Title: Recruiting Tidbits
Post by: Blackhat on May 23, 2012, 10:08:14 PM
****Whether or not 2013 four-star point guard Stevie Clark makes a move into the class of 2012 is still undecided. The 5-foot-10 scoring machine from Oklahoma City (Okla.) Douglass is waiting to see who is hired to replace his former high school coach Terry Long at Douglass. If it's somebody he's comfortable with, Clark will be back for his senior year, and his mother has told Rivals.com and other news outlets that it's her preference that he stay in the class of 2013. Should he make a move to 2012, Baylor, Florida State, Missouri, Oklahoma, Marquette, Oklahoma State, Stanford, Tulsa and many others are in play.

****This spring, one of the more pleasant surprises has been the development of four-star power forward Jarell Martin.

In addition to his strong play with New Orleans Elite on the grassroots circuit, Martin has earned rave reviews for his play at Adidas Nations events. And the Baton Rouge (La.) Madison Prep junior was recently measured at 6-foot-9 and 223 pounds over the weekend at the most recent Nations event.

Because of that loaded calenedar, Martin is unlikely to take any visits to schools during June. When we last spoke to Martin in April, he indicated that Oklahoma State and Louisville were really standing out in his recruitment; but his high school coach says there are a pair of SEC schools right there in hometown LSU and Alabama.

Others involved include St. John's, Marquette, Baylor, Ohio State and Kansas, but Martin is in no rush to make a decision. Look for him to cut his list down to five after July and then take his time making visits in order to set up a late signing.

****As the top big men in the class of 2014, Jahlil Okafor and Dakari Johnson have set the bar high for sophomores around the nation. Little known due to his location, Isaac Allen of Mesa High in Arizona is quite the commodity and is making his game known around the nation.

Standing 6-foot-10, the talented power forward has a long, athletic body which he is still growing into. When all is said and done, he could be one of the best prospects to come out of the state of Arizona, especially from a standpoint of size. He runs the floor extremely well, rebounds well and can score inside. He is getting stronger and taking strides in his game on offense.

A strong academic commodity, Allen enjoys school and is very focused and mature for his age.

With his work ethic, length and potential, he is a college coach's dream, especially because of how under the radar he is playing for the ICan All-Stars.

With no current offers or visits under his belt, the entire Pac-12 is recruiting him early and often.

At the moment - UCLA, Marquette, Arizona and Notre Dame are recruiting him the hardest. The Wildcats and Arizona State have an advantage in his recruitment being the in-state squads. Texas and UNLV - along with all of the equally interested Pac-12 schools - are salivating and wondering just how good Allen could turn out.

He is not focused on his recruitment at the moment, and is very reserved when it comes to that matter. When all is said and done, look for Isaac Allen to be the best talent to come out of Mesa (AZ) since Arizona State rising sophomore Jahii Carson .

Yeah, but do they have academic All-American potential? If not, I say pass.

Why even worry about this when we have no control over it?

Will Stone Cold name his sources?

Since they haven't committed to Marquette already, it's pretty doubtful that they're even considering coming to Marquette.  No one thinks about stuff without doing it.

Doesn't it seem that Allen has skinny (not-so-wide) shoulders? Not really ideal for a PF/C right?

I like the fact he can run the court well and stay with our transition game.  Looks like he's got the hops to be a shot blocker too.  Might be tailor made for us.

I have skinny (not-so-wide) shoulders, too, and....and....  Hmmm, come to think of it, I wasn't an ideal PF/C either.  Wasn't an ideal PG/SG/SF either. Really wasn't much of anything on the court, actually.  Did get my front teeth knocked out playing IM b-ball in the old gym one night.  Thank goodness for the dental school and Dr. VanScoten on the faculty.  He put 'em all back in the same night, wired 'em up, and told me to lay off eating corn on the cob for awhile.  Ahhh, the good old days.

A center can come in and start right away in 2014, I am sure Buzz will find some top kid who likes that idea!  The more MU plays well the next two years, the high visibility of the program will attract somebody.

Marquette should sign all the good players and leave all the bad players for other schools.

One of the hotter recruits in the country has been Baton Rouge (La.) Madison Prep's Jarell Martin. Martin was the Pangos camp's top performer of the weekend after leading the camp in scoring and finishing second in rebounding.

