Post by: Jay Bee on January 13, 2011, 03:53:34 PM
@Todd_Rosiak
#mubb receives verbal commitment today from 6-5 2012 wing Jamal Ferguson of Norfolk, Va. Ranked No. 62 in ESPN's Top 100. Will update.

Nice work to Buzz and his recruiting team. I'm guessing he watched us on Big Monday? I wonder if there is a DG connection, being from VA?

Rivals - #69 nationally, 4 stars, #14 SG

http://rivals.yahoo.com/basketballrecruiting/basketball/recruiting/player-Jamal-Ferguson-95016

Scout - NR, 3 Stars

http://scouthoops.scout.com/a.z?s=75&p=8&c=1&nid=4975685

ESPN -  #63 nationally, 95 rating, #15 SG

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/115688/jamal-ferguson

Via ESPN:
"Strengths:
Ferguson is a long and lean wing that can put the ball in the basket. He is a good slasher that is wired to score and is always in attack mode. He is very athletic and finishes with ease above the rim. Jamal has a solid stroke to 19 feet.

Weaknesses:
He is a little streaky but his shot is a weapon.

Bottom Line:
Ferguson's length allows him to be a solid defender with the potential of being a lock down defender in the future as he continues to develop. His size and length make him a force on the boards as he crashes in from the perimeter. Jamal is good now and has a very good upside."

Rivals has him at 6'3.

ESPN has him at 6'4" and projects him as a SG, not a wing...regardless, he sounds like an athletic "switchable" that is a lock down defender and can consistently put up strong numbers offensively...GREAT pick up!

Always good to get a commit.

I've seen him listed anywhere from 6'3'' to 6'5'' but every report says he can score at will. Be interesting to see if he sprouts a bit. If not, could be a natural replacement for DJO's spot at the 2.

Also interesting to see how this squares with the recruitment of Tokoto. It leaves MU in a spot where they're a bit handcuffed unless they've gotten indications they should look elsewhere.

Clearly, the sporadic use of Gardner hasn't burned the mid-Atlantic pipeline.

We sure as hell will have a lot of J's. Now we need to get JP

Someone asked about his real height?   Average them and you are close enough not to matter.   Hope he grows some.   But we haven't had a 6'4 flyer since Wade. (no, I am not expecting this kid to be the next Wade).     Buzz is putting together some interesting pieces.   Lets get a big (project) or a banger with one of the 11 schollies.

Agreed, but we still need a traditional shooter(s) IMO. That inability to consistently hit from outside early in the season has us down 3 or 4 losses at this point that could have been the other side of the coin.

Welcome to MU Jamal.

If DJO wasn't uncharacteristically off it would never have been an issue. While it never hurts to have another guy who can put the ball in the net, I believe there are enough shooters on this team.

Welcome to MU Jamal.

Facts beg to differ with you. Here are the Big East 3 point shooting percentage numbers:

1. Pitt 39.4
2. UL  38.0
3. GU  37.9
4. MU  37.8
5. ND  36.9
6.Vill   36.3
7.SYR 34.6
8.WVU34.6
9.UC   34.2
10 UCONN 33.8
11.RUT 33.5
12.PROV 30.8
13.SHALL30.3
14.STJ 30.0
15.SFLA29.6
16.DePaul 27.3

So we're 4th in the conference, in a statistical dead heat for 2nd and 3rd. We also have the same % as the UW Traditionals. Turns out that in spite of a poor start, 3 point shooting is one of our strengths. We need rebounders not more shooters.
Title: Re: Jamal Ferguson commits
Post by: MuMark on January 13, 2011, 06:58:52 PM
Even teams with good shooters have bad shooting games.

We were one of the best 3 point shooting teams in the country last year and still had some games when we couldn't throw it in the ocean.

4-18 from 3 against Florida State...lost by 1.

7-24 against Nova lost by 2

4-12 against Depaul

5-19 against Pitt

5-18 against SJ

4-23 against ND   :-[ (they were 3-21 and won!)

Kind of my point, though, he was off and we had no pure shooters to step in and fill the void.

In my mind our best teams this last decade have been ones with slashers, pure shooters and a solid inside.  Able to win in all three offensive phases of the game.

Our best teams in the last decade were 2002-3, 2001-2 and 2008-9. Only the 2002-3 team fits your description. the 2001-2 team had little inside and shot 3s at the same rate as this year's team (who you find lacking). The 2008-9 team had little inside and shot at a 34.7% clip from 3 (3.1% worse than this year).

Also interesting to see how this squares with the recruitment of Tokoto. It leaves MU in a spot where they're a bit handcuffed unless they've gotten indications they should look elsewhere.

Let me just say, that given the roster turnover we have seen over the past couple of years, it wouldn't surprise me in the least that we have more than two newbies on this team in Fall of 2012.  18 months is a long time from now.

And I am not going to speculate on who might leave...who might not show up...or if Buzz decides not to give one of his 2011 scholies.

From a fellow Virginia native, welcome Jamal!

I am thrilled that we can grab another great Virginia player while going up against ACC teams including Virginia and Virginia Tech in state and Maryland just to the north, as well as beating out Georgetown.

The Texas pipeline, and now big grabs from California and Virginia back to back, wow we are looking like a national team.  The program is awesome!

I wonder what his actual height is...

Whatever his actual height is, he sure seems to have some pretty long arms which could allow him to defend bigger than his height. It's not like when a defender elevates to contest a shot, he uses his head to contest the shot instead of his arms.

I'll be curious to see where else we use 2012 schollies. Pretty sure we only have 2 graduating scholarships in DJO and Crowder, so barring another transfer, we have one left. Not sure if I'd rather see it go to JPT, a big, or a point. With so many switchables on board, I think a big or point would suit our needs better. Love to see Buzz add Stokes or Nolan.

As I mentioned earlier, I doubt that when all is said and done we will only have one scholie remaining.  I am not convinced for instance that Buzz will use both of the ones for 2011.

If we have two left, Tokoto and Nolan.

I f we have a chance to land a big committment like Nolan in the next few month for 2012, we should do it.

If Tokoto still wants to come that is fixable. We have 2 sholarships yet available for 2011, and can keep one open for Tokoto. The key would be to get one of those 2012 guys to commit now, or soon, so we know what to do with the two remaining for 2011.
