Title: Comments...Marquette's All-Time Walk-On Team
Post by: 77ncaachamps on June 24, 2007, 12:42:01 PM
I was working on the pages of John Willkom  (http://wiki.muscoop.com/doku.php/men_s_basketball/john_willkom), Shane Grube (http://wiki.muscoop.com/doku.php/men_s_basketball/shane_grube) and tinkered with Rob Hanley's (http://wiki.muscoop.com/doku.php/men_s_basketball/rob_hanley) last night when I got this headscratcher: Who would fill out Marquette's All-Time Walk-On Team?

During my years at MU, it was Carl Hren, Joel Pogodzinski, Mark Harris, and Wade Harbin. I don't think ANY of those guys would make the cut. So...if you had to fill a team of 5 guys with/without 1 reserve, which walk-ons would you pick? Or you could just rattle off your top 5 walk-ons?

He was a scholarship player...unsure about the Astros picking up his tab.

No, he walked on.  He was drafted in the MLB draft, I believe the Astros is correct, and they payed his way through school.

John Mueller was initially a walk-on before being given a scholarship later in his career

Harold Poss (50's ??) and Bob Hoganhocki (70's or 80's).  Was Smolinski a walk on or did we waste a scholly

Smo was indeed a scholarship player.

I think Bruce Hayes was a walk on--because of the talent level back then he wound up winning a starting slot.

So if Crawford was a walk-on, he gets the nod as a first-team All-Walkon...with an * of course.

was Dave Delsman who saved our ass in many games. Very adept in handling the ball, made his FTs and could also hit the J. Al gave him a scholie after freshman year. The dude was an allycat fighter too.

Delsman was one of the guys off Al's development squad that made the regular rotation!

Wasn't Marcus West a walk on?  I'm sure that he had a soccer scholarship.

The Astros didn't pick up his entire 4 years if I recall correctly, only a year or two.

Crawford was drafted by the Astros in 1994 and the MLB draft is usually close to the end of the school year. That means, if it is true that the Astros picked up Crawford's tab, it was for the years 1994-95, 95-96, and 96-97.

MoSarSaur - I think West was a walk-on but had, as you mentioned, the athletic (soccer) scholarship so he couldn't "double up" and take a basketball one too. West was very serviceable at the point.

Crawford was recurited by O'Neal. When he was drafted, Crawford asked o'Neill if he could play baseball also. It was O'Neill who asked him to negotiate paying the tuition so he could hand out another scholarship. They tried to do the same thing with Richard Shaw, but I do not think he got drafted. Crawford would have had a scholarship, if baseball did not pick it up, so I do not think he was a true walkon.

Dave Delsman gets my vote, because he had the guts to knock Al McGuire down in practice with his fist. Mcguire did not suspend him or kick him off the team, because he reminded McGuire of himself.

Shaw was drafted twice, in 1993 by the Dodgers and 1996 by the Angels, but never came to an agreement with either team that picked him, so he used a scholarship.

Technically Crawford was a walk on. The Houston Astros paid for him to go to Marquette.

(begging) .. If you have info on Shaw or Crawford, please share it on the wiki.  It'd be great if that info would have a permanent place.  Just bring up the pages and click "edit" and plop your info down.  Very simple.  (/begging)

Well, I must say its nice to be remembered, but not as nice to be dissed.... lol

First off I would like to point out as I was a teammates of Crawford's I can tell you he was NOT a walk-on...  He was a scholarship player until the 1995-1996 when the Astros did pick up the cost of him being in school.. As at that time an athlete who was under contract no matter what sport he was participating was not allowed to receive an athletics scholarship.  He was actually a teammate of Carl Wren, Mark Harris and me.

Secondly though I am truly (scoff) saddened by your lack of support for my being on the all-time Walk-on team, I have been able to continue my career in basketball as a coach at the Miller School in Virginia.  Where I have been fortunate to coach some amazing kids who have gone on to great team and individual success.  Though we have not been fortunate enough to send kids to Marquette (YET), we have graduated many college players in my 7 years there.  Also we have made the state play offs all 7 years, state Final Four 6 times, State Championship 3 times and had 3 State Players-of-the-Year.  SO my hope is that my legacy is not what I did while I was on the court at MU, but what I hope to send MU's way... someday.  And maybe through them live some of the Golden Eagle glory I never acheived at Marquette.

Wade Harbin

Thanks for keeping all the walk-ons in your collective memory, I know the appreciate that someone out there remembers they once wore blue and gold

As the only walk-on (we know of) to grace us at MUScoop.com, I here by nominate you, Wade Harbin, to the All-Time Walk-On Team.

Thanks for sharing!

Feel free to help us out on your wiki page:

.. Oh, and "until the 2005-06" season?  Um, no.  Maybe 95-96 is what you meant?

Thanks for updating us, Wade! Yes, I was the original poster who said you wouldn't be on the team...but you probably will be on it yet!

Also, I was the one who created your page!!! BTW, your missed three at the end of one of Marquette's games still resonates in my memory as did my calling out for you to enter the game (with other MU fans, of course!) You guys (the walk-ons) were always the fan favorites! I'm sure I'm not the only one here who would have rather seen you log more minutes than Abel Joseph!!!

BTW, do you have any recent pics of you coaching your teams? We'd love to see them!

Thanks for speaking up Wade/VaGldnEgle - welcome.  Plus, I notice you're member number 777 on MUScoop - if there are any casinos in VA you may want to feed a couple dollars into a one-armed bandit tomorrow  ;)

I've got a picture of Harbin busting his cargo shorts zipper open at the hole in one shootout at Summerfest from two years ago, will that do?

See ya next weekend Wader.

Your absolutly right I meant 95-96 not 05-06...

Thanks for the nomination, though I certainly do NOT deserve it... Though I loved playing at MU and that 3 still pisses me off, since it was the only 1 I missed, I am not in the league of some of the other players that came before and followed me... though, every time I put a 3 down in scrimmages or open gym my players get to be reminded that I played at MU :D  and they eat it up, they all follow the team, Dwade, Steve and Travis and if something good happens they are there to give em praise if something bad happens they are there to razz me about it, but they always know.

Our team website is www.millerdevils.org (http://www.millerdevils.org), though it will be changing soon as our school just changed its colors and mascot...  A DISASTER any survivors of the ughhh I hate to mention it "GOLD" can relate to.

Thanks so much for adding me to the the page.  Though I wish we had won all the state championship games, sadly we have yet to win any of the them.  We are 0-3, but there is always next year.
