It is an absolute travesty that Marquette is tied with NAVY New Mexico State and Utah St. in terms of the Programs Historic Prestige. Again ESPN shows they have no understanding the sport they are covering. Here are some of the schools currently ahead of Marquette.
51. Seton Hall, Big East
52. North Carolina State, ACC
T-53. Miami (Ohio), MAC
T-53. Southern Illinois, Missouri Valley
55. Missouri State, Missouri Valley
56. Valparaiso, Horizon
T-57. Iowa State, Big 12
T-57. Saint Joseph's, Atlantic 10
59. Creighton, Missouri Valley
60. Davidson, Southern
Just shocking for some of them. Its a travesty and anyone who knew Al McGuire and was involved in the creation of this list should be ashamed. Miami? Creighton, Iowa St. How many of those schools of NIT and NCAA titles.
they have this retarded point system, and then they arrange teams as the points they get. Its like they get 25 point for winning NCAA tournament, 20 points for making NCAA Final. 2 points for making NCAA tourney, 2 point for having a player drafted top 10, and stuff like that. Considering MU wasn't very good between 1980's and 2000. I am not surprised we arent ranked higher.
Just another example of ESPN creating something to fill the summer void...it is not as bad as who's now or titletown USA, but right up there
Plus this stupid thing starts from 1985 because that was the year they expanded the field to 64 teams.

did you even read the criteria. the rankings are only based off 1984 and higher. so al mcguire has nothing to do with the ranking...out national championship and success in the 70's is moot. what have we done in that time frame? one final four and a sweet 16. unfortunately, we're at the right spot.
Gotta love College of Charleston at #50 with a total of 1 NCAA win. Apparently dominating the Southern League is a better indicator of prestige then a Final Four, top picks, All-Americans, etc.
Ridiculous criteria. Wisconsin with a 47 year NCAA drought has more prestige because of a 10 year run...that makes total sense.
Yes but its program prestige Yet they award the lower division teams for being good in the southern conference for the past 30 years. The criteria, are skewed, a win against a BCS school shoudl be worth at least twice as much as a win vs. low D-1 schools. The Deane years are lean, but it shouldn't be called program prestige the, it shoudl be call most successful programs. Prestige by its definition has to value the past, and you cannot pick and choose when that starts. That woudl be like saying Rome wasn't that prestigious because they only measured it after the age of the 5 good emperors up until its fall. The arbitrary nature, and the time line make this a bit ridiculous. They ignore factors such as what a program means to its city/state, and how important the program is to the school as a whole. (obviously Georgetown and Marquette's basketball programs need to be more prestigious because football doesn't matter or doesn't' exist) I would be willing to create a table based on the NCAA tournament area (since 1939) that would be more accurate to prestige and give a real look at the scope of a program. Frankly all History matters. That is why this is ridiculous.

MUMOVER, I agree with you...I would like to see your table.
I'll get to work, and most likely have it done by Midnight Madness. I will let people know. I am kind of an excel spreadsheet geek, so believe it or not, I will be having fun creating a spreadsheet and a database, it will be a nice break between managing this warehouse, and figuring out what exactly it means to run a green building and sell records management to people.
I don't think it's that flawed. They had both Princeton and Penn between 31-40. Sounds about right.
Trash...this is total trash. Nothing on ESPN's college basketball page, I can really ever take that seriously. And yeah, this smacks of the "Who's Now?" and "Titletown" crap they've been using as retarded filler all summer.
ESPN sucks. I watch it, but I hate myself for it. There are just so many things to dislike - Berman, East Coast bias, the hyping of everything, Skip Bayless, NFL all the time - I wish there was a decent alternative.
They put out their top 10 today. Guess who number 1 and 2 are - they ram it down our throats all season and then come up with this....

People that get mad at East Coast bias are ridiculous. Its abotu Demographics and History. FACT more people live in East coast cities then anywhere else in the US. FACT most of the early professional sports leagues were based in East Coast Cities. More cities plus more History equals more interest. Get over it and realize that it will take time for certain teams to develop that old feel of great history and for the Sun Belt and West Coast to grow more. The Midwest is in the middle and everywhere but Chicago is falling off, despite the history.
Agreed, MUOVERUWM. Why should anyone care about anything outside the original 13 colonies?

And you would have come up with someone else?
People who are mad at espn.com about this list are rediculous. They came out with a clearly defined fromula and plugged in some numbers. It gave you all something to read and talk about, pretty sure that is the goal of things like this. Espn.com is a huge site with tons of content don't expect to love everything on it.
I agree it is completely rediculous that the somewhat arbitrary year of 1985 is the cut off date.
If you go back as far as you *should* you have to say that UCLA is the hands down number one.

Yes, Duke and you could argue about a lot of other teams (all from other conferences) as the number 2. I was venting more about the Duke-NC hype that we get exposed to than Duke being 1. on their list.
Interesting in how the BE fared...the #1 conference overall, with these rankings...
6. Connecticut
9. Syracuse
10. Georgetown
16. Louisville
19. Cincinnati
31. Villanova
36. St. John's
44. Pittsburgh
51. Seton Hall
T-61. Marquette
67. West Virginia
T-86. Notre Dame
95. DePaul
T-111. Providence
T-225. Rutgers
T-229. South Florida

Fact - The most frustrating part of the East Coast bias is that those in the East Coast pretend it doesn't exist. I understand the demographics, but I also understand that almost everyone on ESPN is from either NY or CT or went to Syracuse. That's a much bigger factor than waiting for new teams to "develop the old feel of great history". Does that phrase even make sense to you? Really?