After watching him earlier this spring, it was clear that Martin was going to jump from his current ranking of No. 62 in the 2013 Rivals150. Now, he looks like a guy that could very well be in the discussion for five-star status when the rankings are next reviewed.

Martin's added strength allows him to play more powerfully in the lane and he's also much more committed to making things happen at the rim first. Once he establishes himself on the low block, Martin can then face up and attack via the dribble or drain 12- to 15-foot jumpers. In transition, he's a sleek performer who gets from rim to rim as quickly as any big man in the country.

Since arriving in Baton Rouge the new staff at LSU has turned things up and Alabama, Louisville and Oklahoma State were already strong. Others taking their chances include Kansas, Baylor, St. John's, Marquette and Ohio State.

One of the nation's elite shooters and top overall young players, Theo Pinson has become more impressed with Indiana with each conversation with coach Tom Crean.

The Rivals.com No. 14 player in the 2014 class decided he wanted a first-hand look at IU, so he's making an unofficial visit to the Bloomington campus on Friday.

"I've talked to coach Crean, and I really like things like how he cares about the person first more than just basketball," said Pinson, who talked to Indiana Monday evening. "He thinks about family first, and I really like that. I just like how he cares about people off the court."

The 6-foot-5 forward from Greensboro, N.C., has an offer from Indiana, among a host of schools.

He said he's intrigued by Indiana's resurgence that has them set up to be a national title contender this year and Crean's history of developing players.

Rivals.com 2014 No. 14 Theo Pinson is making an unofficial visit to Indiana on Friday.

"They're No. 1 in the preseason right now. They had a really good season last year. I don't think anybody thought they'd beat Kentucky last year, but they did," Pinson said. "And you can look at all the players that coach Crean has coach like Dwayne Wade."

Pinson has a host of skills, but the one that stands out the most is that he's one of the nation's best shooters in high school basketball right now, regardless of class.

Playing with the CP3 All-Stars, Pinson has been outstanding this spring.

He said the things he's looking for in a college are "winning tradition and the atmosphere and the environment."

"I just really want to get down there and see how the campus looks, see the facilities, get out of North Carolina and take a visit," Pinson said.

"They offered me like a week ago, so they're really interested. I talked to them (Monday night). They said they're really excited for me to come down there, and I'm really looking forward to it."

Pinson has offers from IU, Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky, Ohio State, Clemson, UConn, Georgetown and a host of others.

Asked who he's hearing from the most, Pinson listed Alabama, Indiana, Ohio State, N.C. State, Marquette, Georgetown, Syracuse, North Carolina, Duke, Wake Forest, Florida State and Maryland.

He's made several unofficial visits, including trips to Duke, North Carolina, N.C. State, Wake Forest and Alabama.

Pinson has been impressive for a while. This is his third year playing with the CP3 17-and-under team. Peegs.com watched him in person at the Boo Williams Elite Youth Basketball League event earlier this spring.

He was the leading scorer and rebounder and led the team in steals this spring for CP3 in the EYBL through the first three sessions, averaging 15.7 points per game. He's shooting 48 percent from the floor (59-for-123) and 33 percent from 3-point range (16-for-49). He is also second on the team in assists.

Pinson is friends with current 2014 IU recruits Trey Lyles and James Blackmon Jr.

Pinson has a mentality like Lyles and Blackmon. While he's an elite talent, his focus is on basketball and improving for the future, not the hype.

Top Ten for 2014 in Illinois according to Brad Sturdy from orangeandbluenews.com

The hype surrounding the 2014 class in Illinois has been overwhelming over the past few years, and although there is still a pair of elite prospects at the top of the rankings, there is a drop off into the 3 and 4 star range directly after those two.

There are still possibly a dozen high major players in the 2014 class. Here's a look at the Ornage Blue News post spring Illinois rankings for the class of 2014.

1. Jahlil Okafor    Chicago Whitney Young
The top big man in the state may also be the top big man in the country for 2014. Possessing an advanced back to the basket game, and continually getting better, he's a future lottery pick.

