Title: 20 points per game player?

I think we have the outside possibility of witnessing this statistical feat in the near future.  There is too much balance this year so I voted Hayward in 09.

Too many scorers on this team to have a player average 20 points a game.  I will say that McNeal will average 18 plus and increase his assists per game by at least 50%.

I don't see Hayward averaging 20 next year either but I do think that Maymon has a chance to do it at some point in his career just not as a freshmen.

I don't see it happening anytime soon.
Heck, only one Big East player (Harangody, 21 ppg) averaged more than 18.6 points per game last year.

I'm with Pakuni - really tough to have individual scorer over 20+, especially with a team as balanced as MU appears to be over next several years. Maymon in 2010 is a possibility but E. Williams perhaps even more so - depends on what Buzz surrounds these two guys with.

Why would we even want a guy scoring 20 a game, unless he is a guy getting a bunch of Offensive rebounds This would mean Marquette isn't as deep as it should be. I'd rather have 5 guys averaging 12-15.

I agree with the desire for a balance scoring attack; however as we saw during the Stanford game... having one guy who can consistently score is critical.  McNeal and Lopez went back-to-back carrying their teams through the OT.  A balanced team is a consistent team, but usually one that lacks a true game changer.

I would like to also see a balanced attack - so the opponents can't stop anyone and shut us down.  but i would also like to see any of our consistent, balanced players be able to jsut go off and make a big run once in a while - also balanced - one time DJ, one time Jerel, one time Hayward, etc.  Keep mixing it up - if we have that potential we will be hard to guard!

I don't know about that one.  Marquette did pretty well with "aircraft carriers" for a few years, and I certainly wouldn't mind another Wade averaging 21pts and taking us to the final four.

I do not see it happening in the next few years, but it sure sounds like McNeal has gotten the attention of his teammates with his consistent good play.  He's never been afraid to shoot, but I think the 20 average will hang on the ability of his teammates to hit open jumpers.  If the players guarding James and Mathews have to stay home...

Why not Hayward in 2009?

Balanced scoring is not always a great thing.  Last time MU had a 20+ scorer per game, I ran down Wells drunk chanting "We Are Marquette" for 15 blocks.

Not going to happen.

Give it another decade or so.

Even the great shooter Novak couldn't accomplish it.

And Wade barely made it with 21.5 ppg.

The kid who'll hit it has to not only be a prolific scorer, but consistently go to the line and hit his FTs.

I think it could happen if the hype is real around McNeal.  All he needs is better percentages (FG, 3, FT).  None of them were outstanding last year, 45%, 30%, 70% respectively.  I think 45% would be good if he was mainly a 3 point shooter.  He gets too many layups for the percentage to be that low.
