Marquette Basketball Friday Digest
Written by: noreply@blogger.com (Tim Blair)
Here's a quick look back at the week that was for the Marquette Warriors who now stand at 14-9 overall and 5-5 in the Big East. With eight regular season games left MU still has a puncher's chance at an NCAA bid though the lack of a quality road win remains an albatross for this bunch. The Warriors are off through next week (http://www.gomarquette.com/sports/m-baskbl/sched/marq-m-baskbl-sched.html) when they travel to USF on Wednesday, February 9 followed by a trip to Georgetown on Sunday, February 13.
Let's look back on the week that was:
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_wLC1BvCK-88/TUwVDN-S8kI/AAAAAAAAAT8/va9Ste4kssA/s1600/JFB-nadskick.JPG)-- MU started the week with a National Marquette Day victory over Syracuse (http://www.crackedsidewalks.com/2011/01/winning-so-much-better-than-losing.html).
-- John Pudner noted that MU's three wins over top-25 RPI teams strengthened MU's NCAA chances (http://www.crackedsidewalks.com/2011/01/3-rpi-top-25-wins-top-10-ncaa-seed.html) while we also noted that the fun with bracketology is just beginning (http://www.crackedsidewalks.com/2011/01/its-almost-february-which-means.html).
-- Dr. Blackheart joined us again for a post about pace and the rest of the schedule (http://www.crackedsidewalks.com/2011/01/guest-post-marquette-pace-and-rest-of.html) -- and rightly figuring that the way teams could continue to break down MU was to manage the pace better. This is something we'll look into again down the line.
-- DJO's fine performances in Big East play deserved attention (http://www.crackedsidewalks.com/2011/02/djo-dominating-big-east.html) -- this guy was quite a find by Buzz.
-- The MUTV Sports team rocked it out once again (http://www.crackedsidewalks.com/2011/02/mutv-sports-catches-up-with-warriors.html).
-- Heading into Villanova, Pudner figured it would take one of MU's best performances to-date in order to win (http://www.crackedsidewalks.com/2011/02/it-would-take-second-best-performance.html). I was not confident of a victory but expected a close game (http://www.crackedsidewalks.com/2011/02/warriors-seek-signature-road-win.html). Ultimately Pudner was right, MU didn't play at a high level and fell 75-70 to Villanova (http://www.crackedsidewalks.com/2011/02/defenseless-marquette-falls-at.html).
Additional updates of note:
- Buzz Williams is aggressively recruiting for 2011 roster help through the winter. Todd Mayo, the younger brother of O.J. Mayo, is considering Marquette among a host of other schools (http://www.nbebasketball.com/w3/2011-0202/todd-mayo-searching-for-own-path-to-basketball-glory/). Details on Mayo and his recruitment are here.
- 2012 stud and local product J.P. Tokoto talks about recruiting, Marquette and Buzz Williams with Fox Sports (http://www.foxsportswisconsin.com/02/03/11/JP-Tokoto-on-possibility-of-Marquette-ge/landing.html?blockID=403733&feedID=5059).
- Buzz is also active with 2012 kids including 6'10" A.J. Hammons (http://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=24194.0).
- 2011 signee Juan Anderson is featured in this article and video (http://www.csnbayarea.com/02/02/11/High-School-Hype----Castro-Valley-High-S/landing.html?blockID=402710&feedID=2497). Check it out.
- When in doubt MU should wear white jerseys. The team is 42-3 in the classic whites since the 2007-2008 season (http://www.gomarquette.com/blog/2011/01/marquette-jersey-records-2007-08-to-present.html).
- Marquette graduate Steve Novak is looking for a fresh start in the NBA Development League (http://nba.fanhouse.com/2011/02/03/steve-novak-formerly-of-dallas-mavericks-now-in-the-nba-d-leag/).
- Marquette graduate Wesley Matthews was selected to play in the upcoming NBA Rookie/Sophomore Challenge Game during the NBA All-Star Weekend (http://www.oregonlive.com/blazers/index.ssf/2011/02/blazers_wesley_matthews_picked.html).

Bahahaha! Just saw the banner hung in the background of CS:

-
good eyes, my friend.....Our tech team worked doggedly to update the wallpaper this week and that banner was a special addition. I think it replaced Crean's Great Alaska Shootout banner.
-
I just can't figure out why we're playing ND on the floor and main scoreboard, but there's a burry pic of home against cuse photoshopped next to the banner.

It was either that, or put a picture of Dodds there.

We should probably take a scoop poll on that one. :D
