A New 2009 Name...MU among final two schools

Written by: noreply@blogger.com (bma725)

With the recent commitment of Monterale Clark (http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/39103417.html), the focus for MU fans may have shifted a bit towards the recruiting Class of 2010, but that doesn't mean Buzz Williams and his staff have shifted their focus from the Class of 2009.

We all know the names at this point: Dashonte Riley, Sherrod Wright, Jeremy Adams, Darius Smith, Victor Rudd, Latavious Williams and of course Jamil Wilson.  Now it's time to throw a new name into the mix, because according to The Roanoke Times Marquette is in the final two for Glenn Bryant (http://www.roanoke.com/sports/highschool/wb/193200).

Who is Glenn Bryant (http://wiki.muscoop.com/doku.php/men_s_basketball_recruits/glenn_bryant) and why haven't we heard of him before, you ask?  Good Question.  The shorter answer is, he's an athletic 6'8", 200 lb Combo Forward known mostly for his highlight real dunks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NCeL-DOXpY).   At this point, we know he great leaping ability and is a good rebounder, but the rest of his game  is still a work in progress.  ESPN (http://At%20this%20point,%20his%20game%20is%20still%20a%20bit%20of%20a%20work%20in%20progress.%20%20%20ESPN%20did%20a%20nice%20review%20a%20month%20ago%20that%20basically%20said%20he%20was%20a%20tweener%20that%20needs%20to%20develop%20his%20game,%20but%20he%27s%20got%20great%20athletic%20ability.) did a nice review a month ago,  but there's more to this story than just his leaping ability and shooting stroke.

Bryant is originally from the Detroit area, and through his sophomore year, he wasn't getting much high major love.  Michigan State and Syracuse were showing some interest but hadn't offered him a scholarship.  In an effort to get more exposure and increase his chances of going to a high major program, Bryant transferred to famed Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia.  The move worked, and prior to his senior year he picked up offers from programs like Memphis, Syracuse, Michigan, Arizona and Xavier.  Additionally, according to ESPN (http://insider.espn.go.com/ncb/recruiting/tracker/player?recruitId=54153&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fncb%2frecruiting%2ftracker%2fplayer%3frecruitId%3d54153) he was receiving interest from Kansas, Texas, and North Carolina.

When MU became involved with him is a bit of a guess, but it's an educated one.  Bryant and his Oak Hill teammates were in Milwaukee this past December for the Converse/Eastbay Classic (http://www.milwaukeerecreation.net/cec/index.htm) at the Al McGuire Center, and members of the MU staff were seen in attendance at his game.  It doesn't take a genius to figure out that the recruiting really took off at that time, given that MU is in his final two schools not even two months later.

At this point, we don't know if MU is the leader for Bryant or how close he is to a decision.  What we do know is that Buzz and his staff are still tirelessly recruiting the Class of 2009, and we can say for sure that the rest of the year is going to be interesting both on and off the court.

P.S. Thanks to Cracked Sidewalks for the invite.

Great to see bma75 and John Pudner added to the blog... didn't think it could get any better but I guess I was wrong.

Yeah, we're really psyched that we could add both Pudner and bma, and they both came up with great first posts today.

As time goes on, our real lives interfere with this wonderful hobby, and we started looking around for new writers to beef up the blog.  Pudner had his foot in the door, but bma always impressed us with his knowledge, especially shoring up our recruiting coverage.

Welcome, guys!

Thanks for the welcome, and the part I enjoy the most is READING the recruiting news like this, about which I would know nothing on my own.  The future and the present look great.  GO MARQUETTE!

It is fantastic to have both of those guys on the CS team.

The interest in UAB likely stems from Mike Davis and rumor has it that Davis could land either the Alabama or Georgia job next year.  This could be a Nick Williams like situtation where Bryant could commit to UAB and then follow Davis to Georgia or Alabama if he gets either of those jobs.

Hope Buzz can get him!

anyone else notice that on the Glenn Bryant Wikipedia page it has a heading for "Marquette Career"?  just curious as to why this would be up there if he hasn't decided yet.  unless one of our fans put that in to help sway him.

That's the default for the Wiki.  Every recruits page is created with "Marquette Career"  "Commitment Date"  "Unofficial Visit"  even though most of them will never have anything like that happen.  I could have deleted it when I created his page, but I was in a rush to get the story up so I just left it there.

Couple of things ...

1) Don't get too excited about Bryant ... and

2) His name has been connected with MU for a long time now.

