I was thinking about this on the way home last night when the BoDeans came on the radio. During my time at Marquette I was able to witness some amazing music/concerts ('87-'91). So who would you all put in your top 3 in each of the following categories?
Marquette Bands:
1) Surrender Dorothy
2) Your my Lunch (not sure if a true Marquette band, although I know a couple had attended Marquette for a semester or two)
3) The Gufs (I'm pretty sure I worked with a guy on Safety Patrol that was in the band - but not sure if they were all from Marquette)
Local Bands:
1) The BoDeans (saw them on a Wednesday night free concert at the Maritime festival - Elton John was playing to a sold out crowd at Marcus - but 15,000+ still showed up to see the BoDeans)
2) Pat McCurdy (Anyone else at Serb Hall during Senoir Week '91?)
3) Paul Cebar & the Milwaukeeans
Top Marquette ASMU shows:
1) Peter Murphy & Nine Inch Nails (wasn't a Peter Murphy fan and had never heard of Nine Inch Nails so I didn't go, Doh!)
2) 10,000 Maniacs & Tracy Chapman
3) Matthew Sweet (he played to an empty Student Union in Dec '91)

I heard a rumor that Pearl Jam played an ASMU show shortly before they released "10". Can anyone confirm or deny?

Pearl Jam did in fact play a show at ASMU prior to becoming well known. I was in school at the time ('89-'93) but can't remember the year. Of course, me being the dumbass that I am did not attend for some reason or another, although a bunch of my friends did.

Sum 41 played at the AMU in 2001 or 2002... I was a sophomore.
That was such a weird concert. They were on the rise at that time and it seemed about 125 people attended the concert.

I'm a '90 grad. Any mention of that era has to include Jiggles Fest.
The best show I saw was the summer between my junior and senior years. I friend took me to some east side club to see the Violent Femmes play under a different name just before releasing their third album. Now *that* was a show.

My favorite Jiggles Fest moment was when it was moved to the Eagles Club because of rain, but everyone went down to the Lake anyway. We drained a couple half barrels that afternoon...and then went to the Eagles Club that night. I think that was Spring of 90.

That sounds about right.
I know for fact in '88 it was at the Domes, '89 can't remember, '90 can't remember and '91 in some park down by the Lake.

It was Lallapolooza before Lallalpolooza, full day of concerts - started at noon I think, and ran until.......? Was free for Marquette students. Transportation was provided. Was definitely byok (bring your own keg).

I was a Building Manager at the AMU (along with Chicos) the first 2 years it was open. I remember working a weekend night when there was a concert that we were totally unprepared for. There were hundreds of non-MU people there and it was chaos. People smoking in the lounge areas and dropping their lit butts on the carpeting and, oh yeah, we were so distracted trying to keep the building from burning down and trashed that we left a meeting room on the 3rd floor unlocked after a some group's meeting and a VCR was stolen. I later heard someone say they heard someone was trying to sell it on Wells St. later that night.
I don't know how they kept be from quitting after that night.
As the years past, I kept trying to remember who the band was. My wife thinks it was Pearl Jam, but I guess I couldn't believe a band that ended up so big could have been at the AMU.

Hands down the best MU band ever is West of Everywhere. Circa 1991-95.
The front man Tom Gillard was an amazingly talented vocalist. Wondered whatever happened to him? I've always thought that if American Idol started ten years earlier that that Gillard guy would be a super star. Can't believe how talented he was (hopefully still is).
Might needs to go fire up some "Four Eyed" right now.
Close 2nd might be Secret Goldfish.

That might go down as the best student government sponsored concert of all time, at any college.
And that's high praise coming from me, a guy who helped convince Southbound to play in a friend's house after their AMU West Mall outdoor concert was rained out.

you're all prob too young, but late 60's, the best was the messengers. all 5 from MU, and before they signed with motown, they were on or around campus every weekend.

2) Pat McCurdy (Anyone else at Serb Hall during Senoir Week '91?)
That night was insane--if I'm not mistaken it was the inspiration for a McCurdy song called "Those God Damn College Kids". McCurdy once told me his sound guy was up all night after that gig cleaning his equipment b/c it was drenched in beer. I also recall someone trying to do a naked beer slide down the aisle of the bus on the way home. Don't think that floor made for a good sliding surface. Thanks for bringing back a memory I hadn't thought of in ages.
Speaking of bands, I thought Big Sky was great during my MU years. The trombone player/female vocalist was very easy on the eyes.