2. Cliff Alexander    Chicago Curie
The clear #2 player in the class, Alexander is a 5 star recruit that can run the floor and finish at the rim. He lacks the offensive arsenal of Okafor, but may run a little better.

3. Keita Bates-Diop    Normal U-High
He continues to grow as a player and get better, but he isn't always as productive as he should be with his skill set, size and athletic ability. With a sweet stroke, great length, and understated athleticism, he's a high major lock.

4. Paul White    Chicago Whitney Young
Although he sometimes disappears, he is still a player with great talent and excellent skills for his size. As he improves his motor and becomes more comfortable in his role, he can become an elite talent.

5. Larry Austin    Springfield Lanphier
Austin had a great spring and continues to win games and change minds. He does everything except shoot it well, but that will come with his work ethic and dedication. Expect him to continue to grow as a player and he always brings it on the floor.

6. Tyler Ulis    Chicago Marian Catholic
Although small, Ulis can play. He gets into the lane, has the ball on a string and can shoot it from the perimeter. Some will back off due to size concerns, but that would be a mistake.

7. Sean O'Mara    Benet Academy
He's a solid big man, with good skills and is emerging as a better athlete. He's a notch below the other two big guys because he doesn't run and move as well, but he is a very solid consolation prize for some high major.

8. Malek Harris    Orland Park Sandburg
Harris had a great spring until an ankle injury derailed him a bit in early May. He can score and rebounds well, but is a bit of a tweener as a forward. Still, he has enough game and athleticism to be a power forward at the high major level.

9.Marlon Jones    Chicago Orr
After one viewing Jones one weekend, I would have him higher, but after a second viewing

10. Tyquone Greer    Chicago Orr
Probably too low, but Greer still has work to do as a perimeter scorer. He is a slasher and great at finishing in transition. I'd like to see him develop his ball handling and jump shot.

Wonder how much we really pushed but:

Alex Kline therecruitscoop.com

2013 6-foot-4 shooting guard Matt Thomas of Onalaska in Wisconsin cut his college list to two schools. Virginia and Iowa State emerged as the potential candidates for the No. 131 junior in the Rivals150. With Wisconsin, Boston College, Marquette, Minnesota, Nebraska and more involved, Thomas decided it would be best to either play for Fred Hoiberg and the Cyclones or Tony Bennett and the Cavaliers. While no decision timetable has been set yet, he has visited both schools and will look to determine a final destination in the near future.

Eric Bossi at Rivals.com breakdown of Stone and Looney from Elite 100 camp:

Diamond Stone- The 6-foot-8 center from Milwaukee was arguably the top player and prospect in camp. Big guys don't always command the ball in all-star camp settings but the class of 2015 stud did. While not a bouncy guy around the rim, Stone is strong and extremely skilled. While watching him, it was tough to not be reminded of a young Kevin Love. Jump hooks with either hand, 17 foot jumpers in pick and pop action, alert passing and excellent footwork are all parts of Stone's game at an early juncture. Lock him in as a five-star prospect and one of the true elite players we've seen in 2015 to this point. Stone feels he already has offers from Marquette and Wisconsin, but also mentioned Indiana, UCLA, North Carolina, Georgetown, Clemson, USC, Michigan and Michigan State as having showed early interest.

Kevon Looney- The Milwaukee (Wisc.) Hamilton product continued what has been a great grassroots season for him. A combo forward with a knack for cleaning the rack and a slim, angular frame, Looney is reminiscent of Quincy Miller at the same age. While he isn't quite yet the scorer Miller was, he's still possesses plenty of offensive ability.

