to go to Universal or on a Disney ride with MBD.

What's considered inexpensive for Dinney Wurld hotels? I had it in my head that a decent hotel is going to run you close to $200/night at DW, but this must be a way off-peak week for them because even the GP is only about $150/night if you stay 5+ nights.

I stayed at the Wyndham across from the old Pleasure Island complex many years ago when it was a Hyatt Regency (and Pleasure Island was still open); the going rate there is on par with the Gaylord, but I consider the GP a step or two higher in quality.  There are plenty of 3-stars under $100/night, but very few 4-stars under $150/night.  The only 5-star I see (Waldorf) is $229/night.  This all seems pretty damn cheap for DW.

Sure, you can get into the Motel 6 or Super 8 right down the street from the WWOS arena under $50/night, but would you even want to?

Benny,
They get you when you visit the park.  It's probably pretty close to $100 per person.  Kids are just a hair less.  AAA discounts only kick in after 3 or more days at the park.

So it's the old Barbie model, eh? Give 'em the doll dirt cheap and jack the costs on clothes and accessories.  Even the discounted DW tickets are over $90/person; thanks, but no.  I'll be perfectly happy with the naked, anatomically-lacking doll.

Fortunately, my kids would much prefer swimming at the hotel to waiting an hour in line for something similar to what they rode at MOA.

$38 / night at Super 8. If you're a bachelor who isn't going to use the room much except to sleep & shower... it's an option.

I was in Orlando in the summer of 2012 & 2013.  I accepted the Hilton Honors shameless attempt to sell me a timeshare at the Hilton Parc Soliel.  A beautiful resort with a kid's area and game room, waterslide and walk-in pool and the perfect weather to go with it all.  It worked out to be $91/night for a 2 bedroom & 2 bathroom condo.  We wanted to buy, but didn't, so Hilton gave us 18 months to reconsider so we went back the following year for 5-nights.   Hit Magic Kingdom & Universal in 2012 and Animal Kingdom/Epcot (on a Parkhopper) & Sea Word in 2013.  Spent 3 nights on Daytona Beach beforehand in 2012 and 3 nights in St. Petersburg Beach afterwards in 2013.  Each year the parks cost me way more than my six nights of hotel stays including beachfront.

And like your kids, mine preferred hanging at the pool the best.  They also liked Sea World better than Disney.  I think they liked the Clearwater Marine Aquarium better than Disney for that matter.

I had these prices in spreadsheet for 2013 to give you an idea of park entry prices.
SEA WORLD              Adult           Up to 9 yrs old
1-DAY                      $78.99    $70.99

DISNEY
1-DAY                      $94.79    $88.40
1-DAY Park Hopper      $132.06    $125.67
2-DAY                      $187.44    $174.66
2-DAY Park Hopper      $248.15    $235.37
2-DAY No Expiration      $219.39    $206.61
2-DAY No Exp/Park Hop   $280.10    $267.32

UNIVERSAL
1-DAY                      $88.00    $82.00
1-DAY Park Hopper      $123.00    $117.00
2-DAY                      $119.99    $109.99

If you're looking for roller coasters, Universal/Islands of Adventure is definitely the way to go.

Went to DW this summer with my wife (no kids) since I've lived here 4+ years now and figure I should check it out.  Stooooopid expensive and I give credit to anyone hauling kids around that place.  And not a beer to be had ANYWHERE (at Magic Kingdom anyways).

There is absolutely beer in Magic Kingdom.  Only way to get through a 90+ degrees day while guiding three kiddos under 7 through that overpriced hellhole.

The Magic Kingdom has been selling beer for two years.  Sadly, it was dry the last time I took the kids there.

We booked at the Hyatt Cypress - $135/nt, but the wife is now looking into vacation homes or renting a timeshare (one that's already sold, not one we have to sit through a presentation).  Though anything "Suites" sounds awfully compelling with three kids... are those actually two-room suites or just a big room with a half-wall/divider in the middle?

Benny B - it depends.
Go to the website, they usually have photos of the room (type) and will state if it "two-room" or a studio or one big room that just has a kitchenette & pull-out couch.

I priced the Gaylord for 7 nights all-in (taxes, resort fees, parking, etc.) for a basic 2Q room at just under $1,500 a couple weeks ago.  Hyatt Cypress was about $100 less.

My wife's research indicates that there are some decent 3-4BR vacation rentals that can be had for well under $1,000 all-in.  Granted, there's no pirate ship at any of the rentals, but some of them are timeshare/resort properties so they have a lot of the amenities that the hotels do.