Maybe it's me, but I wasn't really too impressed with the kid.  All the clips showed that he can catch and dunk, which I hope any high D1 talent that's 6'10'' can do.  I'm going to hold off on getting my hopes up until we can see some clips that involve more than just dunking.

If we had 2 players leave this spring, I'd have no problem taking Bryant w/one of the openings --- so then we could still land a guard w/the other scholarship. Another guard is a crying need.

FWIW...I'm not saying MU should take him, my #1 if we are taking another player in 2009 is Darius Smith, and it's not even close IMO.  I'm just that his name is now officially out there and connected with MU.  Outside of a handful of posts on the boards where his name was mentioned is passing, no one has officially put Glenn Bryant with MU.  Not Scout, not Rivals, not ESPN.  This is the first mention that MU is one of his top choices by any sort of media, and it was so low profile that no one noticed it for a week before I posted it.  So he's not exactly on the radar.

A year ago, when we were in the longest big man drought in history, this would have excited me.   Today, looking at the roster and the incoming class it doesn't.   Now, as I read this, all that keeps going through my head is PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY, GET ANOTHER GUARD!!!

He's been discussed for at least a month on the Scout pay board.

He's been discussed for at least a month on the Scout pay board.

I'm not talking about the board, I'm talking about press.  You'll notice that Scout doesn't list him with MU and hasn't done an article on him in over a year.  ESPN doesn't list him with MU despite having watched him play last month.  Rivals doesn't list him with MU despite doing an article on him in December.

The only mention of him on the Premium in weeks occurred yesterday after I posted this article and someone copied the link out of the article into the board.

In fact, if I were just reading the premium board I never would have known we were recruiting him.  I came across this completely by accident when I was updating the Wiki.  I was trying to find information on MU having been involved with Tiny Gallon(Bryant's teammate) in the past, because I thought we were but couldn't find anything.  When I did a google search for "Tiny Gallon Marquette" the article with the Bryant mention popped up.

I'm aware he was discussed, but I only found those posts after going back and looking through the archives of old posts.  There's been a grand total of two threads on the kid in the last month, and they received almost no discussion.  I'm on that board nearly every day, and never even saw them.   The implication here that this is somehow not news because people on the premium board already knew about him and were discussing him for the last several months is an absolute joke.

What do you mean BMA?  For only 9.95 a month you can find out about MU basketball a day before everyone else!  Plus Dodds post more on that site, which is awesome.

No, I agree that it is news on this board that we've been recruiting Bryant...

If I follow your logic, there were two threads on the kid, but you missed them even though you check that board nearly everyday, so that means he wasn't discussed.  Hmmm.

Who said he has been discussed for "several months"?  All I said was that premium Scout had already discussed his recruitment a few weeks back.

Oh Please.  Put up a poll of all Premium Board users and see how many knew we were actually recruiting Bryant.  Put a post on the non-Premium Scout board and see how many people there knew we were recruiting him prior to yesterday.  Heck put a post on the Scout National board and see if Dave and Evan even know we are after him.  There's no need to take a veiled shot at this board just because of your affiliation with Dodds.

The reality is, the fact that we were in his final 2 is news, and not just to this board.  People on the premium board didn't know it either, hence the copying of the article to that board soon after I wrote it.

Didn't say that means he wasn't discussed.  My point was if I missed it, how many other people missed it as well.  He's not been mentioned here, he's not been mentioned on the Scout Free Board, he's not been mentioned in a Scout Article, Rivals Article, ESPN Article or anything from any other recruiting service.  If I had simply posted this news on the Premium board, it would have drawn almost no comment and a lot of people still wouldn't know we are involved with Glenn Bryant.

Actually, the main draw of the $9.95 a month isn't Dodd's posts, or the national stuff.....it's the lure of a Murff free board.  Sometimes everyone needs a break.

If you do a completion match search on "Bryant" on the premium board his name comes up twice in the first three pages, or the 120 most recent topics.  I don't know what constitutes being discussed, and everyone's point of view will differ, but I would posit he has hardly been discussed recently until bma found that article.

Dodds has a lot of nerve charging people to basically share info amongst themselves. IWB no longer contributes and Dodds never provided any inside info. That's quite a racket he's got going on there.