I think PJ technically played the Varsity Theater, not the AMU.
I remember you could buy a bootleg video from some of the local record stores back in the late 90's. It was clearly the varsity theater.

Yes, Pearl Jam played at the Varsity and not the AMU. You can still buy the video off of ebay and other places on the internet. I remember my freshman year English instructor telling us about running into Eddie Vedder at the 'Lanche twice. Once after the MU show and once later on. Eddie told him it was his favorite Milwaukee bar.

I think Southbound is the only band I remember, well, sort of remember. Last time I saw them play was at the Glock. They played in the middle basement area between the front and back bars. Good times.
I also may or may not have seen Shaggy at the VT freshman or sophmore year.
Wasn't there a rumor that the video for Even Flow was filmed at the Varsity.

Actually, the timeframe isn't right. They played at MU on 5/1/1990. That was before AMU even opened.

I remember a few good shows during my 98-02 run; Travis, Howie Day, Sum 41, Rahzel from The Roots, Pat McGee Band, and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.
Pat McGee was a very cool gu. The band went out to Hegs after the show, threw the VISA down and bought the bar for like 3 hours.

Scatterway was an MU band from about 99-02. Played the Annex a lot. I was their manager/show booker/tech/etc.

I worked at the Union and Varsity Theatre while in school (along with MUENG92) so I got to see a few good bands.
I remember when 10,000 Maniacs came to play and Tracy Chapman opened up. No one knew who Chapman was. Total ticket price for both bands = $2. I kid you not. I still have a copy of the ticket in one of my scrapbooks.

The only MU band I remember from my time (98-02) was Little Blue Crunch Things, and in an effort to follow my mom's advice... I have nothing to say.

Do they still have SPAM Jam in front of the union? Some good local indie bands (Promise Ring, Pele) played there in the late 90s. My old roomate's bands played a couple years.

I was a senior and had a poli-sci quiz with Dr. Wolfe on Friday, so I didn't spend my $2 to see the Tracy Chapman/10000 Maniacs show. Dumb. Second biggest regret behind not going with my roommates to go see the Grateful Dead in August of 87 right before the start of classes. I saw the BoDeans in the student union in the fall of 84, right before they signed. Great show. MU bands I actually saw were Surrender Dorothy and Private Joy (?). Lurch, did you come to the concert/party in my backyard during the fall of 87? 5 houses in a row in the 2100 block of Michigan, knocked down some fences, bought some kegs, had a concert/party/stupid good time. I think the spring concert in 87 was Tommy Shaw of Styx fame. Could not have possibly cared less. Good show in the student union in the fall of 86 (IIRC) by a band called Bon Ton Society, but I think they were from Chicago. Jigglesfest 88, at the domes, was one of the great times ever.

No way....I lived in on of those houses my Senior year in 1991. The middle house if I remember...upstairs. Made for easy Taco Bell runs late at night.

The one I lived in had a front porch on the second floor from which we would attempt to....errrr... "reach" the sidewalk with our used and processed MGD. And I think there had been a B and E on the first floor during the summer before we moved in. I can't remember if it was the second or the third from the west end of the 5 in a row.

We resurrected Jigglesfest on September 20, 2008 at Bradford Beach. Many bands that played at Jigglesfests in the 80's and 90's got together to play. The line up included two different incarnations of Surrender Dorothy, R. Mutt, Freezone, Southbound, Groovy Sparrow and 2 current MU bands, The Nodes and Planet Dastardly. We're on again this year for Saturday, September 19th from Noon - 7:00 at Bradford Beach. Please help us spread the word! I agree with Navin...no Replacements on campus. I did see the Romantics at the Varsity in around 1983, right before their "In Heat" album came out. (Great show) And the Call.
Didn't the Lemonheads play a show in the union in the early '90's?

The Pearl Jam show was the best concert I've ever been to. Eddie climbed to the top of the lighting rig and belted a song or two. I definitely thought he was going to fall. Dave Krusen threw a drumstick into the crowd and I, along with two others, caught it and wrestled for it for two songs before I ripped it free. It sits on my desk to this day.

I forgot about that. I was one of the 100 or so people stranded at Serb Hall waiting while the bus driver either cleaned the bus, or had someone else clean the bus. From what I remember we waited for well over an hour.

