Doubtful...just as 90% of our roster won't play in the NBA either.

Will he play in the NBA?

Uncertain, talk to the 8 ball.

But man that Vander Blue sure looks good.  Great passer, takes really smart shots, and plays hard-nosed defense.  What was the deal with his recruitment?  Did Wisconsin even send him a letter?  He was right in their back yard for crying out loud!

But our roster has a better chance, right?  Because many of our players are 'basketball players second' according to you.

And Gasser is just a 'traditional player', as you would say, like Kyle McAlarney.  Do you think the NBA likes 'traditional players'?

I believe I already said it was a poor choice of words on my part and I've even gone ahead and made fun of myself in a number of followup posts mocking my traditional player comments.  But certainly if you want to keep it going, that is your right.  Thanks for another article about race and implying a racial overtone by me (which the mods won't delete.   ::)) .

Do I think our guys have a better chance?  Who knows.  Depends on what the NBA is looking for.  Steve Novak was my example in the first post, Travis Diener is another....those guys somehow made the NBA despite not being phenomenal athletes (that doesn't mean they are poor athletes by any means but they weren't even the best athletes at MU).  That was my point, but I did a poor job of communicating it.  They had a set of specific skills they had refined to a point that made them indispensable despite not having the athletic ability as some other players.

Again, poorly stated by me, but I do wish we had a player or two on the team that is more of an "old school" (I'll get skewered again for that remark) spot up type shooter, that can bust a zone, etc.  DJO is one guy that can, I feel like we are short a pure shooter or two.  In my opinion.

Didn't his shoes shred, literally falling apart, as he dribbled up court? I think KO signed a deal with LA Gear (he would have been better off with BK Knights. At least we would have had Clyde Frazier on the marketing train.)

Think how far we have come since that sad, shabby LA Gear night.

My post from a prior thread (http://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=3040.0) on this:

I remember it well.  But I'm pretty sure it was Robb Logterman -- I'm positive it wasn't Smith [and pretty sure it wasn't Anglavar].  The funniest thing was that after his foot blew out of the side of his shoe, he kept slipping when he tried to get up and run because of his sweaty socks.

Do I long for the days of Mark Anglavar with the players he had around him?  Absolutely not.

Would I like to have someone like Novak, SC, Logtermann, Diener, Wardle, Acker,  etc that could consistently bury the three and give us an outside threat IN ADDITION to the players we have...yes, I would.  Don't get me wrong, DJO is fantastic...I just don't think we have enough of them that can thwart a team if they pack it in, cut down the lane penetration, etc.  Buycks is off to a good start.  Hopefully he can maintain that.

A true, inside outside game would be fantastic.  Look at the 2003 Final Four run and we had bigs, we had slashing guards, we had spot up shooters.  We could kill you from all over the place.

I'd rather compare them year to year.  Travis shot 45% his junior year, I believe DJO is a junior this year.  Travis' senior year he played hurt with a wrist injury, shin issue, etc...then ultimately knocked out with the broken hand.

So if you want to compare junior year to junior year....sure, I'll take the bet.  Charity of choice.

You are correct, it was Logterman. And it is also true that he kept slipping because of his socks. That was a decided low point in the storied history of Marquette basketball. I was living in Hong Kong at the time and a colleague who was an insufferable Aggie worked the "Marquette K Mart shoes" into as many conversations as possible. People may think the Spanish O'Donnell's are embarassing (in fact they are) but the LA Gear incident was far worse.

I remember it well.  But I'm pretty sure it was Robb Logterman

Correct - even some additional detail from the wiki:
http://wiki.muscoop.com/doku.php/men_s_basketball/robb_logterman
Quote
Logterman scored in double figures 14 times, including his first two collegiate games (and six of his first seven) at NCAA finalist Duke (11 points) and at Kansas (20 points), where he hit on 7 of 12 field goals (3 of 6 three-pointers). The Kansas game was televised on ESPN and was remembered for showcasing Robb's uncanny knack for destroying L.A. Gear shoes.

And of course, this was one of the pivotal events that led to the fall of LA Gear...
http://www.turnaround.org/Publications/Articles.aspx?objectID=1806
Quote
Then, the company had a problem when a pair of its sneakers fell apart, literally, on national television. A college basketball player from Marquette University who was wearing L.A. Gear shoes ended up hitting the floor because his shoes fell apart. When you’re struggling to enter men’s performance shoe market, this is not a good thing.

I'd rather compare them year to year.  Travis' senior year he played hurt with a wrist injury, shin issue, etc...then ultimately knocked out with the broken hand.

Travis also played for the Bronzed Beast of Bloomington who couldn't assemble the requisite talent to field a competitive team. The shame of the first round NIT blow out loss at home to Western Michigan is too painful for words.

My fault, I was thinking DJO vs Diener.  With Diener hurt his senior year, doesn't seem like a fair bet....you're not comparing apples to apples in terms of health.

I'm actually offering you a better shooter (DJO) against Dienier when he wasn't hurt, his junior season  Want the bet?

We taking someone other than DJO, who we both agree is the one proven outside threat.....  Here's your quote:

DJO is one guy that can, I feel like we are short a pure shooter or two.  In my opinion.

So I chose the guy who I think will carry that burden, Buycks. He's a senior, so comparing him to Diener's senior year is apples to apples. Saying Diener was hurt is a cop out. His points, assists and rebounds all went up his senior year, but you're claiming his % went down because he was injured? His % went down because he was the only outside option.

Buycks vs Diener is my offer.

Wow, jumping on that bandwagon a little early aren't we? I like DJO, probably take him over McNeal, but Diener? No. I think Id still trust Diener to take a shot over DJO, and definitely hit a FT, in the final minutes.

Dude, he was talking about DJO's 3 pt % as a sophomore vs. Diener's as a junior. DJO's was higher, hence the million dollar wager. It wasn't a debate about the relative merits of the two, nor was there any bandwagon jumping.

Diener is a much better overall guard than DJO. Better ball handler, better passer, better free throw shooter. DJO is more athletic and bigger. Diener mentally tougher. I much rather have Diener taking a shot with game on the line than DJO. Heck I do not even want DJO taking a free throw with the game on the line.

just posted in another thread but I guess I'll do it here too...gotta get my post count up  ;)

I'm not overly concerned about our low 3-point shooting %.  It's on a VERY small base...once we start shooting more 3's the % will come up.  We haven't had to shoot 3's in our early games because we could either drive to the bucket or pass the ball down low against smaller less athletic teams.

Not sure that Duke is the best team in the land to test this theory against, but what the heck.

Let's not forget DJO...he may be cold now, but does anyone really expect he won't get his 3P% up to at least 38% this year? My expectation is that in the coming week, he blows up on someone. Let's hope it's tomorrow night.
