Is this guy ethical since he took two recruits with him to Howard?

Sounds like he poached them.   ;)

"Collins helped sign two preseason MEAC Player of the Year candidates in Aki Thomas (2002) and Kyle Williams (2003), both of whom transferred to Howard from the University of Colorado, following Collins when he made the trip back East. He also helped recruit 2003 MEAC Player of the Year, Ronnie Williams.

Prior to Howard, Collins spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Colorado, one year as a volunteer and two as a full-time assistant. His responsibilities with the Buffalos included coordinating film exchange, and participating in on-campus recruiting activities. He coached Jaquay Walls while in Boulder, who went on to become a second-round NBA draft pick by the Indiana Pacers in 2000."

Well, of course they would follow him.  One is named "Aki" and the other 2 are Williams.

Even when you consider that this resume is clearly beefed up: "helped sign," "helped recruit," "participating in on-campus recruiting activities" (which I assume entailed giving campus tours), it appears the candidates for assistant coaching positions were not exactly stellar.

Phew...that's a relief....I was afraid he took two signed players with him to another college and it would break out into a morality discussion.

I like that the middle man between Williams and Collins was Billy Gillespie. That's the same guy that had Buzz and Jerrance Howard on his A&M and Kentucky staffs, respectively. Hopefully Gillespie is working the Howard angle too!

First, a "big man" assistant with midwest ties. Now, an East Coast assistant with NY ties:

"I think it's important we have a presence where we play," Williams said. "I think any coach will tell you that it's important to be able to recruit where you play. Obviously, Aki's from New York, went to high school in New York, has great relationships up and down the East Coast, and he will be able to help us continue to recruit where we play. He has great relationships with coaches in the East and in the Mid-Atlantic area. We've got to recruit here first, recruit our own state and then expand from there, but I think you've got to recruit in the Big East region and collectively we will do that as a staff, but Aki will be able to guide us in the right way in that regard."

I like the hires so far - from a recruiting POV.

Now, we need a solid X's and O's guy.

Boylan? Dream hire right now.

Was Kevin O'Neill ethical when he brought Ron Curry from Arizona?

Was Bo Ryan ethical when he brought Clayton Hanson to Madison?

There are many, many examples of this. These happen in college basketball.

Exactly Pakuni...exactly.  That has been my point the last two days.  Relationships are with coaches, not basketball programs.  We totally agree

How's Aki's relationship with Hurley at St. Anthony's?

I like it.  Two coaches of color.  About a week ago I suggested on this board that Buzz should try to hire a couple black assistants.  I was widely criticised.  Now its happened.  I think it will play positively in recruiting and team chemistry.  We'll see.

You know what I like about Buzz, Benford and Collins?  They believe in a national championship at Marquette.

Getting Marquette back into NY is the key.

Oops. My bad. I wrongly assumed you were in "Question Buzz mode" and not "Defend Crean" mode.  ;)

I don't think I've been in question Buzz mode yet, but certainly question Cottingham / Wild mode.   ;)

Why do we have to be in modes? Can't we all just be MU fans and not swallow everything and say it tastes good?

Perhaps the  ;) needs to be made larger so that you could see and/or understand I was joking with my old pal Chico's.

I think you give DS credit for more clout than exists, and attribute decisions to him that he probably had little to do with.  Certainly, he is not alone as a 'major' contributor, and the consortium of same exerting pressure on bball program may rule, not the individual.