I saw fIREHOSE at one of the outdoor union shows. I think it was 1990. Really great show.
The Bodeans, if I remember correctly, were still called "Da BoDeans" when they played the grill.

Would have loved to have seen fIREHOSE. I just remember a lot crappy ska bands (Mustard Plug, Scofflaws, Invaders...) playing in the late 90s. And one of those stupid swing bands (Big Bad Voodoo Daddy?) that I didn't go see.

I remember many great bands coming thru Milwaukee betwen 82 and 86. With the hometown Violent Femmes killing it. I remember one afternoon in the cafeteria outside the Mug Rack when Brian Ritchie and DeLorenzo showed up as a band called The Knobs? and proceded to play a couple of killer sets....

Domino Theory rings a bell, I think they played during my Freshman Orientation week (fall '87).

One other that was not an MU band but played the MU Grill at least 2 times during my years was Milwaukee Band "Those X-Cleavers"
They had a couple of minor hits and were a blast to see at the Grill.

I went to MU from 89-93. I played in the MU based band "Secret Goldfish". A friend from the MU days pointed me to this site. MU has always had great, fun bands. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few but I had a blast listening to and playing shows with several talented musicians from the late 80's and early 90's. Plus the free beer (being a broke college kid) made playing out that much more fun!
Some of my favorites:

The cool thing about these bands...most, if not all of them wrote their own songs and put out tapes and CDs. I still enjoy listening to those tracks today.
I saw a few posts regarding Pearl Jam. They played the Varsity Theatre. My buddy and I were local "roadies" for the band. We drove them around town, to music stores and their hotel (they stayed at the Pfister). MU booked Pearl Jam just before the album "10" took off. Pearl Jam was playing venues much larger (and for more money) by the time the rolled into Milwaukee. MU got very lucky...the band almost cancelled the show when they realized the varsity theatre had seats that could not be removed! This was one of the first shows at MU that required an MU ID to get in due to the band's popularity. A very cool moment in MU Concerts. MU always did a great job booking bands and the students did a great job forming bands (not sure where the MU bands play today...there aren't too many bars left in the MU neighborhood that can handle live music) and putting on shows. Most important...the general student population supported their friends which made the whole "Marquette Music Scene" an awesome thing. And Jiggles Fest?...that is a weekend I'd go back to the late 80" for in a heartbeat!

+1 to the X-Cleavers. They put out a greatest hits cd last summer which has brought back some great memories from the MU Grill shows in the early '80's.

Well... my run @ MU ended quite recently, but I have to say, I am a little disappointed we didn't have Jigglesfest! What a blast! however, my roommate frosh year went to see Ben Folds @ the VT and he stopped and they watched the VP debate in the middle of his set . . . craziness!
band I followed @ MU: a ska group called "Catch of the Day" which included a friend of mine named Joe Peschel, really a good group, caused me to see them play @ both the Rave & @ "Skappleton" up in Appleton on year where Suburban Legends was playing.
Reel Big Fish also played @ the VT, they were fun as usual.
Actually, in recent years the quality of the performers hasn't been that great(???) Other shows I knew of were Gavin de Graw . . . i'm having a hard time coming up with others. Obviously the Rave is right down the street, and they book many many acts that ppl want to see so that may be a part of it.
My favorite band is still PEP band though! ;)

I was more of a Mad Taxi fan (renamed Revolver in '00) w/ Cassedy on slide guitar... they played alot at the Up & Under.

All Concerts were held in the ballroom of the old Student Union so they didn't normally bring in anyone that would draw a large crowd. If it was warm enough outside they were on the Mall lawn though usually only after freshman orientation. We didn't have many concerts since the other venues in town usually got all the best acts. I was always jealous of friends at Ohio State who had the likes of Elton John, Jethro Tull, and other BIG bands of that period.
We had Laura Nyro, (a VERY stoned) Richie Havens, Blues Project (with Al Kooper), War, The Mahavishnu Orchestra (with Jon McLaughlin, Jan Hammer and Billy Cobham), Steve Goodman, John Prine,and few other less notables (how much less notable could they be?).
I'm guessing that most of you have not heard of most of the people I mentioned.... :D

At some colleges, the only reason for a touring act to stop is because of the college. Milwaukee is big enough that if a band wants to play there, they get the Marcus Amp in the summer or Bradley Center in the fall/winter.
I saw plenty of big bands while at MU, but none of them could ever have played MU (would have needed a football stadium for starters) - Van Halen, Rush (twice), Def Lepard (front row - surrounded by hotties that kept disappearing), The Kinks, The Fixx and fresham year Homecoming I was standing in the lobby of the Hyatt when Lindsey Buckingham and the rest of Fleetwood Mac walked in after their concert at the Marcus.