As you said, different strokes for different folks.
But I personally fail to see a significant monetary value in knowing more quickly than some others that a MU is "involved" with a kid.
Which is why I'm no longer a premium subscriber.
That and the fact that too many (and by that I mean "more than zero") number of posts on that board were dedicated to expressing a sense of self-superiority and "insider-ness" over the wretched masses who choose not to subscribe.

Just my two cents.
Which doesn't cost you $89.95 a year.

Alright, I have to apologize because I never meant for this post to turn into another Dodds versus MUScoop thread.  I simply found what I thought was new recruiting info, and shared it with the larger MU Hoops community that doesn't spend time scouring the internet for recruiting info like some of us do.

Before I posted on CS, I made a point of checking the Scout Premium archives to see if a link to this article had been posted in the week since it was written and there was nothing, nor was there any mention of Bryant that I could find in that time period.  Similarly, I checked MUScoop just to make sure that I was not stealing anyone's information.  I could not find a single instance of anyone mentioning Marquette with Glenn Bryant.  It wasn't until well after I posted that someone pointed me in the direction of the month old posts on Premium Board.

Let me make myself clear, I have never, nor will I ever share information I get as a member of the premium board.  To paraphrase the worst ad campaign of all time, what happens on the premium board stays on the premium board.  Additionally, anything else that is subscriber only info is off limits.  That includes, but is not limited to Dodds' interviews, MUHoops staff articles, and anything from the national scout sources.  That's subscriber only info, and while you may not agree with their practices, it's their right to keep that information private.  There are plenty of other sources of recruiting info out there, one doesn't need to steal from Scout to be informed.

My goal with the CS post was the same as it has always been whether I'm posting here, Scout, Rivals or the old Usenet groups more than a decade ago....to stimulate interesting conversation about the team.  If it came across differently, that was my mistake, and it won't happen again.

********

Now that that's out of the way, we can all get back to the real issue, whether or not MU should be looking at another combo forward  in this class(or quite honestly the next one too) given what is already on the roster and what is coming in the future.  Discuss.

Does Buzz ever intend to recruit a guy with a rep as a shooter.  I'm starting to think that this recruiting of height is an over reaction by Buzz to his current roster of small players and what bigs we have that have been injured and haven't shown much.  If my fear is correct this is the same kind of over-reaction by Crean that left us with all guards.  Now I admit that with Big guys you may have to take a few extra because it seems more wash out.  That said it is handy to have a couple guys you can count on to hit the 3 point shot and we are proving go guards trump a team full of forwards.

He is recruiting guys with reps as shooters.  MU is currently involved with Sherrod Wright and Jeremy Adams both of whom got where they are because of shooting.  There's also a ton of guys known as shooters that he's gone after, he just didn't land them.

Wright is the guy who would fill the biggest hole. Outstanding player who would come with great pedigree after spending time in Cimino's Mt. Vernon program. Height, athleticism, IQ, shooter.

IWB recently said that the "ship has sailed" with MU and Wright.

Actually watched Mt. Vernon play the other day (sunday?) on MSG Network.  He looked OK, but announcers said they spoke to Wright and he would rather go to a mid-major where he can play right away and not a major school where he would sit on bench.

he would rather go to a mid-major where he can play right away

I take insult to him calling Marquette a mi-major!  :P

I think we might be able to find a spot on the floor for a shooter next year.

When you say we bowed out for his services.  Did you mean that Mu felt that he was not a great fit for what we are looking for with the last spot or did Mu feel he would not come this far north either way?

Not a great fit, talent wise.

I wouldn't go that far.  We just aren't showing the level of interest that some other schools are and we haven't extended him an offer like other schools.  Doesn't mean we've completely given up on him yet, but other players are a priority.

BMA, in your opinion, what players would that be and the priority order of each?

Believe what you will, but Adams is no longer on Buzz' radar.

What I think it should be and what it is may be different.

I still think that if we are going to oversign for 2009, the guy to get is Darius Smith.  Dashonte Riley would be after that, and IMO it's a fairly wide gap between the two, because Smith fills a need and Riley is a luxury item.  Beyond them, there really isn't anyone I would want, and I would consider banking a scholarship just to have some balance in the classes.

The other guys we are being mentioned with all seem to play positions that we already have a log jam at, and none of them have diversified enogh skills to where the could play along side the guys we have.  Maybe Victor Rudd does, but he has said his leader is UNLV.

Believe what you will, but Adams is no longer on Buzz' radar.

Somebody might want to tell that to Adams and those around him, because they are telling a different story.

The kid and his camp can say what they want, but Buzz won't pull the trigger.
