...after tonight, Marquette will officially outdraw the Bucks on average over the course of their respective 2007-2008 seasons.
Marquette averaged 16,239 per game, the Bucks averaged 15,571 entering tonight.
Not bad for what some like to call a "mid-major" program.
(And if some people want to argue about actual butts in the seats, turn on the Bucks-Bulls game right now if you're in Chicago or MKE. There may be 11,000 people in the building at the most right now).
That is definitely something to be proud of. I'd put the support of Marquette fans over the years (good and bad) up against any program in the country! Absolutely, positive no beef with Marquette fans. We are among the most passionate in the country.
Of course, certain things make you wonder if that commitment is taken for granted. I believe it is!
Keep in mind, MU tix cost waaaaay less than Buck tix.
Also, people want to see winning teams regardless of what level of play it is.

So do Georgetown tickets:
2006-07: Verizon Center (20,500 capacity) vs. 10,441 avg for GU (no sell-outs for a F4 team in the BE, 41st in the US)
Compared to 17,122 for the Wizards in 2006

Woah, there so much to do in DC. Like the Jefferson Memorial or the Smithsonian! Not a fair comparison!

Wow. Yes there is more to do in DC, but I can't believe they only draw 10,400 especially when there apparently is a basketball crowd in the area. Good for us.

Then why do the Wizards draw 17,000? That's 6,000+ more than the Hoyas. The comparison is still valid. The Bucks and MU are drawing from the same fan pool and so are GTown and the Wiz. We're not comparing GTown to MU or Bucks to Wiz. Those may be unfair comparisons.

Give me a break. Do you really think they're going after the same demographic.
Basketball attendance has nothing to do with the presence of museums.

Thank you for clarifying. I almost had a stroke.
On a side note, I hope people on this board have been watching "John Adams" on HBO. I think it's one of the best things I've ever watched on television. That guy playing Jefferson is great and don't get me started on Washington...he's spot on!

The great David Morse. Possibly the best character actor alive. Deserved at least an Oscar nomination for
The Crossing Guard.

OK you are comparing the Jefferson Memorial to College BBall. Do DC people go the the Jeffeson Memorial 20 times a year year after year. Huh????

And on why the Wizards draw more? They're WAAAY better than the Bucks and a better PROFESSIONAL venue for those consultants to entertain their clients [insert high-priced escort joke here].
"And on why the Wizards draw more? They're WAAAY better than the Bucks and a better PROFESSIONAL venue for those consultants to entertain their clients [insert high-priced escort joke here]."
THE COMPARISON ISN'T BETWEEN THE BUCKS AND WIZARDS!
Seriously, sometimes I think I am taking crazy pills here. The point is MU outdraws the Bucks. The Wizards outdraw the Hoyas considerably. Wizards better than Bucks and GTown better than MU. Impressive that MU can out draw an NBA franchise. Let's leave it at that.
BTW, can people, for once, not pretend to be experts on everything. None of us have a f***ing clue about the Wiz/Hoya fanbase. These are all educated guesses.
We do have a clue about population, though: museum-visiting tourists aside, 4.8 million people live in the DC metro area. 1.5 million live in Milwaukee's metro area.
We should be proud of our city's support of this team. Clearly, Marquette has done something right to average this type of attendance.
First, I was born and raised in DC here are the reasons for some that Georgetown doesn't draw as well. T
1) Georgetown isn't nearly as large of a School as MArquette is so they have to rely on more non-alumni.
2) There are multiple D-1 programs in the Washington Area including Maryland, George Mason, American, and George Washington. Marquette's only competition as a D-1 basketball is form UWM nuff said.
3) I likves there my entire life and never once went to the Jefferson Memorial
4) DC is not as college sports crazy as the State of Wisconsin. It is a Redskins town first, then people look to basketball and the exciting wizards filled the void
5) DC is jsut not that great of a sports town besdies the Redskins. The City goes into SPort Hibernation at the end of Football season. When I was growing up there Lez Boullez where there and were completely unwatchable. The Caps were good but its Maryland and Virginia and its Hockey.
Milwaukee and DC cannot be compared becasue of those reasons. Milwaukee has better sports fans on the whole then Washington. DC's major sports is polictical jargon.
I'll add that a huge number of Wiz tickets are purchase by local business/lobbies/associations/etc... thus the attendance numbers are largely inflated by these groups that may or may not show up for the games.

Georgetown has a total enrollment of 14,148 with 6,853 undergrad.
Marquette has a total enrollment of 11,305 with 7,718 undergrad.
I give up. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
My two cents on why the wiz outdraw Gtown (although 10K attendance per game is nothing to sneeze at):
1. Gilbert Arenas, Caron Butler, Antawn Jamison. Unlike the garbage-gutter roster (Redd the exception) the Bucks have, they're WORTH watching.
2. Also, MCI is a little bit more of a trip from the Gtown campus. The Metro doesn't run all the way out there, so it is a little bit of a trek to get into the city for the students.

They could hike across the key bridge or catch a bus to foggy bottom. I think they are just crapty fans. Also, Redd needs to go.
The last two bucks games I went to were as a result of free tickets, given away by the Bucks organization. Twice before that, I went via a half price promotion. So, I paid $48.00 for the last four Bucks games I went to. I paid $120.00 for the last four MU games.