For $500 over 7 days, I'd typically opt for the convenience of a hotel over a vacation home if it was just my wife and I; however with kids, the peace of not only being able to sleep in our own room, but having each of the kids in their own room seems like you can't even put a price on that.

Did anyone go to the Old Spice Classic in 2009?

Apparently the tickets are all General Admission... any thoughts on the seating at the Milk House?

I assume that like other tournaments, the best seats are to be found by waiting for fans from the previous game vacate their seats.  But since it's GA, I'm wondering if people are constantly jockeying for better seats as other people leave or if the turnover mostly occurs between games.

Any seats/sections that are better than others?

I was there. There was very little competition for seats. We walked in maybe 30 minutes before the game started and sat in the third row. It's a small gym so there aren't any really bad seats.

I talked to someone at the ticket office and they said everything goes through the website... they received no allotment (other than staff/family, I assume).  Unfortunately, the only tickets available are all-session passes... not stoked about paying for basketball I'm not going to watch, but maybe we can offload our early session tickets on the 27th and 28th to some KU or TN fans.

Yeah, we've been debating about how many to get for my wife and I, brother, and parents.  Didn't want to get 5 all-session passes, so decided on 3 all-sessions and either rotate or scalp for the other ones.

Be nice to sell off extras, though, if we can--are they sold individual tickets for each game, afternoon/evening session, or per day?

my tickets are at home, so i am not 100% certain, but i believe i got a separate ticket for each session.

also, regarding seating, each teams' fans gathered behind that bench for the general seating, with turnover occurring between games -- others scattered throughout the rest of the gym.  it was all pretty easy.  got great seats for each game with a 3yo and 1.5yo in tow.  this year they are 8 6 and 4 (not born in '09).  we will all be there.

Wasn't there in 2009, but was there in 2011. Plenty of open seats. Only wild card is not knowing how well KU might travel (or any of the other teams?). Not expecting there to be an issue for folks to find great seats. And, they 'direct' fans of each team playing in a particular game to their own 'part of the gym'..

Don't know if Doc still has a house there, but if so would be nice to see him make it to a game.. he stopped by in 2011... Austin was still at Winter Park HS then IIRC.

Looking forward to it. (Ladies, PM me.)

My tickets have a row and a seat number. I have the same seats for all of the games. However, the tickets also say general admission. The tickets show GA1 Row 107, seats 31 & 32. Maybe general admission applies to the seats available to the public.

I assume that's because in the ticketing system, every ticket has to be listed with a section, row and seat#, even if it is GA.  I once had a GA ticket for a play at a small theater that was Row A, Seat 200, despite the fact there were only 15-20 seats in the rows, but the theater only seated 200 people, so I just figured I bought the last ticket available.

I don't have the physical tickets for Orlando in hand yet, but when I log in to my Ticketmaster account (through the ESPN Events page, not ticketmaster.com), it says my tix are in Row 101, Seats 15-18.

So at the very least, I'm 6 rows in front of you... must be all those priority points I've racked up.

If we upset Georgia Tech, we won't get as fortunate against the rest of the winners bracket.

If we lose to Georgia Tech, we probably beat Rider, but Rhode Island will destroy is in the final game, unless they pull off the upset of Kansas, in which case the Jayhawks get that honor.

Spent the day at Orlando Science Center with the kids... money well spent and didn't have to step a single foot outdoors.

Incidentally, my wife said something about a tornado warning just before we left the house this morning; her side of the family tends to pay attention to bad weather in places they know no one or have never been so I completely shrugged it off thinking she may have been looking at the weather forecast in Tulsa or somewhere in the belt.

What did you get there? Looks like a nasty northern Wisconsin supper club. I'm going to eat everything in sight in the media room and hope to only buy some fast food on Saturday. Even though money's no expense.

How am I going to be able to spot Scoopers in Orlando? I think it'll be easy. Look for the gimps.

I look somewhere in between a hot stud and Mike Hunt, quickly trending toward Mike Hunt.

I ask fellow scoopers to save me here in Orlando.  I will be hanging with three friends who are all Spartan alum.  They will be with me on Thursday but it could get ugly on Friday if we win the first one.

They are known for their Grouper. Nice wine list. Yeah, supper club feel but Orlando is all chains so it is nice to go to some place original. Disney always puts on a nice spread for the media.

As for spotting us gimps, see the picture below and look for me...I am all about the Gold. If I see a guy on Press Row who looks like he hasn't run a comb through his hair in five years, I will stop by and say hi.

Enjoy and Go Warriors!

I'm sure I stick out like a sore thumb in Orlando... I'm the guy with three kids running amuck.

