Golden Eagles Enjoy Record-Setting Summer In Weight Room
Aug. 5, 2008
Under the direction of strength & conditioning coach Todd Smith, the Marquette men's basketball program enjoyed a record-setting Summer in the weight room.
Each of the 14 players on the roster participated in the offseason workouts, which were capped by testing sessions in late July. "This is easily the strongest and fasted team I have ever worked with," Smith said.
"The guys have all worked really hard at staying consistent and I am looking forward to the team's continued development."
Each of the 10 returnees owns a vertical jump of at least 30" and six players can currently bench press 300-or-more pounds. A total of six players can also bench 185 pounds 20-or-more times, an accomplishment only five players could claim at the 2008 NBA Predraft Camp.
Five players also have cleared the 400-pound benchmark in the squat.

I cannot believe DJs squat, no wonder he has cramp issues, just all muscke he is like a rock. Definitely the seniors leading the way in strength according to info that was posted.
the Hummer as an exercise equipment.
I hope they at least pushed it over the tackling dummies.
btw, Wesley benching 320#. wow
Were they listening when marqptm requested they start giving updates on this a week or so ago?

That's exactly what I was thinking...Looks like they're gonna be faster and stronger then ever! I cannot wait for te season to start!!!
41 chinups is a sick amount of chinups
Burke is ripped. His clean improvement can only help his explosiveness, probably the biggest area of need for him.
How motivating is that - I feel so out of shape
I never would've guessed DJ's vert is 36 feet 5 inches :o
But yea, 36.5 inches ain't bad. How bout Randy Moss' 51 inch vert, or 6'5'' 265 DE Jevon Kearse's 40 in. vert, now thats nasty.

I'm pretty pumped to see these guys incorporate a full court press this season; lets hope they're working just as hard on their jumpshots!

I like to think so.
I feel like I'm watching the training sequence in Rocky IV contrasting Rocky using old fashinoned training methods and Ivan Drago using modern technology.
They should have used "Hearts on Fire" as the music in the video.
I hate to bring up the fact that you dont' win games in the weigth room exhibits A & B Tony Manderich and Mike Mamula

That's true, but it sure doesn't hurt to be strong and fast.

Agreed. The endurance that they are building up will pay off against teams with tired legs.
We're gonna eat lightnin'; we're gonna crap thunder.
I couldn't agree more about Manderich and Mamula; however the fact that they were football players (Last I checked we were talking about basketball players) and their liberal use of "steriods" shouldn't take away from what the MU players have done in the gym. We should continue to be one of the fastest and stongest teams on the court, my main point was that their biggest downfall last year was not their conditioning (which was exemplary) it was the fact that they continued to show that they are not good shooters; hopefully they've been working on that.
Lazar and DB both look huge. We could be a very scary team this year.
Liam didn't like running up that hill.
Sheesh, and I got excited when I benched five reps at 185 last week. I got me some work to do!
I thoroughly enjoyed that video as 1) an MU fan watching them prep behind the scenes (kinda like Spring football to the college fb fans) and 2) nice MU propaganda (is it on YouTube yet?).
Some thoughts:
- Burke looks like a mini Dwight Howard. Hope he can be half of DH12 this coming season.
- The incomers looks like they're doing the regimen with a "HOLY SH*T" face!
- Otule looks weird working out
- Glad Frozena's a part of this
- I don't think Jerel's a workout monster, just a playa
- I wonder how Scott Christopherson would've done.
- Forget kicking opponents a la Crean; kick them and leave a hole in their gut.

This looks like my lifetime bests--cumulatively. Thank god my wife makes me take out the garbage. :D These guys looked ripped.
The seniors are primed to show their stuff--on and off the court. Great role models for the newcomers. Otule already looks like he is beefing up. I get the feeling we will be playing end to end this season.
.
One word on Burke - intimidating.
The guy is huge in the way Fasial was huge.
I can't imagine who is going to be able to out muscle any of these guys this year.
While watching this video, I kept asking myself, "Are they training for basketball, or football?"
Some of that stuff was sick what they were doing.

When you consider how big Wesley is, and how fast and agile he is, if hoops don't work out for him he should try and be a TE a la Antonio Gates.
And DJ can play cornerback in the NFL, and Jerel could probably play safety.
MU Football is back! ;D