Buzz's legacy might be right in front of him in recruiting.  He was able to get 3 Milwaukee kids to commit in 2013, in 2014 Looney is a priority so is Stone in 2015.  The best assistant he can get is from those three kids recruiting them in the same city.  Wilson plays with Stone, that is a no brainer.  Looney I am sure knows all of them and played with them already or against them on the playground.  This reminds me of when MU was recruiting Bo Ellis. Maurice Lucas, God rest his sole, and Jimmy Chones recruited Bo to come to MU.  This is the same situation.
Buzz has gotten so-called average players by hard work to the NBA, those past players love Buzz.  It is all falling in place for Buzz.  I have never seen in many years the quality of great players in the state.  Decker is Larry Bird like, love his game as well.  I can only remember over the years, John Johnson, Fred Brown, Goose Brell, Clarence Sherrod and a little guard from
Shorewood, John Rinka, and one other Jeff Webb from West Milwaukee as better.  Still trying to figure out how MU did not recruit either Johnson or Brown?  Sherrod was overrecruited by
getting Dean Memminger, I think we all agree he was better.  Rinka, Al admitted made a big mistake, took John Reider over him.  Rinka and Memminger would have been really good.  Jeff
Sewell was really good, but not as good as Rinka.  But one story about Sewell.  Cazzie Russell was at the arena after an MU practice and Cazzie bet there was not player on MU that could
shoot as good as him.  Al bet a $100 bucks on Sewell could beat him, and Sewell did.  Great story.

Love to here if anyone knows why MU did not recruit Johnson or Brown, both were outstanding players in the NBA?

The months of April and May were pretty good to Mike Young.

The 6-foot-8 forward from Hudson Catholic in New Jersey is having a solid June as well. After a strong run at the Pangos All-American Camp, Young has been impressive through the first day and a half of the NBPA Top 100 Camp as well.

He handles the ball, goes to the rim and can play some power basketball when needed. He's played the role of a combo forward and that's how many college coaches see him down the road.

"Some see me as a four and some see me as kind of a three," Young told Rivals.com. "It depends a lot if they play four out and one in or if they play with three guards and two big guys."

Ranked No. 105 nationally in the class of 2013, Young has been happy with his play in Charlottesville.

"I feel like I've done pretty well," Young said. "I've been patient and I've scored when I've gotten my chances."

Later this summer, Young will look to make some cuts from his current list of Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Florida, Miami, St. John's, Georgia Tech, Xavier and Marquette.

After he cuts it down, he'll take visits in hope of signing in the fall. He'll be looking for a place where he can create mismatches.

"I will probably cut it down in late August or September," said Young. "I'd like to decide before my senior season and sign in the fall.

"I like a system where I can play to mismatches on the floor."

2013 Shooting Guard

There was never any doubt in JaJuan Johnson's mind that he could play at a high level. He also knew that with hard work his ability would be recognized.

After a monster spring with the Bluff City Legends, the 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Memphis (Tenn.) Southwind is one of the hottest prospects in the country.

"It's been big for me," Johnson told Rivals.com about his play on the grassroots circuit. "I can tell just with all of these calls that I've been getting here."

Johnson hasn't just been getting calls, he's been adding to his long list of offers.

His most recent offers have come from West Virginia and Florida State to go on top of offers from programs like Memphis, Tennessee, Auburn, Arkansas, Alabama, Florida, Texas, Cincinnati, Marquette and Ole Miss.

During the month of June, Johnson has been busy on the visit trail. He's been by Ole Miss and Memphis and has plans to see Alabama next week. He also stopped by Louisville and the visit left an impression.

"It was really nice," said Johnson. "Everything was new. They had a lot of nice stuff to show me and they have a cool staff."

A slim shooter/score who can really defend, Johnson currently ranks No. 109 in the Rivals150. However, that will change when the rankings are updated and he'll be making a sizable move up.

Johnson is slated to attend the Kevin Durant Skills Academy next week and will then hit LeBron James' Academy and events with the Bluff City Legends. He'll also chop his list down to around five schools.

"I'm going to do it right after Peach Jam," said Johnson. "I want a school that plays my style of play and that I have a good relationship with the coaches. Also a place that I could see myself staying after I get done playing."

Finally, Johnson couldn't be any happier with the position he is in. He's proved he can play and is proud to have gotten his attention because of his play and not because of a reputation.

"It feels good," said Johnson of his success. "I've been playing with J3 (Johnathan Williams and Nick King and they are All-Americans. I've known I was just as good and people would see it. It just made me hungry to show what I can do."

Harris taking visits

During last weekend's NBPA Top 100 Camp, four-star Kendal Harris got off to a bit of a slow start. By the end of the weekend, though, the 6-foot-4 point guard from Richardson (Texas) Berkner was very instrumental in helping lead his camp team to the title.

