Post by: Wareagle on May 27, 2008, 02:25:14 PM
If you want to see Jamil Wilson, Johnnie Lacy, and a host of other really good talent, the NY2LA tournament is being held at the AL this weekend.

Just got off the phone with the organizers.  It is open to the public.  The cost on Friday is $5, Saturday is $10, and Sunday is $5.  Wilson's and Lacy's team is the Playground Elite.  They play at 9:30 PM on Friday at the AL and 11:30am at the AL on Saturday.  The rest of the games thru Sunday are the playoffs, so there's not telling when or who they will play after their first two pool games.

RE-EDIT - to reflect Flavien Davis' transfer back to the Wisconsin Scholars.

I compiled a list of who to watch at the AL this Friday.  There are at least six players currently being recruited by Marquette who will play Friday night.  I have it broken down by starting time.  The last numbers are their overall Rivals ranking, followed by their position ranking.  Marquis Mason's team plays Flavien Davis' team, and they both project to play the 2/3, so you may get to see them guard each other.  The one potential conflict would be choosing between seeing Colvin play vs. Lacy and Wilson (but this may be moot if they have the courts aligned right next to each other).

Kyle Kelm          2010    SF/PF  Wisconsin Swing (Selk)  7:10  Court 1
Marquis Mason   2010   SF   Badger Sporting Goods   8:20  (Ct. 2)
Flavien Davis     2010     SF     Wisconsin Scholars       8:20   (Ct. 2)

If anyone is going to the tourney, would you be interested in video taping some of the potential recruits and putting them up on you tube (maybe add those clips to the wiki as well)?

* I assume it is ok to video tape these guys, if any one knows of a rule against it please speak up.

Thanks Mark, that is awesome.  I want to see Mason and Davis go toe to toe.

This was the first time I've seen an AAU tournament, but I didn't think that either Lacy or Wilson played well at all in their first game.  I'm not trying to make any larger comments about their skills, but yesterday was very poor.  On the other court MU recruit Chris Colvin did look good and really fast.

Lacy certainly looked to be a shoot first player, whereas Wilson just seemed out of sorts.

That's just how Wilson generally seems.  A lot of the time it's like he's not even paying attention.  All the talent in the world, but it doesn't always come through.

Analysis -
Kyle Kelm - The team Kelm was supposed to play never showed up, so his team won by forfeit.  He seemed to have a decent stroke from 3 while warming up, but its really difficult to get much insight from a warm-up session.

Flavien Davis - This kid can play.  He showed a very high basketball IQ and would've had at least two more assists if his teammates were ready for his passes.  He's comfortable handling the ball and his play is very fluid around the basket.  He was almost too unselfish in this game, as he probably could have taken his man off the dribble more than he did.  Mason and Davis matched up some against each other occasionally.  The one thing I drew from it is that Flavien Davis looked like a basketball player who is also a good athlete.  Marquis Mason appeared to be a more unfinished product, like a naturally good athlete who happens to play basketball.

Marquis Mason - As others have said before, he has big time athleticism but needs more polish to be a real good basketball player.  He has a very solid build, and can get out and run, but in the Friday's game Davis' superior ability to just play the game definitely stood out.  He had a much better second half than first half.   As a side note, both players would have had more boards, but the refs called more lane violations than I had ever seen before in my life.

Jamil Wilson - As others said, he just didn't seem all there.  The other thing I noted is that his post up game needs a lot of work.  He doesn't appear to have the strength yet to back down other 6'6 plus players, and  it forces him to resort to a fade away as opposed to going strong to the hoop.  You can tell he has major athleticism, but he just didn't seem to focus very well in this game.

Johnnie Lacy - Lacy was really hot this game.  He was very good at penetrating in half court sets and in the open court, but when he saw daylight, he was focused on shooting first and passing third.  There were several instances where he attempted a contested layup when he could've passed to teammates with an easier look.  When he did pass the ball, the pass didn't really seem to aid the flow of the offense.

I know this may seem like a weird assessment for a guy who went 9-14, but you just had to be there.  At least five of the shots he made were not really high percentage shots.  That said, if a college team needs points in buckets, Lacy can bring them.  I just don't know how good of a fit he would be at MUgiven our teams makeup in two years.

I wasn't positive he was on Chicago express, but my girlfriend was with me and said she recognized him from his rivals picture.  I didn't watch that game too carefully.  I can tell you is that the team gets up and down very quickly in transition, and if colvin is indeed triggering the break on that team he is doing it well.
