Title: Scott Monarch, Asst. Coach
Post by: 4thAndState on April 18, 2008, 01:15:03 PM
Arroding to a Tyler Junior College Athletic Dept. release:

Butler and Thomas Sign Scholarships
Posted by Tim Drain - Fri, Apr 18, 2008 at 8:13 AM - [ Men's Basketball ]
Head coach Tom Crean's departure from the Marquette basketball team two weeks ago caused a ripple effect at Tyler Junior College that didn't calm down until Thursday.

That's when TJC freshman Jimmy Butler announced that he was signing with the Big East program, joining two other Apaches who are also headed to Marquette.

Joseph Fulce signed in November, and TJC assistant coach Scott Monarch will be joining the Golden Eagles staff under new head coach Buzz Williams. The two coaches were together one season at the University of New Orleans (2006-07).

Does anyone know anything about Monarch?  Is he an Xs and Os guy?  What type of offense and defense does he run?  I heard he ran stictly zone at Tyler.

Also, how would this affect the Josh Pastner situation?

ok, I"m missing something...  ?-(

why do we want an assistant coach from a junior college as an assistant to BE member Marquette?
just to keep Butler and Fulce in the fold?

what is it about this guy to unofficially have him named as the number 1 a.c. hire by buzz?

someone- illuminate me.

I think he definately won't be the top AC, just that he was the first hired because he's got the longest relationship with Buzz.

By number one assistant coach, I assume you mean chronologically, and not that he'll be Buzz's top assistant.

Anyhow, Monarch has a long-standing relationship with Williams dating back to the early 90s at Navarro College, where they both worked as assistants (though perhaps not at the same time). I suspect Buzz wanted at least one person on his staff with whom he had a prior relationship and comfort level, not unlike Tom Crean bringing in Darrin Horn and Dwayne Stephens.

Anyhow, as long as Buzz doesn't pack his staff entirely with his Texas pals, I don't see anything wrong with bringing aboard a guy or two with whom he's worked previously.

If Pastner is indeed hired, I would be surprised if he is not the top Assistant Coach, unless he's got another rabbit coming out of his sleeve.

One thing is for sure, we have a young staff from the HC all the way down.

As long as they win, they can hire Jeffery Dahlmer and John Wayne Gacy as assistants for all I care.

Rotting corpses of serial killers on the bench?
That definitely will not help recruiting.

Interesting note off of Monarch's bio:

Alma Mater: Mississippi Valley State
Prior coaching stops: Grambling State, Tennessee State

I'm definitely not trying to say anything controversial here, just found it interesting to see a white guy born in Kentucky spending his formative years at historically black colleges. Maybe it's not unusual at all, though.

It's no given Monarch is coming in as an assistant.  He might be coming in as a DBO.

Good point, Vike. The article just states that he is joining the staff, not that he is an assistant coach.

I'm only speculating -- but I doubt that.  I think Buzz wants him to help with recruiting.

Well, that's the scuttlebutt at this point (Monarch as DBO), but it's possible he will be an assistant.  I'm just saying that don't take it as a given that he's an assistant, because there are rumors to the contrary.

I think Monarch was Buzz's top assistant at New Orleans, so I doubt he's coming in as DBO.