A candidate to make a move up from his current spot of No. 100 in the Rivals150, Harris will start taking visits in hopes of chopping his lengthy list down a bit. He hit LSU at the beginning of the month and will trip to Arkansas on the 28th, TCU on the 29th and he's looking into a Texas -- who has turned up the intensity on his recruitment -- visit on the 30th. During July, he's planning to stop by Marquette if time allows.

According to Harris, he would like to decide during the early signing period and his plan is to cut things down after July. Among the others who have been showing more attention lately are Alabama, Missouri, Kansas State, USC, Washington State, Texas Tech, Virginia, Gonzaga and Creighton.

Stone solid

It's not totally unheard of for a big man to take over and control the action in an All-Star camp setting. However, it is a little unusual for a big guy to dominate the way that rising sophomore Diamond Stone did at the Nike Elite 100 in St. Louis during June. Usually, big men who dictate the action at a camp are high-flying, beastly, low-post warriors who simply overmatch their opponents physically. While Stone was certainly stronger than many of his competitors, he managed to make the camp his via an impressive level of skill and savvy in the post. The Milwaukee native commanded that the offense be run through him because his teammates figured out it was their best chance of winning and he was able to turn shot-jacking guards into post-feeding team players.

Eric Bossi Rivals.com

Even before he heads to college as a member of the class of 2013, Torren Jones is getting a taste of the college experience.

The No. 131 player in the class of 2013 will leave his Phoenix-area home for his senior year to attend La Porte (Ind.) La Lumiere.

Torren Jones welcomes the opportunity to go to school away from home.

"I'm excited because of the opportunity it's going to bring for me," Jones told Rivals.com. "But I'm nervous at the same time to be leaving home and my family.

"I'm trying to get ready for college, so it will be the perfect experience to that."

A 6-foot-8 power forward who has become a favorite of coaches and analysts because of his willingness to do the dirty work around the basket and in the paint, Jones finished off his summer strong.

"I feel like I had a great summer and a great summer camp with my performance in Vegas," he said. "Vegas picked up my recruiting a lot and opened up some eyes to some people that were looking at me but kind of skeptical."

According to Jones, he now holds offers from Washington State, Washington, Oregon, Oregon State, Marquette, Missouri and DePaul.

While Texas hasn't yet offered, Jones counts the Longhorns as another showing major interest.

Happy to be known as a tough man, Jones said that there's also more to his game.

"With my big body I'm not afraid to get physical in the paint," he said. I know some big guys don't like that contact. I'm not afraid to go out there against a bigger guy and do what needs to be done.

"I run the floor, I think people overlook that kind of. Just my presence on defense is something I pride myself on and my ability to score. I think I'm a way better scorer than I was before."

Looking forward to a big senior year at La Lumiere, Jones said that he'll weigh academics and the rosters of the schools recruiting him, and he'd like to find a school in a college town. Also, he's in no rush and is likely to wait until the late signing period.

"I'm definitely going to wait until the spring. I'm going to wait until after the basketball season and kind of sit down and narrow it down and go from there."

Soma Edo is one of the most explosive athletes in the country. The high-flying Edo, who jumped so high he smacked his head on a backboard in a game this summer, has a reputation as perhaps the best dunker in high school basketball.

As a member of the 2013 class, the electric Edo stands 6-foot-6 and weighs 215 pounds. After spending the summer playing for the Dallas Mustangs AAU squad, Edo will return to Richardson (TX) Berkner High School for his senior campaign.

At the next level, Edo sees himself as a combo forward. With his freakish athleticism, Edo would be a great fit in a program that likes to get out in transition allowing Edo to run the floor and showcase his explosiveness.

"My greatest strengths on the court are my ability to get to the basket and my explosive leaping ability," Edo told Rivals.com. "I've been working on improving my ball handling and my mid-range jumper and also my three point shot," he said.

Entering his final year of high school, Edo has a list of seven schools that are in play for his services. Marquette, Fresno State, Murray State, Oklahoma State, Santa Clara, Virginia Tech, and Western Kentucky are his finalists.

A decision appears to be coming soon for the Texas native, as he says he will decide on a school in about a month.

When making that decision, Edo says he will be looking at several different factors. "If I can be stable there. If the coaches treat me right, I mean I want a good coaching staff. The style of play, and also I'm real big into academics so that's important too," said Edo.