BTW -- Another sh/tty weather day here... prolly not going to break 60.  Legoland postponed, so I'm going to take this opportunity to show my kids the seven different places where daddy has thrown up in WDW; conveniently, they're all in one place that currently goes by the moniker "Downtown Disney."

If you are looking for a change of pace food wise, and something that isn't a national chain I recommend: http://www.roccostacos.com/about.php
They have 4-5 locations in Florida and one in Brooklyn, NY.  Right off I4 near Universal.

Good guacamole, tequila list, scenery, etc.

What's the deal on Tollroads again? I mostly carry $100's - can they give me exact change?

Any heavy construction or other issues to look out for from the airport to "the area"??

Take the toll roads, all that will happen is you will get a bill in the mail 3 weeks later and you can pay online for a small fee. (I have never been fined.)

Not sure what "the area" is, but the major I4 construction is east of Orlando, and shouldn't impact you.  TR 417 also has a few projects, but traffic is so light on the tolls that typically it didn't matter.  I4 downtown to Disney can be a mess at anytime, for no real reason.

Or you can take the main road north out of MCO a mile to the Walgreens on the right, buy a portable transponder for $20. They'll make change for your hondos.

No other issues getting SW.

The ride is really awesome, don't let me dissuade you (the whole Harry Potter Wizard area and ride are awesome too...they is a train between the two parks as Hogwarts is in Islands of Adventure).  When I went on the Hogwarts ride I had an empty stomach and just got off a few others like Hollywood Rockit...so, grab a soft pretzel and Sprite beforehand. And, order a warm butter beer (just don't pull out your ID like I did).

Let's go Warriors!  Feeling a win today.

I'm here. Nasty flight.. smelled like a diaper (probably me) and lots of kids crying.

Tonight I think MU can turns these guys over if they play it right. Heath has 18 assists to 1 turnover.. 42.4 assist rate, less than 6% on turnovers.. tonight that gets back toward reality. Tadric Jackson is good, but too young... propensity to screw things up at this stage.

Lose rebounds, win turnovers, shoot a little better, win.. hate to ever mention free throws, but GT has some of the worst FT shooters imaginable (well south of 60% career avg's for some of them).

Just finished turkey dinner with the family and the tryptophan seems to be settling in; I must say it's the first time I've roasted a turkey on the road, and it was actually much easier than usual (probably because of the limited menu)... now to figure out what to do with the leftovers.

Kids refused to take a nap earlier because we had a guest over, for dinner, and the curiosity was too much for them, apparently, so this is going to get interesting with tipoff likely to be around 9:00 pm local.   If any of you happen to see someone chasing two small kids in the background during the first half and carrying said kids - completely crashed and limp - out during the second half, that would most likely be me.

Thankfully there are about twenty Starbucks between here and the arena.

Just had a turkey dinner at the arena. Got up crazy early for the flight this AM... MSU up 16-6; Rider not doing much to keep me UP.

Hope MU can handle Cox and the gang.

If you have a rental car from a major chain (I use National for work) use the SunPass lanes.  Rental car companies will charge you a nominal daily fee ($3.95 for National) and the tolls will be added to your bill.

According to Bleacher Report (http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2280327-orlando-classic-2014-teams-schedule-live-stream-bracket-tv-info) if we lose to MSU we play at 1:00, if we beat them we play at 4:00. Take it with a grain of salt as it is BR, but so far I haven't seen times up on ESPN so that may be the best you can get for now.

Thanks; lending a hand at PaintTouches.com this weekend. Now here for KU/Tenn (and lunch!!). Might go back to the telly and take a monster nap before MU plays. Gonna be another late one.

Matt V and I are sitting on the very end of press row (sideline) again tonight. Was difficult to not stand up and start pacing late in last night's game. Cripes.

Saturday night is there any MU stuff going on? I've gotta run over to a HS tourney in the afternoon (Haanif and a Gopher commit).. then have a buddy coming up from the Palm Beach area... might swing over to the GAYLORD or elsewhere if there's some MU folks hanging out later Sat.

Somehow, Old Town made it on my list of "rainy day alternatives," but one look at the website and it was a no-go for me.  Having worked my way through HS and college in the Dells, I'm already experiencing PTSD being down here;

Seriously though, Legoland was pretty damn good for the kids.  Everything geared towards the younger tots, so it's by far more bang-for-the-buck than Disney if you're only spending a day or two in the theme parks with kids under 8.

Anyone taking a flight out tonight?  I'm curious as to what the security lines might be like tomorrow afternoon, and I'm hoping that the majority of travellers are going to be getting out today (i.e. making for a lighter crowd tomorrow); so if someone has some airport intel, it would be appreciated.
