Title: As frustrating as a loss as I can remember.....
Post by: duanewade on March 18, 2010, 09:01:56 PM
Saw it coming the whole time and it still happened just like a nightmare in spite of multiple opportunities to pull ourselves out of it....officiating also was a difference in this game.

Officiating was def a difference.  I hate to blame the refs but common, ticky tack garbage and phantom fouls

again i really beleive we deserved to lose that game, thats why im not to crazy about this. The way we played defense those last ten minutes and how we got scared to score the ball we should have lost. So its all good. Next year will be fun to watch

Seriously, is there any way Marquette could actually be the team to hit a last second shot in the tourney?

I love Buzz as much as anyone but he got outcoached on this one also.....sent the team into a shell with a 15 point lead and once this team starts playing timid and the other team gets momentum they revert back to the FSU and NC State losses and start to see it slip away.

Hell no. We have every single basketball god against us!

Great year, let's make it six in a row next year, keep it building!

Only one team ends the season happy.  Pass the RWB's

What a fitting way to end the season.  Blowing a 15 point lead and loosing the game in the final seconds.  However, this was still a succesful season considering how much we lost and our preseason expectations.

As soon as we got up by 15, I knew we were going to blow it.  That was the worst thing that could have happened, having such a big lead.  Not surprised to lose another heartbreaker, just pissed at myself for actually thinking we had a chance

Honestly, when then were pulling away early in the second half,  I kept feeling worse because I knew UW would come back and the bigger the comeback the bigger the momentum wave that carries them.

No..he didn't get outcoached - he got hosebagged by the refs.  When we went up 15..UW resorted to overdenying everything, hounding the hell out of Acker..while hacking him, bumping him...not one call.  Refs let UW get away with extremely agressive D.  When you defend that hard, there are fouls that can be called.  Refs decided to swallow the whistle.  Unless of course it meant giving Pondexter a call...after the refs saw the ball didn't go in..with a terrible late whistle.

I am as frustrated as everyone else but can we really blame the loss on the referees when we blew a 15 point lead in the second half and gave up 5+ offensive rebounds in the last two minutes?

i can't blame him too much for that D on the winning shot, acker or cubillan should have dropped on the drive to help on the low block.  but i've never seen a forward pass up so many shots inside 8ft.  even the commentators said he didnt want to shoot.

edit:  just replayed it, the color guy (forgot his name) said as Jimmy passed it off to DJO, "Butler was hesitant, didn't want the shot..."

The crazy thing was we got burned a lot by helping that lead to a kick out for three, but the one time they had to help, nobody did.

What was with Cubillan running the point. He was just sitting out in no-mans-land dribbling away until he realized there was a shot clock. I was seriously questioning Buzz's decision not to have Acker handling the ball. Our offense stagnated and we stopped playing defense and they shot themselves back into the game.

Good Game MU, your team is tough, I give you serious props and respect, but no one gave UW any, and now we can show why we were a top 15 team starting the season. This was good for us since we came in under the radar. Jay Bilas can suck it, so can Matt Jones, who said this on cbssports.com

20.  You Will Not Watch Marquette vs Washington:  Its totally unwatchable basketball.  Grind it out, punch each other in the face, game in the 50s.  If this game were a movie, it would be anything starring Sandra Bullock, pre-"Blind Side."  Avoid at all costs.

WRONG WRONG WRONG, MU played a great game hit 3's like I've never seen, Hayward is for real and they rebound like champs despite their size. UW can run with ANYONE, we are built for speed and offense and thrive on pushing the rock, good call Matt, a game in the 50's, apparently he's never seen Marquette play either cause they both lit it up

21.  Having Said That, Marquette is the Lock of the Year:  Washington has literally no chance of winning this game...NO CHANCE.  Right now the line is a pick 'em...Vegas didnt watch Washington play and neither did you.  They won the Pac 10 Tournament, but you, me, Spero Dedes, Dan Werner and Ali from Northern Iowa could have won the Pac 10 Tournament this year.  Put it all on Marquette.

No chance? Pac-10 might be down but I hope this will prove we can play. Marquette your team is tough, good luck next year.

^This.  There's NO WAY we had more team fouls than they did in the second half. It's simply impossible. Mo was getting abused.

that was so bad I couldn't do anything but laugh.  "Oh, he missed the shot with an airball? I guess there must have been a foul!"

