Title: St. John's seeking walk-ons
Post by: brewcity77 on October 16, 2011, 05:40:14 PM
It's not Marquette, but it is Big East basketball. With three players ruled ineligible for the Johnnies, they held open tryouts for walk-on players for next season. St. John's only has 8 scholarship players, and drew 26 prospective walk-ons with the hope that 5-6 could be good enough to join the team. Something tells me Lavin's boys are in for a sharp dropoff this season.

with pitt and cuse leaving i think it's going to be very important for st. john's to become a regular top 25 team...this isn't good for anyone.

They are still going to be fine in the long-run.  They would have struggled being so young this year anyway.

Providence should return to being a pretty good team in the next 2 years with the recruiting class they have coming in next year. Their improvement could be equally beneficial

BB is not the issue. ItsFB and all the perceived benefits of FB, FBOW.

BB is the issue for MU...especially if we're looking at only 4 BCS super-conferences...now or 5 - 10 years down the road.

Why worry about St. John's? Two more MU so-called recruits --- Richard Peters and Devin Thomas went to Washington State and Wake Forest respectively. Can't we get Anyone? This is sicki, sick, sick.

I don't think we extended an offer to Peters.  Devin Thomas is a lesser version of Steve Taylor.

We haven't been in on Peters or Thomas in months, not sure why those two would worry you. Willms is set to announce this upcoming weekend, not sure if that's good for us as he hasn't visited. I think we're in decent position with Philip Nolan, but as of right now he's still set to visit Clemson, who I'd guess is the favorite. He'll be there for the Clemson/UNC football game Saturday, and Brad Brownell was the first coach to visit him in-home during the recent period.

That said, Buzz has signed Jae Crowder, Davante Gardner, DJO, and Jimmy Butler in the late signing period in spring. He seems to like leaving a scholarship open in case the right player is available. With a number of top-100 players still available, more as-yet undiscovered gems, and potential JUCO breakout players, I would understand Buzz holding one open.

A class that includes Steve Taylor, Jamal Ferguson, and TJ Taylor wouldn't be bad at all. I'd like one more guy, but it should be the right fit, not just someone we add because they're there to be had.