Wilson a great fit for Buzz

How much has pg Duane Wilson progressed this summer? Hearing he could shoot up the rankings this year?

- @TheMUblueman

At Rivals.com, we've already been pretty aggressive with our ranking of the Milwaukee (Wisc.) Dominican point guard by ranking him No. 52 nationally in the class of 2013. At 6-foot-3, we like his size, his ability to score and most of all that when his jumper isn't falling he doesn't keep firing from deep but instead attacks and looks to make things happen off the dribble. Most of all, he's part of what is looking like an outstanding class for Buzz Williams and Marquette with four-stars Deonte Burton and Jameel McKay also on board. Wilson is a great fit for Williams' offense that emphasizes guards making plays off the dribble and he's the type of tough kid that fans of the Golden Eagles have become accustomed to.

Torren Jones leaving Dobson

Dobson senior power forward Torren Jones is transferring to basketball powerhouse La Porte (Ind.) La Lumiere, his mother, Cheryl, confirmed in a text message Friday morning.

Jones and his cousin, Jaron Hopkins, left Basha for the Mustangs this summer after their coach, Brad Pinter, was forced to resign following an underachieving season for the Bears in 2011-12. Jones averaged 19.6 points and 10.2 rebounds last season, but Basha lost its final three games and was knocked out of the Division I postseason in the second round. Jones attended the first two days at his new school but will not play a regular season game there.

Jones was offered a scholarship by Arizona before he entered high school, but his recruiting interest didn’t pick up again until this year, when he played very well in club ball evaluation periods to get offers from Marquette, Missouri, Oregon State, Washington State, Colorado, New Mexico, DePaul and Wyoming, according to Cheryl.

La Lumiere is a small, private college preparatory 90 minutes east of Chicago. Its roster is loaded with college-bound players and competes with the top prep schools in the nation. Jones’ transfer was first reported by Rivals.com.

I don't think we are all that interested in him.  He has made official visits to DePaul and Washington State and I have not seen his name connected with Marquette outside of some comments by his family.  He is a 6'7" PF, but we have others we are looking at in that position (Embiid, Washington)

JaJuan Johnson, SG, Memphis (Tenn.) Southwind: The Marquette signee slipped a bit during the post summer rankings of the class of 2013 and as it turns out dropping him down to No. 64 looks to have been a mistake. His jumper remains a little bit streaky and unique thanks to his flying right elbow, but he's rapidly developing other areas of his game. In particular, Johnson's become one of the most explosive players in his class off the dribble and has turned into an above the rim finisher.

By: William Whelan buffstampede.com

The 6-foot-2 guard started the summer with Belmont Shore and then joined Dream Vision. That wasn't all.

"It was alright," Sandifer said of his summer. "I only played 2 tournaments with (Dream Vision). They dismantled our 16 year-old team so played with Double Pump Elite.

Sandifer is currently ranked No. 79 on the Rivals150 list for 2014.
"I played well, better basketball towards the end of summer. If I had played with one team, I think it would have turned out better."

It didn't slow down his recruiting. He picked up interest from a wide array of schools but mentioned that Arizona, UNLV, Marquette, Georgetown and Stanford are recruiting him the hardest. While he is still wide open he said that he would like to start hearing from Duke.

When Sandifer last spoke to BuffStampede, he had a high opinion of the Buffs.

"I like the up-tempo style that they play at Colorado," he said. "I know a few people that go there so I followed them this past season. I used to work out with Spencer Dinwiddie when I was younger and I know Askia Booker because he was a senior at Price when I was a freshman. We played pick-up games all the time."

Despite the increased interest from other programs, that hasn't changed.

"I like them," he said most recently. "It seems like they want me to come visit. I think their style of play would fit my game."

Sandifer went on to say that he would like to make a decision by the end of AAU season in July 2013. Location, style of play and his relationship with the coaches look to be the most important factors in his recruitment.

While he lists only one offer, from the Buffs, he said that USC, Arizona and UNLV are all waiting on his freshman year transcripts from Price, in order to offer sometime in the future.

