many programs will "offer" a player with whom they have virtually no chance of commitment, just so they can say that they are involved with that player?
Obviously, that may enhance the program's rep, but it also may distort the picture of how their recruiting is going.
Although it seems like Buzz and his staff are everywhere, and it has been alluded to that he is recruiting the socks off of Crean, might it not be that he is doing about the same as Crean and about the same as most majors? Or, do we see a real difference?
Correct, many programs will offer a player, even if they are a longshot to commit to that program.
But with Buzz over the last few weeks, it's not his offers are that are amazing, it's the kids who are saying Marquette is now in their top 5 school choices. I'm just amazed at how quickly Buzz has been working to boost the program from where it is. Reminds me a bit of when KO first came on the seen at MU. KO was everywhere and was getting recruits that previously MU had no shot.
I think Crean's biggest weakness at recruiting was never leaving a scholarship unused. Most of his late signees either transferred out or were not effective players. So far Buzz still has a scholarship open for 2008. It sounds like he is looking at a couple of players for 2008. If he actually signs a player that helps next year or leaves it open until next year he is ahead of Crean. If he uses it basically on a practice player, then I think it shows a lack of confidence by him in his recruiting ability. Now if he uses the 2008 scholarship, we will not know until March whether it was used wisely.
I don't think he will use it on a practice player in terms of quality. If it is a PG, it will be good to have a year under his belt for the 2009 season. I don't think we will know the impact until then.

Out of curiosity, what's the list of kids that have been specifically quoted as having Marquette in their top five options?
