Title: To bank, or not to bank...
Post by: downtown85 on April 27, 2008, 07:36:03 AM
...that is the question.

My question is whether we go after a player like Morrow or bank the scholly for next year.  Also related to that is who do we go after in 2009?

The way I see it our 2009 roster will appear as follows assuming no transfers and we bank the scholly (i.e., 4 open scholarships for 09):

C-  Otule
PF- Mbakwe., Hazel.
SF- Fulce, Williams, Hayward
SG- Butler
PG- Mo, Cubie

Well, I have to say I have been one of the critics calling for more big men to be recruited, but it is clear we need a couple of top notch guards for 09.  That should be our top priority.  Wilson would be a great get but we shouldn't reserve a scholly on the off chance he chooses MU.  I would say Maurice Creek and Johnny Lacy should be our top priorities.  This is especially true since T. Taylor is not likely to choose us anymore.

Any thoughts?

If Morrow is willing, take him.  We have 4 schollies for 09.  EWilliams is 1.   3 left.   Assuming Wilson (pleasepleasepleaseplease) grab the best two guards available.    6'9" 250 lb bigs don't show interest in us that often.   Grab him and worrry about guards later.

If Marrow is better than OTule, we have to take him.  There are no guarantees that Buzz will get better recruits next year than Marrow. Also Marrow will have a year of experience on anyone we recruit next year

I'm on board with picking up the "big".  Banking a scholarship seems like somewhat of a gamble.  After all, Mbakwe hasn't fully tested his knee IMHO, what if (God forbid) he is reinjured or maybe one of the other bigs goes down.  Let's get the big man if we can.

If Morrow can develop into a Robert Jackson level player I say go for it.  Sign him.

We do need size.  So, I say go for Morrow and get Gs for 2009 as Gs can contribute sp much faster than bigs. Now, if there was a quality transfer on the horizon; I would hold the scholie; but, I have not seen any good "names" transferring yet...?