Looney's game has evolved

The evolution of Looney as a player and a prospect is one that continues to unfold. The 6-foot-8 (maybe pushing 6-foot-9?) junior forward at Milwaukee (Wis.) Hamilton broke onto the national hoops scene with the Milwaukee Running Rebels as a rising freshman. At the time, Looney was a skinny, wide-shouldered wing who loved to shoot deep jumpers and get on the glass and seemed like a natural small forward.

As time has gone by, Looney has grown into those wide shoulders. As we watched the No. 7 player in the class of 2014 over the weekend, we could see that his game is developing as well.

The part of Looney's game that has remained consistent during his development is the high volume at which he rebounds the ball. He's not one of those guys who is some kind of stupendous athlete who leaps over or runs by everybody. No, Looney is a grinder with great hands and a natural instinct for being in the right place at the right time. He reads where the ball will go, understands where misses tend to fall and has excellent reactions to get to and corral rebounds. Those same instincts and patience have turned him into a very good shot blocker.

That ability to rebound affords him lots of chances for easy scores around the rim. A growth spurt that has allowed him to fill out his once skinny frame and get a little taller has turned him into a more reliable interior finisher and somebody who can play with a bit more physicality. Because of that, it's probably time that we start looking at Looney more as a power forward than as a small forward on the next level. He can handle the ball, has a jumper that has to be respected and is an excellent passer, which will allow him to face up and be more versatile as a four who can play inside and out than as a three who will shoot and slash from the perimeter.

Something else that is becoming a regular occurrence is a big outing from White. A four-star prospect and 6-foot-8 forward who has always shown flashes of impressive ability, White has started to put it all together.

In the past he's been a bit flat in terms of emotion and aggression, but he's really ramped it up in both areas and the results have been impressive. He can shoot deep jumpers, handles it pretty well, has slashing ability and is a fluid athlete who can be put at various positions on the floor to generate matchup problems.

"I've had everybody telling me to just be confident because they know I can play like that," White said after a 20-point, seven-rebound effort. "I'm just relaxed out there and having a lot of fun."

White mentioned Marquette, Arizona, Florida and Notre Dame as schools coming at him hard. He said Kentucky has been starting to show interest, and he's starting to take notice of the new staff at Illinois. Indiana offered early but hasn't made much contact since, he said.

Eric Bossi Rivals.com

The better part of the spring portion of the grassroots circuit has been completed. Memorial Day looms as the last big spring weekend where a more unheralded prospect can build some buzz before July's open period.

Sandy Cohen won't be needing a big Memorial Day to build some buzz. The 6-foot-5 guard from Seymour (Wisc.) High has already done that thanks to his play with Playground Elite on the spring circuit.

He's also coming off a good junior season.

"My high school season went pretty well and we only lost five games all year and were a game away from going to state," said Cohen. "I did pretty good, I averaged like 20 points per game."

Relatively unknown just a few months ago, Cohen has seen his stock soar. He's currently a three-star prospect, but he'll likely move into the rankings and earn four-star status when the 2014 Rivals150 gets updated.

He can run the point, he can play off the ball, and he can be a scorer. His 6-foot-5 size and vision are impressive, but he's got to prove he can consistently hit from deep and needs to add strength.

Marquette, Providence, Kentucky, Illinois, Iowa are schools that he says have shown more recent interest, while he also has offers from Wisconsin Green-Bay, LaSalle, George Washington and Minnesota, among others. All the schools like that he can be moved around a lineup.

"They all say I'm pretty versatile," said Cohen. "I can play the one or two, it doesn't matter to me."

According to Cohen, he's trying to do his best to look into all of his options. He would like to take his time and is working on some visits for the summer. Cohen also admits to knowing a lot about one school in particular.

"Marquette was always my dream school, so they tried to get me to commit right away," said Cohen. "I just want to take a couple of visits and see what's out there.

"I'm going to go to Marquette in June and probably Minnesota too."

FWIW a 4 Star in the 2013 Rivals150 ranges from #27 to #113.......and the 2014 Rivals150 ranges from #21 to #100.  So Bossi must think he's quite solid to say that....

I expect a monster class for DePaul.