How about the jump stop by them before Zar's third foul.  jump stop from the left box into the lane, no shot there, he then steps back to his left where he started from (after a complete stop) and that's NOT a travel?

They made their layups, we didn't. they were able to drive to the basket without penalty and were aided by no calls on their very agressive defense. Our defense didn't hold up and our offense flailed. sad ending to a very exciting year
Title: Re: As frustrating as a loss as I can remember.....

What horrible offense.. Every time they get a big lead they go to a slow it down  offense and give it all right back. Fooking stomp on their throats and keep the momentum going.  Not settle for a last second shot or turn the ball over... That does nothing for our rebounding disadvantage and doesn't play into their style of D.

We got buzzed no doubt about.  Yeah the refs pissed me off to but thats no excuse for the offensive clusterfook

UW pretty much erased DJO in the second half, and Butler was awful all night (in part thanks to the refs ). End of story. A 6-5 Center and a 5-8 PG cannot beat a team like that by themselves, even though they came pretty close.

I know now why we got a 6 seed...UW was no 11 seed. Probably a fair amount of proceedure in that match-up. That was an 8-9 game if I've ever seen one.

I kind of felt the same way... there was a lot of bumping, handchecking, and swiping that wasn't called.  I don't usually blame refs but that was evident to me.  Also, I understand Lazar didn't want to pick up any fouls on D, but when he decided to part ways like the Red Sea and let Washington drive by, he would never even put a hand up; same thing happened when he was the 2nd help defender.  Horrible defense throughout the game, we let them dictate the pace from the outset, and there was a lot of handchecking/bumping that just wasn't called.

In the end, great season.  We'll all feel better tomorrow.

You know how pathetic it sounds when people on this board consistently blame the refs after every loss?  The refs were consistently calling it close.  People always remember the close calls that go against them, but they never remember the calls that go for them.

Did they miss some?  Sure.  But Romar changed up his defense and we blew a 15 point lead.

Yea, Zar did that a few times that lead to gravy baskets. It's not like he had 4 fouls either.

I thought the huge key for Washington was Turner. Those four threes were huge from a guy averaging 5 points on the year.

We were great offensively overall except for Butler, we just couldn't get stops or get defensive rebounds late.

sorry, he got outcoached, again, by simply trying to slow the play, again, after getting a double digit lead, again.  there's way too much time left to turn to milk the clock type offense, especially against a team that won the Pac-10*.  did the refs seemingly let UW get away with more physical play in the 2nd half, sure did.  but that's what happens when one team appears to be playing on their heals and one is being the aggressor.  roles were reversed when MU was taking it to UW.  you look weak/timid in the face of aggressive play refs/announcers/fans aren't going to see you being fouled, just being out played by the better team.

* i know it's a down year for the Pac-10, but it's still a bcs league, and their best teams in a down year are as good or better than most mid major teams in a good year and in the same ballpark as Big East #5- 12 teams.

I can't argue with this.  UW extended their defense and we had no response for about five minutes.  Once we started to figure it out and break it down, it was a toss up game that we lost.

I was thinking the same thing.  I don't think I wasted 30 seconds on a Utah State forum after our first round win last year.  I guess he's well aware that their demise comes next round (unless, of course, they're allowed to molest the opposing PG again, then they might win by 2...)

actaully MU did respond to UW's over play unfortunately we turned the ball over 3-4 times before we did.  After that we spread the floor pretty well and drove the ball, unfortunately Acker and Cubillan both missed relatively uncontested layups off those drives.

As much as I loved Acker and Cooby's effort this year they were so severly undertalented compared to the guards of the other top BE teams.  hat coupled with the lack of a defending rebounding big man and we really struggled to defend talented teams and Washington is a s talented as any team we played all year.

Fair point.  But the basic point is that UW made a defensive change that we didn't figure out, and take advantage of, until we blew the entire lead.

Glad I could help you need anything you can get after choking that hard.

That's a lot of smack talk from a fan of a team that barely won it's conference tournament which is the only reason they are not in the NIT.

lets stop whining about the refs' and just accept the fact that buzz failed to coach at the ncaa tournament level needed to win,  total defensive collapse , and jimmy butler was as soft as butttttahhhhhhhh!!!!  matador defense and not going strong to the hoop because he is afraid of contact!

choke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!     at least those of you worried about losing buzz can now rest easy.

Wow someone actually makes the guy who called the loss with 4 minutes left look like a great MU fan.
