Title: Fair expectations
Post by: THEGYMBAR on April 12, 2008, 11:28:26 AM
The hire is going to prove to be good or bad over the next the twelve months. We all can agree to disagree on who, what or why things are going bad or now.

But, I would love to hear everyone's expectations for the next 3-5 years. I would be satisfied if MU remained a top 25 program with a chance of elite 8 or final four every 4-5 years. I think anything less would be very disappointing. In my opinion, anything above that is a bonus.

"Elite 8 or Final Four every 4-5 years. Anything above that is a bonus." I guess you do not set the bar to high.

79Warriors---I said to have a chance at that level. I believe we did this year and will again next year. I am not saying we need to make that level, but when season starts we believe it is a chance if all goes well.

If that has too high of a bar I do not think we can consider ourselves a Top 25 program

My "fair" expectations as of now:

- Postseason every year. NCAA desired, but with possibly a young and inexperienced team a year or two down the road, I'll be happy with a deep run in the NIT.

- If in the NCAAs, getting out of the first round each time we're there.

- Finishing in the top 25 each year.

NCAA next year is a must with who is coming back

Beyond that, I'd like to continue what we've done the last 7 years....5 NCAA tournament appearances, 2 NITs.  What we do in those tournaments is crap shoot so I don't put any expectations in terms of deep runs or early exits, depends who you play.  Just get there and see what happens.

If continuity is who we hired, then that kind of continuity would be terrific.

^^^And that IS fair.

I think to attract new talent we need to remain a Top 25 team.  There should be no reason we go backwards.  We need to build on tradition, and move forward.  If we want to be considered a place to coach, a place to play, we need to let the basketball world know we are serious, and we will do what it takes to get us there.

And really, for the university in total, it is great.  Basketball brings in lots of money, lots of new students and lots of exposure.  We need it.

Win more games and go farther in the post season than Indiana.

Next year - top 25 program.  Hard to say after that - depends on Buzz's recruiting prowess and coaching ability.  Expect mid to low finish in BE as Buzz gets his acclimated to his new responsibility for 1-2 years.  Who knows after that - either back to top 25 or Buzz will be gone.

If we go backwards the uphill battle gets tougher. To start from scratch in CUSA is far cry from starting at scratch in BE. There really is little to wiggle room for long term success. If you look at the lower end BE teams they have been there for a couple of years or longer.

MU/Buzz need to stay at same level at the minimum over the next 2-3 years.

What I find disturbing is that I do not think any of us really have rue expectations moving forward. Everything seems to be a joke. Am I the only one concerned on what a failure could create for the program?