They've got schollies and PT to offer this year and next year:
McGhee, Morgan (transferring out), Young, Melvin and Kirk (also transferring) are going to be Seniors.
Non-Seniors transferring out are Robertson (6-10 So), Clemons (6-7 Fr) and Price (6-7 Fr).

That leaves:

6-5 G Marrero
6-1 G McDonald
6-9 F Ryckbosch
6-4 F Crockett
6-3 G McKinney

I expect a monster class for DePaul.

They've got schollies and PT to offer this year and next year:
McGhee, Morgan (transferring out), Young, Melvin and Kirk (also transferring) are going to be Seniors.
Non-Seniors transferring out are Robertson (6-10 So), Clemons (6-7 Fr) and Price (6-7 Fr).

That leaves:
6-0 G Dolins
6-5 G Marrero
6-1 G McDonald
6-9 F Ryckbosch

6-4 F Crockett
6-3 G McKinney
6-8 F Melvin
6-4 G Young
6-3 G McGhee

Given their abysmal condition, what leads you to conclude that they are going to have a monster recruiting year?  Just the fact that they have pt to offer?

DePaul has had schollies and PT for any good players for the past 10 years.  Doesn't lead to a monster class. Good recruiting, facilities and a plan is required.

MN is going to have a lot to offer though, the cupboard is pretty bare. Dream school maybe but with Wilson, Wilson, Dawson, & JJJ the competition will be tight.

Great players don't fear competition. If they did, who would go to Kentucky, Duke, etc.? Great players are confident and believe other recruits should fear them!

Evaluation of Sandy Cohen from Ryan James at Gopherillustrated.com

•   Any player that likes scoring easy baskets and pushing up their point totals should sign up to play with Sandy Cohen. This unselfish point guard has the quick handles to separate and the strength to edge the corner. Sandy consistently gets lane and when he does his focus is always dropping off assists to cutting teammates. If you cut to the rim when Sandy draws the help he will find you with a dime nearly 100 percent of the time.

Another evaluation of a guy we are in on:  Quadri Moore  (http://vmedia.rivals.com/IMAGES/PROSPECT/PHOTO/QUADRI-MOORE3_200_5_11.JPG)

Four-star big man Quadri Moore deserves some recognition for hitting the gym. A kid who has always had some skill, Moore hasn't always been in the best of shape. That's not the case now. A 6-foot-9 center with soft hands who can hold his ground, Moore has shed any remaining baby fat and is in great condition. He's a grinder that can play physically versus being an above the rim guy but he can step out and hit a jumper from between 12 and 17 feet with regularity.

Ranking of Illinois 2014 players from Illini rivals site:

11. Milik Yarbrough    Zion-Benton
Although he is extremely productive, questions surround his lack of list and overall athleticism. He is an old school scorer that will probably make everyone that downgrades him look silly down the road.

12. Paul Turner    St. Joseph's
The talent is there, but there are times when he forces shots and is very inefficient. He can shoot it and he is athletic enough, but sometimes doesn't play up to his abilities.

13. Peyton Allen    Chatham Glenwood
High major shooting guard that can stroke it from deep and knows how to get his shot off. I like his ability to pass it and handle it, but he lacks some athleticism that he may need at the high major level.

14. Amanze Egekeze    Huntley
He is still a bit of a project, but he rebounds and defends and has a little bit of an offensive game. If he grows 2 inches he becomes a player everyone wants.

15. Josh Cunningham    Chicago Morgan Park
Extremely athletic, Cunningham still has much room to grow as a player. This one is filled with potential, however.

16. Ore Agundande    St. Viator
Was very good in the high school season, but wasn't as good this spring. He can make shots and score, but has some work to do as a perimeter distributor.

17. Darreon Reddick    Belleville East
Solid guard that needs to continue to develop his shooting and overall game. Great size for his guard position.

18. Victor Law    St. Rita
Athletic wing that needs to develop his ball skills, but continues to improve. He is one that could move up this list over the summer when we see him more.

19. Dominique Matthews    St. Rita
His brother gets more hype, but the older Matthews is still a good player. He is a volume scorer and forces some shots, but there is potential present.

20. Darius Austin Cahokia
Austin continues to progress as a basketball player, and he fits the mold of a high major athlete. As his ball skills improve, he will move up the list.
