[excerpt]
Despite the recent tumult involving head coach Lute Olson, who took a leave of absence last season, Pastner said he wasn't actively looking to leave Arizona. He had turned down opportunities within the past year to join the Kentucky and Marquette coaching staffs.
But when he got a call from Calipari to gauge his interest in the job at Memphis, the opportunity to work under and learn from another elite coach immediately intrigued him.
"I'm just the type of guy, nose to the grindstone, getting after it," Pastner said. "You get so focused on your work, you don't even think about other opportunities. When he called, I got that little butterfly feeling and was like, this is pretty darn cool. I had a good feeling right away. (Calipari) makes you feel so comfortable; you're ready to go through a wall for him. That's why he's had the success wherever he's been."
So do you think he got that same butterfly feeling in his stomach when Buzz called? Or was it just gas?

Buzz and Pastner are reportedly good friends. Calipari is a cheater.
Interesting choice.
Life is about timing. It sounds like Pastner was not ready to leave Arizona a month ago when Buzz offered. He was waiting to see what Lute was going to do. Then when he was ready, Buzz already filled out his staff.

In the excerpt you provided, it explicitly is written that Pastner turned down an opportunity at MU.
I don't think it had anything to do with "when he was ready, Buzz already filled out his staff". More likely, he was ready but just not for Marquette.

I doubt it. I am pretty sure Josh turned Buzz down.

Yes he did because at the time he wasn't ready to leave Az. He was still waiting to see what Lute would do. Then he decided to leave and Memphis was their with an opening. If Buzz had an opening right now, would he still turn him down?

yes
Easy to say that now as he turned it down and went to Memphis.
But if their was no way he was going to take the job, he should have never taken the trip to MU in early April to discuss it with Buzz. I'll interpret his trip to MU as their was serious interest in the job. So, it wasn't as an emphatic a no as you think. An emphatic no is all the guys that don't bother to make the trip to interview in the first place.
How about this. After he saw MU he decided he didn't want it.
how about this; he flew to Milwaukee out of respect for his friend, Buzz, to listen to his offer, THEN turned it down.

Who said it was an emphatic no?
Example - I've let companies fly me to their location for an interview, gotten a job offer, and turned it down. Clearly it wasn't my dream job, but I was interested enough to go talk to them in person. However, when the offer came, I decided it wasn't the job for me.
Maybe he got to Milwaukee in early April and realized its still freakin' cold.
As improbable as it seems, maybe he thought working under John Calipari at an elite program was better than working under Buzz Williams at a not-quite elite program.
Crazy, huh?
This is not so much a reflection on Buzz as it is on Calipari and Memphis. Anyone who believes Pastner would be on his way to Milwaukee instead of Memphis right now if only MU had landed Chris Lowery or Brad Brownell is a dope.
Though mere mention of the name Brad Brownell gives me butterflies.

Congratulations on figuring it out!! Of course a highly regarded assistant isn't going to come to work for Buzz Williams. What do you think the point of the discussion has been all along?
How soon before you figure out that some posters wanted a highly regarded HEAD COACH because recruits are going to steer clear of Williams for the same reason that Pastner did.

You mean the way top 50 recruit Erik Williams is steering clear of Buzz Williams?
Do people even think before they type?
But since you seem to be on close terms with Mr. Pastner, please inform the rest of us about why he "steered clear" of Williams.
And what coach could MU have hired that would have him believing Milwaukee was a more attractive option than Calipari and Memphis.
I eagerly await your response.
I read somewhere that Pastner did not want to work for Buzz since they are good friends and did not want to jeopordize that. ( Working for friends or relatives can be a real recipe for disaster. )
You can't compare the jobs. Calipari is one NCAA investigation away from probation at a school that has no pressure to maintain academic standards. Pastner can wait for Calipari to get caught, then be in line to assume the top job.

Marquette is one investigation away from probation too. Everyone bags on Cal but he has not had one issue yet at Memphis.

You COULD be right... but you are jumping the gun.
If Buzz lands a couple of top guys are you going to post how you were wrong about him not being able to get top guys?
Probably not.
If Calapari was dirty he would have been stung already. He is under a microscope and all indications are he is just a great recruiter, not a cheat. His resume is frickin strong. He, Pitino and Huggins have no reason to cheat.
These three guys the NCAA would love to nab, but they can't because they are clean. I would bet probably cleaner than they need to be.

You know Cincinnati was put on two years probation under Huggins in the late 90s for numerous violations, right?

And that Huggins didn't graduate a player from Cinnci in something like 8 years...not one player. Its not about recruiting violations for Huggins or Calipari....its about academic performance and by all accounts both Huggins and Calipari flirt with disaster every year given the players they bring in. Rumors of academic shadiness have been around Calipari since his days at UMass.
The NCAA would love to nail these guys. No argument on academic standards, but how many other schools lower those standards? know I am in the minority but I couldn't care less on graduation rates. Twelve kids impact thousands of kids in a positive way and that means more to me than graduation rates.
maybe, Gymbar, but when you don't graduate ANY of the 12 there's a problem. Calipari will get caught at Memphis, just as he was about to gewt caught at UMass. He's a sleazebag and he's far from clean.
