Title: Wasn't MU ripped by Badger fans for doing this same thing?
Post by: ChicosBailBonds on November 08, 2006, 11:56:20 PM
Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I recall many Badger fans raising holy hell about us playing Southern Mississippi in Green Bay as a road game.  They said it wasn't fair, it's bad for college sports, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Then I read this tonight....and oh the irony that Green Bay is involved....so they're proposing playing their "away" UNLV football game in Green Bay.

UW wants to play football in Lambeau

Madison - University of Wisconsin officials, bolstered by the success of the Frozen Tundra Hockey Classic in February, are trying to move UW's 2007 football game against Nevada-Las Vegas to Lambeau Field.

The Las Vegas Sun reported UW officials have made two offers to move the game, set for Sept. 8 in Las Vegas, to Green Bay. The first offer was $1 million; the second $1.3 million.

Messages left with UW coach Bret Bielema and associate athletic director John Chadima, in charge of scheduling for the football team, were not returned Wednesday night.

According to The Sun, UNLV athletic director Mike Hamrick declined both offers.

"I just think it sends the wrong message," Hamrick told The Sun.

A crowd of 40,890 fans watched UW defeat Ohio State, 4-2, in The Frozen Tundra Classic.

John Jones, then executive vice president and CEO of the Green Bay Packers, told The Journal Sentinel at the time he was intrigued by the idea of seeing UW play a football game in Lambeau Field.

Jones could not be reached for comment Wednesday. Last February, he acknowledged the most significant obstacle would be the late release of the yearly NFL schedule - in April. That generally is too late for a college team to have a vacant date on its schedule.

"That would be a hurdle to get over," Jones said at the time. "But I think it is important that there is a strong relationship between the Green Bay Packers and the University of Wisconsin. Whether it would ever come to a football game remains to be seen...But we'll always look at options if it is that good."
Title: Denied

Apparently, UW denies this:

Madison - University of Wisconsin officials today denied published reports that the school was trying to move the 2007 football game against Nevada-Las Vegas to Lambeau Field.

"Contrary to published reports, at no time has the UW Athletic Department had conversations with UNLV officials regarding moving our 2007 game to Lambeau Field," UW officials said in a release. "It is unfortunate that published reports have suggested otherwise. We have confirmed that UNLV officials were approached by a third party about moving our game, but that contact was done without our knowledge and without our involvement in any offer made to UNLV by that third party."

The Las Vegas Sun originally reported UW officials had made two offers to move the game, set for Sept. 8 in Las Vegas, to Green Bay. According to The Sun, UNLV athletic director Mike Hamrick declined both offers. "We apologize for any inconvenience these erroneous published reports may have caused Badger fans who have already made their plans to travel to Las Vegas for our game. We can assure you that we will be playing that game in Las Vegas as scheduled."

According to a story today in the Journal Sentinel about the Las Vegas Sun report, messages left with UW coach Bret Bielema and associate athletic director John Chadima, in charge of scheduling for the football team, were not returned Wednesday night.

I'm enjoying their thread on how much Bo Ryan is like Al McGuire....good grief.  Or the thread about how well liked Bo is because of a student article today about him....Bo is respected greatly by the other Big Ten coaches, but he isn't liked by many of them.  From someone that has worked quite a bit with the Big Ten channel and it's launch, this is information that is well known throughout the conference.
