Title: Do we really need a point guard??
Post by: yellow chickens on June 30, 2008, 12:07:29 PM
Personally I have more concerns over buycks/butler playing the 2 and mcmorrow/otule playing the 5 than I do about cubi/acker/possibly buycks playing the one.

I would rather try to get a quality big man or a really good shooting guard for 09, then worry about a point in '10.

Problem is, Cubillan is not a true PG and neither is Buycks.  Acker is, but unfortunately he's 5'7 and you can't expect him to be able to compete in the Big East at that size.  We've seen what happens when an offense doesn't have a talented true PG that can run the show night in and night out.  You can make up for a weakness at SG or Center, you can't win with a weakness at PG.

Besides, it isn't just Buycks and Butler at SG.  Erik Williams will spend time there as well, and depending on the situation you could say Hayward and Maymon there also.

i do think buzz will take best available, first come, first served, with his last remaining 09 schollie.  what i mean is, he probably has a list of about 10 guys, including gaddy, cadougan, dixon, lawrence, jennings, parrom, kemp, of which if any one of them came up tomorrow and said "I'm in" , Buzz would take them immediately and then start recruiting in 2010 for whatever our needs were.  i feel like, especially with the types of players he is recruiting, he wants an interchangeable-parts type of team.  maybe a true point is not completely necessary in his "winning offense".  he may very well be happy with a pg rotation of cubi/acker/buycks/butler.  One thing I have realized is that Buzz is a little unpredictable, especially since the Buycks and McMorrow signings both came out of left field.  Personally, I think a true point should be the top priority with our last remaining 09 spot.

Buzz is unpredictable why?  becuase Scout or rivals or you did not know we were recruitng certain guys?   WOW I guess that makes him unpredicatble...did you know Crean was recruitng half the guys he signed!!??

Please,  i am certain Buzz was recruitng a batch of 2g's and Buycks was the first to commit.  Same with 5's and McMorrow.  And it will be the same at the PG.

2010 priorities will then be a 2g and a forward and possibly anything from a 2 to a 4 with the 3rd schollie.

We need another point guard like Ziggy needs another hemorroid.

i didn't mean unpredicatable as a negative.  and yes, the actual definition of unpredictable means that you can't predict what is going to happen.  if we didn't know Buzz was recruiting these guys, then that makes both signings UNPREDICTABLE BY DEFINITION.  explain to me how the actual signings of Mcmorrow and buycks were predictable?  I don;t mean the positions, i mean the players.  Both of those players/signings literally came out of nowhere.  and for what it's worth, I actually LIKE both of the signings.  and why did you drag crean into this, this discussion has nothing to do with him?  all i was trying to say, is that while we all may think PG is the next position to be filled, maybe buzz is happy with his PG rotation and will take another big, or another 2g that can handle.

Yes, we do.

This is a dumb thread.  If we could pick up a 5 star center or 5 star PG, I would pick up the center.  But guess what, we won't be in the running for a 5 star center or a 4 star.  James is a great PG for college play and there will be a serious void after next season.  After our trio leaves, there are no players on our team (unless these JuCo's work out) that can split the double team.

Basically, we need a talented PG bad.  End of story.

PG is #1 position in ball. We need a good one and we need him ASAP.

Having Acker/Buycks/Cubillan means that we don't need a PG to play 30 mpg as a freshman.  We still need a point guard.  Maybe just for 20-25 minutes, but the minutes and a starting spot are there for the taking if the kid is good enough.

Yep, we need a point guard. Buzz may have brought Buycks in to play point - we really don't know (or perhpas we will if he fills his last scholarship with 2G) - but that would leave us with no one in the soph or frosh class to provide depth. Cubillan is not part of the conversation - he's not a point guard; Acker will provide experience and depth in 2009 but I don't seem him playing ahead of Buycks and he's in his last year.

Need one.....

PG #1 priority. Period.  Almost every BE team has a 4 star rated PG at a minimum, many if not a majority have a 5 star.  Acker is a 2 star, love the kid as I love Cubi but we would get absolutely abused.

Yes.  We NEED a true, great pg.  When we get one, and if the bigs develop a little, we could be a very competitive team.  But the lasst scholie has to go to a great pg.

Plus, a great/good PG can make a below average/average center look much better.  PG should be the priority.

In short,

Yes.

In long,

yes...we need a f-ing PG, badly for 2009.

The answer really depends on how good McMorrow is. If he is good enough to start and play strong inside defense, we could get away with starting Acker. Otherwise Acker could be abused defensively. Culliban is a good ball handler, but not a passer. While Aker can pass there were times last year where he threw a lazy pass accross court, which led to steals by the other team.

I still have two years eligibility in the United States. Maybe I give Buzz a call.

please do not pick up the phone!!!   If anyone wants to remind themselves of why we need a top quality PG just rewind to Niv and Bell bringign the ball up the court, or marcus jackson having to bring the ball up.  Serious question...in the few times the ball was placed in Berkowitz's hands did he actually ever get the ball over mid court without turning it over?  i have never ever seen a player so overmatched in 30 years of watching D1 ball.
I f Crean does not land dominic james or another top flight PG we would not have had the run we had the last 3 years... other targets such as Walton or Frasor would not have gotten us to the dance as Frehsman.  a top flight Pg is critical.

Actually, in the Lousville blowout, Niv was the only one to get the ball past midcourt. He really was not that bad.  Simply had no time in the system due to the timing of his arrival.

I agree with that.

Not sure the kid was a high D1 talent... but he's got some decent background that suggests he could've been a contributor if he has stuck with it.

i guess time softens the memory for you.  in quite actuality the word quickly got out on niv ..........man backcourt pressure and he cannot beat it.  Travels, balls bounced off the foot etc.  it was brutal to say he was not that bad is amazing...he made the likes of candelino and aamot look like all stars and i say seriously.  he simply was a DIII or NAIA player at the very best and not only was he seriously devoid of D1 skills but had HS varisty athleticism at best.  Not trying to pick on the kid, Mu were the ones to offer the kid  but there were at least 20 intramural kids that could have done a better job than Niv.  He was worse than the walkons.

looked up his stats he avergaed a turnover every 5 minutes or 8 a agme and shot 16%!!! for his career, that thankfully ended quickly.   do you think he would have bolted in the dead of night if he were not so inept?
