Title: Famous Marquette Alumni
Post by: SoCalwarrior on February 06, 2007, 07:04:05 PM
Figured we needed to establish our own list as well.  Here is the beginning of what should be a much longer list.  Feel free to make your own additions, including esteemed businessmen and politicians.

To insert a picture, just click reply and then click on the "Insert Image" icon above the edit window (it looks like a picture frame).  That will insert [ img][ /img].  You paste the image link in the middle of the "][" part.  If you're confused by this, quote this post and take a look at what you see in the edit window.

The Free Money Guy - About 1 month after the Marquette Magazine had a blurb about him being an MU grad, I took a business trip to Boston.  As I was leaving M.I.T., where I made my Voice of Customer visit, I spotted the Free Money guy in a Cambridge park on the Charles River doing what looked like him filming a commercial.  You got to love the Riddler suit.

Matthew lives near me in DC.  He drives a Cooper Mini with question marks all over it and summer drives a scooter with the same.  Definitely knows how to attract attention.

"A product of Proviso East High School in Maywood, Illinois, Rivers earned the nickname "Doc" from former Marquette coach Rick Majerus, when he wore a "Dr. J" t-shirt to a summer basketball camp. Rivers played for the United States at the 1982 World Championship of Basketball, leading the U.S. to a silver medal and earning tournament MVP honors after averaging a team-best 18.6 points per game During the summer of 2001, he served as an assistant coach for the USA Men's Basketball Team at the Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia, that captured the Gold Medal.

Rivers earned a pre-law/political science degree from Marquette in 1985 and was honored by the Pro Basketball Writers with the 1990 J. Walter Kennedy Basketball Citizenship Award."

In my opinion, if you write a book about your life and the book is made into an Oscar winning movie, then you're famous.  Or, perhaps, infamous.

OT-- Camacho might be the current governor of Guam, but he cannot hope to live up to the standards set by the governor of Guam when I lived there -- Ricky Bordallo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricardo_Bordallo).  Ricky certainly had a sense of style, right up to the very end.

He didn't graduate, as he took an extended summer vacation one year. In the movie, they hold up a Marquette t-shirt, while searching his luggage.

Steve Bertrand who does news on WGN radio is an alum and big booster.  Also, Charlie Pierce the Boston sportswriter and panelist on Wait Wait Don't Tell me on NPR talks about his MU days.

Please strike Bertrand from the list.  If someone even suggested he was famous, I'm afraid his head might explode beyond its already inflated status.  I often have to apologize to my own peeps for Bertrand, who can't seem to read the news without his own editorial spin; one I don't share.
Let's just say that he was a happy guy in January.

Nick D'Agosto was the guy on Heroes and The Office.  He was my roommate at MU and also here in LA for a few years.  But he's been living in his own (sweet) place for a few years now, so you can lay the "he must not be successful because he still lives with a bunch of dudes" argument to rest.

you can also catch his work in the feature films ELECTION (w/ matt broderick and reese witherspoon) FIRED UP (lead role) and ROCKETSCIENCE.  He just left for Mexico a few days ago to start shooting another feature opposite the lovely Camilla Belle.

if we are going to do local celebrities... rob hart (currently of 720 WGN news in chicago and formerly of WTMJ radio in milwaukee) graduated from MU a few years back.

as did an Illinois state senator and member of crain's business magazines "top 40 under 40"... MU's Dave Sullivan

I believe Dave is no longer a State Senator and has become a lobbyist.  He also is no longer under the age of 40.

The guy who played Billy Jack was an MU grad. So too was William Hayes, the guy who got rolled up in Midnight Express. From the movie I think his back side  got rolled up, too while he was in that Turkish prison.

The guy who played Billy Jack was an MU grad.

Not exactly.  For decades Tom Laughlin(Billy Jack) has lied about his past.  At various points he's claimed to have attended and played football at several different schools, including Marquette, Minnesota, Indiana, Wisconsin and the University of South Dakota.

While MU did have a guy named Tom Laughlin that played footbal during the correct period, they are not the same guy.

Got it. We've all been there, brother. Back in the wilder single days the Fighter Bars were usually well stocked with a very high spandex factor of young women dedicated to supporting military aviation. There were mornings, however, when I  wondered how could my radar have been so badly calibrated, if you know what I mean...

D'Agosto was born in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of Deanna Rae (née Vellinga) and Alan D'Agosto, Omaha's major Arby's restaurant franchisee.[1][2][3] His mother is from Sioux City, Iowa, while his father is from Omaha.[4]

Mr. Metcalfe is someone we should be very proud of, not just for his athletic achievement but his Congressional record and eventual standing up to the Daley Machine in Chicago.

Gwen Moore is an MU grad and a Congresswoman from Milwaukee as well. Worth the "famous" list, as is Joan Biskupic, who covered the Supreme Count for the Washington Post and USA Today and wrote a book about Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

Incidentally, I don't think Tom Snyder ever was graduated from Marquette.

Heard a similar comment on the radio this morning that one of the actresses on the Golden Girls was 50 years old when it was filmed and to compare her to JLo who is also 50.  What a difference in what age 50 means between the mid-80's and 2020.

I don't think the women on the Golden Girls had the amount of cosmetic surgery that J-Lo has.   ::)

Actually, a reboot of Golden Girls is in the works.  So far Jane Lynch and Cyndi Lauper have been cast.
