Unfortunately, allegiances die hard.
Overheard:
Wade, commenting on Tom Crean, his former coach at Marquette, taking over at Indiana University:
"I'm always going to be a Golden Eagle, and I'm always going to support coach Crean. He was very big in my life. He is a friend and a mentor. I love Marquette and people are proud of him. I feel the same sense of pride."

As it should be. The guy went to MU because of Crean, he should have strong ties to him the rest of his life.
For all the Crean haters...without Crean, Mr. Wade isn't on your wall or your kid isn't wearing his jersey or you can't bring him up in your arguments with your pals or when they show the Final Four of 2003 no need to watch because he wouldn't be there.
gee thanks for setting everyone staright with your shocking revelations chicos.

After reading your ridiculous thread yesterday (sorry, I was out a few days on vacation prior) and the responses about whether Wade was going to MU without Crean, it needed to be stated.
Some of the Crean Derangement Syndrome (CDS) here should be submitted for clinical review.
Bottom line is that Wade and Crean are part of MU history. Can't have one without the other. And, of course, they can certainly still be friends. We may not like how TC left, but the 9 years don't just go by the wayside.
In the summer of 1977, do you think they was this much hatred for Al for the way he announced he was leaving MU?

You can't begin to compare. He announced his retirement in December of 1976, to take effect at the end of the season, not a departure to another coaching position. And, in fact, many were very upset with him for his timing, and the number of loses he racked up early in that season.

You should ask the question about the year prior when he wanted out of his contract to coach the Bucks and MU told him they wouldn't release him from his contract.
Edit: 1968
Al never snuck off under cover of night without telling either his men or his bosses.

But BOY did he sweeten and close that deal!

He had some losses late in the season as well. There are more then a few folks out there that believe MU should not have been invited but since it was Al's last year they gave him the nod. That has been insinuated by more then a few commentators over the years. Whether it's true or not, we'll probably never know.

Al wanted to leave for the Bucks when they first came into the league, not in 1976. MU refused to let him out of his contract.

Yup...1976 was when he announced his retirement (December 17 at the Wisconsin Club...sorry...my brain was still on that posting AnotherMU84)
1968 is when he was offered the Bucks job.