I went to MU from 89-93. I played in the MU based band "Secret Goldfish". A friend from the MU days pointed me to this site. MU has always had great, fun bands. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few but I had a blast listening to and playing shows with several talented musicians from the late 80's and early 90's. Plus the free beer (being a broke college kid) made playing out that much more fun!
Some of my favorites:
1. Big Sky (Peter Mulvey and Joe Panzetta still out there playing today).
2. R. Mutt
3. Surrender Dorothy
4. West Of Everywhere
5. Blue Utah
6. Big Mother Gig
7. Ventriloquist Cat
8. Richards Himself Again
9. Double Take
The cool thing about these bands...most, if not all of them wrote their own songs and put out tapes and CDs. I still enjoy listening to those tracks today.
I saw a few posts regarding Pearl Jam. They played the Varsity Theatre. My buddy and I were local "roadies" for the band. We drove them around town, to music stores and their hotel (they stayed at the Pfister). MU booked Pearl Jam just before the album "10" took off. Pearl Jam was playing venues much larger (and for more money) by the time the rolled into Milwaukee. MU got very lucky...the band almost cancelled the show when they realized the varsity theatre had seats that could not be removed! This was one of the first shows at MU that required an MU ID to get in due to the band's popularity. A very cool moment in MU Concerts. MU always did a great job booking bands and the students did a great job forming bands (not sure where the MU bands play today...there aren't too many bars left in the MU neighborhood that can handle live music) and putting on shows. Most important...the general student population supported their friends which made the whole "Marquette Music Scene" an awesome thing. And Jiggles Fest?...that is a weekend I'd go back to the late 80" for in a heartbeat!

As my Freshman year RA at McCormick said back in the spring of '88, "It's a day of peace, music and 'schrooms." I skipped the 'schrooms part and remember walking over the viaduct to the Domes, but I don't remember the walk back. I do remember some guy who looked like an Indian with an empty bottle of whiskey falling into a bonfire.

Pearl Jam did in fact play a show at ASMU prior to becoming well known. I was in school at the time ('89-'93) but can't remember the year. Of course, me being the dumbass that I am did not attend for some reason or another, although a bunch of my friends did.
My brother is an MU '93 grad and I remember him telling me he went to see them at the ASMU and that it was a hot ticket on campus.

My favorite Jiggles Fest moment was when it was moved to the Eagles Club because of rain, but everyone went down to the Lake anyway. We drained a couple half barrels that afternoon...and then went to the Eagles Club that night. I think that was Spring of 90.

I was a Building Manager at the AMU (along with Chicos) the first 2 years it was open. I remember working a weekend night when there was a concert that we were totally unprepared for. There were hundreds of non-MU people there and it was chaos. People smoking in the lounge areas and dropping their lit butts on the carpeting and, oh yeah, we were so distracted trying to keep the building from burning down and trashed that we left a meeting room on the 3rd floor unlocked after a some group's meeting and a VCR was stolen. I later heard someone say they heard someone was trying to sell it on Wells St. later that night.
I don't know how they kept be from quitting after that night.
As the years past, I kept trying to remember who the band was. My wife thinks it was Pearl Jam, but I guess I couldn't believe a band that ended up so big could have been at the AMU.
I was Assistant Building Manager at Brooks and later the ASMU ('87 - '91). By Junior year they wanted me to be a Building Manager, but I didn't want to work Friday nights (and cut into party time or something stupid like that) and I think it meant more hours/week also and my engineering schedule was busy enough.

Unfortunately, I'll be at the park all day, bossing people around. -- Hah, just remembered a MU/4th of July story. I saw Joe Nethen there about 5 years ago. I looked at him and said, "Hey, aren't you Joe Nethen? We lived at McCormick at the same time.." His first word were something like "hey, I didn't hurt you or nothin, did I? Sorry."
